Pelicans, Cunningham have 3-year deal

July 4, 2015

NEW ORLEANS (AP) People familiar with the negotiations say the New Orleans Pelicans and forward Dante Cunningham have agreed on a three-year contract extension worth about $9 million.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Saturday because the free-agent contract, which cannot officially be signed until July 9, has not been announced.

The Pelicans first signed the 6-foot-8 Cunningham as a free agent last December. He played in 66 regular season games, starting 27, and averaged 5.2 points and 3.9 rebounds in 25 minutes.

The 28-year-old Cunningham was relied upon mostly for his defense. His contract includes a third-year player option. His return gives the Pelicans nearly all of their regulars back for next season except guard Norris Cole, who remains a restricted free agent.

Kings, C Koufos agree on 4 years, $33M

July 5, 2015

A day after locking up a pair of guards, the Sacramento Kings invested in their front court.

Center Kosta Koufos agreed to a $33 million, four-year contract with the Kings on Saturday night, a person with knowledge of the deal said.

The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because contracts can't be completed until the NBA's moratorium on free agency ends Thursday, said the fourth year is a player option.

ESPN first reported the agreement.

Koufos played behind Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph in Memphis the past two seasons. In Sacramento, the 7-footer is another big man for a front court that includes All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins and sixth overall draft pick Willie Cauley-Stein.

Koufos has career averages of 5.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in seven seasons. He also has played for Utah, Minnesota and Denver - where he spent parts of three years under current Kings coach George Karl.

The deal is a sizeable commitment considering Koufos most likely will back up Cousins. But it's the price the Kings felt they had to pay in a market where the most coveted free agents go to teams with recent success.

Sacramento has missed the playoffs nine straight seasons and is still trying to come together under Karl, who took over at the All-Star break after Tyrone Corbin and Michael Malone were fired a few months apart. There also have been repeated reports of tension between Karl and Cousins - and Karl and owner Vivek Ranadive.

New basketball operations leader Vlade Divac has been left repairing relationships and the roster, with the latter beginning to take shape the past two days.

The Kings reached agreements with point guard Rajon Rondo and shooting guard Marco Belinelli on Friday. Rondo's deal is for one year and about $10 million, and Belinelli's contract is for $19 million and three years.

Those agreements followed a head-scratching start to the week for Divac and the Kings. They opened free agency by trading last year's first-round pick, Nik Stauskas, along with Jason Thompson and Carl Landry to Philadelphia to clear more than $16 million in salary cap space next season.

The Kings reportedly received the rights to two international players and a second-round pick in the deal, but also gave up a first-round pick in 2018 that is top-10 protected plus the right to swap first-round draft choices in 2016 and 2017.

Brewer, Beverley to re-sign with Rockets

July 3, 2015

The Rockets have reached deals with Corey Brewer and Patrick Beverley to keep them in Houston.

The agreements came on Friday, with Beverley's agent Kevin Bradbury saying his client got a four-year, $23.4 million deal. The final year of the contract is non-guaranteed.

A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that Brewer agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal. The person requested anonymity because the deal has not been officially announced. Both contracts cannot be signed until July 9.

Beverley gives the Rockets a tenacious defender at point guard who was sorely missed when he went down with a wrist injury.

Brewer provided a boost when he was acquired during the season in a trade from Minnesota.

Yahoo Sports first reported both agreements.

Kings deals: Rondo 1 year, Belinelli 3

July 3, 2015

After missing targets at the start of free agency, the Sacramento Kings finally filled out their backcourt Friday.

Whether the team can find a way to blend its talent together remains a topic for debate.

The Kings reached agreements with point guard Rajon Rondo and shooting guard Marco Belinelli, securing the two positions the team coveted most this summer.

Rondo's deal is for one year and $10 million, a person with direct knowledge of the agreement said. Belinelli's contract is for $19 million and three years, a second person familiar with that deal said.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because contracts can't be completed until the moratorium on free agency ends Thursday.

Belinelli and the Kings reached an agreement in the morning while the team was meeting with Rondo in Sacramento. A few hours later, Rondo decided to join him in California's capital city.

Rondo, a four-time All-Star who is trying to recover from a brief but tumultuous tenure in Dallas, joins a franchise that has been one of the NBA's most chaotic recently.

The Kings fired two coaches last season, swiped decision-making power from general manager Pete D'Alessandro - who later left for a job in Denver's front office - and hired former franchise center Vlade Divac to oversee basketball operations.

New coach George Karl has yet to mesh with All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins, with several reported rifts already. Team chemistry has been a major issue and so has player confidence in majority owner Vivek Ranadive's moves.

