Big Monday Tip Sheet
January 31, 2016

The month of February gets off to a hot start in men’s college basketball with a pair of huge matchups featuring a trio of nationally ranked teams as part of ESPN’s Big Monday slate.

Starting in the ACC, the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels will head to Kentucky to face the No. 16 Louisville Cardinals and the backend of Monday’s ESPN double-header is a Big 12 battle between the Texas Longhorns and the No. 17 Baylor Bears in Waco.

No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels at No. 16 Louisville Cardinals (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: North Carolina -1 ½

Betting Matchup

North Carolina is riding a 12-game straight-up winning streak following Saturday’s 88-62 win against Boston College, but it was just the third time the Tar Heels covered against the spread in their last eight games. The total went OVER the 146 ½-point line in that game and it has gone OVER in 10 of their last 13 outings. North Carolina is the fourth-highest scoring team in the nation with an average of 85.8 points a game and it is also ranked fourth in assists with 18.8 a game.

The Cardinals fell to 6-2 SU in conference play following Saturday’s 63-47 loss to Virginia as five-point home favorites. They are now just 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games and they have failed to cover in their last three games as favorites. The total stayed UNDER the closing 129 ½-point line in that game after going OVER in their previous three contests. Louisville’s defense is still one of the best in the nation in points-allowed; giving-up an average of just 60.2 points a game,

Texas Longhorns at No. 17 Baylor Bears (EPSN, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Baylor - 6

Betting Matchup

Texas has won five of its last six games both SU and ATS following Saturday’s 72-58 victory against Vanderbilt in a non-conference clash as a 2 ½-point home favorite. The total stayed UNDER 136 in that game and it has now stayed UNDER in three of its last four games. The Longhorns opened-up a 15 point lead over the Commodores at the half and guards Eric Davis and Kerwin Roach Jr. came off the bench to combine for 28 points to help pace the win. Texas is averaging 73.2 points a game and it is shooting 43.5 percent from the field.

The Bears have won seven of their last eight games SU, but after failing to cover in this past Saturday’s 83-73 victory against Georgia as 11 ½-point home favorites in another Big 12/SEC showdown they are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four outings. The total went OVER 138 ½ points in that win and it has gone OVER in three of their last four games. Baylor is the top team in the nation went it comes to assists with 20.2 a game and senior guard Lester Medford has led the way with 7.1 assists a game.

Betting Trends

-- The Longhorns are 4-1 ATS in their last five games against a team with a SU winning record and the total has stayed UNDER in 11 of their last 14 conference games.

-- The Bears are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games and the have failed to cover in 10 of their last 13 games following a SU win. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five games played at home.

-- Head-to-head in this Big 12 tilt, the road team has covered in eight of the last 11 meetings and the total has gone OVER in seven of the last nine games played at Baylor.

Bonus Game

No. 13 SMU Mustangs at Houston Cougars (CBS Sports Network, 8:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: SMU -4

Betting Matchup

SMU bounced back from a stunning 89-80 loss to the Temple Owls on Jan. 24 as a six-point road favorite with a solid 80-68 victory over Memphis this past Saturday as an 11-point favorite at home. The total stayed UNDER 149 ½ points in that win and it has stayed UNDER in three of its last five games. The loss to the Owls snapped a SU winning streak of 18 games and the Mustangs are now 19-1 SU with a 12-0 record at home. Their lineup boasts six players scoring in double figures led by senior guard Nic Moore’s 15.7 points a game. SMU is averaging 80 points a game and it is shooting an effective 50.6 percent from the field and 40.8 percent from three-point range.

Houston comes into this AAC tilt with a two-game SU winning streak after dropping its previous four conference matchups. The Cougars are 5-4 SU in the AAC this season with a 4-4-1 record ATS. They knocked-off East Carolina in a wild 97-93 victory this past Saturday in a game that ended as a PUSH. The total went OVER the closing 144-point line and it has now gone OVER in three of their last four games. Houston is averaging 78.6 points a game, but this average has fallen to 71.3 points in its first nine conference games.

Betting Trends

-- The Mustangs have failed to cover in five of their last seven games following a SU win and they are 1-4 ATS in their last five games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has gone OVER in five of their last seven road games.

-- The Cougars are 8-3 in their last 11 home games and they are 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 conference games. The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last five home games.

