ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) A pregame meeting didn't help the struggling New York Yankees.

The team with baseball's largest payroll dropped its third straight to the low-budget Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-2 Thursday night, falling into a tie for last place in the AL East.

Mark Hendrickson pitched effectively into the eighth inning, and Alex Sanchez homered and scored four times for the Devil Rays, who won a series against the Yankees for the first time since September 2002 by taking three of four from the seven-time defending division champions.

Aubrey Huff and Josh Phelps drove in two runs apiece off Chien-Ming Wang (0-1).

New York (11-18) has lost seven of its last nine games and four consecutive series to plunge seven games under .500 for the first time since July 18, 1995, when it was 33-40. The Yankees share the AL East cellar with the Devil Rays, who have won four of six meetings between the teams after going 4-15 against New York last season

I think ole George will be CLEANING house soon! Unbelieveable how bad this team is but it proves once again that PITCHING is EVERYTHING in MLB and the Yanks have NONE! I love it,hopefully Tampa will finish ahead of these overpaid babies @ the end of year.

At this point in time, the YANKS are certainly no lock to make the playoffs.

They better thank their lucky stars that the Red Sox are a tad banged up currenlty......or they would be in worse shape.

Is anyone else ou there betting against the Yankees without even thinking? I started with the Drays series and will continue to do so until yankees put together at least 2 in a row.

Talked to my buddy in Vegas yesterday. He is a clerk in a sb. 2 guys came in and were looking at the board then came up to him and said give them the Yankees for 1700 to win 1000. Then they laughed and said they needed extra money for going out tonight and that they would be back in a few hours to cash out. LOL!

Have witnessed this many times working n Vegas myself. Square city people always think they could make a "quick score" betting a heavy fav be it horses or sports. And many times you know what happens.

Nicky, I worked on a place in Vegas (over 6 years ago, will not be named) and when i started there they showed me a list of guys they didnt take bets from. There was a Chinese guy on the list and I asked "Why did you kick this guy out? All he does is bet Yankees RL, Braves RL every day and parlay em!" I was told he won everyday for 3 days. Thats when I knew it was time to get out of town.
