Reeling Rangers End Series With Minnesota Twins

Like sand through an hourglass, so go the Philadelphia Phillies' chances of reaching the postseason.

The first half of the 2012 season comes to a close for both the Phillies and Atlanta Braves Sunday afternoon when the clubs complete a 3-game set at Citizens Bank Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. (ET) with TBS providing the national broadcast. A pair of young right-handers will perform the initial mound duties as Jair Jurrjens gets the ball for the Braves against Vance Worley of the Phils.

Just as time is starting to run out on their playoff hopes, so are the excuses for why the Phillies might fall short despite entering the season as prohibitive -185 favorites to win the NL East and +170 chalk to take the NL pennant. Ryan Howard and Chase Utley are both off the DL after missing most of the first half of the season with assorted injuries, and ace Roy Halladay should rejoin the rotation within the next week or so.

Howard made his season debut in a 5-0 loss to the Braves in the series opener and stroked a pair of hits including a double. As much as the Phillies missed both him and Utley the first three months, the real problem has been the bullpen which reared its ugly head once again in Friday's loss by allowing all five Atlanta runs after the game was scoreless through seven innings.

Philadelphia relievers rank 29th in the majors with a 4.84 ERA and had blown 12 of 30 save opportunities entering Saturday night's tilt that was still pending. The contest was a toss-up on the money line and carried a 9-run total that leaned 'under' at the majority of books monitored by Don Best's Pro Odds.

Worley will be trying to bounce back from one of the worst starts of his young career when he walks to the mound on Sunday. The Mets reached him for six runs on 10 hits in four short innings last Tuesday in New York, and it marked Philly's fifth loss in six starts since Worley returned from his own DL stint in early June. He will be facing the Braves for the first time in 2012, and won his only start vs. them in 2011.

Jurrjens will also be facing the Phils for the first time this season and won both of his 2011 assignments against them. He had severe command problems in April when he walked 10 in 16-1/3 innings, but his time spent in the minors seems to have corrected that problem with Jurrjens issuing just four free passes in 13-1/3 innings since returning to the big league club.

Friday's victory for Atlanta evened the season series between the two clubs at two wins apiece. Three of the first four matchups stayed 'under' the total.

Reeling Rangers Send Oswalt To Mound Vs. Twins
The Texas Rangers will turn to veteran Roy Oswalt in hopes of heading into the all-star break on a winning note when they close their home set with the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Minnesota counters with rookie Cole De Vries in the 7:05 p.m. (ET) start.

Minnesota's 5-1 upset Friday night marked the fifth straight loss for Texas who was a $1.60 favorite in the contest. The Rangers were even heavier favorites for Saturday's tilt at -180 with Derek Holland making his first start in over a month following time on the DL due to a sore left shoulder.

Oswalt is coming off a pounding by the White Sox in Chicago on Tuesday. The right-hander allowed 13 hits in his second consecutive outing, and three of them left the yard as the Pale Hose plated 11 (9 earned) in chasing Oswalt before he could get through the fifth inning. Following an impressive debut against the Rockies on June 22, Oswalt has surrendered 26 hits and 14 earned runs in 10-2/3 innings his last two assignments.

De Vries, an undrafted free agent and Minnesota native, was used in relief on Wednesday after making four starts for the Twins previously. He was used primarily in relief the past two minor league seasons before being shifted to the rotation this year at Triple-A Rochester.

The win on Friday stopped the Twins' 4-game skid against the Rangers that included being swept at home back in mid-April. Entering Saturday, all four games between the clubs this season failed to reach the total.

Yanks-Sox conclude 1st half of season Sunday

NEW YORK YANKEES (51-33)

at BOSTON RED SOX (43-42)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Boston -115, New York +105, Total: 10

After snapping a five-game win streak on Saturday night, the Red Sox look to end the first half of their season with a series split against the rival Yankees on Sunday night.

The Yankees sit comfortably atop the AL East, thanks to a 22-8 record in their past 30 games. They are also 4-1 against Boston this season (all at Fenway Park), scoring 42 runs in these five contests. For Sunday’s capper to the four-game set, New York will send Ivan Nova to the mound in search of his 10th win. The Yankees are 12-4 when Nova takes the hill this year, including 8-1 in his nine road starts. The Red Sox counter with lefty Jon Lester, who has been horrible at Fenway Park, carting a 5.60 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in nine home starts, where the Sox are just 3-6. By the way these two clubs are playing lately, plus the offensive injuries piling up for Boston, most notably Dustin Pedroia (wrist, on DL) and Will Middlebrooks (hamstring), the pick here is NEW YORK getting plus money.

This rare four-star FoxSheets trend also favors the Yankees:

BOSTON is 8-22 (-20.3 Units) against the money line vs. a very good bullpen whose ERA is 3.33 or better this season. The average score was BOSTON 4.1, OPPONENT 5.4 - (Rating = 4*).