The Kings are hoping the 29-year-old Rondo can return to the player he was early in his career and revive the struggling franchise.

Rondo was benched several times last season by Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle after coming over in a December trade from Boston, where he helped the Celtics win the 2008 title and return to the NBA Finals in 2010.

Rondo sat out the final three games in Dallas' first-round loss to Houston with what the team called a back injury - though he had already been benched by Carlisle again in the Game 2 loss. He was a bad fit for an offense that regressed after being among the league's best at the time of the trade, and he also missed six games because of a broken bone near his left eye.

Rondo had his best years with the Celtics, who were led by Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce when they won the 2008 title under coach Doc Rivers. But he hasn't been the same since missing large parts of two seasons because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Rondo is averaging 10.8 points, 8.3 assists and 3.6 rebounds in nine seasons.

He was courted hard by Kings forward and friend Rudy Gay. Rondo opted for a one-year deal hoping to prove he can still play at an All-Star level before the salary cap is expected to rise dramatically next summer when the NBA's new television deal kicks in.

It's still somewhat murky what Rondo's addition means for point guard Darren Collison, who signed a three-year, $16 million deal with the Kings last summer. Collison played well until missing the final 33 games with a core muscle injury that required surgery.

The person with knowledge of Rondo's deal said to expect Collison and Rondo to share the backcourt most of the time.

Belinelli gives the Kings the shooting guard they've been searching for to stretch the floor for All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins. Wesley Matthews, who is coming off a ruptured Achilles tendon with Portland, turned down Sacramento's $64 million, four-year offer Thursday to accept a deal with Dallas.

Belinelli has played the past two seasons with San Antonio, helping the Spurs win the NBA championship in 2014. He is shooting 43 percent in his eight-year career, including 39.2 percent from 3-point range.

Belinelli averaged 9.2 points and 22.4 minutes in 62 games with the Spurs last season. He was drafted 18th overall by Golden State in 2007 and also has played for Toronto, New Orleans and Chicago.

The deals struck Friday are a big boost after a head-scratching week for Divac and the Kings. They started free agency by trading last year's first-round pick, Nik Stauskas, along with Jason Thompson and Carl Landry to Philadelphia to clear more than $16 million in salary cap space next season.

The Kings reportedly received the rights to two international players and a second-round pick in the deal but also gave up a first-round pick in 2018 that is top-10 protected plus the right to swap first-round draft choices in 2016 and 2017.

Knicks agree to deal with C Robin Lopez

July 3, 2015

NEW YORK (AP) Robin Lopez is joining the Knicks, turning New York's NBA rivalry into a family affair.

Lopez agreed to sign with the Knicks on Friday, a person with knowledge of the details said, and will play just across town from twin brother and Brooklyn Nets center, Brook.

Robin Lopez will leave the Portland Trail Blazers to fill the open spot in the middle for the Knicks, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because contracts can't yet be signed. Yahoo Sports reported Lopez would receive a four-year deal worth $54 million.

Lopez wrote on Twitter that he was ''excited to part of the (hash) Knicks legacy,'' adding that it would be like the musical ''On the Town'' only with ''way more box outs & dunks.''

The Knicks have been seeking a center since trading Tyson Chandler last summer. They had also spoken to DeAndre Jordan and Greg Monroe before those players chose to go elsewhere.

Robin Lopez's decision comes just days after Brook Lopez agreed to stay with the Nets for a reported $60 million over three years.

Unlike his brother, Robin Lopez is limited offensively but is a solid defensive player. He has averaged 8.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in his career, which includes four years in Phoenix and a stop in New Orleans before two seasons with Portland.

He becomes the second player to leave the Blazers for the Knicks this summer. Arron Afflalo agreed to a $16 million, two-year deal on Thursday. The Knicks came into the summer with more than $25 million to spend and have enough left to keep looking for more help on the free-agent market.

Mavs, C Jordan agree to four-year deal

July 3, 2015

DALLAS (AP) DeAndre Jordan has chosen the Mavericks over the Los Angeles Clippers in what turned into a tense boom-or-bust wait for Dallas in pursuit of the free-agent center.

Two people familiar with the deal tell The Associated Press that the NBA rebound leader agreed to terms Friday. One said the deal was worth $80 million over four years. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because no deals can be completed and signed until Thursday.

This is the biggest free-agent pickup in Mark Cuban's 15 years as Dallas owner, after three straight summers of losing out on the big names. The deal comes two days after the Mavericks lost their backup plan when last season's starter, Tyson Chandler, bolted for Phoenix.

The last of Jordan's four meetings was with the Clippers. But coach Doc Rivers couldn't persuade the Texas native to stick with Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and the franchise that drafted him seven years ago.