-- The underdog in this AAC matchup is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings and the total has gone OVER in six of the last eight games between the two.

Top 25 Betting Recap

January 31, 2016

The Week of Jan. 25-31 of the 2015-16 NCAA Basketball betting season is in the books, and today, we're going to be taking a look at each of the Top 25 teams in the rankings and see how they did from an ATS perspective in this go around this past week.

(Results in parentheses represent SU Result/ATS Result)

1) Oklahoma (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Sooners kept their foot on the gas pedal with a win over Texas Tech, and an impressive victory at Louisiana State with a last-second bucket in a hostile environment. Oklahoma validated The Associated Press' decision to keep the Sooner at the top of the heap, and they certainly looked like a championship team. However, they're still just 2-5 ATS over the past seven.

2) North Carolina (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Tar Heels posted their 12th consecutive win, 89-62, against Boston College on Saturday. UNC earned the cover with a late bucket, but they're still just 5-8 ATS over the past 13 outings. Things won't get easier this week with trips to Louisville Monday, and Notre Dame next Saturday.

3) Iowa (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Hawkeyes got well at the expense of fading Northwestern Sunday, running out to a big lead and hanging on for a cover, 85-71. They have hit 76 or more points in six of the past seven games, and the 'over' is 5-2 during the run. Next up will be a home game against a marginal Penn State team, and a road game against an equally marginal Illinois club. Expect to see Iowa remain in the Top 5 for a while.

4) Kansas (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Jayhawks could have rolled up into the fetal position following their loss at Iowa State, but they rebounded with a 90-84 overtime win against Kentucky, snapping a five-game non-cover streak. The signature win comes before a meeting with rival K-State and a trip to TCU before things really get difficult again.

5) Texas A&M (1-1 SU/0-2 ATS)
The Aggies rose to No. 5, highest ranking in school history, and promptly fumbled away a win at Arkansas against a Razorbacks team which had lost three straight conference tilts. They showed how far they have come as a program, however, rebounding with a signature win against Iowa State Saturday in the Big Ten/SEC Challenge. In that win they posted an 'under' total for the sixth consecutive outing.

6) Villanova (1-1 SU/0-2 ATS)
The Wildcats won again Sunday against St. John's, but they failed to cover as a double-digit favorite for the fifth consecutive time. 'Nova will now face Creighton Wednesday, a team they topped 85-71 in Omaha back on Jan. 2, one of only two covers in their past eight games.

7) Xavier (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Musketeers bounced back with a pair of road wins this week, including a very impressive 75-68 victory at Providence Tuesday. As such Xavier could be back on its way into the Top 5. They have a pair of favorable home games against St. John's and Marquette in the upcoming week, so there is no sign of letup.

8) Maryland (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Terrapins routed Ohio State by 35 points back on Jan. 16, but found the Buckeyes to be much improved at Value City Arena Sunday. Maryland got all they could handle in a 66-61, even narrowly escaped with the win and the cover. It was a low-scoring game, something bettors have come to expect. The 'under' is 6-1 in the past seven for UMD, and 9-2 over the past 11.

9) West Virginia (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Mountaineers were humming right along before a date with unranked Florida in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, 88-71. West Virginia has been very good at home, but 4-3 SU in their past seven games away from home with a 3-4 ATS mark. That's something to remember for their road outing against Iowa State Feb. 2, and then again Feb. 9 at Kansas.

10) Providence (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
Providence continues to be one of the most dependable teams in the nation on the road. Too bad that they can't replicate that success at home. They lost for the third time in four home games Tuesday against Xavier, but rebounded with a 73-69 win at Georgetown. They have covered each of their past six road games, going 6-0 SU, too. They hit the road Tuesday for DePaul.

11) Virginia (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)
Virginia capped off a second straight unbeaten week with a trouncing of Louisville Saturday on the road, 63-47. The 16-point win tied for the largest margin over a Power 5 team, and helped snap an 0-4 ATS stretch. They get a breather Wednesday against Boston College before things turn difficult again at Pittsburgh next Saturday.

12) Michigan State (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
Sparty was favored by 29 points in Sunday's game against Rutgers. Big spread? No problem. The Spartans trounced the Big 10's newcomer, 96-62, winning and covering for the third straight game after an 0-3 SU/ATS run from Jan. 14-20. We'll get an idea how much they have improved in two road games at Michigan and at Purdue in the next two games.

