Devil Rays Off the Snide - Win Consecutive Games for First Time.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Jose Cruz Jr. went 4-for-4 with a home run and three doubles, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays won consecutive games for the first time this season with a 5-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Friday night.

Relievers Trever Miller, Lance Carter and Danys Baez combined for six scoreless innings for the Devil Rays, who needed 40 games to record back-to-back victories. They're the 11th team to go this deep into the season without two straight wins.

They've been hitting for past ten games now...solid. The pitching has had some struggles in May following a decent April...much of that likely exxagerated during the 20 games where they averaged like 3.0 per on offense. That kind of scoring can make a pitcher try and be too fine and he then gets whaled.

At the beginning of this 12 game homestand, we predicted (well, we told the SheBar) that they would win at least six. They're 2-2 and looking good. Given that next 7 after today are versus Tribe, Minn 3, and NYY 3 they will likely be decent plus money in every game

BREAK UP THE DEVIL RAYS!!!

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Jose Cruz Jr. homered and drove in four runs, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to their first three-game winning streak of the season with a 6-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night.

Cruz is 7-for-11 with two homers and eight RBIs in the past three games. He hit a three-run shot in the first and made it 4-3 with an RBI grounder in the sixth.

Tino Martinez hit a two-run double in the eighth to put Tampa Bay up 6-3, sending the Indians to their fourth loss in a row.

Doug Waechter (2-4) snapped a personal four-game losing streak, allowing three runs and four hits in 6 1-3 innings. Jorge Sosa went the final 2 2-3 innings for his first career save.

Victor Martinez hit one of Cleveland's three solo homers. Since moving into the cleanup spot May 3, Martinez has four homers and 24 RBIs in 17 starts.

Jake Westbrook (3-2) gave up five runs and five hits in 7 2-3 innings.

Cruz put the Devil Rays up 3-0 with his three-run shot in the first. He went 4-for-4 with three doubles and a solo homer in Friday's 5-3 win.

The Indians tied it at 3 on homers by Travis Hafner in the second inning, Matt Lawton in the third and Martinez in the fourth off Waechter, who has allowed 11 homers in 36 2-3 innings.

Waechter got 13 flyouts, including several that reached the warning track.

It took the Devil Rays 40 games to win two straight this year. They were the 11th team to go that deep into a season without consecutive victories. Notes: Cruz has two homers in seven at-bats against Westbrook. ... Hafner has seven RBIs in his past five games. ... Devil Rays DH Robert Fick went 0-for-3 and has one hit in his last 37 at-bats. ... The Indians have outscored their opponents 34-7 in the second inning.

Baldelli hit a go-ahead, three-run homer, and reliever John Halama threw 3 1-3 scoreless innings to lead the Devil Rays over the Minnesota Twins 5-4 Thursday.
Baldelli's first homer since May 2 overcame a 4-2 deficit in the fourth, and Tampa Bay went on to win for the sixth time in seven games. . His drive hit a catwalk support pole approximately 125 feet above the field. Baldelli has hits in eight straight games and 13 of his last 14.
''Winning is more fun,'' Baldelli said. ''We're beating good teams now. To come and win a series against a team like this is huge.''
Baldelli is hitting .296, up from .195 on April 18.
''He's been swinging the bat very well,'' Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella said. ''I think he tried to put on some muscle over the winter, get a little bigger. Now he's taken 12 pounds or so off, and he's hitting. He's started to drive it.''
Halama (1-1) entered in the fourth and gave up two hits. Jorge Sosa didn't allow a run over 1 2-3 innings, and Danys Baez pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save in seven chances.
Tampa Bay's bullpen has allowed one run over its past 35 2-3 innings.
''You start winning these close ballgames, these are the bigger confidence builders,'' Piniella said.
