With Sami Salo’s return to the Vancouver Canucks lineup, the Canucks are getting back one blue-liner just as they’re losing another.
Canucks coach Alain Vigneault confirmed Friday that defenceman Dan Hamhuis will be out indefinitely after suffering a concussion on a blindside hit by Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks.
Hamhuis is the third Canucks defenceman to go down with an injury recently. Keith Ballard suffered a strained knee Monday against Ottawa and he’ll miss about four weeks. Alex Edler, the team’s top defenceman, is sidelined until the playoffs after undergoing back surgery.
At this rate the Canucks can almost forget about winning a stanley cup this season. With out defence, there is no championship in the NHL. The Canucks are going to rely on Roberto Luongo until these top defencemen get back into action.
This season Luongo is 26-8 with a save percentage of .926 and 2.23 goals against average. But last years 2011 stanley cup playoffs, Luongo was 6-6 with a save percentage of .895 and 3.22 goals against average. The Canucks are going to need a strong effort from Luongo if they want to go deep into the playoffs this year with top defencemen like Hamhuis, Ballard and Edler sidelined.
