Rays call up top prospect Jennings
The Sports Xchange
The Tampa Bay Rays recalled outfielder Desmond Jennings(notes) from Triple-A Durham after Friday night's loss to the Royals. Shortstop Reid Brignac(notes) was optioned to Durham.
Jennings is the Rays' top prospect and widely regarded as one of the top prospects in all of baseball. The 24-year old was batting .275 with 12 homers, 39 RBI and 17 stolen bases over 397 plate appearances at Durham this season.
"We wanted to get Desmond up here and we wanted to get Brignac better offensively," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "There's no question Reid is a Major League caliber shortstop without question. And I don't like the idea of him not playing defense for us. But moving down the road we have to get better on the offensive side of the ball."
Brignac began the season as Tampa Bay's starting shortstop but has struggled offensively all season, hitting .193 with one home run and 10 RBI. He'll take over as the starting shortstop in Durham to try to right himself at the plate.
Meanwhile, Sean Rodriguez and Elliot Johnson(notes) are expected to share playing time at shortstop for the Rays.
Off to a good start!!!
- D. Jennings tripled to deep left center
- J. Damon struck out swinging
- B. Zobrist singled to center, D. Jennings scored
