The JINX is for real fellas. Remember the Cubs ‘84’ MELTDOWN? They won their first two and only needed to win one more in San Diego. They blew all three games. But in game 5 they had the lead till the 7th when a error lead to 2 runs. Then there was the ‘69’ MELTDOWN. I don’t know the details of this one. But I believe it had something to do with the Cubbies needing to win only 1 of 5, or, 1 of 10 in their final 5 or 10 games of the season…and lost them all... opening up the door to the Mets to win the division.

How can a team go 95 years and NEVER win a championship???? The only thing that explains this …IS A JINX. Believe it fellas. Same thing with BoSOX. This team had the best slugging percentage in the history of baseball. I think 7 of the nine hitters finished the season above .300. In the 8 gms they’ve played, only once have they scored 5 runs. BOTTOM LINE, BELIEVE IN THESE JINXS BOYS. Don’t bet the Cubbies tonight!.

Some how, some way, them cursed Cubbies will find a way to LOSE tonight.

Look for Yankee/Marlins series

Anyone have the details on the ‘69’ Cub MELTDOWN? I’d love to hear it…

suetoneous,

As you wish. Here's some info about '69.

Let's start with the Cubs ahead of the Mets by 10 or so games in mid-season. Something like that. A lock or so we think in Chicago. Managed by Leo Durocher with good if not great pitching, all they lacked was a centerfielder.

Hell sue, this is part of an epilogue to a baseball novel I wrote a few years back that intertwined the 69 season with that of a down and out low level minor leaguer that same year. I did not make much of an effort to have it published.

I have to sort of do this from memory since I don't have the manuscript at hand. So there may be an inacuracy or two but bear with me.

Early in September of 1969 the Chicago Cubs journeyed to New York to play the now hard charging New York Mets in Shea Stadium. The Cubs had suddenly begun to play like they had in so many years past. A black cat ran in front of Cub catcher Randy Hundley across the Shea Stadium infield. A controversial call at the plate, one that a die hard Cub fan willnever forget in a lifetime, cost the Cubs one game.

The Cubs' weak hitting, rookie centerfielder Don Young dropped an easy flyball to cost them another. Team leader Ron Santo publicly criticized the kid. It wasn't the beginning of the end. It was the end.

Chicago knew, as only Chicago could know, that even though the two teams were separated only by a game or two in the standings, one was now a coyote descending face first down a steep cliff while the other would run the road to the pennant unimpeded. It was over before it was over. But, surely over it was.

The amazing "1969 Miracle Mets," as they were called, became the toast of the Big Apple. Their flakey left-handed reliever Tug McGraw not only coined the phrase "You Gotta Believe", but one might think had found some long lost heat, perhaps at one time strapped to the shoulder of Chcago's own Al Capone and somehow had infused it into his own shoulder.

Don Young never played another big league inning after that year, and years later was reportedly loading produce trucks in Lakeland. Florida.

Anyway sue,it went something like that. Also a song called "Hey, Hey, Holy Mackerel" which I posted in only somewhat bourbon eased misery last night, was recorded by, I seem to recall the players themselves, long before it should have been. They got so caught up in the hype they forgot only one thing--there were several months to go in the season.

Last night's collapse took minutes. In '69 it took months but it is all the same.

I will grant that baseball players and far too many people in general are superstitious.

But that changes nothing - 'jinxes' are not based in reality. 'Jinxes' are what superstitious people refer to when they are unable to accept rational explanations because then the truth might hurt. Blaming a damn billy goat curse for the long absence from the WS is downright ignorant, though it makes for a colorful story and funny headlines. Same for the BoSox and the Bambino curse.

What gets me is that GROWN people will believe just about anything, including this garbage. For example, if the Cubs lose tonight, then the jinx is still working, and if they lose, it's lifted. Right. If there was actually anything such as this jinx, why wasn't the originator of it unable to lift it back in 1984 for the Cubs? Answer - because it doesn't exist, because monsters don't lie under children's beds at night with claws and tentacles, because crossing your fingers when you've got 2 dimes on a 4th and goal at the one is useless, because the Loch Ness monster is a little children story that generates a lot of revenue for the shrewd local Scotsmen, etc, etc, etc.

Why no mention of a New Orleans Saints jinx? Is it still true they haven't even won a playoff series since their inception in the mid-60s? Surely someone can come up with something colorful!

Journey, if only I could not watch this game this is what I would do. I would make a dime bet, large for me but not unheard of, on the Marlins. I would then down a Xanax with a shot of bourbon and go quickly, blissfully to sleep. I would wake up in the morning HAPPY.

A dime lost would be nothing compared to a Cubs win. And if they lost, I would appreciate the nice addition to my bankroll and be done with this terrible distraction and happily go to work capping my college foots.

But alas, I will no doubt watch every dreadful pitch. Hopefully, I will be able to abstain from getting down on this one for to lay that much Wood on top of Wood knowing the outcome would simply be unacceptable.

Thanks Mr Jones. I was thinking the cubbies had to win only one game game in the five/ten. But we all now they blew it...

JAZZ, I'm not superstious at all. Okay, I do have a lucky shirt I MUST wear if I bet a c-note or more on a game. And the pen I write my bets down with is always the same one. When I wrote my bets down with a different pen, I went on a ten game losing streak. And if I'm checking a game on the internet [that I bet on], I always refresh the screen standing up. I discoved that if I'm sitting, well, bad things happen. And I also can't eat until the game I bet on is finished. If I do, well, you know. Finally, I always clean the house when I've got a game in progress. I've discoved the betting Gods DON'T like a dirty house - needless to say, my wife loves this. I can't tell you how many games I've lost due to an undiscovered sock on the floor, dust on the TV, a dirty shower door, a crumb on the kitchen table, etc.

Anyhow Jazz, didn't you see that EASY grounder that Gonzo missed? It was shoulder high, softly hit, a play he makes 999,999 out of 1,000,000. EXPLAIN THAT. Had he fielded that easy grounder, the gm would have wound up tied.

Swept again;

the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a seesaw 7-6 victory on Sunday.
