Iglesias cashing the Under with ease

In Raisel Iglesias's past seven outings, the Under has gone 6-1.

The Cincinnati Reds hurler is scheduled to get the nod Wednesday opposite Jason Hammel and the Chicago Cubs.

At the time of writing, the total for the game was off the board.

Yankees 1B Teixeira to miss two more weeks

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is on crutches and will be out of the lineup for at least two more weeks while a bone bruise heals.

Teixeira underwent tests on Tuesday that showed his sore right shin does not have a broken bone but rather a serious bruise.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi expects Teixeira to be back before the end of the regular season. There were 32 games remaining entering Tuesday night.

Red Sox moving Ramirez to first base

Hanley Ramirez's days as an outfielder are over.

If Ramirez plays again this season -- and at this point, that is far from a given -- it would be at his adopted first base, Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo announced Tuesday before a 3-1 loss to the Yankees at Fenway Park.

"With how the young kids have been doing in the outfield, I think we want to give them the time there that they deserve," Lovullo said, referring to Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Rusney Castillo. "I think the timing of Hanley's (right shoulder) injury, it's pushing him back a little bit. It's just condensing that ability to go out and play left field until he transitions to first base. Had it been day-to-day, he probably would have had a few moments in left field still.

"I think we're looking a little bit forward today knowing that, maybe in a week, he might come back and could be ready to play first base.

Preview: Mystics (16-12) at Mercury (17-13)

Date: September 02, 2015 3:30 PM EDT

Brittney Griner threw home her second dunk of the season last week.

That didn't bother the Washington Mystics, who held her and DeWanna Bonner in check in a victory.

The visiting Mystics can complete a sweep of the season series for the first time in five years Wednesday by handing the Phoenix Mercury a third straight defeat.

Washington coach Mike Thibault praised his club's defensive effort in last Friday's 71-63 win over Phoenix. Bonner, fifth in the league with 16.7 points per game, was held to 10 on 3-of-10 shooting.

Griner provided the game's signature moment with a one-handed slam in the third quarter. That was part of a quiet effort in which she had 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting with five fouls.

"We made her take tough shots too," Thibault said. "We'll let her have the dunk as long as we get the win."

Mercury forward Monique Currie endured a miserable return to the Verizon Center with three points in 14 foul-plagued minutes against the club she was with over her previous seven-plus seasons.

Ivory Latta led Washington (16-12) as she matched a season high with 24 points in the club's eighth straight win over a Western Conference foe.

That streak ended with Sunday's 69-59 defeat at Seattle in the opener of a four-game trip. The Mystics led by as many as 14 points in the first half before totaling 20 in a dismal second.

Latta scored 12 for the short-handed club. Kara Lawson, averaging 9.6 points and a team-high 3.6 assists, was out with a back injury. Tayler Hill, averaging 7.3, was out with an ankle problem.

Phoenix (17-13) also couldn't find the range in the second half Sunday with 22 points after the break in a 71-61 loss at Minnesota in its third game in four days. Bonner scored 15 points while Griner had 13 with seven rebounds and a WNBA season-high nine blocks.

Bonner is averaging 12.5 points on 34.6 percent shooting in the last two games after averaging 23.5 on 56.0 percent in her previous two.

The Mercury have a magic number of three to clinch home-court advantage in the first round.

Cards look to sweep Nats

September 2, 2015

WASHINGTON NATIONALS (66-65) at ST LOUIS CARDINALS (86-46)

First pitch: Wednesday, 8:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Washington +110, St. Louis -120, Total: 6.5

The Nationals look to keep their slim playoff chances alive when they face an elite Cardinals team on Wednesday.

Washington was unable to win the first game of this series, losing 8-5 in St. Louis and the defeat puts them at just one game over .500 on the season. The Nats have fallen 6.5 games behind the division-leading New York Mets and will need to start winning games at a remarkable clip if they are going to sneak their way into the playoffs. The Cardinals, meanwhile, have won four straight games and nine of their past 10 as well. St. Louis is six games ahead of the Pirates in the highly competitive NL Central and will look to improve to 8-0 at Busch Stadium against the Nationals since 2013.

This game is going to feature some serious heavyweights on the mound, as RHP Max Scherzer (11-11, 2.88 ERA, 209 K) will take the mound for the Nationals and he’ll face RHP Michael Wacha (15-4, 2.69 ERA, 134 K) of the Cardinals. Washington is 16-6 against the money line in road games when playing on a Wednesday over the past two seasons. St. Louis, however, is an incredible 71-27 against the money line as a favorite of -110 or higher this season. OF Denard Span (Hip), 1B Tyler Moore (Ankle) and 2B Dan Uggla (Back) are on the DL for the Nationals and the Cardinals will continue to play without OFs Randal Grichuk (Elbow), Matt Holliday (Quad) and Jon Jay (Wrist).

The Nationals had huge expectations for this season, but have really underperformed and now find themselves in a position where it’ll be nearly impossible to make it to the playoffs. Part of the reason this team was so confident was due to the signing of Scherzer, and he has really struggled recently after a hot start to the year. The Washington ace has allowed 13 earned runs over his past 16.0 innings of work and he’s allowed 7.0 hits per game over his past three starts. He’ll need to turn things around if the Nationals are going to find a way to defeat the Cardinals on Wednesday. He pitched seven innings and allowed just two earned runs in his only start against St. Louis this year, but Washington lost that game 4-1.

