July Pitchers Report
June 29, 2016

Fireworks and the MLB All-Star game go hand-in-hand during the month of July. It also denotes the start of the 2nd half of the MLB campaign. And as we’ve come to learn the key to each and every team’s fortune lies on the pitching staff.

Can they sustain or will they unravel like Jose Canseco going back on a fly ball? Stay tuned. What we do know is that certain pitchers love hurling this time of the season while others tend to get lit up like a roman candle on the 4thof July.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of July.

On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in July, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each July over the last three years.

And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s July list.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

*Chen, Wei-Yin - 9-4 (5-1 H)

The Miami left-hander has not been terribly effective with an ERA hovering around 5. If Chen can develop more command, he's shown again this year he's tough when in challenging situations, allowing .186 batting average and .271 on-base percentage with runners in scoring position.

Garza, Matt - 9-3 (5-1 H)

Since coming back from spring training injury on June 14th, the Milwaukee right-hander has been a mix of good and bad, but come through when it counted. Opposing hitters are batting over .300 against Garza, but he's held those runners in check and induced a heavy dose of ground balls that have led to outs. If he continues, this Brewers starter might be effective.

Greinke, Zack - 11-4 (6-2 H)

Though Arizona is falling short of preseason expectations, the Diamondbacks ace is not and, other than Clayton Kershaw, has arguably been as effective as any pitcher since the end of April with batters hitting around .200 against him. Once again his array of pitches are finding the right spots and fastball is cooking!

Kazmir, Scott - 10-5 (6-2 H)

When Kazmir misses on location for fastball, the other team's lineup begins to look for off-speed stuff, which has caused his inconsistency this season. When he's working the corners on the knees early in the count, this sets up secondary pitches. In the past he's done so in July, let's see what he comes up with this time.

*Kershaw, Clayton - 12-3 (8-0 A)

When either Kershaw loses or has a less than stellar performance, which is infrequent, it is home page news on most sports websites. With opponents batting just .185 against him, baseball's best pitcher has close to as many home runs surrendered (6) as walks (9) to start the month over 121 innings. It’s no wonder his name is whispered in the same company as Sandy Koufax.

Kluber, Corey - 13-4 (9-2 H)

Since winning the Cy Young award in 2014, Kluber has not been able to match that magical season, but is part of a very good Cleveland rotation. Looking ahead, if the Indians righty can do a better job than permitting .281 batting averages with runners in scoring position, all his numbers will drop and his victories will go up. Note: Kluber’s numbers above also reflect his career team mark during July.

*Liriano, Francisco - 12-2 (7-0 H)

After several fine seasons with Pittsburgh, Liriano has not been effective in 2016. Walks and home runs have done him in and in order to reflect past results of July, he's going to have to stop leaving pitches in the heart of the plate.

Peralta, Wily - 8-4 (5-1 H)

Peralta has been thoroughly ineffective all season (6.68 ERA) and was sent to minors after June 11th start. His return this month or this season depends on his Triple-A results. Note: Peralta’s numbers above also reflect his career team mark during July.

Price, David - 11-5 (7-1 A)

To date, the Boston lefty could be described as a mild disappointment, with an ERA north of 4.5 most of the season. No longer owning an upper 90's heater, Price does not blow away as many hitters as before and the fastball lacks some of the previous movement of the past. The slider has not had the usual bite from start to start. Red Sox need this ace to be one.

Ross, Tyson - 10-4 (4-1 H)

Ross has not pitched since he hit the DL with right shoulder inflammation after first start in April. San Diego Union reports a return even this month appears optimistic.
Note: Ross’ numbers above also reflect his career team mark during July.

Santana, Ervin - 11-4 (8-1 H)

Like his teammates, Santana is not having a good year, as opposing hitters are clocking him for nearly .300 average, compared to .256 over his 11-year career. Little reason to believe this month will match the past even if he improves with this Twins club.

