Quote of the Day
“People in today’s world want instant gratification. The guy’s coached nine games. We’re 2-7, not the results we’re looking for but at the same time we’ve lost six one-score games with the ball and a chance to win at the end. I gave him my vote of confidence when I signed him to a contract to be coach of the Raiders. That’s when I gave it to him. Rome was not built in a day.”
Raiders’ owner Mark Davis

— McLaurin caught eight passes for 128 yards.
— Joey Slye kicked four FG’s, three of them from 44, 58, 55 yards out.
— Only 2nd win for Washington in their last 11 games against the Eagles.

— This was first time all season Eagles trailed in the second half.
— Eagles had 4 turnovers; they had total of 3 in first eight games.
— Commanders ran 81 plays, Eagles 47.
— Philly scored TD’s on first two drives, only one on last eight.
— Philly has converted 55-107 3rd down plays this year.

— Washington ran 51 plays in the first half Monday night; by contrast, Saints ran 45 plays the whole game in Pittsburgh Sunday. Seattle ran only 50 plays the whole game against Tampa Bay.

— In their three post-bye games, Buffalo Bills have been outscored 33-12 in the second half, scoring no TD’s on 15 drives, with six turnovers.

— Baker Mayfield will start at QB for Carolina this week; PJ Walker has a sprained ankle. Sam Darnold will be the backup.

— Player of the Week in Mountain West football this week is San Diego State QB Jalen Mayden, who was 17-22/268 passing, with 2 TD’s vs San Jose State. He also ran the ball 13 times for 78 yards.

What makes this more interesting is that this summer, Mayden wasn’t listed in the top 5 of QB’s on the Aztecs’ roster, but he’s the man now for a team that has won four of its last five games. He threw six passes for San Diego State last year; good for him for hanging in there, instead of just transferring somewhere else.

— Ohio State WR Kamryn Babb caught a TD pass at the end of their game with Indiana last week; normally wouldn’t be a big deal, since it made the score 56-14, but this kid has endured four ACL operations, is a senior and has overcome a lot just to be out on the field.

His teammates elected him a captain; they went nuts when he scored the TD. A good moment.

— Texas Longhorns are 6-4 this year, 11-11 in two years under Steve Sarkisian. Longhorns fired the previous coach, Tom Herman, after he went 32-18 as head coach. Awkward.

— West Virginia fired their athletic director, which could be bad news for their football coach. Mountaineers are 4-6 this year, 21-24 in four years under Neal Brown, The natives are restless.

— Football fans at Mississippi State ring cowbells during home games, for whatever reason; the school bookstore sells cowbells- they sell an average of 200 a day on football weekends.

— Houston Astros just won the World Series, with the #9 payroll in baseball; they manage their payroll by signing lot of international players, whose bonuses are generally lower than players taken in the amateur draft in this country.

Framber Valdez made $3M this year.
Luis Garcia made $1,251,500
Cristian Javier made $749,100

Curious to see if they re-sign Justin Verlander this winter. They did give reliever Rafael Montero a 3-year deal for $34.5M this week.

— There is another Matt Ryan (not the Colts’ QB) in pro sports; Lakers have a Matt Ryan, who is averaging 4.7 points/game in 10 games, playing 12.2 minutes/game.

He played ball at three colleges- Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Chattanooga, shooting 36.3% on the arc over four seasons.

Ryan gets his first NBA paycheck today; he is making $1.64M this year, but has to stick on the roster until January 10 to have the contract fully guaranteed. Not bad for a guy who recently worked as a delivery driver for DoorDash and worked at his grandfather’s business run out of a graveyard in White Plains, NY.

Shooting is marketable in the NBA; Ryan is 13-31 on the arc (41.9%) this year. He keeps that up, and he won’t be driving DoorDash anymore.

— Joel Embiid had a HUGE game Sunday; he scored 57 points, had 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 7 blocked shots as the 76ers beat Utah 105-98. He scored over half their points. 76ers were +25 while Embiid was on the court.

— Big East is playing Big 14 this week, in series of games:
DePaul 69, Minnesota 53— Blue Demons had 20 offensive rebounds.

Penn State 68, Butler 62— Nittany Lions made 11-24 on the arc, took only five foul shots the whole game (4-5). Jalen Pickett scored 15 points, had 9 rebounds, 11 assists.

Northwestern State 64, TCU 63— Pretty big upset here; Horned Frogs led by 12 with 12:54 left in the game. TCU was a preseason top 25 team, but they beat Ark-Pine Bluff 73-72, are off to a slow start.

Stetson 68, South Florida 67— Hatters have wins over Florida State, USF; solid start to the season for the Hatters, who play in the Atlantic Sun, which has 14 teams in it this year.

Florida Atlantic 76, Florida 74— Another upset in the Sunshine State. Owls shot 21-45 on the arc in splitting a pair of games against SEC opponents Ole Miss/Florida.

— Big-time recruit DJ Wagner signed on to play basketball at Kentucky next year; his father Dujuan Wagner played for John Calipari at Memphis; his grandfather Milt Wagner was just hired as an assistant coach by Louisville.

— RIP to Leo Anthony Gallagher, 74, a comedian who passed away last week. His stage name was simply Gallagher; back in the 80’s, he was a regular on talk shows, with an act that usually included smashing a watermelon with a sledgehammer. People in the first couple rows at this shows would often wear ponchos, so the spray from the ill-fated watermelon wouldn’t get on their clothes.

Oddly, he graduated from college with a chemical engineering degree; you wouldn’t think that would lead to a career in comedy.

Back in my high school/college days, I was a big fan of stand-up comedy; Gallagher was one of the better ones. He was freakin’ funny. RIP, sir.
