CHICAGO CUBS (39-16) at PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (28-29)

First pitch: Monday, 7:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Chicago -260, Philadelphia +220, Total: 8.0

Jon Lester and the league-best Cubs kick off a three-game series against Adam Morgan and the Phillies in a battle of lefties at Citizens Bank Park.

The Cubs (39-16) had their four-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with a 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks. Still, the best team in baseball holds a comfortable 9 ½-game lead over the second-place Pirates in the National League Central.

LHP Jon Lester (6-3, 2.29 ERA, 69 SO, 17 BB, 7 HR in 70 2/3 IP) will take the hill for Chicago as it begins a nine-game road trip in Philadelphia. Lester is coming off the best start of his season, a complete-game masterpiece against the Dodgers in which he allowed one run on four hits and recorded 10 strikeouts to no walks.

On the mound for the fourth-place Phillies (28-29) will be LHP Adam Morgan (1-4, 7.07 ERA, 24 SO, 10 BB, 7 HR in 35 2/3 IP). Morgan has really struggled of late, allowing 21 earned runs in his last 19 2/3 innings of work. The Phillies had lost seven in a row before finally beating the Brewers on Friday, and then again on Sunday.

The Cubs hosted the Phillies at Wrigley Field from May 27-29 and swept them, outscoring Philadelphia 17-5. Chicago has played great on the road this season, posting a 17-8 mark. The Phillies have gone 15-14 in their home park.

Joe Maddon’s squad just keeps on rolling. The Cubs are second in the National League in runs (297) and first in ERA (2.57), a lethal combination. Dominant pitching and an imposing lineup have the Cubs playing .709 ball. Chicago’s best hitter in 2016 has been 2B Ben Zobrist (.326, 7 HR, 35 RBI, .438 OBP), who has shined in his first season with the club.

CF Dexter Fowler (.303, 7 HR, 25 RBI, .421 OBP) has been a consistent spark out of the leadoff spot and 3B Kris Bryant (.274, 13 HR, 40 RBI, .358 OBP) and 1B Anthony Rizzo (.251, 13 HR, 40 RBI, .390 OBP) lead the club with 13 dingers. Bryant, backup C David Ross (.238, 4 HR, 17 RBI, .340 OBP) and LF Jorge Soler (.211, 5 HR, 13 RBI, .313 OBP) have all homered off Morgan, and the Cubs’ roster as a whole has gone 15-for-36 (.417) against him. The 26-year-old faced the Cubs on May 27 and was lit up for six earned runs on eight hits in just four innings. Lester has dominated the Phillies in his career, going 5-0 with a 1.71 ERA.

The Phillies have had problems scoring runs all season. They’re second-to-last in the National League in runs (184), tied for 13th in homers (48), 13th in average (.233) and last in on-base percentage (.289). The brightest spot in Pete Mackanin’s lineup has been CF Odubel Herrera (.317, 5 HR, 17 RBI, .426 OBP, 7 SB).

3B Maikel Franco (.250, 10 HR, 31 RBI, .299 OBP) leads the club in homers, while 1B Ryan Howard (.151, 8 HR, 19 RBI, .211 OBP)—once one of the most feared sluggers in baseball—has been relegated to the bench in favor of 1B Tommy Joseph (.298, 4 HR, 7 RBI, .300 OBP). The Phils haven’t had much success against Lester. Howard is 2-for-11 against him with six strikeouts and backup C Carlos Ruiz (.226, 3 HR, 7 RBI, .301 OBP) is 0-for-14 with four strikeouts.

SS Freddy Galvis has gone 3-for-11 with a homer against the three-time All-Star and backup OF Peter Bourjos is 5-for-13 against Lester with a double. Lester beat the Phillies on May 27, allowing one earned run on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Nobody pulling away yet in AL Central
June 6, 2016

DETROIT (AP) At this time last year, the Chicago White Sox were 6 1/2 games out of first place in the AL Central.

So although Chicago has played poorly of late, the White Sox are still in a better position than they were in 2015. Their own outlook is more promising - and it looks like there may not be a dominant team in their division like there was last year.

Cleveland has won five in a row and leads the Central at 31-24 - which is the worst record of any division leader at the moment. Only 3 1/2 games separate the Indians from fourth-place Detroit, with Kansas City and Chicago in between.

''I think all four teams to this point of the season have played really, really good baseball at one point, and at times they've played really, really bad baseball,'' White Sox catcher Alex Avila said. ''My best guess throughout the course of the season is that everybody will be within a few games of each other and whatever team will kind of find that consistency toward the end of the season will be the one that comes out of it.''