*Volquez, Edinson - 10-5 (6-1 A)

Never a frontline hurler, Volquez numbers this campaign have matched the Royals, being very ordinary to date. The Dominican Republic native has done the job against right-handed batters, who have been knocking him around for nearly .300 average.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Wood, Alex - 4-8 (0-6 A)

Wood – the only pitcher to appear on the July Bad Month list this season - was initially expected to be shut down for four weeks after landing on the 15-day disabled list at the end of May with a posterior impingement in his throwing elbow. Currently, the timetable is for mid-July return, but the oft-injured pitcher can hardly be counted on as record shows. Note: Wood’’s numbers above reflect his career team mark during July.

Dodgers to place Kershaw on DL
June 30, 2016

MILWAUKEE (AP) Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw received an epidural injection for his sore lower back and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, manager Dave Roberts said before Thursday's game in Milwaukee.

''Clayton yesterday got an epidural, so at this point we're going to put him on the disabled list,'' Robert said. ''And use the All-Star break, obviously, with the four days. And in the coming days, we should know more how that epidural . how he responds to that and that will give us some more direction.''

Roberts did not know how long Kershaw is expected to be out, or who would make his scheduled start Friday at home against Colorado.

The three-time NL Cy Young winner is 11-2 with a 1.79 ERA this season. He lost his last start on Sunday night in Pittsburgh, giving up four runs and nine hits in six innings.

''He's been our most valuable player,'' Roberts said. ''When you lose a player to the disabled list like Clayton, who you've counted on the fifth day start, obviously that's out of our control. I know Clayton's very disappointed, but it's up to us to pick him up.''

The loss of Kershaw is another blow for a pitching staff beset with injuries. Starters Hyun-Jin Ryu and Brandon McCarthy are on rehab assignments coming back from surgery. Left-hander Alex Wood, who went on the disabled list on May 31 with an elbow problem, was transferred to the 60-day DL on Wednesday.

Brock Stewart, who opened the season at Class A, made his first big league start Wednesday night. Julio Urias, 19, has made three starts since being called up May 27, picking up his first victory in the series opener on Tuesday night.

''It happens to every team, injuries, and we've been bit by the injury bug,'' Robert said. ''Your best player, to deal with this, it's a big blow, but we've got to keep moving forward.''

Kershaw has been on the disabled list only once in his nine-year career, in early 2014 with a shoulder strain.

TORONTO (AP) Carlos Carrasco struck out a season-high 14, Jason Kipnis and Rajai Davis hit solo home runs and the Cleveland Indians matched a franchise record by winning their 13th consecutive game Thursday night, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1.

Cleveland's streak is the longest by any team this season, and the longest for the Indians since winning 13 straight in 1951. Cleveland also won 13 in a row in 1942.

Carrasco (4-2) allowed one run and three hits in 7 1/3 innings to win back-to-back starts for the first time since April 13 and 19. The right-hander was sidelined from April 25 to June 2 with a strained left hamstring.

Cody Allen got the last three outs for his 17th save.

R.A. Dickey (5-9) allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings.

TIGERS 10, RAYS 7

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Cameron Maybin capped a dramatic eight-run ninth inning with a tiebreaking three-run double, and Detroit overcame a five-run deficit.

Detroit trailed 7-2 entering the ninth and opened the inning with four consecutive hits off Ryan Garton, including Victor Martinez's RBI single.

Erasmo Ramirez (7-7) replaced Garton and allowed Justin Upton's run-scoring single, Steven Moya's sacrifice fly and an RBI single to Jarrod Saltalamacchia that made it 7-6.

Jose Iglesias drew a walk to load the bases, and Ian Kinsler got another free pass on a 3-2 pitch to tie it 7-7.

Maybin's drive to left-center cleared the bases to put Detroit up 10-7.

Winner Anibal Sanchez (5-8) gave up two runs in two innings. Francisco Rodriguez got the final three outs for his 22nd save.

INDIANS 4, BLUE JAYS 1

YANKEES 2, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Chase Headley scored on a passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and New York won in its final at-bat for the second straight game.

Didi Gregorius, who had the winning home run Wednesday night, hit a solo shot in the fifth to tie the score after Shin-Soo Choo homered to lead off the game.

Tony Barnette (5-3), the third Rangers reliever of the afternoon, walked Headley to lead off the bottom of the ninth. With runners on second and third and two outs, his pitch got through catcher Robinson Chirinos and Headley just beat the throw.

Aroldis Chapman (2-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth.

METS 4, CUBS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes socked a colossal home run, Jeurys Familia pitched out of a huge jam in the ninth inning and rookie replacement Brandon Nimmo keyed a three-run rally in the seventh that sent New York past Chicago in their first meeting since last year's NL Championship Series.

Baez's throwing error at second base allowed Nimmo to score the go-ahead run, and the Mets overcame a 3-0 deficit to stop their four-game slide. New York, which swept Chicago last October to reach the World Series, had lost nine straight regular-season games to the Cubs dating to August 2014.

Joel Peralta (0-1) walked slumping pinch-hitter Alejandro De Aza before Nimmo, starting for injured outfielder Curtis Granderson, singled on the ninth pitch of a gritty at-bat for his first career RBI.

Erik Goeddel (1-0) struck out two in 1 2/3 hitless innings for the win.

NATIONALS 13, REDS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Danny Espinosa hit a grand slam and a three-run homer to finish with a career-high seven RBIs, and Washington cruised to its fifth straight victory.

The switch-hitting shortstop connected off Brandon Finnegan (3-7) batting right-handed, then went deep from the left side against Josh Smith.

Gio Gonzalez (4-7) gave up four runs and struck out nine over six innings for the NL East-leading Nationals.

ROYALS 4, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Kendrys Morales homered and recorded his sixth straight multihit game to lead Kansas City.

Wade Davis recorded his 19th save in 21 opportunities.

Morales, a designated hitter playing right field for the second straight night, doubled in the sixth inning off Mike Leake (5-6) to push the lead to 3-1.

Kansas City reliever Dillon Gee (3-2) picked up the win allowing one run in two innings.

DODGERS 8, BREWERS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Trayce Thompson, Yasmani Grandal and Corey Seager hit home runs to lead Los Angeles.

Kenta Maeda (7-5) held the Brewers to one run over six innings.

Thompson put the Dodgers in front in the second with a two-run homer off Zach Davies (5-4). Grandal extended the Dodgers' lead in the fourth with a solo blast over the left-field bullpen. Seager's homer in the fifth accounted for two of the Dodgers' three runs in the inning.

WHITE SOX 6, TWINS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - J.B. Shuck's two-out single scored the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning and Todd Frazier hit his 23rd home run for Chicago.

Fernando Abad (1-2) got the first two batters in the eight before consecutive walks. Shuck's career high-tying third hit of the game to left scored Avisail Garcia from second.

Nate Jones (4-2) allowed a hit while getting four outs and David Robertson worked around a single in the ninth for his 21st save.

BRAVES 8, MARLINS 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Pinch-hitter Brandon Snyder had two RBIs in a four-run sixth inning to help Atlanta rally.

Dario Alvarez (2-1) earned the win.

Wei-Yin Chen (4-3) allowed eight hits, four runs, two walks and struck out two in 5 1/3 innings.

LEADING OFF: Hammel vs deGrom, Rangers need relief
June 30, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

PITCHING IN

Two of the NL's ERA leaders square off when the Cubs' Jason Hammel (7-4, 2.58) faces the Mets' Jacob deGrom (3-4, 2.67). Hammel has lost three of his past four starts despite a 3.70 ERA, including a hard-luck 6-1 loss to Miami last time out in which Hammel allowed two runs in six innings. Luck hasn't been on deGrom's side, either. The right-hander hasn't won since April 30, and New York lost 1-0 to Julio Teheran and the Braves in his last start.

RELIEF NEEDED

After losing two straight to the Yankees on game-ending plays in the ninth inning, the Rangers and their struggling bullpen continue a 10-game road trip at Minnesota. Texas leads the majors with nine walk-off defeats, and no other team had more than five entering Thursday. Despite boasting the best record in the AL, Texas has the highest bullpen ERA (4.88) in the league. Despite all of that, the Rangers are an impressive 17-6 in one-run games.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Corey Seager and the Dodgers begin a season-high 10-game homestand with three games against the Rockies. Los Angeles' banged-up rotation took another hit Thursday with news that Clayton Kershaw was headed for the disabled list , and newly acquired Bud Norris is expected to start the opener against Colorado. The Dodgers have been buoyed in the meantime by blossoming shortstop Corey Seager, who hit .337 with seven home runs and a 1.053 OPS in June.

POWERLESS ANGELS

The Angels are 32-47 entering a three-game series in Boston, putting them on pace for the worst record in franchise history. Manager Mike Scioscia held a closed-door meeting after the team lost for the ninth time in 10 games Wednesday, and although everybody described the meeting as relatively upbeat, the Angels didn't emerge with any big ideas on how to slow a season going south. Among the reasons for Los Angeles' struggles: the Angels rank in the bottom third of the AL in home runs and slugging percentage. ''We know we've seen some guys performing at their absolute worst for the first half, and we know they're better than that,'' Scioscia said. ''That's going to be our goal, to get those guys going in the right direction. ... I don't think these guys are taking losing in stride. I think that's a positive.''

WELCOME BACK

Anthony DeSclafani (2-0, 1.52) looks for another solid start in a game against the Nationals. DeSclafani has been mostly dominant for the Reds since making his season debut in early June after recovering from an oblique injury. Last time out, the 26-year-old right-hander threw eight innings of five-hit ball in a 3-0 win over San Diego. Washington counters with right-hander Tanner Roark (7-5, 2.96).

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Indians won their 13th straight game last night; last time the Tribe won 13 games in a row, the Rochester Royals (now Sacramento Kings) were NBA champions.

-- Clayton Kershaw goes on the DL with a bad back. Dodgers acquired Bud Norris from Atlanta for two low-level minor league relief pitchers. Dodgers are desperate for starting pitching.

-- Marlins acquired closer Fernando Rodney from San Diego.

-- Giants didn't use a DH in Oakland last night; they let Madison Bumgarner hit.

-- Bronx pushed CC Sabathia's next start back to Monday; they don't want him to hit in San Diego this weekend and risk having him run the bases and get hurt.

-- Happy Canada Day to all of our friends north of the border.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Looking at SEC football teams.....

Alabama-- 39-5 SU in last 44 conference games, 27-17 vs spread. +63 in turnovers last nine years, but allowed 40+ points in three of last four bowl/playoff games- they are 3-2 in last five bowl/playoff games.

Arkansas-- Won last three bowl games, all by 13+ points; are +14 in turnovers last two years, after being -28 the two years before that. Razorbacks are 18-7-1 vs spread last two years, 11-4-1 in conference play.

Auburn-- Have eight new assistant coaches this year, after going 15-11 last two years. Scored 31+ points in last four bowls, but split those games. 7-19 vs spread in last 26 games, 3-9 in last 12 tries as a home favorite.

Florida-- Went 10-4 in McIlwain's first year, after going 29-23 under Muchamp, who is now the coach at South Carolina. Gators are 6-14 as home favorites since 2012; they covered six of last eight as a road favorite. Have two transfer QBs battling for #1 job; from Oregon State, Purdue-- one is Jack Del Rio's son.

Georgia-- Why did they fire Mark Richt? Dawgs are 50-17 last five years, have a +41 turnover ratio last five years. Since '13, are 9-17 vs spread coming off a win. Special teams coach in new regime is Shane Beamer, who spent last fuve years working for his father at Virginia Tech.

Kentucky-- Last bowl was 2010, last bowl win in '08. Wildcats are 14-6 as favorites at home since '10, but are 1-9-2 in last 12 tries as a home underdog. Cats are 7-18 as a road dog since 2010-- last time they were favored on the road was five years ago.

LSU-- In 2011-12, Tigers were +36 in TOs, went 23-4. Last three years, Tigers have a +10 TO ratio, are 27-11 and Les Miles barely kept his job. Last two years, LSU QBs completed 50%/53.6% of their passes- that has to go up. Tigers are 4-11 against the spread in true road games the last four years.

Ole Miss-- Favorites covered their last five bowl games; Rebels won five of them, are 13-7-1 as home favorites under Freeze, 11-4 as underdogs. Ole Miss lost four of its top six tacklers from LY. Kelly threw for 4,042 yards, 31 TDs last year.

Mississippi State-- Six straight winning seasons, are 19-7 last two years. Mullen is 15-8-1 vs spread in SEC last three years, 6-2 as road underdog, 18-10 in last 28 games as a home favorite. Six straight winning years in Starkville is no small feat.

Missouri-- Will miss underrated coach Pinkel. Won last three bowl games, all by 10+ points, scoring 35 ppg. Tigers are +24 in turnovers last three years. Mizzou is 16-6 vs spread off a loss, but 2-6 in last eight games as a home underdog.

South Carolina-- Spurrier is tough act to follow, especially with only nine starters back. Gamecocks are 9-15 vs spread in SEC last three years- they're 1-5-1 in their last seven games as a road favorite. Won last four bowls, were underdog in last two.

Tennessee-- Vols are 3-9 vs spread in last dozen games where spread was 4 or less points-- Jones isn't a good game manager, but he can recruit- they won 45-28/45-6 in last two bowls. Hae senior QB who needs to improve on 59.3% completion % from last year-- with 22 starts under his belt, Dobbs should be better than he is. .

Texas A&M-- Were minus in turnovers six of last seven years (-33 total), are 6-12 vs spread as home favorite last three years (6-17-1 vs spread in SEC games), covered just four of last 13 as a dog. Aggies have won four of their last five bowl games.

Vanderbilt-- 7-17 since James Franklin left, with -24 turnover ratio. Commodores are 10-5 as home underdog since '11, 11-6 as road dogs since '12, 22-13 overall in last 35 games when getting points. Won three of last four bowls, with average total of 64 in last three-- their last bowl was in 2013, Franklin's final year as coach.

Five truly Canadian bets to make this Canada Day

This July 1, celebrate Canada Day by wagering a few Loonies and Toonies on these All-Canadian bets.

I’ve had possibly the most Canadian week ever leading into the July 1 holiday, better known as “Canada Day”.

After subduing the football shakes with a couple bets on Week 1 of the CFL season (underdogs are now a perfect 8-0 ATS the last two opening weeks), I proceeded to injure my ankle playing Ultimate Frisbee and needed a trip to the hospital - a trip that didn’t cost me jack squat since we have kick-ass health care in Canada.

Once my foot felt better, I spent an evening mowing my lawn. And, after finishing up and briefly heading inside to grab an ice-cold Moosehead, I returned to my freshly-coiffed backyard to find a big-ass wild turkey confidently strutting about like Mike Reno, the lead singer for “Loverboy”.

My first instinct, since I’m a red-blooded Canuck, was to find out if it was turkey hunting season. It is not. And my second instinct, since I’m a red-blood Canuck, was to politely ask the turkey to leave – for which I’d immediately apologize for. Sorry.

But my third instinct, and one that speaks to the sports bettor in all of us, was to get that turkey something to eat. I grabbed whatever I thought a turkey would care to snack on and threw it at the big dumb bird. If I feed this turkey all summer long and keep him coming back for more, by the time the fall rolls around (AKA turkey season), he’ll be fatter than a garbage bag full of Tim Horton’s day-olds.

You see: risk a little to get a lot. That’s a gambler’s Holy Grail.

So, after being served a big slice of Canadiana this week, it only seems fitting to return the favor to my fellow sports bettors in the Great White North, and even those of you outside our vast borders. With Canada Day kicking off the weekend Friday, here are my favorite Canadian inspired bets for July 1:

Toronto Blue Jays

When the Red Sox are winning, Boston is buzzing. When the Cubs are cruising, Chicago is jumping. But when the Blue Jays are rolling, the entire nation is losing their frickin’ minds.

Take last season’s incredible second-half run and postseason appearance by Toronto. Jose Bautista’s infamous bat flip against the Rangers actually made Canadian sports fans forget about hockey for a few minutes. If you had immediately lobbied for the silhouette of Bautista barbarically discarding his bat to replace the maple leaf in the middle of the Canadian flag, it would have passed with a unanimous vote.

This Canada Day, the Jays are home to the red-hot Cleveland Indians. Toronto will be sporting their special red attire for the nation’s birthday, giving the nod to Marcus Stroman for the matinee start. The Blue Jays, who are currently -118 favorites, have won the last three July 1 outings and have outscored opponents 23-6 in those games.

CFL

It just doesn’t feel like Canada Day without some three-down football, am I right? It's like seeing Tom Cochrane without a jean jacket on. Last year, July 1 was void of any CFL action but the schedule makers have more than made up for that with a “double double” of Canadian pigskin Friday.

The BC Lions are visiting the Hamilton Ti-Cats, moving from touchdown dogs to 5.5-point pups in the early game. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are on the road facing the Calgary Stampeders later in the day, with Calgary moving from -8.5 to -10.5 – a rare double-digit CFL favorite.

Parity is the name of the game in the Canadian Football League. Last season, there were only five double-digit spreads all year, with those big faves going 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS. The Stamps were responsible for two of those double-digit covers.

Wimbledon tennis

Both Canadian tennis stars, Milos Raonic on the men’s side and Eugenie Bouchard on the women’s, have advanced to the third round at the All England Club.

Bouchard, seeded 16th, faces 19th-seed Dominika Cibulkova next, with oddsmakers setting Genie as a +133 underdog despite defeating Cibulkova in both of their career meetings, including earlier this year at the Hobart Open. You can be sure that Covers' own Andrew “Taco” Caley will have a ticket on Bouchard, to go with his creepy shrine to Canada’s resident tennis goddess.

Raonic, who has yet to drop a set at Wimbledon, takes on American Jack Sock in the third round. Books have the Thornhill, Ontario native priced at -720 to advance. If swallowing that amount of juice feels like chugging a warm can of Labatt Maximum Ice (or even an ice-cold Maximum Ice... yuck), then perhaps you can cool down the vig by taking Milos at -103 to win in three straight sets.

MLS soccer

Is the quality of the Euro Cup just too good for you to wager on? Do you need a watered-down version of the beautiful game in which you know none of the players, nor did you realize half of the teams in the league even existed? Major League Soccer is begging you to bet on it. No, really. It is. On both knees.

There are three Canadian clubs in the MLS: Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. And according to our standings, none of them are really great – and none of them actually play on the Canada Day holiday.

However, Montreal hosts New England Saturday, as a +117 favorite in the three-way betting, and Toronto takes on visiting Seattle as a -139 three-way fave to win. Say what you want about the quality of the play, but I’ve heard it’s quite the party in the stands for a MLS game. Throw a long-weekend rager in the middle of those wagers, and I’m sold!

NHL futures

Hockey fans from East to West were extremely pissed off Wednesday when two massive trades by Canadian NHL clubs left puck faithful scratching their heads in Montreal and Edmonton. You would have thought they were outlawing the use of Muskoka chairs at the end of lake-view docks with the way Canadians (and Canadiens) were losing their shit.

Montreal dealt face of the franchise P.K. Subban to Nashville for fellow blueliner Shea Weber, while Edmonton packed up leading scorer Taylor Hall and sent him to New Jersey for defenseman Adam Larsson.

I have friends in both camps and let me tell you, Facebook was not a pretty place once those guys vented their frustrations. If anything fellas, you can get the Habs and Oilers at juicy odds to win the Stanley Cup next year with Montreal going off at +2,500 and Edmonton at +5,500.

Friday's Diamond Notes
July 1, 2016

Hottest team:
Indians (13-0 last last 13)
The Tribe takes the field for a Canada Day matinee against the Blue Jays, looking to set a new franchise record for consecutive wins at 14. Standing in the way is a Toronto squad that has a 4-0 record on the holiday under manager John Gibbons, winning three straight in this his second tenure. The Jays will wear special red uniforms and should be energized by a sellout crowd, so this one could have a postseason feel in a game where the home team has been installed as a slight favorite despite Cleveland’s hot streak. Staff ace Marcus Stroman has won just once in his last six starts and his ERA has ballooned from 3.89 to 5.33 since May 22, so he’ll be looking to start hitting his stride against a Indians squad against whom he has a career 27.00 ERA against, getting rocked four earned runs in 1.1 innings in his rookie season of 2014. Josh Tomlin will look to try and help Cleveland make more history by improving to 10-1, which would tie likely All-Star Danny Salazar for the team lead in wins. The Indians are 12-2 in Tomlin’s starts this season. They’ve outscored teams 80-26 during their current run of victories.

Coldest team:
Angels (0-3 last 3, 1-9 last 10)
After being swept at home by Houston by a combined margin of 21-7, the Angels held a closed-door meeting before heading East for a 10-game road trip. Mike Scioscia’s team is on pace for the worst record in franchise history after an 8-19 June record that their worst in the month since 1980. That team lost 95 games, one less than this current team is on pace for. Yunel Escobar has missed the last few games with a knee injury and hopes to return here to provide some help for Mike Trout, who went 18-for-30 with three homers despite their 1-6 homestand. Friday’s starter, Jhoulys Chacin, has failed to get out of the sixth in any of his last five starts, surrendering nine earned runs while walking nine and striking out a single batter over his last 6.2 innings. The Red Sox will turn to Steven Wright, who leads the team with a 2.18 ERA and 12 quality starts. The knuckleballer went 3-1 with a 1.62 ERA in June despite struggling in his last outing at Texas, lasting just 4.2 innings. Trout and Albert Pujols have each homered despite just five career at-bats against him. These teams will close July with a four-game set in Anaheim.

Hottest pitcher
: Michael Fulmer (7-2, 2.40 ERA)
Detroit’s 23-year-old rookie went 3.1 with a remarkable 0.61 ERA in June, giving up just two earned runs and one homer in 29.2 innings. He lasted just 4.1 innings on June 22 against the Mariners, leaving after a wild stretch that the Tigers chalked up to arm fatigue. With extra rest under his belt, he’ll look to bounce back against a Rays offense he held to just one run over seven innings in Detroit on May 21, striking out a career-high 11. Considering his teammates completed an epic comeback from a 7-2 ninth-inning defict by scoring eight runs, it’s no surprise the Tigers have been bet up to a heavier favorite over host Tampa Bay, which turns to lefty Drew Smyly.

Coldest pitcher:
Nathan Eovaldi (6-5, 5.19 ERA)
“Nasty” Nate opened the season 6-2 and was arguably New York’s most consistent starter over the first two months, but the bottom fell out in June. The Yankees won just one of his five starts, needing to score 13 runs to do so. In all, Eovaldi completed six innings only once, closing the month with an 8.65 ERA and surrendering a home run each time out, giving up 10 in all. For the season, he’s already given up 17, a career-high despite having worked just 86.2 innings, barely half his expected workload if he stays healthy. The Padres will look to tee off on Eovaldi, who in turn hopes the turning of the page on the calendar can get him back on track.

Biggest UNDER run:
Mets (8-3 last 11)
The Mets benefited from a Javier Baez throwing error to pull off a 4-3 win in the series opener against the Cubs, snapping a four-game losing streak in the first meeting with Chicago since last season’s NLCS. Chicago had runners reach second and third against closer Jeurys Familia in the top of the 9th on Thursday, but Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras struck out while Baez popped up to end it. Chicago hasn’t beaten New York since last July 2, losing its last six in this series. The Mets have scored more than four runs in a single game just once in their last 13 and turn to Jacob deGrom (3-4, 2.67) against Jason Hammel (7-4, 2.58) in what might set up a pitcher’s duel. Oddsmakers have set the total at 7.

Biggest OVER run
: Twins (17-4-2 last 23)
Despite the worst record in baseball, the Twins have been involved in an astounding amount of high-scoring games since May 23. In a 35-game stretch, either Minnesota or its opponent has scored at least five runs in 30 of them, leading to the ‘over’ going 26-7-2. The ‘under’ came in three straight times from June 25-28, but each of the last two meetings in Chicago produced double-digit runs. The Twins will face the Rangers seven times between now and the All-Star break, which could lead to plenty of fireworks since Texas had scored at least six runs in seven consecutive games before losing 2-1 in the Bronx on Thursday. Lefty Martin Perez (7-4, 3.44) will pitch for the Rangers against Minnesota’s Ervin Santana (2-7, 4.64). The total has been set a 9.5.

After a rough stretch that saw a White Sox (40-39) team that had the second-best record in baseball on May 9 slip under .500 by June 8, Chicago looks to be righting its ship entering a critical stretch before the All-Star break. Since being swept by Cleveland to fall to a season-worst 33-36, the White Sox have won seven of 10 and are right back in the Wild Card mix. The Astros (42-37) are in that mix too thanks to victories in 10 of the last 11. Houston has outscored opponents 75-37 in that span and begin a 10-game homestand here. You get the feeling that the entire season can swing for both of these teams based on how they fare over the first part of July, setting up an intriguing series. Miguel Gonzalez (1-3, 5.17) will start the opener for Chicago, who won five of six meetings between these teams last season. Mike Fiers (5-3, 4.41) will go for Houston.

Betcha didn’t know:
Bud Norris (3-7, 4.22) takes Clayton Kershaw’s place in the Dodgers rotation after being acquired from Atlanta for a pair of minor leaguers Thursday once L.A.’s lefty ace went on the disabled list. Ironically, his resurgence started against the Dodgers on June 4 after he was reinserted in the Braves rotation due to injuries following a demotion to the bullpen for all of May. In Norris’ first five starts, he went 1-4 with an 8.74 ERA. After being given a second chance, he allowed just seven earned runs over 29.1 innings, highlighted by his most recent outing where he blanked the Mets on four hits over seven frames, striking out eight batters while making just 88 pitches. L.A. is banking on him bringing that form with him from Atlanta as he joins his fifth major league team. Norris, a Bay Area native who attended Cal Poly, has had just two winning seasons in his eight years in the bigs, is 0-2 in six career appearances at Dodger Stadium, compiling a 3.10 ERA. He’s 2-1 in 10 career appearances against the Rockies, who he hasn't faced yet this season.

Biggest public favorite:
Giants (-160) at Diamondbacks

Biggest public underdog: Orioles (+105) at Mariners

Biggest line move:
A's (-140 to -157) vs. Pirates

Marlins acquire RP Fernando Rodney
June 30, 2016

ATLANTA (AP) Manager Don Mattingly will wait until Friday to announce how the Miami Marlins will use newly acquired closer Fernando Rodney.

Making a push to stay near the top of the NL wild-card race, the Marlins traded a minor league pitcher to get Rodney from San Diego on Thursday.

Mattingly has yet to express a lack of faith in closer A.J. Ramos, who has converted straight 33 saves opportunities since last season, so it seems likely he would stay in that role for the immediate future.

But Mattingly wouldn't say for sure. Rodney, whose 253 career saves are fifth-most among active pitchers, is expected to join the team on Friday in Atlanta.

''Right now, until I get a chance to talk to Fernando, there's nothing I want to talk about role-wise publicly,'' Mattingly said. ''But we'll make sure everybody knows what's going on and then we'll move on.''

Rodney has been outstanding this year, converting 17-of-17 saves chances with a 0.31 ERA in 28 games. The Marlins are his seventh team overall and sixth since 2011.

Ramos has worked as a solid setup man for the Marlins in the past and might have begun this season in that role again if Carter Capps hadn't had a season-ending elbow injury in spring training.

Mattingly spoke to Ramos before Thursday's game against the Braves, but the manager wouldn't say how they discussed his role. Regardless, Mattingly sees Rodney's addition as a win-win situation.

The Marlins began Thursday with a half-game lead over two teams in the NL wild-card standings.

''This is another piece to a really good bullpen right now,'' he said. ''Our guys at the back end have been very good. This just makes us stronger.''

Miami sent right-hander Chris Paddack to the Padres. Paddack, an eighth-round draft pick last year, went 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA in six starts this year for Class A Greensboro.

The Marlins coveted Rodney for his experience and the depth he brings to a bullpen that ranks sixth in the NL and 13th overall with a 3.78 ERA.

''We look at it like we've added a guy who's been rolling this year, has a history of being really good late in games, and we're looking forward to adding that piece to our 'pen,'' Mattingly said.

Assistant general manager Michael Berger said Marlins president of baseball operations Mike Hill started talking trade with San Diego last week.

''The ability to access anybody right now is challenging to say the least,'' Berger said. ''A lot of hard work went into it and in the end we got better. It was already a strength for this club. It's one man stronger.''

Rodney's salary is team-friendly. His pays $1.6 million this year and includes a team option for next season at $2 million.

DOMINANT FOR DETROIT

Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer (7-2) looks to extend his stretch of allowing one run or fewer over eight consecutive starts against the Rays. His current seven-game run ties Justin Verlander (2011) and Al Benton (1945) for the longest by a Tigers pitcher since 1913.
