If the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin could write an article speculating that the Chicago Bears may trade for the New England Patriots’ Jimmy Garoppolo, then I could throw some spaghetti against the wall (to see if it sticks) too.
Volin is predicting that since the Bears and Pats have a recent trading history, and since the Bears want to get rid of Jay Cutler after this year (huh?), and since Bears’ general manager Ryan Pace and Garoppolo both played at Eastern Illinois, that this trade makes perfect sense.
What?
If Jimmy Garoppolo plays well in the four games that Tom Brady is suspended, there’s no way the Pats will move him. I don’t care if Brady jokes he may play 10 more years, at some point his 39 year old body will break down and New England will want a plan in place. The money could be problematic, with Jimmy G coming out of contract after the 2017 season, and Brady inked through 2019, but the Patriots usually find a way to make things work out financially.
Then again, if Garoppolo plays bad during the 4 game stretch, it’s doubtful the Bears, or any team for that matter, will try and trade for him.
Which leads me to the Bears and Jay Cutler.

Finding competent quarterback play in the NFL is hard. It’s really hard. Sure Cutler isn’t “elite,” but Cutler is a guy you can win with. His cap hit for the 2017 and 2018 season is only $16 and $17 million respectively. Those figures place him in 18th and 17th place among his peers for those two years.

OK, here’s my baseless speculation on the Bears trading for the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott. (Blame longtime WCG’er Doshi)
In case you haven’t been paying attention to the preseason games, or reading my weekly Ten Thoughts, Prescott has been tearing it up through Dallas’ first two practice games. All he’s done is go 22 of 27 (81.5%) for 338 yards and 4 TD passes, while rushing 5 times for 42 yards with 2 TDs. That is very Maddenesque...
If the Bears really want to move on from Cutler, it makes sense to do so after the 2018 season. His cap hit jumps to $20 million in 2019 and there would be absolutely zero guaranteed money left to pay a 36 year old Cutler.
Prescott will be entering the final year of his 4 year rookie deal in 2019 so the Cowboys, and the smartest owner in all of sports (Jerry Jones) may want to get something for him before he becomes a free agent. You see, Jones gave Tony Romo huge money that runs through 2019, so Jones may not be ready to pony up another giant contract for Prescott, especially since the odds are he’ll never see the field playing behind iron-man Romo.
With Prescott only dominating preseason play (because of Romo’s fantastic health), the Bears will have to have their scouts convinced that he’s the real deal.
But here’s the kicker, did you realize that Bears’ GM Ryan Pace worked in New Orleans, Louisiana from 2001 to 2014, while Prescott played his high school ball at Haughton High School in Haughton, Louisiana from to 2007 to 2010.

Maybe you guys don’t want the Bears to wait til 2019 to consummate the trade. Maybe you guys think the Bears should trade for the burgeoning superstar immediately. Maybe you think anyone is better than Jay Cutler...