Kansas City won the division by 12 games last year en route to a World Series title. Teams like the Tigers were left essentially playing for a wild card - and Detroit actually became a seller at the trade deadline.

Now the Royals are dealing with injuries to Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas. If the top four teams in the division are able to stay within striking distance of each other for a while, they all may want to add talent at the deadline, sensing opportunity.

The White Sox have lost 18 of their last 24 but are still only three games out of first place. On Saturday, they added James Shields to their starting rotation in a trade, leaving no doubt about how they feel about their chances to contend for a postseason spot.

''He's proven that he can pitch deep into games and give you quality innings and quality starts, and that's very, very important over the course of the season,'' Avila said.

Here are a few other developments from around baseball:

BEYOND THEIR YEARS

When a big-market team with lots of money starts developing young, cost-controlled standouts, that's a scary thought for the rest of baseball. It's happened in the National League with the Chicago Cubs, and now the Boston Red Sox appear to have a promising future in the AL. Boston is nine games over .500 and has gotten impressive contributions from Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts, neither of whom turns 24 until October.

UNPREDICTABLE

Jeanmar Gomez (18), Alex Colome (15), Jeremy Jeffress (15) and Jake McGee (14) all have more saves so far than Craig Kimbrel (13) and Trevor Rosenthal (10).

FANTASY FOCUS

Jordan Zimmermann's fantasy stats have been outstanding so far, but a word of caution about the Detroit right-hander: He's averaging a career-low 5.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

LINE OF THE WEEK

Betts' three-homer game against Baltimore on Tuesday lifted the Red Sox to a 6-2 victory. He followed that up with two more home runs the next day - although in that game Wednesday, the Orioles managed to win 13-9 despite being outhomered 5-0.

Then in the series finale Thursday, Baltimore went deep seven times in a 12-7 victory.

So while Betts had the memorable individual performance, the Orioles were able to salvage a split of that four-game series.

Giants' Pence set for hamstring surgery
June 5, 2016

ST. LOUIS (AP) San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence will undergo surgery Thursday for a torn right hamstring and is likely to be sidelined eight weeks.

The operation will be done in Dallas by Cowboys head physician Dr. Daniel Cooper.

The NL West leaders don't anticipate making a deal for now, with Jarrett Parker and Mac Williamson likely to get playing time in right field. Parker started all three games of a weekend series against the Cardinals.

The 33-year-old Pence is batting .298 with seven home runs and a team-leading 36 RBIs. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list after feeling the right hamstring pop running to first on Wednesday.

Earlier in the weekend, Pence was told he had a 50-50 chance of returning if he skipped surgery and just did rehabilitation work. But if he did that and re-injured himself, the recovery time would be longer

Cardinals demote Wong to make room for Peralta
June 6, 2016

ST. LOUIS (AP) The St. Louis Cardinals optioned second baseman Kolten Wong to Triple-A Memphis to open a spot for infielder Jhonny Peralta, set to come off the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Wong is batting .222 in 49 games with 35 starts. He signed a five year, $25 million contract extension this spring but has been the odd man out much of this season. Matt Carpenter is moving to second base and Peralta will be the primary third baseman, making room for Cuban rookie shortstop Aledmys Diaz.

Wong was a first-round draft pick in 2011. He batted .262 with 11 homers and 61 RBIs last season and had advocated for the leadoff spot this season, but has just one homer and five RBIs this year.

Peralta had surgery to repair ligament damage to his left thumb in March.

LEADING OFF: Longoria on HR binge, Astros try again vs Texas
June 6, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

HOMER HAPPY

Tampa Bay star Evan Longoria homered in all four games of a weekend series at Minnesota, connecting twice on Sunday. He'll try to keep up his longball barrage when the Rays visit Arizona.

LONE STAR LOSSES

The Astros are 0-6 vs. Texas this season and have dropped 14 of the last 16 against their in-state rivals. Houston tries to break the skid when Mike Fiers opens a four-game set on the road against Rangers righty Colby Lewis.

BACK AGAIN

Neil Walker plays at PNC Park for the first time since the Pirates traded him to the Mets last December. Born in Pittsburgh, the second baseman spent his first seven seasons in the majors with the team. Jonathon Niese starts for the Buccos - he was dealt away by New York to get Walker.

PERFECT START?

The Cubs begin a nine-game trip at Philadelphia, owning the best record in the majors at 39-16. Jon Lester pitches for Chicago and is 5-0 with a 1.71 ERA in seven career starts vs. the Phillies.

ROLLING ROOKIE

Tigers righty Michael Fulmer is 5-1 with a 3.24 ERA in his first season in the majors. Acquired last July in the trade that sent Yoenis Cespedes to the Mets, the 23-year-old Fulmer tries to extend his impressive start when he faces the visiting Blue Jays.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

From MSN.com, six things I didn't know about M&M's..........