The Nationals have had a lot of trouble hitting Wacha in the past and guys like OF Bryce Harper (.333, 31 HR, 78 RBI), 3B Anthony Rendon (.268, 3 HR, 16 RBI) and 1B Ryan Zimmerman (.231, 14 HR, 64 RBI) will need to step it up on Wednesday. They are a combined 4-for-21 against Wacha with a single homer and RBI, which came from Rendon. Zimmerman has been hot lately, though, homering in two straight games and five of the past 10.

The Cardinals have been the best team in baseball all season and they have stayed hot recently. St. Louis has won nine of its past 10 games and should be feeling extremely confident with Wacha heading to the mound on Wednesday. He’s been on fire as of late, allowing just four earned runs over his past six starts (39.0 IP). The last time Wacha faced this Nationals team, he outdueled Scherzer with seven innings of one-run ball. He struck out six batters in that game and will look to to stifle Washington’s hitters once again in this one.

Some of the guys that will be counted on to produce at the plate in this game are OFs Jason Heyward (.290, 11 HR, 50 RBI), Stephen Piscotty (.338, 4 HR, 24 RBI) and Brandon Moss (.220, 18 HR, 57 RBI). Heyward is 2-for-3 in his career against Scherzer and has seven hits with four RBI over the past four games. Piscotty has never faced Scherzer, but the 24-year-old enters this contest on a nine-game hitting streak, racking up two homers and 11 RBI in that time. Moss, meanwhile, is the only player who has hit a homer off of Scherzer in this lineup.

Game of the Day: Nationals at Cardinals

Washington Nationals at St. Louis Cardinals (-121, 6.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals are seemingly unstoppable entering the stretch run of the regular season, and are making a habit of hurting other teams’ chances of getting a shot at them in the postseason. The Cardinals aim for their fifth straight victory and a three-game sweep of the visiting Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

After taking two of three from wild-card contender San Francisco last weekend, the Cardinals have damaged Washington’s slim playoff hopes with two straight wins, including a stunning 8-5 comeback victory Tuesday. St. Louis scored twice in the eighth to tie it and won it on Brandon Moss’ walk-off homer to move 40 games above .500. Washington ace Max Scherzer, a St. Louis native, looks to snap a five-start winless streak when he makes his second big-league start in his hometown and his first since a loss in 2008. Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha looks to continue his breakout season when he tries to become the fourth pitcher with at least 16 wins in the majors this season.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN, MASN 2 (Washington), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

LINE HISTORY: The Cardinals have been bet from their opening number of -114 to currently sit at -121. The total has held steady at 6.5.

INJURY REPORT:

Nationals - SP S. Strasburgh (questionable Friday, back), 1B T. Moore (15-day DL, ankle), RP A. Barrett (15-day DL, elbow), CF D. Span (out for season, hip).

Cardinals - SP C. Martinez (day-to-day, back), SP L. Lynn (questionable Friday, ankle), 1B M. Reynolds (doubtful Wednesday, wrist), CF (15-day DL, wrist), LF M. Holliday (15-day DL, quad), RP M. Harris (15-day DL, groin), 1B M. Adams (early September, quad), CF R. Grichuk (early September, elbow).

WEATHER REPORT: It should be a clear night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, wit a temperatures in the mid 80s and a very slight four imle per hour wind blowing out to left field.

UMPIRE REPORT: John Tumpane will be the man calling balls and strikes in tonight's game. Tumpane is an under umpire, with the under going 16-5-2 when he is behind the plate and has a strike percentage of 63.87. He is also a homer ump, with home teams going 15-8.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "After a monster start to the season, Max Scherzer has tailed off, just 2-6 with a 5.22 ERA his last eight overall team starts. Surprisingly he is also winless, 0-3, this season as an underdog. On the flip side Wacha enters 5-1 with a 0.92 ERA his last six team starts. Better team and better current form arm, points us in the Cardinals direction tonight." - Covers Expert Marc Lawrence.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (11-11, 2.88 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (15-4, 2.69)

Scherzer turns the page on a tough month of August in which he was 0-3 with a 6.43 ERA in five starts. He has lost his last three turns, including a 4-3 defeat against Miami last time out in which he allowed four runs over seven frames. The 31-year-old is 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA in three starts against the Cardinals, including a tough-luck loss April 23 in which he gave up two runs in seven frames.

Wacha has won four straight decisions and posted seven consecutive quality starts. The 24-year-old Texan was hurt by his defense in his last outing, as he allowed four runs - all unearned - in six innings in a no-decision at San Francisco. Wacha beat the Nationals on April 23, holding them to one run and five hits over seven innings to improve to 2-1 with a 0.79 ERA in three meetings.

TRENDS:

* Nationals are 2-9 in their last 11 road games.
* Cardinals are 6-0 in Wacha's last six home starts with a total set at 6.5 or lower.
* Over is 4-0 in the Nationals last four road games vs. a right-handed starter.
* Under is 5-0 in Wacha's last five home starts.

COVERS CONSENSUS: A whopping 73.49 percent of the public is backing the Cardinals at 121.
