The first Coaches Poll of the year is out. There are no surprises in the Top 10. They are:

1. Florida
2. Texas
3. Oklahoma
4. USC
5. Alabama
6. Ohio State
7. Virginia Tech
8. Penn State
9. LSU
10. Mississippi

I guess if you had to fid a suprise, it would be the absense of Oklahoma State in the Top 10.

PSU could be some great fade material this year.

Anyone else feel #8 is a little inflated for them?

That is 4 SEC teams in the top 10. No Notre Dame, Georgia, Oklahoma State, California, or Boise St. Did you get 11 thru 20?

Now tell me which conference should get an automatic BCS game. The Big East, that has NO Top 25 team, or the Mountain West Conference that has 3 Top 25 teams.

It's a preseason poll, can we wait until we play the season before we shun any conferences.

2008 Coaches Preseason Poll

Here is a look at last years preseason poll and their final standings:

1. Georgia (#10)
2. USC (#2)
3. Ohio St (#11)
4. Oklahoma (#5)
5. Florida (#1)
6. LSU (DNP)
7. Missouri (#16)
8. West Virginia (DNP)
9. Clemson (DNP)
10. Texas (#3)
11. Auburn (DNP)
12. Wisconsin (DNP)
13. Kansas (DNP)
14. Texas Tech (#12)
15. Vir Tech (#14)
16. Arizona St (DNP)
17. BYU (#21)
18. Tenn (DNP)
19. Illinois (DNP)
20. Oregon (#9)
21. S. Florida (DNP)
22. Penn St (#8)
23. Wake Forest (DNP)
24. Michigan (DNP)
25. Fresno St (DNP)

So 13 out of 25 did not finish in the top 25 LY. 7 out of the top 10 did stick in the final standings, whereas 10 of the bottom 15 DNP (did not place)in the final 25 standings. Polls are based on perception for the most part, that is why we do our homework.

Intelligent thinking? Are you sure that has any place in here? Isn't it better that we just moan "Beeee-Seeeee-Esssss" and panic at all the hypotheticals?

At least two top ten teams have dropped out of the poll every season since the BCS started. It stands to reason that at least one of these SEC teams will drop out. Somebody has to lose since they all play each other. Penn State has only 9 starters back this season. I'll believe they are as good as last season when I see it. The good news for them is they play an easy schedule. But one loss will probably knock them out of the top 10. Either Va Tech or Bama will lose their top 10 status after the first game.

Penn State in the top 10 is laughable. LSU's rep has them in the top 10, they are not that good. Boise St should be in the top 10. They will show some stuff when they wax Oregon by 21+

Interesting Take...

From an SC site:

<table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td style="padding: 6px;" valign="top">PAC-10 gets disrespected again in the coaches poll</td><td style="padding: 6px;" class="" 1="" valign="bottom" align="right" nowrap="nowrap">javascript:window.location.href=('compose.asp?sid=995&fid=609&style=2&rid=130694034&tid=130694034');</td></tr></tbody></table><hr color="#cccccc" noshade="noshade"> Although it is a little simplistic to look at the polls this way, just take a simple look at the change between the final 2008 rank and the preseason 2009 rank by conference. *Note: there were 2 teams outside of the tope 25, that I could not easily find final 2008 coaches poll ranks for--ND and UNC, so I assumed a previous rank of 35 for the sake of the computations. Who won and lost?

#1 ACC. All 4 teams gained position.
VA Tech finished #14, ranked #7
GA Tech finished #22, ranked #15
FSU finished #23, ranked #19
UNC finished #35*, ranked #20
This is a net change of +33 ranking spots the best of all the conferences.

#2 SEC. 4 of its 5 teams all gained, but LSU +19 more than offsets Georgia -3
Florida finished #1, ranked #1
Alabama finished #6, ranked #5
LSU finished #28, ranked #9
Mississippi finished #15, ranked #10
Georgia finished #10, ranked #13
Net change of +22 for the conference and more ranked teams than any other conference.

#3 B12: All 4 teams gained position.
Texas finished #3, ranked #2
Oklahoma finished #5, ranked #3
Ok State finished #18, ranked #11
Nebraska finished #30, ranked #22
Net change of +18

#4 B10: tOSU still gets respect at +5 and offsets Iowa's -1. PSU stays unchanged.
tOSU finished #11, ranked #6
Penn State finished #8, ranked #8
Iowa finished #20, ranked #21
Net change of +4

PAC-10: Cal's significant rise was the only bright spot to offset drops by all of the other ranked teams.
USC finished #2, ranked #4
Cal finished #25, ranked #12
Oregon finished #9, ranked #14
Oregon State finished #19, ranked #25
Net change is zero.

Other signs of traditional favoritism are that ND gets ranked based off of one game while the 4 mid-majors from the MWC and the WAC all get hammered with a total net change of -30. The Big East had no teams represented.

If you notice, all 5 of last years original Top 5 finished ranked, and Ohio State at #11 was the lowest. This may be the case this year. The top 3 certainly will finishin the Top 10, and USC and Alabama can not be overlooked.

All of this will change, and in a hurry. Alabama plays Va Tech in week 1, and Georgia plays Okie State. Throw in the BYU -Oklahoma and Oregon-Boise game and 4 of the Top 25 teams are guaranteed to lose n week 1. USC plays Ohio State in week two. So by the end of week two, three of the original Top 13 teams, and fully 20% of the Top 25 teams will have lost.

Ok....several suprises in this poll....however, no polls should be releases until friggin October...once teams begin conference play...

Ohio St at 6 is too high. Maybe 10th would be more appropriate. Same for Penn St....maybe 12th.

Ole Miss is a little high....actually I think the Top 5 is right on...it is 6-10 that I have concerns over...

Let these guys decide it on the field for a month...THEN create a poll...sheesh!

When is CFB finally going to get it right?!?!?!?!?!?!?

One of the great myths in CFB

is that where you start in the polls has an impact on where you finish, meaning that a team that starts in the top 10 has an advantage over a team outside the top 25...not true, widely believed and easily disproved.

Yes, but is still doesn't change the built in advantage of playing for the MNC. If you start in the top 5, you can lose a game and still get to the show. If you start at 20, doesn't work that way.

There's a simple solution for any Division I school to guarantee themselves a spot in a BCS bowl: Don't lose any games. Doesn't matter where they are ranked in a preseason bowl, a DI team that finishes undefeated with be in a BCS game.