Jordan, who turns 27 this month, led the NBA in rebounding the past two seasons and is coming off career-best averages of 11.5 points and 15.0 rebounds. Since the Clippers drafted the Texas A&M star with the 35th overall pick in 2008, Jordan has averaged 8.0 points and 9.0 rebounds.

The 6-foot-11 Houston native figures to have a more prominent role in Dallas after being mostly an alley-oop and second-chance option behind Paul and Griffin in Los Angeles.

His best season helped the Clippers get within a victory of their first trip to the Western Conference finals. But Los Angeles collapsed in the second half of a Game 6 loss at home with a chance to close out Houston and dropped the deciding game on the road.

Now Jordan's job will be to get the Mavericks out of the first round for the first time since they won the franchise's only championship in 2011.

The first step to landing Jordan might have come late Thursday when shooting guard Wesley Matthews agreed to a four-year contract with terms that were going to depend on whether Jordan decided to join the former Portland player in Dallas.

Before Matthews' commitment, the only starters returning for the Mavericks were 37-year-old star Dirk Nowitzki, going into his 18th season and no longer the top scoring option, and forward Chandler Parsons.

The 26-year-old Parsons was the closest thing Dallas had to a young building block after the failed December trade with Boston for point guard Rajon Rondo, who clashed with coach Rick Carlisle and was banished two games into a first-round playoff loss to Houston. Rondo is a free agent.

The Mavericks also let shooting guard Monta Ellis go to Indiana after he led them in scoring - the first player other than Nowitzki to do that since 2000. Dallas didn't contact Ellis in free agency, and he agreed to a four-year, $44 million deal with Indiana on Thursday.

Parsons promised to be the primary recruiter in free agency the day after losing to his former team in a five-game series. He missed all but the first game because of a right knee injury that required surgery after the season.

And Parsons followed through, dining with Jordan frequently in the days before free agency opened. That included an impromptu dinner along with Cuban and president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson late Tuesday night in Los Angeles, and another long meeting Wednesday.

Ultimately, the Mavericks succeeded with Jordan where they failed with the likes of Deron Williams, Dwight Howard and Carmelo Anthony over the past three summers. All were targets, some more realistic than others, after Cuban chose salary-cap space over keeping key pieces of his championship team.

Chandler was among those who didn't return four years ago, signing a four-year deal with the New York Knicks. He returned in a trade for the final year of that contract, but is leaving again on another four-year deal with the Suns after the Mavericks decided to pursue Jordan first.

The loss of Jordan, who also met with the Lakers and Knicks, leaves the Clippers looking for a center. Jordan's backup, Glen Davis, also is a free agent.

Had Chandler not agreed on his four-year, $52 million deal with the Suns, the Clippers could have pursued a sign-and-trade agreement with Dallas involving the 7-footer who went to high school in the Los Angeles area. The Clippers drafted Chandler second overall in 2001 but traded him to Chicago on draft night.

Wade stays with Heat for 1yr/$20M

July 2, 2015

MIAMI (AP) Dwyane Wade is staying with the Miami Heat.

Wade informed the Heat on Thursday that he will accept their one-year offer to re-sign for $20 million for next season, said a person familiar with the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no NBA deals can be finalized this summer until July 9.

The decision ends a weeks-long, sometimes-contentious saga between the Heat and their franchise player. Wade was open to the idea of leaving Miami over a contract dispute, moreso than ever before.

But in the end, the three-time champion and the only team for whom he's played worked out a deal that conceivably could mean he will finish his career in Miami.

An 11-time All-Star, Wade averaged 21.5 points this past season.

''It has been an honor and privilege to play with the Miami Heat the past 12 years,'' Wade said in a statement first released to AP. ''The Heat family and I have shared incredible moments over the years and I look forward to continuing our journey. I am extremely proud of my personal contributions in helping to build the Heat franchise and for bringing three NBA championship wins to our great city.''

Wade could have made $16.1 million this season on the second year of a two-year deal, but opted out with hopes of getting a longer-term, more-lucrative contract.

For now, the more-lucrative part was enough to appease Miami's all-time leading scorer.

''For my entire NBA career, Miami has always been my city and my home,'' Wade said. ''I'm overwhelmed with the love and support the Miami community have consistently shown me and my family throughout the years.''

This was Wade's third foray into free agency in the last five years, and this one seemed the most dicey of all.

From talk of an impasse between the sides several weeks before free agency even began, to social-media over analysis of Wade speaking of Miami in the past tense in his role as a television analyst during the NBA Finals and even the widespread perception that a recent image of his father wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers shirt was a sign of a looming Heat departure, it has seemed like a most tenuous time.

All the angst was for naught.

