Cuba, well, if Cuba "opens up" and the embargo is lifted, I can say the rest of the Caribbean and some of Central America are in for a surprise in their net incomes for tourism and other wise.

For starters, Cuba already has seen a great increase in visitors since Raul took over, they have a very large amount of visitors from Canada, the UK, Asia etc, etc, which evidently will see an increase, the close proximity to miami and the US means less fare for travel, and the hotels are not that expensive.

The fact that the country was restricted for so long will definitely gain visitation interest to go there.

Canadian women are known to go there and "fall in love" with the salsa dancing men, and men from around the globe surely have fallen for the hot cuban ladies. Most cubans make an approximate US$25.00 per month, and to impress the average woman/man is peanuts compared to western men/women in dollar figure.

From the Architecture, the History, the culture, the Cigars, art, craft, beaches, music, and more, it sure will draw a crowd of visitors to its shores.

If Casino or Online Gambling is introduced then there are possibilities of WSOP Tournaments been held there.

How about all those baseball players that are there, it goes on and on, but one thing is for sure, when Cuba opens up and is off of being under an embargo from the US, the rest of the Caribbean and Central america will see a huge Dip in their revenue.

I liked the Cold War era better. Eastern Bloc being suppressed. Cuba not counting. Today, everyone screams about Human rights and equal opportunity. Sucks

Had friends go just a couple of weeks ago. Even though it hasn't been lifted 100% for Travel, somehow they got to go on a "religious" Trip of some kind...

They said it was sad... Very Poor Country... Hotels not anything close to even a 3 Star hotel....
Not what they expected , would take Years to fix up

The stories I have heard are crazy, things like toilet paper have a "season" meaning its only available for 3-4 months in the year, I asked my friend , so what happens when you are out, they laughed and said, There are cloths you can use, and wash. I threw up.

But after thinking about it, back in the day before "toilet paper" what were the cowboys/girls using.

When freedom and economy sprout, given the population it will convert into Detroit/Baltimore 2.0.

Then you're in for a shitload of trouble. It's been proven in the world over and over again.

Very poor, but Havana still has a vibe unlike any other.

It's not going to change "quickly". There are going to be a lot of restrictions/regulations, etc. Right now the infrastructure isn't there to handle a mass rush of tourism. It's going to take several years. It will definitely improve a few of the citizens quality of life. However, it will still be similar to places like Haiti or DR. If it can get like Panama or PR it would be great, but I imagine that will take 10+ years. They are so far behind the rest of the world it's not even funny.

I've been to GITMO, which is a pleasure cruise/vacation (for the military). But GITMO isn't the "real" Cuba.

I see you haven't changed at all.

I can't pay the dude a sincere compliment?
He insightfully pointed out that Guantanamo Bay isn't the same as the "rest of Cuba" and that visiting "Gitmo" is somewhat different than visiting Cuba.

This is the kind of insightful and razor sharp analysis this guy is known for.

That is all

Not much internally has changed since Raul took over. It is probably even more repressive than it was before and of course Obongo is making a terrible deal with them.

BAS, please don't quote that POS. I have him on my ignore list so quoting him allows me to see his useless comments. On that note, why is he still here? Brings zero value to this forum.

I know a lot of people who travel to Cuba. They use the same excuse about religion. I heard nothing but bad things about all the Cuban people down here in SFL about this embargo.

I asked one guy about Netflix going to Cuba and he told me there's no internet to begin with so how will they watch.

Scientists discover new strain of HIV in Cuba that develops into AIDS 3 times faster than more common strains:

Researchers at the University of Leuven in Belgium say the HIV strain CRF19 can progress to full blown AIDS within two to three years of exposure to virus. Typically, HIV takes approximately 10 years to develop into AIDS. Patients with CRF19 may start getting sick before they even know they've been infected, which ultimately means there's a significantly shorter time span to stop the disease's progression.
The scientists began studying the cases in Cuba when reports began coming in that a growing number of HIV-infected patients were developing AIDS just three years after diagnosis with the virus.
