With all the handicapping going on in this forum - I was just wondering if anyone has paid attention to the "Curse of the SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Cover ?" - That is , YOU Bet against the team that is on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Last week they had San Diego on its cover - and the Chargers lost to Pittsburgh. THIS Week - they got PITTSBURGH on the cover. Does that mean you place yer bets on the BALTIMORE RAVENS ? - surely I do love the Steelers, BUT perhaps the Steelers will win the game -and go the the BIG DANCE - BUT Not cover the spread ? Pittsburgh 17 BALITMORE 13. What d'y'all think ? :think2:

Like MOST magazines, Sports Illustrated puts out different covers on a region by region basis...

...meaning that the newstands in Arizona will have the Cardinals on the cover while the newstands in Philadelphia will have the Eagles on the cover, same same with the mags sold in the Pittsburgh area versus the Baltimore area.

Take care and be well my friend

Here's an article on the subject that I found rather easily on the net, it doesn't deal with this years upcoming AFC-NFC Championship games, however, it does convey the point I was making with regard to the cover of SI now being regionalized...

Having Regional Covers Cheapens Sports Illustrated -- and Who Gets Jinxed?

Georgetown's DaJuan Summers, Connecticut's Jeff Adrien, Xavier's Drew Lavender, Tennessee's Chris Lofton, Kansas's Brandon Rush and UCLA's Kevin Love are all on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week, with subscribers and newsstands in each region of the country getting the cover that will generate the most local interest.

For local fans, it's cool to see your own favorite player on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and for the players themselves, it has to be an incredibly thrilling experience to see themselves there. But something about this practice -- which Sports Illustrated has done before -- rubs me the wrong way.

In the old days of the magazine, there was always something special about the Sports Illustrated cover: It signified that this person was the athlete that we should care about.

It was like all American sports fans could share in a national conversation about this one particular person. When we learn that Michael Jordan has been on the most covers, followed by Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Jack Nicklaus, we feel like we know how often those athletes have been at the center of the national sports conversation. When the covers are split up and regionalized, they feel cheapened.

And, of course, there's also the issue of the cover jinx. With six different teams getting the cover treatment, how do we know which one not to put in the Final Four in our office pools?

Thanks for this information - Thus, it would be very DIFFICULT to bet against the cover - especially IF SPORTS ILLUSTRATED now produces covers on a REGIONAL BASIS - but PERHAPS - the ONE to get is - the Sports Illustrated Cover that is outside of the CONTINENTAL USA ... like the one that is sent to PUERTO RICO or WAKE ISLAND or ??? me ? - I live out in the Sunny State in the middle of the Pacific - and you guys all know where that is - sooooo, why didn't they have the AZ Cardinals on our issue (Since AZ is the closest to us ? - Just as Last week they had SAN DIEGO ) , ... Soooo , ... just perhaps the CURSE OF THE COVER can be determined by looking at the cover that SPORTS ILLUSTRATED posts on their internet site, ... which has PITTSBURGH on that cover .... :think2:
