Van Halen I is one of the best rock albums ever, put into context. What Eddie did to a guitar had never been released to the masses....he single-handedly created a new era of guitar gods. Not that their weren't other great guitar players at the time, but they would have continued on in oblivion had Eddie not kicked down the door.
Van Halen in the 80's became a joke...it was really sad to see. I remember seeing them on the 1984 tour and DLR was actually given a "solo" where he jumped around with a sword and a silk flag and danced and pranced around the stage....If I hadn't lost all respect for the band after Diver Down, I did after seeing that show.
At that time I was a huge fan of Hagar solo (actually dating back to Montrose Rock Candy days). When I heard the two camps were going to come together, I was apprehensive. However, 5150 was a phenomenal album, as was OU812 (Used to love driving to mexico cranking Cabo Wabo) I remember Hagar wouldn't even sing Jump because it was such a total ***** song.
They are two separate entities really, two bands with the same name. Both great (excluding Diver Down, which may be the worst Rock Album ever made if not for little guitars)