Wade considered other teams - the Los Angeles Lakers, in particular - but lure of staying home was ultimately too strong.

''This contract is a win-win for both Dwyane and the Heat,'' Wade's agent, Henry Thomas, said. ''Not only does Dwyane get to extend his Hall of Fame-worthy career with the only franchise for whom he has ever played, but he will have the flexibility next summer to sign an additional deal.

''And the Heat gets to keep their franchise cornerstone while having the ability to build a championship-contending roster.''

Report: Duncan returning for 19th season

July 2, 2015

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Tim Duncan is returning to San Antonio for a 19th season.

Duncan tells the San Antonio Express-News that ''I'll be on the court next year.'' Until Duncan made his announcement Thursday, there was speculation that he could call it a career after the Spurs lost to the Los Angeles Clippers in a thrilling seven-game series in the first round of the playoffs.

Many expected him to return, particularly since he was coming off such a strong season. Duncan averaged 13.9 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocks and earned third team All-NBA and second team All-Defense honors.

Duncan turned 39 in April and accompanied the Spurs on a recruiting trip for star free agent LaMarcus Aldridge on Wednesday.

Duncan told the newspaper that the trip to Los Angeles to meet with Aldridge offered the opportunity for a face-to-face chat with coach and team president Gregg Popovich about next season. The conversation solidified his desire to return for another year and chase his sixth championship.

Duncan will likely not agree to terms on a new contract until the Spurs know if Aldridge will be coming to town to play beside him in the San Antonio frontcourt.

The Spurs are still waiting to hear if Manu Ginobili, another member of the franchise's Big Three with Duncan and Tony Parker, will return next season.

Pacers, Ellis agree to 4-year, $44M deal

July 2, 2015

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Pacers got the shooting guard they coveted.

Monta Ellis' family found the welcoming community it wanted -- and the 29-year-old got the $44 million he was chasing.

After hitting the trifecta Thursday by agreeing to a four-year deal that includes a player option for the final year, Ellis and the Pacers will now work together to bring Indiana that elusive NBA title. League rules prohibit the contract from being signed until July 9, but Ellis just couldn't wait that long to make a decision.

''Last evening they (Larry Bird and Ellis) had dinner,'' agent Jeff Fried said after confirming the contract terms. ''Monta who is not a very animated young man, enjoyed it. He just felt the community, the culture of the team represented what he is about -- the person who gives it his all on the court.''

The 6-foot-3 Ellis joins a team that already has two-time All-Stars Paul George and Roy Hibbert, combo guard George Hill who is coming off a career-best season and promising 19-year-old Myles Turner, Indiana's top draft pick last week.

Ellis also becomes a key cog in the Pacers transition from the plodding, half-court offense they used to make the Eastern Conference finals in 2013 and 2014 to the up-tempo style that is flourishing around the league.

''The first thing is going to be how hard it's going to be to play the way Larry wants us to play,'' assistant coach Dan Burke said after running practice with Indiana's summer league team. ''You can't just say you're going to do it. It's hard.''

Bird, the Pacers' president of basketball operations, has been adamant about making the switch since a season-ending loss left Indiana out of last season's playoffs.

And he's been making the moves to help push the process. Ellis' talent, passion and intensity should help.

''Larry spoke about a bit of an up tempo style and how Monta really would fit in perfectly with the players they have,'' Fried said. ''Larry also spoke a lot about how he gets Monta, how he understands, he cares, he's passionate. Larry understands that type of athlete.''

Almost from the moment Ellis opted out of his deal in Dallas, there was speculation he would land with Indiana.

Sacramento also made a run, offering Ellis $48 million. It's unclear whether the dysfunction exposed inside the Kings' organization before the draft played a factor in Ellis decision, but it certainly didn't help. Neither did California's high tax rate.

But Bird gave no hint a deal was imminent when he left Thursday's practice without taking questions.

Ellis averaged 18.9 points and 4.1 assists last season, his second with the Mavericks, but his defense has been questioned and he only shot 28.5 percent on 3-pointers last season.

Still, he adds scoring punch to a team that finished 24th in the league in points per game mostly without the injured George.

When Indiana opens the season this fall, it could have a dramatically different look.

Hill will likely log more minutes at point guard. Bird and coach Frank Vogel have already said Hibbert will play fewer minutes and there is speculation he still could be traded. Power forward David West opted out of his deal worth more than $12 million last week, and a healthier George could see part-time duty in West's old spot.

Ellis figured the Pacers were the right team at the right time and couldn't say no.

''We wanted to make sure he would be in a good situation for the relative long term in an environment that fit him well and a community that fit his family well,'' Fried said. ''This just feels like the perfect home for him.''
