Game of the Day: Braves at Nationals
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals (-180, 7)

Stephen Strasburg has spent the past six weeks re-establishing himself as one of the National League’s top pitchers, and the Washington Nationals’ right-hander looks for his fourth consecutive victory Wednesday as the NL East leaders host the Atlanta Braves. Strasburg has allowed one or zero runs in six of his past eight outings, helping propel Washington’s second-half surge. The Nationals have taken the first two games of the series from Atlanta and lead the Braves by nine games in the East.

Atlanta’s hopes of repeating as division champions have all but evaporated, as the Braves have dropped seven of 10 and sit 1 ½ games behind Pittsburgh for the NL's second wild card. Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman has three homers in 22 career at-bats against Strasburg, and is 29-for-59 against Washington pitching this season. Justin Upton hit a two-run blast in Tuesday’s 6-4 loss, his first homer and first two RBIs this month after blasting seven homers with 28 RBIs in August.

LINE HISTORY:
Online book SportsInteraction opened the Nats as -210 faves, but are now -195. The total has held at 7.

Harang gave the Braves an outstanding first four months, but has struggled mightily since mid-August while going 1-4 with a 6.91 ERA and a .350 opponents batting average in his past five stars. The 36-year-old lasted just 3 2/3 innings Friday at Miami, giving up six runs on 10 hits. Harang, who gave up one run on seven hits over seven innings against Washington on Aug. 9, is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts against the Nationals in 2014.

Strasburg gave up seven runs in five innings to the Braves on Aug. 8 and five runs to San Francisco in four innings on Aug. 24, but has allowed only four earned runs in the other 42 2/3 innings pitched since July 29. He got a no-decision Friday against Philadelphia despite giving up one run on four hits in six innings, and sports a 0.92 WHIP in his past eight outings. The Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers (-115) do battle for first place in the AL Central and the pitchers could have the advantage with some weather on tap for Wednesday's showdown.

There is an 85 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms expected in the area. There will also be a strong 19 mile per hour wind blowing in from center field during the game.

With the strong wind blowing in, teams are 4-2 over/under in this scenario. The total for the game is currently at 7.5.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet

September 10, 2014

Royals at Tigers – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
KC: Shields (13-7, 3.23 ERA)
DET: Porcello (15-10, 3.30 ERA)

Series recap: The Tigers have re-taken the lead in the AL Central after grabbing the first two games against the Royals. Detroit held off Kansas City in Monday’s opener, 9-5, followed by a 4-2 triumph last night as -165 favorites. If the Tigers win tonight, it will be the third time this season that Detroit will have swept Kansas City.

What to watch for: These teams hook up for one more series at Kaufmann Stadium later this month which could decide the division title. The Tigers are 2-5 in Rick Porcello’s last seven starts, as the right-hander has allowed 21 hits and 12 runs in his past two outings. The Royals have won 13 of Shields’ 17 road starts this season, including five of the past six in the underdog role. However, Shields has failed to beat the Tigers in three outings this season.

Rays at Yankees – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
TB: Odorizzi (10-11, 3.84 ERA)
NYY: Capuano (2-3, 4.46 ERA)

Series recap: The Rays held off the Yankees, 4-3 to cash as +120 underdogs, as neither team scored in the final four innings. New York trailed Tampa Bay, 4-1 before scoring a pair of runs in the fifth inning as the Yankees were ready to bust things open with no outs. However, Stephen Drew was nailed at the plate on a base hit then Derek Jeter lined into a double-play to kill the rally.

What to watch for: The Yankees have won each of Chris Capuano’s last three starts, as two of those victories came via a walk-off homer against the White Sox and Red Sox. Jake Odorizzi hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts for the Rays, while Tampa Bay is 4-1 in his past five outings away from Tropicana Field. The Rays have struggled in Game 2’s of a road series recently, losing four of their previous five in this situation.

Cardinals at Reds – 7:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
STL: Lackey (2-2, 4.87 ERA)
CIN: Simon (13-10, 3.52 ERA)

Series recap: These two NL Central rivals have split the first two games, as the Cardinals cruised in Monday’s opener, 5-0. Cincinnati rebounded with a 9-5 triumph last night as short home ‘dogs, as the Reds built a 7-1 lead before holding off the Cardinals late. With Tuesday’s victory, the Reds improved to 3-8 in their past 11 games.

What to watch for: What a difference a few months makes, as the Reds owned a 15-3 record in Alfredo Simon’s first 18 starts of the season. Since the All-Star break, Cincinnati has limped to a 1-9 mark in Simon’s past 10 trips to the mound, which includes a 1-4 record at the Great American Ballpark. The Cardinals have won five of their past seven Game 3’s of a road series, while posting a 7-3 record against Cincinnati in the last 10 matchups.

Marlins at Brewers – 8:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
MIA: Cosart (4-1, 1.99 ERA)
MIL: Peralta (15-10, 3.84 ERA)

Series recap: The meltdown is nearly complete for the Brewers, who dropped their 13th game in their past 14 tries in last night’s 6-3 defeat to the Marlins as -135 home favorites. Milwaukee led the NL Central in August, but the Brewers may not even make the playoffs if they don’t start winning, as Milwaukee is currently 1-5 on its homestand.

