The new lap top has hdmi port and, of course, usb. The TV is old with the old three prong RCA inputs (red, white, yellow). I have been enjoying icefilms.com laptop viewing and most recently, stream torrent for football. I'd like to run the signal from the laptop to our old TV. Google research confirms this type of connection is possible (gotta go buy the adapter first). I know that laptop display settings have to be tweaked as well once I make the connection. Anyone know if what I have described above is the optimal way to get my laptop signal to the tv? usb connections avail too, but I think hdmi is better. any pitfalls to beware of? I am going to go dig up that thread regarding torrent sites too... I think there might be relevant info in there.

I've never tried it but I read here that it uses processor utilization since the picture signal must be converted in order to go out the USB or HDMI port since neither outputs video natively.

I simply use the VGA port on my laptop and plug it into the VGA port on my HD TV. It works very well and no processor flips are used since the VGA port exports video straight.

interesting. based on that link, it appears hdmi is preferable to to usb. Any experience with hdmi to rca conversion?

Now that I read more at that link it refers to USB as needing processor utilization, not HDMI. The HDMI port should already have that taken care of. Sorry for the miscommunication.

arghh.. upon further research, it looks like hdmi to rca requires scaling the HDMI digital signal to analog level signal. i'd have to buy a "scaler" in addition to a simple cord adapter. better solution is to upgrade to flat screen with hdmi... but I don't want to do that. crud

now investigating laptop VGA output adaptor to either : rca / component / or s video : tv input. My laptop video card : Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, supports "tv out" processing... which I believe means that it does any conversions needed. (post # 888 for me! )

This outfit has every style of converter you might seek

http://sewelldirect.com/

I've purchased and occasionally use the "PC to Television" converter for $39.

Laptop video output goes into converter and there's a connecting cable that puts the display cleanly on my six year old 32" Sony

Uses either S-port or RCA jack

Thanks for the link barman. After researching this all afternoon via internet, I believe that a cheap little VGA to component adapter might actually work for me without a converter. The secret to this puzzle is the laptops internal video card. If it supports "tv out", then the existing internal card does the conversion for me. The specs on my video card seem a bit vauge, but I think tv out is part of it. will probably spend 20 bucks to see if the adapter works.

You might also want to keep an eye on a site called slickdeals.net. Very good LCD TV models from a year or two ago are dirt cheap now. Anything that is 720p insteaed of 1080p (which your eye probably can't tell the difference between anyhow) is at a big discount, and those TVs are extremely easy to hook up to a laptop. I've found some great deals through that site.

I connect an old computer to any tv that I want by using S video out to S video in (very common cord) (then u can buy 3$ each little adapters for each side of s video to goto the red/yellow/white rca male jacks. ( if u want sound as well u have to buy the specific cord that has svideo and a headset jack and it changes into 3 rca cables at other side. very easy to use) I have been able to connect my laptop to many tvs and broadcast video, etc by doing this.

here is something from ebay. obviously use this as a guide and then search from thre on length and other options... http://cgi.ebay.com/6Ft-4-PIN-S-VID...611?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a5e5fa4eb
if this auction has ended, he will prolly re-list or search for same stuff (also this is only 6ft. I personally bought 20ft so I never have a prob.)

here is 15ft http://cgi.ebay.com/15Ft-SVIDEO-S-V...643?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f02d18303 also less than $7

After connected right click ur desktop (select properties) and change to dual (2) monitors(its under settings and is a check box (i think)) and hit ok/apply. Then drag whatever window or video over to 2nd monitor (tv) u want to fullscreen.
enjoy