-- M&M stands for Mars and Murrie, the partners who invented the candy.

-- M&M's were invented in 1941, but the public couldn't buy them until 1947.

-- During World War II, M&M's were sold exclusively to the US military as part of their food rations.

-- M&M's originally came in five colors: red, orange, yellow, green and violet.

-- The "M" didn't appear on the candy until 1950; it was a black "M" until 1954, when it was changed to white.

-- Red M&M’s disappeared for a decade from 1976 because a Russian study linked red food dye to cancer in humans. An undergrad at the University of Tennessee is responsible for that being found false, which brought the red M&M's back in '87.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) You don't think professional golf is hugely competitive? A freshman golfer at LSU qualified for US Open Monday. Kid named Sam Burns was one of two golfers out of six in a playoff to grab the last two spots at the Memphis qualifier. So a kid who was in high school last year qualified for the US Open- lot of good players.

12) Good news and bad news for Packer fans in Wisconsin: Aaron Rodgers has given up dairy products and is at his lightest weight since 2007, which is the good news.

Bad news is that Wisconsin is the Dairy State, where people wear plastic hats that looks like hunks of cheese. If giving up dairy products is good for you......

11) Leaders amongst starting pitchers in strikeouts per nine innings:
Jose Fernandez 13.3, Noah Syndergaard 11.5, Steven Strasburg 11.4

10) Ole Miss Rebels will be playing home football games on grass this season, for the first time since 2002.

9) Draymond Green was drafted 35th in the 2012 NBA Draft; he can recite (in order) all 34 guys taken ahead of him, not that he took it personally or anything.

8) Rumors during the day Monday had the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes (once the Hartford Whalers) moving to Las Vegas, which would put expansion on hold.

7) Sounds like Arizona basketball commit Terrance Ferguson will skip college and go play overseas next season- he'l sign an endorsement deal with Under Armour and be eligible for the 2017 NBA Draft. Ferguson is a shooting guard.

6) Mets' OF Juan Lagares has a partially torn ligament in his left thumb but didn't go on the DL, which seems odd. He hurt the thumb making a diving catch Saturday.

5) Mets' 2B Neil Walker was so popular in Pittsburgh that all the stadium workers gathered and gave Walker a huge ovation when he came out for batting practice before Monday's game, which wound up getting rained out. It was Walker's first game back in Pittsburgh since he was traded to New York last winter.

4) Steph Curry is out of the Olympics this summer, a smart move. Been couple long years in a row for Curry, that on top of health concerns in South America. LaMarcus Aldridge will also miss the Olympics with a hand injury.

3) Colorado pitcher Tyler Chatwood on road this year: 5-0, 0.65 ERA, 0.84 WHIP. Too bad he has to make half his starts at high altitude at Coors Field. .

2) Pittsburgh 3, San Jose 1-- Penguins lead series 3-1, are one win away from their fourth Stanley Cup championship.

1) If you get shot in the leg at a nightclub, and your story is "I was too drunk to remember what happened" you might have a deeper problem than an injured leg. I'm just saying.........Aqib Talib is the same guy who once grabbed a gun from his mother to shoot at his sister's boyfriend. Oy.

NEW YORK METS at PITTSBURGH PIRATES

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:40 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: New York -127, Pittsburgh +117, Total: 7.5

Jacob deGrom and the Mets take on Juan Nicasio and the Pirates at PNC Park in the second game of a doubleheader.

Monday’s Mets-Pirates series opener was postponed due to rain, so the two clubs will kick off their three-game series with a traditional doubleheader on Tuesday. Game 1 is at 4:05 p.m., and Game 2 is scheduled for 7:40 p.m.

On the mound for the Mets in the second game will be RHP Jacob deGrom (3-1 2.62 ERA, 47 SO, 16 BB, 4 HR in 55 IP). The All-Star and former Rookie of the Year is coming off consecutive seven-inning, one-run outings, and his 10 strikeouts in his last start against the White Sox were a season high. In nine starts this season, deGrom has only allowed more than two earned runs three times.

He’ll be opposed by Pirates RHP Juan Nicasio (4-4, 4.75 ERA, 51 SO, 21 BB, 8 HR in 53 IP). The 29-year-old has allowed at least three earned runs in seven of his 10 starts this season. The Pirates have owned the Mets in recent years. Coming into Tuesday, Pittsburgh has gone 10-3 against New York since 2014, including a 6-1 mark at PNC Park. The Mets have gone 16-12 away from Citi Field, and the Pirates are 16-11 at home (entering play on Tuesday).

