Cops: Woman taped boyfriend’s dog to fridge

20-year-old charged with felony cruelty after hanging canine upside down

BOULDER, Colo. - Police say a Colorado woman wrapped her boyfriend's dog in packing tape and stuck the animal upside down to a refrigerator because he wouldn't get rid of it.
Abby Toll was arrested Tuesday after police said she got into a fight with her boyfriend. She was charged with felony cruelty, drug possession and other counts and is free on $12,500 bond. She has declined to comment.
Toll's 21-year-old boyfriend, Bryan Beck, faces lesser charges including a misdemeanor cruelty count.

Police say Toll, 20, used packing tape to bind the legs, snout and tail of Beck's dog, Rex, a Japanese breed called a Shiba Inu. She told police she stuck the dog to the refrigerator because she was angry Beck wanted to keep it.
Rex was taken to a shelter and will be put up for adoption.

It's definitely messed up but a felony seems a little overboard here and this is coming from someone whose mom runs a non-profit animal rescue. I love animals but she didn't beat the thing to near death or anything. Poor dog and all but a misdemeanor seems more in order.

It doesn't sound like she was beating it or anything from what I gathered. Just taped it to the fridge until the boyfriend comes home. It's definitely messed up but is it really felony-type messed up? I'm all for treating animals well and she definitely crossed the line but I guess I just see a difference between taping the dog to the fridge (misdemeanor IMO) and beating the dog with a tire iron (felony IMO).

the dog could have a lot of brain damage because of the blood flow imbalance. a defenseless animal at that. give her the felony

Nice logic. Starve animals to death or burn 'em in a barn for insurance and its a parking ticket misdemeanor cause you didn't "beat the thing to near death or anything."

You really missed the point... Obviously if the animal is near death, I think it should be a felony... hence the example of the animal being near death and the associated felony. Putting it upside down for a few hours generally isn't putting it near death from anything I've ever heard or read. If the dog suffered any serious injuries then I'll take it back but I didn't get that impression from the article.
