Does any company have a computer on the market with a firewall pre-installed?

software firewalls are pretty much the ones that you can buy or download. They have catchy titles like "Internet Security" when all it really does is destroy your your machines performance and ties up your system memory. A true waste of money...

A router is also a firewall, so if you have that, its good enough. A good firewall is an actual piece of hardware with a set of rules that actually determines what goes in and out of your network...whether its home or office

remember...your never totally protected unless you encrypt your folders...the C$ will get ya everytime ;)

Well--I'm not sure what it means (how to encrypt my folders), but guess it's a good idea to still have a firewall installed so sometime in 2006, I'm going to buy a compter with XP installed that has a firewall.

Let me explain my paranoia...several times lately while I'm on the internet simply looking at the news from the Daily racing Form or numerous other (what should be safe web-sites), the double little computer icons at the bottom of my screen stay lite up---like something is tracking what I'm doing on the internet or maybe looking into my computer for something. I know from past experience that icon does NOT light up unless I'm downloading something from the net, WHICH I"M NOT doing at the time. Gives me a scary feeling.

Thanks and any comment appreciated.

I think you're referring to your network card systray icons, and it's very normal for them to show activity even when you aren't necessarily doing anything.

I HIGHLY recommend a firewall of some sort....be is XP's, Norton, Zone Alarm or others.

Yep TT - I agree and I will buy something in 06. (I tried that security package with the Firewall..mentined by our fellow popster and I could not go to ANY websites! That was about a year ago and it was from McAfee, not known for their customer helpline....So If I've learned ANYthing...it's to buy this suff PRE-INSTALLED!)
Call me nuts---but HP (to me seems the most customer friendly--in 2000).

Many thanks--I really appreciate your input

The problem with preinstalled is that it pretty much leaves you with the Xp firewall as your only option. You shouldn't have any problem installing a 3rd party product after you get your machine.
