Tuesday’s 6-pack

Current MLB payrolls for 2023:
$300,283,332— New York (N)
$221,716,666— New York (A)
$207,549,008— Philadelphia
$176,517,878— San Diego
$199,216,666— Atlanta
$167,241,666— LA Angels

Quote of the Day
“Sometimes you don’t get what you want, because you deserve better.”
Anonymous

Tuesday’s quiz
Who was the New Jersey Jets’ QB, last time they made the playoffs?

Monday’s quiz
Stan Humphries was the Chargers’ quarterback, in their one/only Super Bowl appearance.

Sunday’s quiz
Before Caleb Williams won Saturday, Reggie Bush was the last USC Trojan to win the Heisman Trophy, in 2005.

***********************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

Patriots 27, Cardinals 13

— Tied 13-all in third quarter, NE ran Hopkins fumble back for game-winning TD.
— Five of last six New England games stayed under the total.
— Patriots are 5-1 ATS this season coming off a loss.
— Patriots are 1-4 SU when game goes over the total, 6-2 if it stays under.
— New England is 7-0 giving up 17 or less points, 0-6 giving up 20+.

— QB Murray got hurt on 3rd play of game; torn ACL is the fear.
— Cardinals led this game 13-10 at halftime.
— Arizona was outscored in 2nd half in each of its last 8 games.
— Arizona in second half: 34 plays, 113 yards, zero points.
— Arizona is 1-9 SU when it scores less than 29 points.

— David Matranga is Aaron Judge’s agent; he had a very brief major league career himself, playing in six games for the 2003 Astros, one game for the ’05 Angels.

Matranga had one major league hit, a 5th inning home run off Joaquin Benoit on July 27, 2003.

Only 22 major league players ever had one MLB hit, with that hit being a home run; only 4 of those 22 guys did it in their first major league at-bat, like Matranga did.

Agents generally get 3% commission, which makes Aaron Judge’s $360M deal worth $1.08M to Mr Matranga. He’s a better agent than he was a ballplayer.

— Texas Longhorns suspended basketball coach Chris Beard after he was arrested on a felony assault charge late Sunday night. The person that Beard allegedly assaulted is a family member.

— There’s a pretty good chance that the payroll tax the Mets will pay next season will be bigger than the entire payrolls in Oakland/Pittsburgh.

Not a good thing for competitive balance.

— A’s were involved in a 3-team trade Monday:
Milwaukee got C William Contreras and two pitching prospects.
Oakland got five players, best of whom is P Kyle Muller.
Atlanta got C Sean Murphy

— Louisville has a great basketball tradition, but the Cardinals are a mess this year, an 0-9 mess, with three one-point losses. They’re turning ball over 24.4% if time (#356)

Cal Bears are doing even worse; they’re 0-11, with four losses to teams outside the top 200. Golden Bears are shooting 25.4% on arc (#356), 45.4% inside arc (#299).

— Northwestern State Demons are 8-2, with an upset win at TCU; the Demons got national press this weekend when one of their players scored his first college points.

Hansel Emmanuel is a 6-6 guard; he scored 5 points in 8:00 vs UL-Monroe. What makes this newsworthy is that Hansel Emmanuel has only one arm— he lost an arm in a childhood accident, when he was six years old.

— Miami Dolphins are in midst of an odd schedule; they stayed in California last week, in between road games against the 49ers/Chargers. Warm weather games.

This week, Miami plays its third straight road game, Saturday night in Buffalo; December 17 night game in western New York should be a lot of fun.

— Navy fired football coach Ken Niumatalolo over the weekend; Niumatalolo was 109-83 at Navy, 10-5 against Army, but the Middies are 11-23 the last three years. Even at a service academy, you go 11-23 and they tell you to take a hike.

— Baseball happenings:
Giants signed P Sean Manaea to a 2-year, $25M deal.
Blue Jays signed P Chris Bassitt to a 3-year, $63M deal.
Twins signed C Christian Vazquez to a 3-year, $30M deal.

Profitable weekend for a couple of former Oakland A’s.

— These former big leaguers will play pro baseball in Japan next year:
Matt Davidson (Hiroshima Carp)
Sheldon Neuse (Hanshin Tigers)
Frank Schwindel (Orix Buffaloes)
JB Wendelken (Yokohama Baystars)

— Browns’ WR Amari Cooper’s splits in home/road games:
Home games: 91.2 receiving yards/game, 5 TD’s.
True road games: 46.7 receiving yards/game, no TD’s.

Left out the neutral field game against the Bills in Detroit.

— Underdogs are 113-91-4 ATS in the NFL this season; if you wagered $100 on every underdog this season, you’d be $1,237 ahead.

— Detroit Pistons’ star Cade Cunningham is out for the year with a shin injury; Cunningham in scoring 19.9 ppg this season, after scoring 17.4 ppg as a rookie.

— Atlanta Falcons’ QB Marcus Mariota is on IR/out for the year with a knee injury. Falcons signed Logan Woodside to be their backup QB, behind rookie Desmond Ridder, who will make his first NFL start Sunday in New Orleans.

— Coastal Carolina football coach Jamey Chadwell just bolted to Liberty; Chanticleers’ QB Grayson McCall has now entered the transfer portal. Coastal is 9-3 this year; McCall started for the Chanticleers the last three years, and still has two years of eligibility left.

— Lebron James Jr, better known as Bronny James, has 6,000,000 followers on Instagram; he also has a Nike deal and a Beats By Dre contract that includes a commercial.

