56 complete games from these 4 guys, wow who managed this team? a few of these were even 10 inn. performances. One way or another the guy knows what he is doing. I know this is ancient history, but to ever get on him for pulling his pitchers is a kroc, thats not what he is all about.

when your only closer is on the DL, you may want to stick with a guy who hadn't had a ball hit hard against him all night. The Cards were very fortunate to hang on to that one

With marquis battiin in the 9th LaRussa did more than mosts managers do and said it's your game until someone gets on. Then someone got on right off the bat, and the matchup was unfavorable.

Sanders and Nunez helped make a winner of Jason Marquis (4-1), who pitched shutout ball into the ninth before the Reds made a game of it. Marquis was allowed to bat in the top of the ninth, but faced only one batter in the bottom half of the inning. Marquis had settled in during the middle innings, but he entered the ninth with 111 pitches already. With the heavily left-handed heart of the Reds order coming up after Ryan Freel's single, it wasn't a hard call to go to Ray King. "I would have liked to finish the game, obviously, but it's a long season," Marquis said. "I'd like to throw a complete game in September. The bullpen did the job tonight."

That '81 team was managed by Billy Martin. LaRussa didn't arrive in Oakland until '86. The stupidest thing LaRussa ever did was during '94 (I think). The A's had crumbled and LaRussa, not used to a team that had no talent and still riding the "genius" label put on him by idiots like George Will, got a hare-brained idea that instead of pitching one guy nine innings it would be better to pitch three different guys three innings each. He wanted to do this every game. It lasted less than a week before he figured out that no talent means no wins regardless of how you manage or how many computers you use. I think he's a mediocre manager. He should stay in St. Louis because it's almost automatic that they're in the playoffs every year given that they're in the "small-market" division.

Batting a pitcher 8th may not be a bad idea if he can swing the bat like a Mike Hampton. Hell, i'd start him ahead of Raul Mondesi and Brian Jordan at this point. Anyway, I personally think LaRussa is overrated but not as awful as a few think. He certainly isn't in the Whitey Herzog class. He WAS a great manager.

You guys have no clue what baseball is about. This guy is one of the best managers you'll ever see all the way until he walks into the doors of the Hall of Fame. Many people in St Louis should even be ashamed of how they have treated him. This guy is a mastermind of the game and people should be glad they get to see him. There are only a few good ones left and they'll be gone before long. Enjoy the last of one of the game's great managers of modern era!
One of LaRussa's finest seasons this year. Major injuries to key players and yet back to a WS. He utilized his bullpen brilliantly this series - had no starter go 5 innings in 6 games. Let's hear the haters?
PS-he also won another world series after this thread was started.
