ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer, Colby Lewis pitched six innings for his 16th victory and the AL West-leading Texas Rangers beat the Houston Astros 8-2 Thursday night to complete a four-game sweep.
Shin Soo-Choo matched his career high with four hits, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Rangers, who entered the series trailing the Astros by 1 1/2 games. Texas now leads the division by 2 1/2 games with 16 remaining, including three at Houston from Sept. 25-27.
The Astros finished a 2-8 trip and have a 1 1/2-game lead for the second AL wild card over Minnesota.
Rookie right-hander Lance McCullers (5-6) took the loss.
Lewis (16-8) allowed two runs and seven hits, adding to his career high for wins.
ANGELS 11, TWINS 8
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mike Trout hit a grand slam and a solo shot to set a career high for home runs in a season with 38, and Los Angeles beat Minnesota.
The reigning AL MVP's grand slam in the second inning erased most of an early 5-0 deficit, and he led off the fourth with his second homer of the game.
Taylor Featherston and Chris Iannetta also homered and Huston Street earned his 36th save for the Angels, who pulled within 2 1/2 games of Houston in the race for the second AL wild card.
Torii Hunter and Aaron Hicks went deep for the Twins. Tommy Milone lasted just 1 1-3 innings despite being staked to that five-run lead. He gave up five runs, four hits and three walks.
CUBS 9, PIRATES 6
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Anthony Rizzo started a six-run fifth inning with his 30th homer, and Chicago defeated Pittsburgh to take three of four in an important series between NL playoff contenders.
Pirates rookie shortstop Jung Ho Kang is out six to eight months after breaking his left leg and injuring his knee in the first inning when Chris Coghlan slid into him while trying to break up a double play.
The Cubs moved within two games of Pittsburgh for the top wild card. The Pirates trail first-place St. Louis by five games in the NL Central.
Chicago turned a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead with the fifth-inning outburst that included a two-run double by reliever Clayton Richard (4-2) and RBI singles by Addison Russell and Tommy La Stella.
Cubs rookie Kris Bryant had his second straight three-hit game. Travis Wood struck out five in two perfect innings for his second save.
Charlie Morton (9-8) lost for the fourth time in five starts. Gregory Polanco, Pedro Alvarez and Travis Snider homered for the Pirates.
CARDINALS 6, BREWERS 3
MILWAUKEE (AP) - John Lackey pitched seven shutout innings and St. Louis beat Milwaukee in a game delayed after Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson was hit in the head by a line drive.
The Cardinals swept the three-game series to extend their winning streak to four.
Nelson (11-13) was struck in the back of the head by a liner from Tommy Pham in the third inning. Nelson crumpled on the mound and remained prone face down for about a minute. He later walked off the field and was hospitalized after a CT scan showed a bruise.
Lackey (12-9) scattered five hits and two walks while striking out eight. He has a 2.23 ERA in his last 17 starts.
Pham tripled, doubled and singled, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Matt Carpenter had three hits, including a home run.
Milwaukee dropped its sixth in a row.
BLUE JAYS 5, BRAVES 0
ATLANTA (AP) - Marco Estrada combined with Roberto Osuna on a three-hitter, and Toronto blanked Atlanta to extend its lead in the AL East.
Cliff Pennington, Edwin Encarnacion and Josh Donaldson homered for the Blue Jays, who lead the New York Yankees by 3 1/2 games. Toronto won two of three for its first series win over the Braves since 2008.
Estrada (13-8) allowed three hits in eight innings. He did not allow a runner to reach second base.
Encarnacion connected off Matt Wisler (5-8). Pennington hit a three-run shot later in the inning. The three homers boosted Toronto's season total to 207, most in the majors.
Wisler has lost seven straight decisions.
ROYALS 8, INDIANS 4
CLEVELAND (AP) - Omar Infante drove in a career-high seven runs and Kansas City overcame some early sloppiness against Cleveland.
Infante, a veteran infielder making his first start in 11 days, hit a three-run homer in the second inning off Corey Kluber (8-14), added a two-run double in the fifth after the Indians pulled their ace and a two-run single in the seventh.
Yordana Ventura (12-8) went five innings, retiring struggling All-Star Jason Kipnis with the bases loaded to end the fifth as the AL Central-leading Royals, who had three errors in the first three innings and four overall, split the four-game series. Kansas City won for just the fourth time in 13 games.
Greg Holland got his 32nd save.
Kluber started for the first time since Aug. 29 after being sidelined with a hamstring injury. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner allowed two earned runs and five hits in four innings.
MARLINS 6, NATIONALS 4
WASHINGTON (AP) - Justin Bour and Martin Prado homered for the second straight game, and Miami dented Washington's fading playoff hopes.
The Nationals, opening their 11-game final homestand, fell eight games behind the first-place New York Mets in the NL East.
Ian Desmond homered, singled and drove in four runs for Washington, which had won four straight. Tanner Roark (4-6) took the loss, allowing six runs and eight hits over five innings.
Jarred Cosart (2-4) turned in his third straight productive effort since being recalled from the minors. He gave up two runs and three hits in six innings.
A.J. Ramos got four outs for his 28th save. Miami has won 12 of 16.
ORIOLES 4, RAYS 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Adam Jones hit a go-ahead, two-run single with two outs in a four-run eighth inning, and Baltimore topped Tampa Bay.
Baltimore moved within 4 1/2 games of Houston for the second AL wild card.
Chaz Roe (4-2) pitched 1 1-3 hitless innings. Darren O'Day retired three straight batters for his third save, sending the Rays to their fifth defeat in six games.
John Jaso homered off Orioles starter Chris Tillman, a drive that landed on the C-ring catwalk above right field and never came down. It was the fifth home run at Tropicana Field that did not come down, the first since Boston's David Ortiz hit one on Sept. 17, 2008.
Alex Colome (6-5) took the loss.
ATHLETICS 4, WHITE SOX 2
CHICAGO (AP) - Billy Butler hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning off David Robertson, and Oakland Athletics rallied to beat Chicago.
Robertson (6-4) blew his seventh save in 36 chances when he allowed a double to Brett Lawrie, a single to Danny Valencia and Butler's 13th homer.
White Sox right fielder Avisail Garcia jumped at the wall and appeared to catch Butler's drive, but the ball fell out of his glove and into the Oakland bullpen as he hit the fence.
Sean Doolittle (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings.
Chicago starter Jose Quintana tossed four-hit ball through seven innings and Mike Olt homered for the second consecutive day.