The kid is a senior in high school; he is 6-3, a top 100 college recruit, will almost definitely be in the 2024 NBA Draft, where he will likely play on the same team as his dad in 2024-25. Where his career goes from there remains to be seen.

“The expectation doesn’t match the talent level, or at least not yet, and that’s where it gets messy.’’ That is the evaluation of one unnamed college coach.

It’ll be interesting to follow; watching the docuseries on the Sierra Canyon team that Bronny plays for, it is clear that he is a good kid, an unselfish player. Sometimes having a famous dad creates unrealistic expectations; we’ll see how this plays out.

Wednesday’s 6-pack

NBA franchises that are worth the most $$$
$7.56B— Golden State
$6.58B— New York
$6.44B— LA Lakers
$4.09B— Chicago
$3.92B— Boston
$3.86B— Brooklyn

Quote of the Day
“I am heartbroken on the passing of Coach Leach. In 1999, he gave a kid out of Snow College in Utah a shot at major college football. He saw something in me when no one else did. Like so many across our sport, I am grateful for Coach Leach’s impact on my life both personally and professionally. His offensive philosophy and vision were ahead of his time, and they continue to shape the game today.”
Tennessee football coach Jeff Heupel

Wednesday’s quiz
Arizona Cardinals’ QB Kyler Murray was also a first round draft pick of which major league baseball team?

Tuesday’s quiz
Mark Sanchez was the New Jersey Jets’ QB, last time they made the playoffs, in 2010.

Monday’s quiz
Stan Humphries was the Chargers’ quarterback, in their one/only Super Bowl appearance.

***********************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

— If you’re a D-I college basketball coach, do you recruit Bronny James?

Lebron’s son is a 6-3 guard who can shoot it; he is unselfish, a good passer, but he’s not his dad, and it appears likely that he’ll only be in college for one year, so it is worth the effort?

Bronny’s high school team was on ESPN2 Monday night against Christ the King; who pays the tab for a high school team from New York City to visit Los Angeles for a game?

So Bronny’s college team will get extra TV games next year, but the top college teams don’t need any more TV exposure. If they did, the kid would’ve already signed with Duke or Kentucky.

He could also go play in the G-League, but the family obviously doesn’t need $$$, so that would seem less likely. You wonder if Bronny’s college team will have reality show about them, which can be pretty good exposure.

— Kyler Murray tore his ACL Monday night, is out for the rest of the year and part of next year. Brutal loss for the Cardinals, who have now lost 12 of their last 13 home games SU.

Bad loss for HBO too; they’re doing a Hard Knocks in-season series on the Cardinals; has to be a lot harder to do when the team’s season is going in the ashcan, like Arizona’s is.

— Since Dan Campbell has coached the Detroit Lions, Lions are 7-2 ATS in games where the spread was 3 or fewer points.

— Creighton Bluejays started their basketball season 6-0, but now they’ve lost five games in a row, with four of the five losses by 5 or fewer points. Only one of the five losses was at home; they open Big East play Friday at Marquette.

Iona 70, Princeton 64
This was a fun game to watch; Rick Pitino’s Gaels are 7-2 now. Iona visits 10-0 New Mexico Saturday in Albuquerque; Richard Pitino’s Lobos hosting his dad’s Gaels, with Iona on their way to Hawai’i for a tournament next week.

— Purdue named 36-year old Ryan Walters their new football coach; Walters is the 4th-youngest coach in I-A football. He comes from a defensive background (was DC at Illinois).

Purdue is 17-9 the last two years, so it isn’t a rebuilding situation.

— Dallas Cowboys didn’t sign Odell Beckham; they signed TY Hilton instead. The former Colts’ WR played 10 years in Indianapolis, but hasn’t played yet this year. He caught 53 TD passes in his decade with the Colts.

— RIP Mike Leach; the Mississippi State football coach passed away Monday night at age 61, after suffering a major heart attack.

Leach won coaching at Washington State, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, in smaller towns but in major conferences. He was unique; a total character who beat to his own drummer— his teams were so much fun to watch.

There was a TV interview where Leach went for five minutes about which Halloween candies he liked/disliked. He was a breath of fresh air in a business that often takes itself too seriously.

RIP coach. You will be missed.

— Joel Payamps is a pitcher who was traded to Milwaukee this week as part of the Sean Murphy 3-team trade. Since November 2020, Payamps has now changed teams seven times:

11/25/20—- Red Sox claimed him off waivers from Arizona
12/10/21— Toronto claimed him off waivers from Boston
12/22/21— Red Sox claimed him off waivers from Toronto
3/6/21— Toronto claimed him off waivers from Boston
7/21/21— Royals bought his contract from Toronto.
8/20/22— A’s claimed him off waivers from Kansas City.
12/12/22— A’s traded him to Milwaukee, in a 3-way deal.

He must be very good at packing.

— Baseball happenings:
San Francisco gave P Ross Stripling a 2-year, $25M deal.
Giants also gave SS Carlos Correa a 13-year, $350M deal
Pittsburgh gave P Vince Velasquez a 1-year, $3.15M deal.
Cleveland gave C Mike Zunino a 1-year, $6M deal.

— If the NFL playoffs started today (they don’t):
AFC: Bills, Chiefs, Ravens, Titans
Wild Cards: Bengals, Dolphins, Patriots

NFC: Eagles, Vikings, 49ers, Buccaneers
Wild Cards: Cowboys, Commanders, Giants

Alabama 91, Memphis 88
Tigers were 1-12 on the arc; only make was with 0:00.6 left in game.
Alabama was 29-40 on foul line, Memphis 19-25.
