Tigers over streak reaching ridiculous levels

With an 8-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday, the Detroit Tigers have gone over in 13 consecutive contests.

Those 13 games have seen the Tigers average 5.1 runs while allowing 6.7 runs per game. The combined average of 11.8 runs per game compares to the average closing total of 7.9.

The torrid over pace has the Tigers with the sixth highest over rate in the MLB with a 42-34-2 over/under record on the season to date.

The Tigers will head to Toronto for a three-game series with the Blue Jays that starts Friday.

MLB Betting Cheat Sheet: Too Close for Comfort in the AL East

Jul 02, 2015

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

Too Close for Comfort in the AL East

Only one game separates the Yankees, Orioles, Blue Jays and Rays in the American League East. The Yankees host the Rays in a three game set in the Bronx this weekend, and the Rays have lost eight of 10 heading in Thursday's series finale versus Cleveland. Tampa will get a crack at some struggling Yankees starters though, as Masahiro Tanaka, C.C. Sabathia and Michael Pineda are all coming off rough outings.

Hamilton Faces Former Team

The Angels organization gave Josh Hamilton a five year $125 million dollar contract, and he gave them very little in return. Hamilton is back home in Texas, and he was 2-for-4 in his first game off the DL against the Orioles on Tuesday. The Rangers will host the Angels in a three game series in Arlington over the weekend, and he'll have a chance to add insult to injury against his former team.

Detroit Deadly in Day Games

The Tigers are leading the league, batting .301 with 185 runs scored in day games this season. They will be hosting the Blue Jays in a three game series at Comerica Park this weekend, with matinees on both Saturday and Sunday. The Blue Jays are the highest scoring team in the majors, so we could see some high scoring games here in Detroit.

Pitching Notes

*Dodgers ace Clayton Kerhsaw hasn't been himself this season, and he's coming off three straight defeats. The southpaw might be able to get back on track at home against the Mets in a nationally televised game on Friday night. The Mets rank dead last in the major leagues in runs scored on the road, and they own a team batting average of .226 away from Citi Field.

*The Yankees will send C.C. Sabathia to the mound in the series finale versus Tampa Bay on Sunday, and the veteran left-hander has really struggled in the Bronx this year. He was rocked for six runs on eight hits over just 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Phillies in his last start at Yankee Stadium. Sabathia is 1-3 with an 8.49 ERA in his six home starts this season. He's also 3-7 with a 5.45 ERA in his last 12 starts versus Tampa.

Hitting Notes

*Prince Fielder has fallen behind Jason Kipnis and Miguel Cabrera in the American League batting race, but the Texas slugger might be able to get back on top after a home series versus the Angels over the weekend. Fielder is batting .402 against the Halos in his career, and he's hitting .362 at home in Texas.

*Steven Matz was 3-for-3 with four RBIs in his major league debut, and we could see the 24 year old back in action on Sunday against the Dodgers. Matz is a left-handed pitcher for the Mets, and he's scheduled to make his second start opposite Mike Bolsinger on Sunday afternoon at Chavez Ravine.

Totals Streak

Detroit Tigers (13-0 O/U): The Tigers have been involved in 13 straight high scoring games, and it has been a combination of hot hitting, poor defense and below average pitching. Hosting the highest scoring team in the major leagues (Toronto) this weekend, it's likely that Detroit's trend of high scoring games will continue.

Injury Notes

*Oakland's ace Sonny Gray was hospitalized with a stomach illness, forcing him to miss his last start against the Rockies. He's scheduled to start Sunday's game against Seattle, but it's still unclear if he will be able to shake off whatever bug has been bothering him in time to face the Mariners.

*The Astros will be without slugger George Springer for at least the next six weeks, as he was hit by a pitch in Wednesday's win over Kansas City, injuring his wrist. The Astros called up Alex Presley from Triple-A Fresno to take Springer's roster spot.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Too Close for Comfort in the AL East
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Teheran playing much better at Turner Field

Julio Teheran looks to remain undefeated at the friendly confines of Turner Field Friday, with the Colombian pitcher posting a 4-0 record in seven starts at home, with the Braves going 5-2 in those games.

Teheran has posted a 2.35 ERA with opposing batters hitting a mere .173 in Atlanta.

The Braves will host the Philadelphia Philles Friday.

Gallardo continues phenomenal pitching Thursday

Yovani Gallardo may be the hottest pitcher in the majors at the moment, with the right-hander tossing his fourth consecutive game without allowing a run Thursday. Those four games have seen the Texas Rangers go 3-1.

Since his June 15 start, Gallardo has pitched 26.1 innings while surrendering 14 hits and no runs.

