Couple withdraws money, flees after bank error

New Zealand institution mistakenly deposited $6.1 million into account

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Police are looking for a New Zealand couple who disappeared after a bank mistakenly put 10 million New Zealand dollars ($6.1 million) into their account.
The couple, who ran a gas station in the northern city of Rotorua, applied to Westpac Bank for a NZ$10,000 ($6,000) overdraft and had 1000 times that amount paid into their account. The two then withdrew some of the money and disappeared, Detective Senior Sgt. David Harvey said.
Harvey said Interpol has been contacted for help, suggesting authorities believe they may have fled abroad with the cash.

"We are currently conducting an investigation into the individuals that may have been involved in the withdrawal of that money," Harvey said.

‘Vigorous’ legal action pursued
Westpac Bank said in a statement it was "pursing vigorous criminal and civil action to recover the sum of money stolen," but declined further comment.
Massey University banking lecturer Claire Matthews said the "lucky" recipients likely would not get away with the cash.

Nothing better than the ol' "What Would You Do...if this thing that would NEVER happen to you happened?"

Answer of course depends on how much they were able to successfully withdraw prior to their departure.

In this day and age......I have the feeling I would have a hard time forgiving a mistake from a bank (you know, those entities that always screw you with fees, never ending contracts and terms and conditions, more fees, 'oops we screwed up we need more money', 'oops we really think we need to increase that loan sharking interest rate we charge you on the credit card' )

I wish a couple of books that I hate would do that...I would run, but it would be easy to find me...

Banks deserve to get fucked...but in the end, I would return the money, too much hassle not to...minus money for a nice vacation which should be a reward....

I actually had a book do this not too long ago. They sent me the wrong amount in a check (too much). Talk about your hard decisions.

As for the bank in question, of course you report it. Unless you're a scumbag or something.

I had this happen to me about a year ago...although on a much smaller scale. It was during last summer right before the bash.

I went to an ATM to withdraw some money, and they always print your balance on your receipt. My balance was way higher than I expected it to be...by something like 15k. So I went inside and asked them to look up all recent deposits on the account. There was a huge cash deposit a day or two earlier, and I told them it wasn't mine. They looked into it, and it turned out the teller messed up one of the acct numbers when she entered it in. Jeez...you'd think for a deposit of that size, you'd triple check the entry if you're the clerk...

It's just not worth the hassle to try to keep the extra money. You'll get caught eventually.

My wife read about this story and told me that the couple was Chinese and they withdrew a little more than half of the money then disappeared.

In all probability they already somewhere in China, and no one is going to get to them from New Zealand.

You wouldn't necessarily get caught if u flew under the radar and weren't being an arrogant/dumb asshole about it. Hell I'll let them chill at my place if they can get here and i'll take like $600 a month or something.

My sentiments exactly.

Banks punish the poor with their 35 dollar OD fees, reward the rich with their nice interest rates.
