Van Halen I is one of the best rock albums ever, put into context. What Eddie did to a guitar had never been released to the masses....he single-handedly created a new era of guitar gods. Not that their weren't other great guitar players at the time, but they would have continued on in oblivion had Eddie not kicked down the door.

Van Halen in the 80's became a joke...it was really sad to see. I remember seeing them on the 1984 tour and DLR was actually given a "solo" where he jumped around with a sword and a silk flag and danced and pranced around the stage....If I hadn't lost all respect for the band after Diver Down, I did after seeing that show.

At that time I was a huge fan of Hagar solo (actually dating back to Montrose Rock Candy days). When I heard the two camps were going to come together, I was apprehensive. However, 5150 was a phenomenal album, as was OU812 (Used to love driving to mexico cranking Cabo Wabo) I remember Hagar wouldn't even sing Jump because it was such a total ***** song.

They are two separate entities really, two bands with the same name. Both great (excluding Diver Down, which may be the worst Rock Album ever made if not for little guitars)

These rumors come up all the time. I doubt DLR and Van Halen will ever get back together.

Eddie said on Stern that he was open to it...but that doesn't mean it will happen.

I'm curious why you say that, is it the voice, the musicians are the same, just curious?

The music was really starting to change after Fair Warning. Eddie was starting to use more keyboards. When Sammy joined, they were going for a broader appeal. Took out cover songs and replaced them with slower songs. In the DLR-era, they would never have done a song like When Its Love.

That was brutal. Rarely listened to 1984 and that was a big reason, along with Jump.

all in good fun.i embrace both versions of the mighty halen, but as i said earlier live there is no comparison! sammy hands down.i have seen roth with halen and on his own about 15 times and sammy with the brothers 10 times.including 2 shows when hagar and roth toured together.make sure you check out the concert i posted.great show.

i wish they would just put issues aside and do one last tour with both singers.other acts go out and play 3 hours each night, why not them.if you want check out some of these videos and notice how happy and "brotherly" everyone acts on these videos.really sad that it has came to what it is.

Why are you guys dissing one of my all-time favorite songs "JUMP". I believe that song was voted the #1 song of all 1984.

But the Sammy Hagger era was awesome. Give slight lean to sammy

Ya know chop...you are right. I think the Jump Bashing has gone on long enough. Look at the lyrical genious of the song....tool and coldplay need to sharpen their pens

Owwww!
I get up, and nothin' gets me down
You got it tough, I've seen the toughest around
And I know, baby, just how you feel
You got to roll with the punches and get to what's real

Ah, can't ya see me standin' here
I got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen
Ah, can't ya see what I mean?

Ah, might as well jump. Jump!
Might as well jump
Go ahead an' jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump

Ow-oh! Hey, you! Who said that? Baby, how you been?
You say you don't know, you won't know until you begin

So can't ya see me standing here
I got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen
Ah, can't ya see what I mean?

Ah, might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump
Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump
Jump!

WC, there are a million great songs out there that make absolutly no sense at all. You either enjoy the song or you dont.

About every Stelly Dan song ever written made no sense whatsoever even if you read the words to some of there songs 1,000,000 times you are still left clueless on the meaning of there songs but yet they are still one of the greatest bands ever.

I'm not particularly fond of STELLY DAMNED, but I'm pretty sure the songs Becker and Fagen were writing when they were six years old had more lyrical content than Jump. A little snippit from Deacon Blues...

I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I'll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I'll make it my home sweet home

Great thread, without a doubt DLR was part of the bands best stuff and was one of the best front men of all time. At some point however this cat swallowed some stupid pills lost his hair and became one of the biggest has beens ever. Sammy althought a couple notches behind still seems to have a clue and still is pretty entertaining to listen too in interviews

Two things I always think of when this debate comes up:
1) Nerf Herder - Van Halen
"Is this what you wanted?
Sammy Hagar, Sammy Hagar.
Is this what you wanted, man?
Dave lost his hair-line, but you lost your cool, buddy.
Can't drive fifty-five,
I'll never buy your lousy records again."

2) Bit from a Chuck Klosterman article comparing Celts fans & Lakers fans (of the 80s):
"(...) Dave was the ultimate California boy and Sammy's heaviest solo record is titled "Standing Hampton", which I think is in New Hampshire (the Red Rocker also looks a bit like Bill Walton, sans headband). Yet upon further review, it's all too obvious: Celtic people are Roth people, because that's the original, definitive incarnation of a classic archetype. Laker people are Hagar people, because Sammy was in the band longer and ultimately sold more albums (just as L.A. ultimately won five titles to Boston's three, while Magic won twenty-two of his thirty-seven head-to-head meetings with Bird). Hell, the Lakers weren't as cool, but they were better, you know?"

Speaking of losing your cool. It is sad to see the latest reincarnation of DLR. He is doing cheesy country versions of VH classics. Its sacrilige. :WTF:
