Rays, Archer reach agreement on six-year deal

Second-year starting pitcher Chris Archer and the Tampa Bay Rays agreed to a six-year contract worth $25.5 million that includes team options to tie Archer through the team through 2021.

Archer, who starts his first game of the season and 28th of his career Thursday, was acquired in 2011 in a trade with the Chicago Cubs that shipped Matt Garza out of Tampa.

He finished third Rookie of the Year voting last season behind teammate Wil Myers. Archer was 9-7 with a 3.22 ERA in 23 starts last season.

Diamondbacks happy to see Delgado on the mound

Though it's early, not a lot has gone the D-backs way so far this season. They've already manged to amass a 1-3 record.

Randall Delgado will take to the mound Thursday, which should bring some relief for Arizona. In the D-backs past seven games with Delgado starting, the team has walked away with a win in six of those. Arizona has also had opposing pitcher, Tim Lincecum's, number taking six of the past eight when he is on the mound.

Darvish expected back in the rotation Sunday

Good news for the Texas Rangers as Yu Darvish will make his first start of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday.

Darvish had to delay his initial start due to neck stiffness. After throwing an 86-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and feeling no pain Wednesday, the Rangers didn't hesitate to put him back on the mound.

Darvish was 13-9 with a 2.84 ERA and 277 strikeouts while finishing second in Cy Young voting last season.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Cubs' leadoff hitter Emilio Bonifacio is 11-18 in his first three games, batting a cool .688. He's on pace for 594 hits this season.

-- Spurs had their 19-game winning streak snapped by the Thunder, who match up really well with San Antonio.

-- Georgia's Mark Fox, Utah's Larry Krystkowiak both got contract extensions, as offers from other schools get them a bump in salary.

-- Missouri guard Jabari Brown led the SEC in scoring this year; now he's gone to the NBA. Teams that avoid these early departures are the teams that win, except for Kentucky, which seemingly has a new team every year.

-- You watch Cuban 1B Jose Abreu play for the White Sox and you wonder if he has ever played ball in 35-degree weather before. It can't be a lot of fun.

-- Umpire Sean Barber's first MLB game behind the plate lasted 4:02, with total of 363 pitches, as the A's beat Seattle 3-2 in 12 innings. He'll never forget it.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with the weekend here.......

13) The two people in this world who have made me laugh the most are Steve Martin and David Letterman; Thursday night, Letterman announced that he'll retire from his CBS show sometime next year. What a career he has had, starting out as a weatherman in Indianapolis, then on a variety show with Mary Tyler Moore, then an ill-fated daytime show, before hitting it big in latenight TV.

Thanks for the laughs, sir. You'll be missed.

12) ESPN's Trey Wingo tweeted Thursday how his first job in TV was as an NBC page in New York, at Letterman's TV show there, and how it is still the most fun he's ever had in his career. Pretty cool tribute.

11) Boston College hired Jim Christian to replace Steve Donahue; Christian was a steady winner in the MAC (186-80, 101-37 in league), but went 56-73. 18-44 at TCU, and BC is a fairly similar job in the ACC to what TCU is in the Big X. Hard to be a strong ACC team at BC.

If BC was serious about basketball, they would've gone after alum Bruce Pearl.

10) Wake Forest is trying to lure Danny Manning from Tulsa, but its hard to throw cash at a guy who made $56M during his NBA playing career, especially when Tulsa offered to double his salary and give him a private plane to recruit with. His man question has to be, “Can I win at Wake Forest?” You’re in the same neighborhood as Duke/Carolina and at a very small school. Tough decision.

9) Colorado Rockies' star Carlos Gonzalez left Wednesday's game in Miami early after he got sick from swallowing tobacco juice. Oy.

8) Cleveland Browns blew off Jadeveon Clowney’s pro day because they had Blake Bortles in for his private workout. Browns have to take a QB in the draft; they cut two of the three they had last year.

7) Xavier Musketeers are going to Brazil for nine days in August, which gives them ten extra practices before they leave; those trips are usually very beneficial, unless one of the players gets hurt. USC/Butler both lost key players for the season on foreign trips; Butler this year, Trojans lost PG Jio Fontan for the season back when Kevin O’Neill was coaching and it led to the end of his tenure there.

6) I’m wondering if Richard Pitino will someday wind up replacing his dad as the coach at Louisville; pretty cool seeing the elder Pitino rooting like hell for his son's Gophers from behind the Minnesota bench at the NIT final in New York. .

5) Tubby Smith once won a national title at Kentucky, coaching Rick Pitino's players in his first season in Lexington; now Pitino's son wins an NIT title coaching Smith's players after Tubby moved from Minnesota to Texas Tech.