What to watch for: The Marlins are making a surge at one of the Wild Card spots in the National League, as Miami owns a 4-1 record in the past five games to creep one game below the .500 mark. Jarred Cosart has turned into the best pickup at the trade deadline, as the Marlins are 5-0 in his past five starts, including impressive road underdog wins over the Braves and Angels. Wily Peralta is winless in his last three outings for the Brewers, as the right-hander has allowed 17 runs to the Cardinals, Giants, and Pirates, all teams that could head to the playoffs.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Over last decade, Patriots are 25-9 vs spread in game following a loss.

-- Colorado Rockies are now 7-33 in games played east of Denver.

-- You don’t think time flies? NBA training camps open in 20 days; the first NHL preseason game is in ten days.

-- There are 17 former ACC quarterbacks on NFL rosters, 14 from the SEC, 13 from the Pac-12.

-- Congrats to Jose Altuve on his 200th hit. There is no metric that measures the size of someone's heart.

-- Monday night in San Francisco, Giants' 2B Joe Panik became first player with five hits in a game, but no RBI or run scored, since 2009 (Adam Kennedy, A's).

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) It is not easy getting tee times in the New York area on Labor Day weekend; this from CBSSports.com:

“The Trump National Golf Club, the Winged Foot and Willow Ridge were among some of the elite courses that rebuffed the president's request to tee off there, according to several sources who were told about the president's advance team's calls to the club managers. Club managers apparently did not want to inconvenience their high-powered and high-paying members over Labor Day weekend by shutting down their courses to accommodate the president."

President Obama couldn’t get a tee time on Long Island Labor Day weekend. He’s the most powerful man in the world. Yikes.

12) Drew Smyly has pitched really well for the Rays since coming over from Detroit, but he’s at 153 IP for this year, 27 over his previous career high, so Tampa Bay, which isn’t contending, shut Smyly down for the season.

One big indicator for injuries to pitchers is when a guy exceeds his career high by more than 20%, which is why you see lot of younger pitchers getting shut down or pushed back between starts.

11) After only one week, there are only entrants 1,644 alive in Station's Last Man Standing pro football contest out in Las Vegas. 4,064 entered. Winning prize is $94,025. Losing more than half the entrants in a week isn't normal.

10) USC is already playing 11 true freshman on its football team, an awful lot, but they’re 20 players short of the scholarship limit, so they lack talented depth.

9) Speaking of USC, AD/alum/former NFL QB Pat Haden was very emotional on the sidelines when the Trojans won at Stanford Saturday. If Haden had shown 10% of that emotion when he was playing QB for very good Rams’ teams in the 70’s, maybe he would’ve won a Super Bowl. Instead, the educated idiot went to law school while he was playing, compromising his performance (he admitted as much on Roy Firestone’s TV show after he retired).

8) Those Ram teams got to one Super Bowl, after the ’79 season, when Haden broke his finger in a game at Seattle, and Vince Ferragamo led the team to its NFC title. Rams led that great Pittsburgh team in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl, but lost 31-19.

7) Football announcers are fond of describing an all-out pass rush by saying “…they really pinned their ears back”. This makes no sense to me; where did it come from? Why does every analyst say it? Why would someone put a pin on their ears? Sometimes unusual things bother me……

6) Ravens’ owner Steve Bisciotti said the team’s leadership “voted unanimously” to cut Ray Rice. Uh-huh; wonder if anyone suggested they call the league and make sure no other team could pick Rice up after they cut him? It’s a fair question and something they needed to cover themselves on; they wouldn’t want to cut him and then wind up playing against him.

5) A lawyer in New Jersey said Wednesday night that Rice would've been charged with third degree assault from the videotape evidence, even without his wife's cooperation. This has become a ridiculous mess; charge the guy with assault, throw him out of the NFL for a year and everyone moves on with their lives.

4) Kentucky will have nine (9!!!) McDonald’s All-Americans on its hoop team this fall. Hard to keep nine guys happy, especially if they all think they should be starting. Is there such a thing as too much talent?

3) There was a story around the Oregon waited a while to dismiss three basketball players who were accused of sexual assault because firing them right away would’ve hurt their APR score, which would’ve risked making the Ducks ineligible for postseason, as well as costing the coach and AD bonuses for keeping their APR score at a certain level.

While it may be a little shady, it is also smart management; its not illegal, maybe a tad unethical, but who amongst us wouldn’t do the same thing?

2) Talked about this earlier in the week, but the Bengals put a guy on their practice squad that they had earlier cut, just so he could maintain his health insurance to care for his 4-year old daughter, who has cancer. They didn’t have to do this, but they did and it is both classy and touching.

1) Arnold Palmer turned 85 yesterday; one of the truly legendary Americans, maybe a better businessman than he was a golfer. Happy birthday, sir.
