SONOMA, Calif. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. was treated for minor burns on his face and legs and hospitalized after an accident Sunday during practice for the American Le Mans Series Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Medical officials at Infineon Raceway described the injuries as "moderate-sized burns of moderate intensity."

Earnhardt was flown to the University of California-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for precautionary reasons.

During a 30-minute practice, Earnhardt's Chevrolet Corvette C5-R spun and hit a barrier in turn eight of the road racing track, catching fire. Earnhardt quickly got out of the car on his own before being assisted by safety crews.

Earnhardt, who regularly competes in the Nextel Cup Series, was to have driven in Sunday's ALMS race with veteran road racing driver Boris Said. The team has withdrawn the car from the race.

Yeah, but as you said it's just moderate. It's not like he went to that pond behind Publix, and got eaten by some alligators. Everyone in the media knows how hardcore Tampa is. Just becuase Jr. gets his leg cut off or whatever, that's nothing compared to what happens in everyday life in Hillsborough county.

Good thing it's only minor burns this time...next time could be fatal. Good luck Junior!

Dale will be ok this time, but who knows next time. Racing is dangerous and a driver can be killed at any minute of any race.

These guys are all nuts but you have to admire the courage...you think it doesn't look all that just go to a live race, you will come away in awe....

I saw the footage, it looked terrible, fire all around him while he sat in the car...
