Carlos Zambrano's shoulder strain has landed him on the 15-day disabled list. The Cubs announced that move Saturday, retroactive to June 19.

Zambrano is 8-3 with a 3.13 ERA in 16 starts this season. The right-hander left Wednesday's start in Tampa Bay after allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks, striking out two. Tests show he has a minor strain in his right shoulder.

The Cubs also recalled infielder Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa. He'll be available for Game 2 of the Cubs' series against the White Sox at Wrigley Field.

It is a minor strain of his shoulder. He will miss 2-3 starts and come back after the AS break. Could have been much worse.

putting him on the DL keeps him on a leash and there won't be any drama of him over doing for quick rehab or "are you ok to make this start"

he knows he won't be pitching

why is Zambrano going on the DL newsworthy?
Because he's an ace of a first place club, that is 8-3, with a solid 3.13 ERA.
Just as important, he's an innings eater, that goes 7 innings on the average, which means extra work for the bullpen without him.