Gallardo's next projected starts comes Wednesday in the middle of a three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Kazmir leads the Atheltics to another under

Under bettors rejoiced in another cashed ticket thanks to Scott Kazmir, with his Oakland Athletics going 1-6-1 over/under in his past eight contests. This comes courtesy of Kazmir pitching two-hit, no-run ball for eight innings Thursday.

In his past eight starts, Kazmir has now only allowed 11 runs.

Kazmir's next projected start comes Wednesday when the A's visit the New York Yankees.

Red Sox continue to bounce back after losing

The Boston Red Sox continue to be a hard team to develop a streak against, with the team now winning their past seven games following a loss. That trend was extended Thursday when the Bo-Sox beat-up the Blue Jays 12-6, on the back of an eight run first inning.

Those seven games have seen the Sox win by a combined 53-21, which is an average scoring margin of +4.6 runs per game.

Boston takes to the diamond again Friday when they start a three-game set with the Houston Astros at Fenway.

Under cashing when Hammel takes to the mound

The Chicago Cubs have gone under in six of Jason Hammel's past seven starts. Hammel has been posted some solid numbers during those starts with the rightie only allowing 2.6 runs per game.

The Cubs host the Miami Marlins, but the total has yet to be posted.

Team trying to extend longest winning streak of season

The Milwaukee Brewers exploited the hapless Philadelphia Phillies to extend their season-best winning streak to six games.

During the Brew Crew's past five they have averaged 6.6 runs per game, but have also been giving up 4.4 rpg.

Milwaukee is currently -113 when they visit Cincinnati Friday.

Sparks still winless against the spread at home

The Los Angeles Sparks got their first straight-up win of the season Thursday, but it did not help their backers as the team managed to win by five points with a closing spread of -5. Eight games into the season, the Sparks are now 0-3-1 against the spread in LA.

The Sparks are still last in the WNBA in offense with an average of 68.4 points per game.

LA plays next Friday when they host Tulsa.

At the Gate - Friday

July 3, 2015

As expected, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is heading to the Jersey Shore for the $1 million Haskell Invitational (G1) on Aug. 2 according to his owner Ahmed Zayat.

That is not really a surprise as Zayat is from New Jersey and trainer Bob Baffert has had plenty of success in the Haskell, winning it a record seven times including four of the past five years. Baffert saddled last year’s winner Bayern, who went on to win the Breeders Cup Classic (G1), which is the ultimate goal of American Pharoah.

It is possible we could see the Triple Crown winner in the $1 million Travers (G1) at Saratoga four weeks later. However, it seems likely he would wait until a final prep for the Classic in September, possibly the Awesome Again (G1) at Santa Anita or the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont Park where he would take on older foes for the first time.

America Pharoah is currently the 2-1 favorite in early Breeders’ Cup Classic wagering at Sportsbook.ag. Shard Belief is the second choice at 5-2 followed by 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) winner California Chrome at 8-1.

We have a big day of betting action on Saturday including the Stars and Stripes Festival at Belmont Park with six graded stakes. The Belmont Oaks Invitational (G1) and Suburban (G2) will be shown live on NBC at 5:00 ET.

To purchase my Belmont Park Report for Friday click here.

Here is today’s opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $12,500 (3:00 ET)
3 Noble Doss 9-5
4 Flash Paws 2-1
5 Groomedforvictory 4-1
6 Moneyinyour Pocket 6-1

Analysis: Noble Doss stalked the early pace, made a good middle move and looked like a winner but was nailed late and had to settle for the runner up spot in his first go off a nine-month layoff. The gelding has landed in the exacta in 4 of 6 trips over the main track here. He figures to be tighter second off the bench for the Rice barn.

Flash Paws beat $14,000 non-winners of three in his first trip over the main track. He was making his third start off the claim by the Nevin barn. He steps into open company but looks up to the task.

Wagering
WIN: #3 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 3,4 / 3,4,5,6
TRI: 3,4 / 34,5,6 / 2,3,4,5,6

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 8 The Perfect Sting (6:37 ET)
6 Zindaya 5-1
2 Daring Kathy 3-1
8 Marbre Rose 7-2
9 Emotional Kitten 4-1

Analysis: Zindaya was a sharp winner last out in the Intercontinental going seven furlongs over good ground and goes a mile here for just the second time in her career. She set the early fractions and weakened to finish third in the Autumn Miss (G3) last fall in her lone go at the distance. She is perfect in three trips over the turf here for the Clement barn that is 29% winners moving runners from sprint to route.

Daring Kathy makes her first start since last November where she won the My Charmer Handicap (G3) at Gulfstream Park West going nine furlongs. She has won 5 of 7 on grass in her career and makes her first start here for the Chad Brown barn that is 28% winners with newcomers to the barn and 28% winners with runners coming back off a +180 day layoff.

Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 7-2 or better.
EX: 2,6 / 2,6,8,9
TRI: 2,6 / 2,6,8,9 / 2,4,6,8,9

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park
R3: #1 Tug of War 8-1
R4: #9 Northern Eclipse 8-1
R4: #4 The Ghost Bride 8-1
R6: #7 Devilish Grin 10-1

Giants, Nationals hook up

July 3, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (42-38) at WASHINGTON NATIONALS (43-35)

First pitch: Friday, 6:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Washington -145, San Francisco +135, Total: 7.5

In a matchup of two of the best teams in the National League, the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals will start a three-game set on Friday night.

The Giants have been one of the perennial playoff teams in the past few years, but they have shown some inconsistencies in 2015 and sit behind the Dodgers in the NL West after losing four of the last six games. Things really went south when they were in Miami to begin the week, losing all three of the contests by two runs or less while being outscored 16-12. The sweep ended on Thursday in a 5-4 game where they were just 1-for-6 with RISP and collectively struck out 12 times. With five multi-hit performances in the last seven games, 2B Joe Panik (.316) has been on a tear and in that time is 13-for-30 (.433) with five runs scored.

The Nationals have been able to grab the lead in the NL East as they are 9-3 in their last 12 games. They did not do well in the final four games of their recent road trip, though, losing 3-of-4 contests against the Phillies and Braves. Washington failed to get a victory in the rubber-match on Thursday against Atlanta, losing a close one by a score of 2-1 as they put up just five hits and was defeated on a walk-off hit. OF Bryce Harper (.339) has not been on the torrid pace that he was on earlier in the season, but is riding a five-game hitting streak in which he is 7-for-21 (.333) with four doubles.

A few veterans will be hitting the mound in this matchup with RHP Jake Peavy (0-2, 9.39 ERA) going up against LHP Gio Gonzalez (5-4, 4.41 ERA) of the host Nationals. With Thursday’s road loss, San Francisco is now 21-18 when away from home and will be taking on this Washington group which is 22-14 in the nation’s capitol. The two clubs have faced off 17 times since the start of the 2013 campaign with the Nationals holding a slight 9-8 edge as the teams have split their eight games in Washington.

Trends show that the Giants are an incredible 20-10 (.667) as an underdog of +100 to +150 this year while Peavy’s teams have gone a mere 14-24 (.368) in his starts since the beginning of last season. The injury report has OF Hunter Pence (Wrist) and 2B Marco Scutaro (Back) on the DL as the Nationals are without 2B Anthony Rendon (Quad), 1B Ryan Zimmerman (Foot) and OF Jayson Werth (Wrist).

Peavy made just two starts at the beginning of the year before hitting the DL with a back injury and he did not do well in that time as he failed to get more than four innings in and gave up four runs in each loss. Although he is not as dominant as he once was, the injury-prone veteran put together a nice campaign in 2014 as a member of the Red Sox and Giants, posting a 3.73 ERA with his lowest career strikeout rate (7.0 K/9). He has struggled in recent years with homers, though, with more than a long ball per nine innings in each season since 2012. In his career against the Nationals, Peavy is 4-5 (6-6 team record) with a 3.79 ERA (1.25 WHIP) and was tremendous (5.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K) in a winning effort last year.

The only player with any real success against the righty is OF Denard Span who is 7-for-20 with five doubles in the matchup while SS Yunel Escobar is a meager 1-for-14 in his time against him. The bullpen for San Francisco has gone 8-8 with a 3.56 ERA (1.23 WHIP) and are 22-for-27 (81%) in save chances. Santiago Casilla (3.03 ERA, 20 saves) was blown up for three runs without getting an out in a blown save an loss in his last outing and manager Bruce Bochy stated he will not be used for a few days.

At one time, Gonzalez was one of the most dominant lefties in the game, but he has seen his ERA rise in each of the past four seasons and is currently on pace for his worst year since his sophomore campaign (2009). He still has been able to keep the ball in the park (0.33 HR/9), but has seen his strikeout rate drop to 7.9 K/9 and is walking 3.6 batters per nine innings. He has also ran into some poor luck in 2015 with batters hitting .354 BABIP as he is leaving just 69.8% of runners on base. Gonzalez has been solid against this opponent in his career, going 2-2 (4-4 team record) with a 2.36 ERA (1.31 WHIP) and has pitched a total of only eight innings in his last two outings against them despite allowing just two runs (0 ER) on eight hits.

Both OF Justin Maxwell (4-for-8, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and SS Brandon Crawford (2-for-6, 1 HR, 2 RBI) have hit the lefty hard as 1B Buster Posey (3-for-14) has really struggled in the matchup. The relievers for Washington have gone 10-9 with a 3.42 ERA (1.27 WHIP) and have been successful in 24-of-35 (71%) saves. Drew Storen (2.10 ERA, 23 saves) has just two blown saves on the year but has allowed five runs in his past eight appearances.