The Mets have been bit hard by the injury bug of late, as 3B David Wright, 1B Lucas Duda and C Travis d’Arnaud are all on the disabled list. LF Yoenis Cespedes was scratched from the lineup this past Saturday, but he pinch-hit on Sunday and was in Terry Collins’ lineup on Monday before the game was postponed.

2B Neil Walker, returning to Pittsburgh for the first time since being traded by the Pirates in the offseason, has gone 3-for-10 against Nicasio with a double and a triple. 1B James Loney, who was recently acquired by general manager Sandy Alderson to fill in for Duda, is 2-for-11 against him with a double.

SS Asdrubal Cabrera is 2-for-6 with a homer against the former Rockies hurler, and C Rene Rivera—playing in d’Arnaud’s absence—is 2-for-4 against him with a homer and a double. RF Curtis Granderson is 1-for-7 against Nicasio and CF Juan Lagares is 2-for-5 against him with a double and a triple. Nicasio hasn’t started against the Mets since 2014, though he did face them out of the bullpen with the Dodgers last season. In two career starts against the Mets, Nicasio is 2-0 with an ERA of 3.00 and a WHIP of 1.000. DeGrom is 1-1 with a 3.37 ERA on the road this season.

The Pirates haven’t seen much of deGrom. Only three players on Clint Hurdle’s roster—2B Josh Harrison, CF Andrew McCutchen and SS Jordy Mercer—have as many as five at-bats again him. Harrison is 0-for-5 against deGrom with three strikeouts, McCutchen is 3-for-5 with a walk and Mercer is 1-for-5 with two RBIs.

DeGrom has pitched brilliantly in his two career starts against the Pirates, posting a 1.35 ERA and a 1.349 WHIP, but he didn’t factor in either of those decisions. In May of 2014, deGrom tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Pirates, and a month later he allowed two runs against them in 6 2/3 frames. The Pirates won both of those games. Nicasio has struggled on the road this season, but he’s pitched very well at home, going 4-1 with a 2.54 ERA at PNC Park.

Hottest team: Indians (6-0 last six)
Since dropping a pair of games as a heavy home favorite against the Rangers last week, the Indians have caught fire. Cleveland avoided a sweep against Texas with a walk-off victory in extra-innings, followed by a four-game home sweep against the defending World Champion Royals.

The Tribe continued its winning ways on the west coast on Monday by beating the slumping Mariners, 3-1 for their sixth straight victory to grab a 2 ½-game lead over the Royals in the AL Central race. During this hot streak, Cleveland’s pitching has stepped up by allowing three runs in the last four games. Cody Anderson makes the start for the Tribe tonight against the Mariners, looking to improve on his 1-3 record and ERA of 6.81.

Coldest team: White Sox (2-8 last 10)
Chicago returns home following a 2-7 road trip, capped off by getting swept at Detroit this past weekend. The task doesn’t get easier for the Sox, who host the NL East-leading Nationals at U.S. Cellular Field tonight. Chicago’s pitching gave up 22 runs in the three losses to Detroit, while allowing at least five runs in six of the nine games on the trip. The Sox haven’t been much better at home, losing seven of the last 10 contests on the South Side, while posting a 1-5 record in their past six series openers overall. Mat Latos takes the mound for Chicago, as the veteran right-hander is 6-1 on the season in spite of allowing 25 earned runs in his last six starts.

Hottest pitcher: Aaron Sanchez, Blue Jays (5-1, 2.99 ERA)
Following Detroit’s 11-0 pounding of Toronto last night, the Blue Jays look to slow down the red-hot Tigers’ bats behind Sanchez. The Toronto right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.99 after tossing 6.2 scoreless innings in a 7-0 victory over the Yankees last Wednesday for his first home win of the season. Sanchez’s numbers away from Rogers Center are impressive, boasting a 4-0 record and 2.38 ERA on the highway. The Jays have won three of Sanchez’s last four starts in the role of a road favorite, as Toronto is a -130 favorite at Detroit tonight.

Coldest pitcher: Ubaldo Jimenez, Orioles (2-6, 6.59 ERA)
The Royals have lost five straight games, but the cure to their ills may come in the face of Jimenez. The Baltimore veteran allowed five earned runs for the fifth consecutive time in his past start against the Red Sox, but the Orioles’ offense bailed him out in a 12-7 victory. In spite of owning an ERA of 6.00 at Camden Yards this season, the Orioles are 5-2 in Jimenez’s seven home starts. Jimenez faces a Kansas City squad that has plated three runs in the last four games, but lit up the right-hander for 10 hits and seven runs in an 8-3 blowout last August.

