yeah at those odds...no value in Cal State Fullerton, except without knowing too much and just reading about them, I'm guessing they're the only team with enough pitching depth to get in the lose an early game and come out.

RICE has certainly built a very nice baseball program.

Three Owls Earn First Team All-America Honors From Baseball America

June 13, 2006
HOUSTON -- Rice senior Eddie Degerman and sophomores Brian Friday and Cole St.Clair were all named by Baseball America magazine as 2006 first team all-America selections the publication announced on June 13, the day before the Owls pack up and head to the College World Series in Omaha.
Degerman backed up his preseason all-America honors with one of the best collegiate seasons in the country. The senior is 13-1 with a 1.81 and new C-USA record 158 strikeouts in 119.2 innings. The standout from Granada Hills, Calif., ranks among the NCAA leaders in ERA, wins and strikeouts per nine innings (11.7 per game). When facing nationally-ranked teams Degerman maintained a 2.11 ERA and held those elite opponents to a composite .178 batting average. He was a first team all-Conference USA selection and earlier this week he was tabbed as a 2006 all-America by the College Baseball Foundation, Collegiate Baseball magazine and a first team Academic all-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Friday's outstanding season as the starting shortstop is a reason the Owls (55-11) are the number one team in the country. The sophomore from Houston led the team and ranks among the C-USA's best in batting average (.365), hits (93), doubles (21), runs scored (65), total bases (147), on-base percentage (.449) and stolen bases (17). He is one of three Owls to start all 66 games and he had two or more hits in a game 24 times. Friday had a 20-game hitting streak during the year but his defense was just as steady up the middle. He registered a .955 fielding percentage and turned or started 38 of the Owls' 58 double plays. St. Clair followed up freshman all-America accolades a year ago with first team honors in his sophomore campaign. The left-handed pitcher emerged as the team's closer where he has saved 11 of the Owls' games. St.Clair is 6-2 with a 1.82 ERA in 69.1 innings. The Santa Ana, Calif., native is second among the NCAA leaders in strikeouts per nine innings (12.2 pg) and among the best in ERA. He leads C-USA in appearances (34), and opponents' batting average (.144). Earlier in the year he was on the watch list of the Clemens Award and was a finalist for the Stopper of the Year Award. Rice baseball has had at least one all-America selection in each of the last 13 years. The Owls meet SEC power Georgia in its opening game of the College World Series this weekend at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha. Game time with the Bulldogs, which will be televised live by ESPN2 is set for 1 pm.

The Field has ZERO chance outside of Oregon State and Clemson. And they dont match up well vs. Fullerton and Rice. It would really shock me if neither Fullerton, nor Rice made it to the finals. So one of them, if not both of them are going to make it to the Finals. Then a team needs to beat them in a 2 of 3 series. Yikes. Not the way those teams pitch.

Its the same stuff every year. Teams with glaring weaknesses dont make it through, just like any major sports playoffs.

Georgia Tech can't pitch (team ERA over 4), Miami cant pitch (team ERA over 4), North Carolina cant pitch outside of Andrew Miller, Georgia cant pitch besides their bullpen.

That leaves 4 teams that can pitch:

1. Rice....deeeeeeeeeeeeeep pitching staff....dallas mavs deep...they can HIT HIT HIT too.
2. Fullerton.....dominant starting rotation...this is one of the only teams in the tourney that can win a 2-1 game.

Outside Chance
3. Oregon State (cant hit).......good starting rotation and ace in the bullpen
4. Clemson - solid, nothing special, but solid starters...they can hit

The Canes have a nice baseball program and have been to the WS before. Do they have a shot?

One possible starter that may be getting overlooked for Clemson is Sean Clark. Came up huge in the ACC tournament (8 ip, 4h, 1 er, 1 bb, 5k) after rehabbing his injured shoulder for most of the season. Came into pitch in a relief roll in the regionals (8 ip, 0 r, 3 h, 2 bb, 6k) and the super-regionals (3.2 ip, 3h, 1 er, 3 bb, 3k).

Aside from Clark (if he in fact starts a game), they can still turn to Farris (2.37), Berken (2.90) or Cribb (3.09). Berken is the weakest of the three as he tends to walk a lot of batters. Hitters only hitting a shade over .200 against Farris and about .230 against Cribb. If they can get 6 from their starters, Zocchi, Kopp and Moskos are capable. The problem as of late has been the starters getting knocked out early and having to rely on too many arms from the pen. The off days and early start of the super-regional in Clemson should help with extra rest.

Good hitting club, but they are BRUTAL on the basepaths. In the super-regional they made no less than 5 baserunning errors in 2 games. Leggett will say it's due to aggressiveness, but most of the plays were just flat sloppy.

7of the 8 teams have not played a game west of Omaha, where the real baseball is played. Clemson had a dream draw playing home games vs Elon and Oral Roberts who the ystruggled with,

A down year for NCAA baseball, made it out to Goodwin for 2 of the Missouri games, Titans not as good as the 04 team that beat Texas but still good enough to win it, only competion being Rice, they did outscore Rice in the 3 game series played in Texas back 2 months ago. Fullerton been on fire since then.

Fullerton talks 10 th round high school kids out of signing, they send them to Cypress JC so they can drafted as Frosh, if not high enough then on to CSF. Horton came from Cypress, just talked to ex mlb guy Tim Wallach, his kid Matt going to play CSF next year via Cypress.

Quick Geography Lesson Rail....Both Oregon and California are west of Omaha. But most people don't know Corvallis is in Oregon, or even that Oregon State University is in Oregon...

so no worries