Nova (9-3, 4.05 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) has been strong in his past three starts, sporting a 2.84 ERA and 17 K’s in 19 innings. He has allowed 26 base-runners (1.37 WHIP) in this span, though. Nova continues to be much stronger on the road this season with a 3.55 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, fanning 44 batters and walking just 14. He will be making his fifth career start in this rivalry, and his numbers versus the Sox have been pretty horrible (5.91 ERA, 1.50 WHIP). However, when he faced them on April 20, he threw six strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking none. With the All-Star Break starting Monday, the Yankees won’t hesitate to use their bullpen, especially due to their 3.12 ERA and 1.25 WHIP for the season. These numbers are even more impressive on the road (2.48 ERA, 1.21 WHIP), where they are 9-4 with 16 saves in 20 chances.

Lester (5-5, 4.33 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) has mediocre numbers versus the Yanks in his career (4.15 ERA, 1.40 WHIP), but he has a personal 8-3 record against them in 17 starts. However, his team has lost three straight times Lester faced New York, including last September in New York, when he allowed eight runs in just 2.2 innings of work. The Red Sox are just 7-10 in Lester’s 17 starts this season, as he has allowed 4+ runs in eight of these outings. But the last loss on July 3 in Oakland was no fault of his. Lester held the A’s to just one run on four hits, walking one and striking out nine in 6.2 innings. For the season, he has 88 strikeouts and just 28 walks in 108 innings. His bullpen has also been strong this season (3.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP), especially in Fenway Park, where Red Sox relievers cart a 3.18 ERA and 1.16 WHIP.

Sunday's betting tips: Dempster on pitch count

WEATHER TO WATCH

It is going to be steamy in Washington, D.C. again on Sunday with temperatures rising to the high 90's. Before you jump on the over, note the wind is expected to blow inward toward home by game time at 10 mph.

WHO'S HOT

Under is 19-7 in Diamondbacks last 26 Sunday games
Angels are 8-1 in their last 9 games vs. a left-handed starter
Under is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings between the Twins and Rangers (prior to Saturday's game)
Athletics are 11-1 in their last 12 home games vs. a right-handed starter

WHO'S NOT

Astros are 4-20 in Jordan Lyles' last 24 starts
Mariners are 0-4 in their last 4 games with Jeff Nelson behind home plate
Red Sox are 2-11 in Lesters last 13 starts vs. a team with a winning record

KEY STAT

70 to 80 - That's the number of pitches Cubs starter Ryan Dempster will be limited to in his return to the mound after 16 days with a sore throwing shoulder. Dempster's 2.11 ERA would rank first in the National League if he had enough innings to qualify. The Cubs have the 26th ranked bullpen in MLB with a 4.56 ERA.

INJURY THAT SHOULD NOT BE OVERLOOKED

Kia Vaughn, center New York Liberty - Vaughn is the starting center for the Liberty and is questionable Sunday at home vs. San Antonio with a concussion. Vaughn averages 8.8 pts and 5.8 rebounds per game.

GAME OF THE DAY

Yankees vs. Red Sox (-115, 10)

NOTES AND TIPS

The final day before the All-Star game can be tricky and oftentimes strange. Manage your bankroll accordingly and remember that sometimes the best play is the one you don't make.

The home team is 6-1 (5-2 ATS) so far in the CFL. The Roughriders are 3-point underdogs in their home opener against Edmonton on Sunday.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Major league doubleheaders are infrequent now; when they happen, a team can add a 26th player for that day only.

-- Carl Crawford has yet another injury; maybe the Red Sox should've made Theo Epstein take Crawford with him to Wrigleyville.

-- Boston only played Bronx Bombers three times in their first 82 games; they play 15 of their last 80 games against them.

-- Total of 1,066 players signed up to play on the first day of the World Series of Poker's Main Event. First round is usually divided up into four different days. Its an interesting experience seeing it in person.

-- Early line on the All-Star Game: AL, -$122, total 8.5.

-- 46-year old guy named Ronn Matt spit a cherry pit 69 feet Saturday to win the International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship in southwestern Michigan. Thats 23 yards. I really wish I was making that up.

Colts-- New coach, new QB for team that in many ways will resemble an expansion team in '12 and thats not all bad. They better hope Luck is the answer under center, though, or else.

Titans-- Slipped to #31 in rush offense in Munchak's 1st year as HC, after being in top 7 in four of previous five years. 12-7 vs spread in last 19 tilts on artificial turf.

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Jon Niese, New York Mets (7-3, 3.35 ERA)

Niese has won three consecutive starts, allowing only four runs in 21 1/3 innings. The big lefty has pitched at least seven innings in four of his last five starts and walked more than one batter just once in his last six.

Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (9-3, 2.62 ERA)

Capuano may not be heading to the All-Star Game, but he’s certainly pitching like he belongs. He has limited three of his last four opponents to just one run and has struck out 27 batters over that span. Capuano sits seventh in MLB starter money standings, having earned 7.65 units for his supporters.