Biggest UNDER run:
Dodgers (7-2 last nine)
Los Angeles was held to one hit in Monday’s 6-1 loss to Colorado, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Dodgers have allowed six runs in consecutive games, but five times during this stretch Los Angeles has played in contests decided by four runs or more. Seven times in the last nine games, the Dodgers have scored four runs or less, while six of the past eight games played at Dodger Stadium have finished ‘under’ the total. The Dodgers send out 19-year old Julio Urias to make his third start, but the southpaw has been knocked around in his first two starts by allowing nine runs in 7.2 innings, resulting in two ‘overs.’

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (5-1 last six)
Philadelphia closed out May with five consecutive ‘unders,’ but the Phillies have switched gears in the totals department by going 5-1 to the ‘over’ in June. The Phillies have been involved several high-scoring games of late, combining for nine runs or more in four straight contests, including 10 in Monday’s 6-4 loss to the Cubs. That number may turn around tonight as Jerad Eickhoff takes the mound for Philadelphia, as the Phillies are 8-3 to the ‘under’ in his 11 starts this season, including an ‘under’ against the Cubs at Wrigley Field in late May.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Giants
San Francisco returns home following a 5-5 road swing to begin a quick two-game series with Boston. The Red Sox fell out of first place last night in spite of not playing, as Baltimore pulled into first by a half-game after beating Kansas City. Rick Porcello takes the mound for Boston tonight, as the right-hander has been involved in a pair of high-scoring losses on the road in his last two outings. Porcello began the season at 5-0, but the Red Sox are 2-4 in his last six starts, while allowing 14 earned runs in his last three road outings. The Giants are 6-1 in their past seven home contests, as Albert Suarez makes his second career start for San Francisco.

Betcha didn’t know: The battle of the Lone Star State has been one-sided this season as Texas owns a perfect 7-0 record against Houston after walking-off past the Astros on Monday. The Rangers look to keep up that unblemished mark tonight in a duel of southpaw aces with Cole Hamels and Dallas Keuchel taking the mound in Arlington. Hamels struck out 11 in eight innings the last time he faced the Astros in late May in a 9-2 victory, but Texas is 1-3 in his past four outings. Keuchel has been racked in two starts against Texas this season, allowing 22 hits and 13 earned runs in a pair of blowout losses.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-215) at Phillies

Biggest public underdog: Royals (+110) at Orioles

Biggest line move: Astros (+100 to -110) at Rangers

LEADING OFF: Cards shuffle infield, Hamels vs Keuchel redux
June 7, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

SHUFFLING THE CARDS

Three-time All-Star Jhonny Peralta makes his season debut for St. Louis after injuring his thumb in spring training - but he'll do it at third base because of the emergence of rookie Aledmys Diaz at shortstop. Diaz has become a leading Rookie of the Year candidate with a .328 batting average, eight homers and 38 RBIs. The Cardinals demoted second baseman Kolten Wong to make room for Peralta and will slide Matt Carpenter from third base to second against Cincinnati.

TAKE 2

Top left-handers Cole Hamels and Dallas Keuchel share the mound for the second time in just more than two weeks, this time at Texas instead of Houston. Hamels (5-1, 3.39 ERA) allowed one earned run over eight innings in a 9-2 victory against the Astros on May 22, while Keuchel (3-7, 5.50) gave up seven runs in six innings. Hamels is six shy of 2,000 career strikeouts.

TIMMY TIME

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum makes his second start for Triple-A Salt Lake. The 31-year-old righty signed with the Los Angeles Angels last month and is coming back from hip surgery last September. Lincecum gave up three runs and three hits in five innings last week. The former Giants star pitches at Reno, a Diamondbacks affiliate.

THIRD TIME A CHARM?

Teenage prospect Julio Urias (0-1, 9.39 ERA) gets his third shot at big league hitters when the Dodgers host Colorado. The 19-year-old lefty struggled in his first two starts, allowing three homers and six runs over five innings in a loss to the Cubs last time out. Urias did not give up three homers in any of his 63 minor league starts.

TIES THAT BIND

Rained out Monday night, the Mets and Pirates play a single-admission doubleheader beginning at 4:05 p.m. In a matchup of 2015 NL playoff teams, rookie Steven Matz (7-1) and right-hander Jacob deGrom (3-1) are scheduled to pitch for New York. Pittsburgh has ex-Met Jon Niese (5-2) and fellow lefty Francisco Liriano (4-5) lined up. Niese was traded to the Pirates in December for second baseman Neil Walker, who is returning to play in his Pittsburgh hometown for the first time since the deal. The Pirates won all six meetings between the clubs last season.