4) With A’s moving their spring training to Mesa next spring, Arizona State’s baseball team is taking over Phoenix Municipal Stadium, moving their home games off campus, but to a much nicer facility.

3) St John’s can’t keep players from leaving early; now Chris Obekpa (2.9 blocks per game in 20 minutes/game) is transferring. Hard to develop a winning program when you never have veteran leadership.

2) Things you learn watching Kansas City Royals’ games: Nori Aoki’s last name means “blue tree” in Japanese.

1) Next season, DeSean Jackson will count as $4.25M against the Redskins' salary cap, $6.25M against Philadelphia's. Go figure.

First game at Coors Field gets highest total this season

Not surprisingly, baseballs most hitter friendly park has gotten the largest total so far in this early season.

The Rockies will host the Diamondbacks with an O/U total of 10. Neither team has been especially hot offensively so far this season. Colorado is averaging 3.75 runs per game and Arizona is averaging 4 runs per game.

Twins have a troubling record against Indians

The Minnesota Twins have not really gotten off to a blistering start this season and Friday may be no different.

The Twins have have dropped the last six meetings against the Cleveland Indians, including every game in a four-game series to end last season in which they were outscored 28-13.

Minnesota does slightly better when they travel to Cleveland, holding a far from impressive 3-7 record in their last 10 in Progressive Field.

The Twins (+161) will be in action against the Indians (-175) Friday.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Six coaches who used to be head coach at Tulsa........

-- Nolan Richardson 119-37, 1980-85—Won NIT in his first year there, moved on to Arkansas four years later.

-- Tubby Smith 79-43, 1991-95-- made it to two Sweet 16’s, took the Georgia job. -- Steve Robinson 46-18, 1995-97

—Bolted to Florida State, is now an assistant at Kansas.

-- Bill Self 74-27, 1997-2000—Oklahoma State grad has found great success head coach at Kansas.

-- Buzz Peterson 26-11, 2000-01—Annoyed lot of people when he left after one year. Just got fired by NC-Wilmington last month.

-- Danny Manning 38-21, 2012-14—Whoever gets this job has a nice team coming back, if all the returning players actually return.

*****

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Dodgers benched Yasiel Puig for Friday’s home opener because he was late for batting practice. Matt Kemp started in his place, after being activated off the DL.

12) I’m usually not a big Keith Olbermann fan, but the ESPN talking head did an excellent tribute to David Letterman Thursday night; its on ESPN.com and its worth a few minutes of your time.

11) Wake Forest hired Danny Manning away from Tulsa, which can’t make the people in Oklahoma too happy (see List of 6 up above). Lot of good coaches have come through Tulsa over the years; problem is, they don’t stay very long.

10) FOX Saturday baseball is on FOX Sports1 now, not regular FOX; this avoids any potential overlap between an extra inning ballgame and the start of one of the Saturday night NASCAR races. Its not going to help baseball’s ratings, though; lot of people still don’t know where FOX Sports1 is.

9) Champ Bailey goes from Denver to New Orleans as a free agent, as Saints keep trying to improve their defense.

8) There is a rumor going around that Sonic fast food is coming to my hometown of Colonie, in the old L-Ken’s location; this would be tremendous news, not as tremendous as In ‘n Out Burger or Steak 'n Shake, but still very good news.

7) Washington State gave Ernie Kent $1.4M a year, plus $625,000 a year to pay his three assistants with; same AD who hired him at Oregon hired him for this job. Kent has been out of coaching for four years; if I’m paying a coach $1.4M a year, I’d probably want a better coach, not someone who’s been out of it for four years, but he did have some success at Oregon.

6) Twins have their home opener Monday afternoon; as of Friday morning, Target Field was still covered with snow. Why didn’t they build a retractable dome like Miller Park?!?!?!?!

5) Dustin Johnson shot a 43 on the front nine Thursday, withdrew from the Houston Open with a bad back. He had an 8 on a par-4. Lot of bad backs in golf lately. Maybe Johnson just wantesd to get to Augusta early.

4) Indians gave 2B Jason Kipnis $52.5M for six years, buying away his arbitration years. If Kipnis remains a good player, it’s a terrific deal for the Tribe.

3) Wrigley Field is older than the Lincoln Monument and the Golden Gate Bridge; love watching games from there on TV. Curious to see what it looks like when the new electronic scoreboard goes up in centerfield.

2) Donald Trump was in Albany this week? How come I didn’t know this? Wonder what this country would be like if he ever became President?

1) A's-Mariners were postponed Friday night because the genius groundskeepers left the tarp off the field after the 12-inning game Thursday night and there was a downpour overnight that screwed up the field bigtime. Workers were pulling an overnight Friday night to get the game ready for Saturday afternoon's game. Oy.
