Devil Rays release Tatis......wtf?

Just saw today where the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have released (not traded) Fernando Tatis....

Wasnt it just about 3-4 years ago that Tatis was the bright new star in the Cardinals organization?

What happened to him?

I know he was traded to Montreal a couple years back, but what has happened that he has slipped so far that he would be released by the Devil Rays....Its not like they have an abundance of talent, how could he not make their team....

Anyone have any insight....this just really caught me by surprise when i saw this...

(i still posted this, even though i have the fear that it wont be "useful" enough of a thread)...

Tatis was a long shot to make the squad, he was a non-roster tryout. After hitting just .194 with 2 HRs in 54 games with Montreal last year, it looks like Tatis is either finished or headed for the minors.

What makes a guy fall so bad? he hit real well with the Cardinals, alot of power, and steady at third.......amazing how it can change...

Not really sure unless the pitchers got a "book" on him . He had one big year (99) when he hit .298 with 34 homers with 107 rbi. Since then he has only played in 304 games in 4 seasons with only 37 homers and 125 rbi hitting below .250. Looks like he may have been injured also.

A poster child for advance scouting reports. The guy burst on the scene with those two grand slams in an inning. The Cards realized it quickly and cut their losses. The guy they inserted in for him, Pujols, hasn't done too badly

1997: 8 HR

1998: Hits 3 HR in 330 AB's in a hitter's park in Texas. Then traded to St. Louis where he goes on to hit 8 HR in 202 AB's.

1999: 34 HR

2000: 18 HR in limited action with St. Louis.

2001 in Montreal: 2 HR
2002 in Montreal: 15 HR
2003 in Montreal: 2 HR

Look at how his figure has shaped over this time.

This guy is a poster boy for 'roids.