13) Southern Methodist (1-0 SU/1-0 ATS)
The Mustangs had six days to rest following their lone loss of the season at Temple Jan. 24, and they looked refreshed in an 80-68 win and cover over Memphis at home. The road gets much more difficult down I-45 in Houston Monday night. The Mustangs topped the Cougars 77-73 in the first meetings, but failed to cover as 13-point favorites at home.

14) Iowa State (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
It was a good week, and a bad week for the Cyclones. They posted an impressive 85-72 win over Kansas Monday, but were overpowered at Texas A&M Saturday in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. One thing which is very consistent fort he Cyclones is that the 'under' has cashed in five straight outings.

15) Miami-Florida (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Hurricanes are hitting a wall, or they're just not a very good road team. They posted a great win over Duke, 80-69, to kick off the week on a positive note. They're 6-1-1 ATS over their past eight home games, but after getting thumped at N.C. State Saturday they are now 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS over their four road outings. They'll be home to Notre Dame Wednesday, but travel to Georgia Tech next Sunday.

16) Louisville (1-1 SU/0-2 ATS)
The Cardinals looked to be piecing things together lately, posting four straight wins heading into their game Saturday. However, they were smoked by Virginia at Freedom Hall by a 63-47 score, slipping to 2-8 ATS over their past 10 outings. It's hard to imagine they were looking past UVA to North Carolina, but that's exactly who is on the horizon next for the Cards.

17) Baylor (2-0 SU/0-1-1 ATS)
The Bears negotiated pitfalls at Oklahoma State, and home in the Big 12/SEC Challenge against Georgia Saturday. While they have won seven of their past eight games overall, they're just 0-3-1 ATS over the past four outings. Things won't get any easier against Texas Monday, and on the road against an angry West Virginia team Saturday.

18) Arizona (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
After a two-game hiccup the Wildcats got well against Pac-12 punching bag Oregon State, 80-63, in Saturday's win. They're now 3-1 ATS in their past four home games. Unfortunately the upcoming week has them at Washington State and at Washington. The Wildcats are 1-3 SU/ATS over their past four road contests.

19) Indiana (1-1 SU/0-2 ATS)
The Hoosiers were tripped up in overtime at Wisconsin earlier in the week, 82-79, showing that they are not quite a finishing product just yet. They were able to rebound with an unimpressive home win against Minnesota, but they failed to cover again, slipping to just 4-6 ATS over the past 10 outings.

20) Kentucky (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Wildcats thumped Missouri by 34 points, and then nearly pulled off an impressive win in overtime before falling at Kansas, 90-84, in Saturday's Big 12/SEC Challenge. As it stands, Big Blue slipped to 2-5 SU/ATS in seven games on the road or on a neutral court. Remember that for Tuesday's game at Tennessee.

21) Purdue (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)
It was a perfect week for the Boilermakers, who pushed past Minnesota despite a non-cover before toasting Nebraska at home as a double-digit favorite. The win over Big Red snapped an 0-3 ATS skid for the Boilers, who have still been reliable for bettors. The 'over' is 6-2 in Purdue's past eight games.

22) Wichita State (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Shockers thumped Evansville in their own barn Sunday, 78-65, flexing a little muscle in the Missouri Valley and continuing to cover spreads. After a shaky start, mostly due to a bevy of injuries to key players, the Shockers are firing on all cylinders with a 11 straight wins and seven straight covers. They're 10-1 ATS during their win streak.

23) Oregon (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Ducks blasted Arizona State in league action Sunday, moving to 21-8 ATS in their past 29 games overall dating back to last season. Oregon has a pair of interesting home games this week, looking for revenge against Colorado Thursday for a loss Jan. 17 in Boulder, while hosting Utah, a team the Ducks handled 77-59 in Salt Lake City Jan. 14.

24) Duke (0-1 SU/0-1 ATS)
The Blue Devils were dropped 80-69 in Miami Monday night in their only game of the week. While it is anything but embarrasing to lose to the No. 15 team in the nation, it remains to be seen if Duke will be ranked in the Top 25 anytime soon. They'll look to rebound at Georgia Tech Tuesday before a home date with N.C. State next Saturday. The Blue Devils can ill-afford another loss.