Slumping

Roy Oswalt, Texas Rangers (2-1, 7.79 ERA)

Oswalt started OK with the Rangers, but has slipped since. He is coming off one of the worst outings of his entire career. The veteran allowed 11 runs (nine earned) in 4 2/3 innings during a loss to the White Sox. Before that he gave up five runs over six innings against Detroit. He has now yielded a whopping 26 hits over those two starts.

Chris Volstad, Chicago Cubs (0-7, 7.94 ERA)

It doesn’t look like almost two months in the minors did Volstad much good. In his first start since mid-May, he was smacked for six runs in just 4 1/3 innings in a loss at Atlanta. Volstad’s last win came way back on July 10, 2011.

MLB betting: Scouting the toughest second-half schedules
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You could be sitting around a crystal ball with Aladdin and still have no idea what lies ahead in the second half of the MLB season.

Nobody predicted that the Baltimore Orioles would be hanging around in the AL East this deep in the season and everybody left the St. Louis Cardinals for dead before they put together an incredible run to win the title last season.

There’s a lot to factor in when you’re trying to determine which teams have the toughest schedules. For example, if you go strictly by the numbers and look at remaining opponents’ current winning percentage, we could just list the entire AL East.

It’s easily the most competitive division in baseball, but what’s the fun in that? These are the three teams that face the toughest road in the second half.

All stats compiled before Thursday’s action.

Baltimore Orioles: 44-37, +13.70 units

The winning percentage of Baltimore’s remaining opponents (.515) is actually a touch lower than that of the Tampa Bay Rays (.522), but we need to take a look at the O’s considering they rank second in MLB money standings. Plus, their strength of schedule in games played to date (.524) tops the bigs.

The Orioles sit in second place in the division at five games back of the Yanks and don’t catch any breaks for the rest of the season. They have 42 road games compared to 39 home dates and finish the year with 12 of their last 18 games on the highway. It’s going to be vtough, but it’s worth noting the O’s have earned almost 12 of their units to date on the road.

Oakland Athletics: 41-42, +7.48

The A’s are in third place in the AL West, 9.5 games back of the Texas Rangers. They’re going to have a tough time cutting into that deficit. Oakland’s remaining opponents’ winning percentage checks in at .520 and the club will face a major grind at the end of the season.

The A’s have a 10-game road trip on the schedule at the end of September with stops in Detroit, New York and Texas. They then go home for a three-game set against the Mariners before getting another kick in the face with the Rangers coming to town for another trio of contests to end the season. Not looking good for A’s supporters.

New York Mets: 42-38, 11.29 units

The Mets’ remaining opponents check in with a .498 winning percentage, which is the highest among any playoff contenders in the National League. They are in a dogfight in the NL East, trailing the division-leading Nationals by 4.5 games.

New York will need to keep it together on a 11-game western road swing that spans from July 26 to Aug. 5. The Mets then finish the season with three games in Atlanta followed by three more in Miami.

MLB betting: Scouting the easiest second-half schedules
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the dog days of summer set in, it’s hard for MLB teams to put out their best effort every time they climb out of the dugout. That’s when a soft second-half schedule can really give teams a break.

Evaluating the schedules for the remainder of the season is hardly an exact science. Teams go through streaks and slumps, suffer major injures, and see big name players come and go around the trade deadline.

Still, some teams clearly face an easier road down the stretch than others. By the numbers, American League clubs generally face tougher schedules than that of the teams in the Senior Circuit because the AL is just better than the NL. It’s that simple.

With that in mind, here’s a look at three teams that face some of the easiest schedules in baseball as they try to secure their playoff spots.

Pittsburgh Pirates: 45-36, +17.32 units

The Pirates are running away with the MLB money standings, almost four units ahead of the second-place Baltimore Orioles, and it looks the Bucs could build on their booty. The Pirates’ remaining opponents own just a .459 winning percentage. They have 42 of their 81 remaining games at home, where they have pocketed better than 13 units with a 26-13 record.

The longest stretch they’re away from home is a 10-game set later this month, but they should be able to build some momentum early in that trip, visiting Houston for four games before playing three at Wrigley Field. They finish that swing with three more at Cincinnati and close out the season with six games at home.

San Francisco Giants: 45-37, +6.63 units

The Giants trail the Dodgers by just a half a game and will be looking to make some hay in the second half. Their remaining opponents own a .471 winning percentage.

San Francisco doesn’t spend more than seven straight games on the road for the rest of the year and the club has 10 straight home games before visiting the Padres and Dodgers to finish the season. The Giants will likely hold their own destiny in the pennant race with four series left against the Dodgers – two home, two away.

Chicago White Sox: 44-37, +5.73 units

The AL Central-leading White Sox have the easiest remaining schedule of any team in the American League. Chicago’s remaining opponents own a .497 winning percentage. The White Sox have been dominant on the road so far, going 23-16 as visitors to net more than 11 units.

They’ll need to keep that going and come out of the All-Star break hot with a stretch that sees them play 13 of 16 games on the road beginning July 13. If they ever get their game together at home, they’ll be really dangerous.
