So close to the magic 500 Hr mark, but it might not happen now, as Tampa Bay sends Fred McGriff down to the minors...

Not even good enough in his hometown...

Happy trails Crime Dog...

Too bad for one of the last class guys and steroid free power hitters of our time. He will always be a hero to be.!!!

As big a Freddy fan as I am, I would be suprised to see him get in at all. Although, if he does I hope to be in Cooperstown to see it. The reason he flew under the radar is because his game was no hype, all substance, and he never got into trouble and didn't say anything stupid. He's someone you would want your kids to emulate not a loudmouth braggart like Bonds or pretty boy like Jeter, to name a few.

I hope this is not the last we see of Fred, for the game will not be the same for me without him.

I went and read the article and it doesn't sound like it's a done deal yet. Sounds like they kept him from going to Japan and he may still stay on the roster somehow. I can't see him going down to the minors at this point. I hate to root for someone to get hurt, but I really would love for Freddy to get his 500.

I hope so...He always seemed to play and act like a class ballplayer....And for over a decade you could count on 30 and 100...

I think he gets in the Hall, its a shame those couple extra homeruns will change the perception of a fantastic career...

Look at his stats. Last year was the first really down year he had and that was mainly due to injury. Even then he was on a 25-30 homer pace. He hit .250 in spring training and he's a slow starter. I don't think it's over, unless he wants to be with his family, many teams would be a fool not to have him around as an extra bat and a positive influence on the kids.

Freddie will resurface somewhere and get his dingers. It would be stupid for some organization somewhere not to capitalize on the chase to 500.

And I say after he does he will be a first ballot lock maybe just because his records are NOT tainted.

Met him in a restaurant in San diego 10 years ago. One of the classiest, most down to earth, friendliest athletes i have ever met. Anyone know exactly how far he has to go for 500? If they keep giving Ricky Henderson chances to come back to the bigs, then the Crime Dog should easily find a spot somewhere.

Green Doberman/Mr. Jones:
With all due respect, how do you know that FM is a steroid free power hitter and/or that his records are not tainted?

This is exactly the problem with the lack of any drug testing program in MLB...the innocent players are penalized along with the guilty players.

While I agree with you in that I don't "think" FM has used steroids, the fact is that we don't know and thus his records are as tainted as those posted by BB/SS/MM/et al.

Good point. The fact that so many players have exploited this loophole for so long is simply wrong. They need to get with intelligent people who can screen for ALL of the usual suspects and make the playing field fair for all players involved. If I was playing against players, working my ass off, not using steroids, and the other guy is cheating, it is wrong, wrong, wrong. If MLB would get off its ass and address this now, then perhaps our children will have an opportunity to play in a sport that is not marred by cheats and slime.

You are right stew. Goes under the category "I just don't think."

But you are so right. And to think there was so much concern about 61....the 162 games and the asterisk. The hallowed record books...one thing that to some degree could be held constant are pretty much wasted now.

Well we can still bet the games.

Id love to see him go back to the Braves in his quest for 500...lots of new kids who will need a leader to follow on that team...Somehow I just dont see "Chipper" filling that role...

Big Freddie fan. Loved him in Toronto and was sad to see him go. Toronto seems to have a knack for bringing back old talent and it wouldn't surprise me to see them grab him somehow...some way....even to DH and give Delgado a break. Not sure ofthe logistics...call it a hunch.
Go Freddie!!!

I do not know for a fact, but can tell you for a fact that Fred did not even lift weights early in his career. This tells you the kind of NATURAL power he had.