25) Notre Dame (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Fighting Irish were tripped up at Syracuse , 81-66, on Thursday, but they rebounded nicely with a 23-point win over Wake Forest to get back on track. The Irish are now 5-1 SU over the past six, but they haven't covered in back-to-back games since a 3-0 ATS run from Dec. 2-13.

Preview: Tar Heels (19-2) at Cardinals (17-4)
Date: February 01, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

North Carolina hasn't exactly been challenged thus far in ACC play, but it seems that's about to change just as the calendar flips to February.

The second-ranked Tar Heels' best conference start in 15 years as well as a 12-game overall winning streak are on the line Monday night at Louisville, and the 16th-ranked Cardinals will be motivated to recover from easily their worst game of the season.

This contest kicks off a three-game road stretch for North Carolina (19-2, 8-0), which faces No. 25 Notre Dame on Saturday. The Tar Heels are yet to face a ranked opponent in the league, and the wins have come by an average of 13.2 points with a 75-70 win at Virginia Tech on Jan. 24 being the only one decided by fewer than eight.

They followed up the win over the Hokies with Saturday's 89-62 home victory over Boston College. Coach Roy Williams expects things to get more difficult, and he's also not terribly high on how his team has looked recently.

"Now we are in the process of going into not just the second half ... a bunch of the games are against those teams in the top half of the league," Williams said. "If we play the way we played the last four games, it will be very, very, very difficult to win any of those games.

So we've got to play better, and we talked about that. Even before the game today, instead of putting up some X's and O's up on the board, I said let's play to get better on defense, let's play to get better on offense and let's give the grade A effort and see if we are mature enough to handle this."

Brice Johnson had 17 points and 11 rebounds against the Eagles, while Marcus Paige scored 12. Johnson has averaged 21.0 points over his last three games, and Paige was 4 of 9 from the field after a four-game stretch on which he was 5 of 35 (14.3 percent) for an average of 3.8 points.

"I want you to go to the gym, miss 20-some in a row, then make one and have the whole arena cheer for you, just so you know how it feels," Paige said with a laugh. "I've never missed that many shots in a row in my life, so just to finally get people (cheering), it was very relieving."

North Carolina last started a conference slate with at least nine straight wins on an 11-game run in 2000-01, and it hasn't won 13 in a row overall since winning its first 13 in 2008-09.

The Tar Heels won two of three over the Cardinals last season. It was a tight series with North Carolina winning 72-71 at home on Jan. 10, 2015, followed by a 78-68 overtime loss at Louisville on Jan. 31 and a 70-60 neutral-site win in the ACC tournament on March 12. Paige has averaged 17.5 points in four career games against Louisville.

This meeting won't be that close if Louisville (17-4, 6-2) doesn't clean up its season-worst 32.7 percent shooting mark from Saturday's 63-47 home loss to No. 11 Virginia. When it's shot under 44 percent, Louisville is 1-4 with four of those games coming against the Top 25. Over 44 percent, it's 16-0, though those have all come against unranked teams.

"This game doesn't define us," said Trey Lewis, who was 1 for 6 with four points after matching a season-high 22 in Wednesday's 91-83 win at Virginia Tech. "There's no motivation needed. We got our butts kicked and now we have a big game coming up. It's just time to strap 'em up and play."

The Cardinals have lost nine of their last 11 against top-five opponents, and North Carolina has won five of seven against the Top 25 dating to the last meeting with Louisville.

Preview: Longhorns (14-7) at Bears (17-4)
Date: February 01, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Baylor likes to use an imposing frontcourt led by Rico Gathers to bully its opponents while Texas continues to gradually adjust to new coach Shaka Smart's fast-paced 'havoc' approach.

Big 12 teams with contrasting styles will be on display Monday night when the 17th-ranked Bears host the Longhorns.

Baylor (17-4, 6-2) leads the conference in rebound margin at plus-9.9 while Texas is last at minus-0.3. Gathers is averaging a Big 12-best 10.5 rebounds and has seven double-doubles this season and 31 in his career.

Gathers had 17 points and nine rebounds and Taurean Prince scored 13 in an 83-73 win over Georgia on Saturday. Those forwards combined for 14 of the Bears' season-high 36 free throw attempts.

'I think our guards did a good job of getting the ball inside and just getting the big men going," Gathers said. "Whenever you play ball like that, it opens up for the outside."

