Football: Costa Rica Beats Cuba to Advance to CONCACAF Quarterfinals
Costa Rica's football (soccer) team defeated Cuba 3-0 in Foxboro, Massachusetts Wednesday, to win Group-D and advance to the quarterfinals of the 16-nation CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.
Walter Centeno scored in first-half injury time, while Steven Bryce and Erick Scott added second half goals to complete the shutout.
Costa Rica's victory means it avoids playing the unbeaten defending champion, Team USA. Steve Sampson, the former U.S. coach who is now leading Costa Rica, says the U.S. squad is playing the best soccer right now.
Cuba, which won its first match Monday against Canada also advanced, and will face the United States in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Cuba clinched the second spot in Group-D, while Canada was eliminated.
Costa Rica will face El Salvador in the quarterfinals. Marvin Gonzalez scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute to give El Salvador a 1-0 win over Martinique and clinch the second spot in Group C.
