so any way, i fucked up my credit when i was young. i've been trying to rebuild it the past couple years, and one of the approacehes i took was to eliminate debt. the only bill that i have that reports to the beureaus is my vehicle. any ways, my score crept up a little bit for about a year or so, but for the past several months it has remained stagnant. one of the things i noticed when i check my report is it stated i don't have a credit card or what not. so okay, i decide to apply for one, thinking i'll get it, use it to pay my utilities, and then pay it off every month. maybe that way my score will climb a little faster.
so i applied and was approved for a 1st Premeire card (from a bank in SD). 1st of all, the limit is $250, which was low, but i don't intend to use it that much anyway. then i look at my first statement -- $179 in total charges and bullshit. so i think okay, i don't even have to buy anything, i'll just pay 60 bucks a month to establish a good history with them. so i go on their website earlier today to make my first payment.
they charged me 4 bucks to set up an account online -- what the hell you know, but it's a one time fee, so whatever. and then when i go to make a payment using my checking account, they charge me another 8 bucks. seems the only free way to make a payment is to send a check through the mail. to add insult to injury, my credit score has dropped back to where it was a year ago. i guess getting a credit card that was close to being maxed out before i ever used it was worse than not having one period.
moral of the story: read the damn fine print and be careful of easy credit card approvals.