Texas (14-7, 5-3) has won five of six after beating Vanderbilt 72-58 on Saturday at home. The Longhorns forced eight turnovers in a first half in which they held the Commodores to 6-of-21 shooting and built a 31-16 lead.

Thirteen turnovers by Vanderbilt were converted into 20 points by Texas, which matched a season high with 10 steals.

'Our guys are trying to play the way we're asking them to play,' Smart said. 'It's a mentality. Some people are born that way, some people it takes a year or two or three years in a program. The key to me, if I could say one word, would be aggressiveness."

Texas struggled in losing three of four after losing center Cameron Ridley to a fractured left foot after a win at Stanford on Dec. 19. Now the Longhorns have picked up steam in this 5-1 stretch that includes two wins over ranked teams.

"What I have seen is they're one of the hottest teams in conference," Baylor coach Scott Drew said. "Coach Smart has really got them playing well as a cohesive unit. When Cameron went down it took a little time to get rolling again. But they're playing great basketball and they have a different style."

Freshman Kerwin Roach Jr. never scored more than 14 points before surpassing that total in consecutive victories. He scored 22 in Tuesday's 71-54 victory over TCU and had his first double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds Saturday.

"He's coming," Smart said. "He's making progress. I'm real excited about him, because he's always worked ever since he got here at his game."

Prince Ibeh notched his second straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while leading scorer Isaiah Taylor chipped in with 11 points.

Roach is a former high school teammate of Baylor's Johnathan Motley, and these two will meet for the first time. Motley is a 6-foot-9 forward averaging 13.0 points on 75.5 percent shooting in his last seven games after he scored 12 in 14 minutes against the Bulldogs.

"It gives us a little added confidence coming into the UT game, so we'll be doing everything we can to win," Motley said.

Each team won at home in two meetings last season.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Arizona Diamondbacks........

3) Braden Shipley, P-- Arizona traded its best two prospects to Atlanta.

4) Archie Bradley, P-- Was 2-3, 5.80 in eight MLB starts last year.

5) Brandon Drury 2B/3B-- Hit .214 in 54 big league ABs last year.

10) Peter O'Brien C/OF-- Knocked in 107 runs in AAA last summer.

11) Gabby Guerrero, OF-- Vladimir Guerrero's nephew struggled in AA LY.

18) Zach Godley, P-- Went 5-1, 3-19, in six MLB starts last year.

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

13) In the last 20 years, there have been 19 individual seasons where a player scored 24+ ppg with 7+ assists a game; of those 19, the only player not to make it to the All-Star Game? Damion Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers.

12) This is how big a rebuilding job Chris Mullin has at St John's; when Villanova was at Madison Square Garden yesterday, they were a 20-point road favorite. I chart teams in 23 different conferences; no one else has been a 20-point home dog this year.

11) St John's/Knicks both had home games at MSG Sunday; Clippers/Lakers both had games in Staples Center; would be interesting to know how many fans paid to see both games. Thats a good day, two NBA games in the same building.

10) Someone said on TV this weekend that when the Selection Committee looks at Syracuse for the NCAA tournament, they'll catch a break by playing much better since Jm Boeheim came back from his suspension. This seems asinine- its not like Boeheim was out with an illness, he missed nine games because his progam broke rules.

Why should Syracuse get the benefit of the doubt because their program cheated?

9) How does Johnny Manziel not have his own reality show?

8) Someone did an anonymous poll of NBA players/coaches, as far as who the best and worst referees are: According tot his survey, the best thee are:

Danny Crawford-Joey Crawford (not related)-Marty McCutchen
Worst three refs: Scott Foster (by wide margin), Lauren Holtkamp, Marc Davis

7) NHL owners must be happy with their business; commissioner Gary Bettman had his contract extended thru 2022 this weekend.

6) Phoenix Suns fired coach Jeff Hornacek last night; it won't help. Phoenix has a bad team and its best player is out for the year. Good players win games.

Brooklyn Nets are 2-9 since changing coaches; Cleveland Cavaliers are 4-1- they were winning before they changed coaches. Will be interesting to see where David Blatt surfaces, whether it is the NBA, college or even a television job. If he did NBA games on TV, how critical would he be?

5) Tom Thibodeau got fired by the Bulls LY after going 255-139 in five seasons, but only 23-28 in playoff games; well, under Fred Hoiberg this year, Chicago is 26-20 and treading water in the East- they're 4-7 in their last eleven games. Not an improvement.

4) NBA banned sideline cameras at midcourt this weekend, a safety issue for refs and players; actually, Lebron James tripped over one last week and tweaked his ankle. If George Amundson had tripped on a cmaera, they'd probably still be there.

3) Tennessee-Virginia Tech are playing football at Bristol Motor Speedway next September, in front of a crowd expected to be around 160,000.

2) Its getting tough to listen to Dick Vitale on TV these days; only reason I stuck with the audio of the Oklahoma-LSU game Saturday was because Brent Musberger was working with him, and I enjoy his work. Vitale has his shtick, and seems to have been thrown off his game by Jay Bilas getting the #1 game on Saturdays now. ESPN's roster of college basketball analysts has taken a hit the last few years.

1) Carolina Panthers are ninth team to get to the Super Bowl with either zero or one loss; the other eight teams went 5-3 in their Super Bowls.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Damion Lee scored 24 points, including two free throws with 8.3 seconds remaining, to help No. 19 Louisville upset No. 2 North Carolina 71-65 on Monday night, ending the Tar Heels' 12-game winning streak.

After scoring just six points in Saturday's loss to then-No. 11 Virginia, Lee lifted the Cardinals to a hard-fought victory over the first-place Tar Heels by making 8 of 12 shots, including consecutive 3-pointers that helped provide a 55-50 lead with 9:35 remaining.

Chinanu Onuaku later added a three-point play to make it 63-55. Trey Lewis made a big layup and then two free throws with 26 seconds left for a four-point lead.

Lee sealed the win by making two more at the free throw line as Louisville (18-4, 7-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) handed the Tar Heels (19-3, 8-1) their first conference loss.

Onuaku had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Donovan Mitchell added 10 points for the Cardinals.

Justin Jackson scored 16 points and Brice Johnson had 15 for North Carolina, which shot just 35 percent from the field and committed 16 turnovers.

HOUSTON 71, No. 12 SMU 68

HOUSTON (AP) - Devonta Pollard scored 23 points and Damyean Dotson added 13 as Houston rallied to hand the Mustangs their second loss of the season.

Pollard and Dotson keyed a 21-4 run midway through the second half for the Cougars (16-6, 6-4 American), which defeated a ranked team for the first time since beating No. 25 SMU in February 2014. The win was the first over a team ranked this high or higher since beating No. 3 Memphis in January 1996.

Nic Moore had 16 points for SMU (19-2, 8-2), which has lost two of its last three. Ben Moore scored 12 points and Markus Kennedy had 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Mustangs shot 8 of 27 in the second half and finished shooting 40 percent, compared to Houston's 55 percent in the second half and 46 percent for the game.

TEXAS 67, No. 15 BAYLOR 59

WACO, Texas (AP) - Connor Lammert had 15 points, including a clutch 3-pointer in the final minute, and Texas won for the sixth time in its last seven games.

After Rico Gathers, Baylor's big man, fouled out and Taurean Prince committed a turnover, Lammert's 3 from the right wing with 44 seconds left put the Longhorns (15-7, 6-3 Big 12) ahead 62-56. It was his third 3 of the game.

Gathers, who had 20 points, fouled out with 1:27 left. Prince had 18 points for the Bears (17-5, 6-3), while Lester Medford added 10.

Isaiah Taylor had 12 points for Texas.

Baylor tied the game three times in the second half but could never get the lead.

Preview: Gamecocks (19-2) at Bulldogs (11-8)
Date: February 02, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

South Carolina's Michael Carrera and Georgia's J.J. Frazier are establishing themselves as two of the SEC's most improved players.

The No. 25 Gamecocks and Bulldogs will witness different versions of Carrera and Frazier than they have seen in the past in Tuesday night's matchup at Georgia.

Carrera is a senior forward who came into this season with a career average of 7.6 points and was at 11.6 through the first 17 games. He is averaging 23.8 points on 54.0 percent shooting in his last four while also pulling down 10.8 rebounds per game.

Carrera posted a second straight double-double with 20 points and 11 boards in Saturday's 78-64 home win over Alabama.

"He's playing right now with a lot of confidence," coach Frank Martin said. "We always knew he was tough, we always knew he'd play stronger than what he looks and now he's playing like a complete basketball player and I'm real proud of him for that."

He'll be unrecognizable to Georgia (11-8, 4-4) after averaging 6.3 points on 26.0 percent shooting in seven meetings.

Frazier is a junior guard who's averaged 7.8 points and shot 36.4 percent in four games against the Gamecocks. He has emerged to average a team-best 16.5 points, including 24.3 on 52.2 percent shooting in his last three.

His second career double-double was an impressive one with 21 points and a career-high 11 assists in Saturday's 83-73 defeat at then-No. 17 Baylor.

"He has really matured as a leader on the floor," coach Mark Fox said. "He had a double-double the other night versus a ranked team on the road with 11 assists and also double figures in points. I think he's a more complete player than he was a year ago, the game has slowed down for him."

These teams have been stingy defensively, with South Carolina (19-2, 6-2) limiting foes to 38.4 percent shooting to rank second in the SEC and Georgia third at 38.5.

The problem for the Bulldogs in consecutive defeats is that they have allowed opponents to shoot 91 free throws to waste their own 50.4 percent shooting.

'Our defense is going to have to improve for us to accomplish anything,' Fox said.

South Carolina seeks its first 20-win season since 2008-09 and first NCAA Tournament berth since 2003-04. It is back in the Top 25 after dropping out a week ago following a 78-69 loss at Tennessee on Jan. 23.

The Gamecocks bounced back with two victories by an average of 12.0 points behind Carrera and Sindarius Thornwell, who totaled 29 points last week.

South Carolina's 64-58 victory at Georgia on Feb. 17 ended slides of six straight overall on the road and five in a row in Athens. Martin and his players pointed to that victory as creating momentum for a strong finish to 2014-15.

"I remember before playing them we were like in a slump and coming into Georgia and us beating them was the turning point, and we had momentum the rest of the season so this year we're going to try to keep up with the same thing," Thornwell said.

The Gamecocks swept both regular-season meetings before the Bulldogs earned some revenge with a 74-62 victory in the SEC tournament quarterfinals.

Preview: Wildcats (16-5) at Volunteers (10-11)
Date: February 02, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

John Calipari entrusts the Kentucky offense to Tyler Ulis because he recognizes when to score and when to become a distributor.

But the sophomore point guard has added plenty of mileage on his diminutive body lately, and Calipari is trying to figure out the best way to handle Ulis' minutes.

Calipari is hoping Ulis and the 20th-ranked Wildcats start strong Tuesday night against a Tennessee team that has jumped out to big leads recently only to come up short down the stretch.

Ulis leads Kentucky (16-5, 6-2 SEC) in scoring during conference play at 19.3 points per game and also tops the league with an average of 6.9 assists over those eight contests. He's also playing an SEC-most 36.8 minutes in that stretch, though.

He scored a career-high 26 points and added eight assists Saturday at then-No. 4 Kansas in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, but he played all 45 minutes and made a crucial turnover at the end of regulation in a 90-84 overtime loss.

Ulis is averaging 22.8 points while shooting 58.9 percent over his last four. He got a bit of a break in Wednesday's 88-54 rout of Missouri by playing 29 minutes, just the second time this season he's played fewer than 30.

"I tried to take him out a couple times (Saturday) and he's begging me to leave him in," Calipari said of the 5-foot-9, 160-pound Ulis. "We're trying to come up with something we're comfortable with. With his weight and size, it's not normal. What I do want to do is play him every minute he can be out there playing at his pace."

Four starters played at least 37 minutes, with Jamal Murray (15 points), Alex Poythress (13) and Isaiah Briscoe (12) also scoring in double figures. Kentucky shot 53.2 percent and is at 53.5 over the last three, but it went 5 of 23 from 3-point range.

The loss snapped the Wildcats' three-game winning streak and dropped them to 2-4 in true road games.

'Our last four games, they've fought like heck,' Calipari said. "Teaching them how to win and how to finish off games is on me. That's my job. Their job is to go there and fight like crazy."

Burying Tennessee (10-11, 3-5) early would be ideal, but the Wildcats know they shouldn't be counted out even if that plan doesn't come to fruition. The Volunteers lost 63-57 at Alabama last Tuesday and 75-63 at TCU on Saturday despite leading both games by at least 14 in the second half.

They also led by 13 in a 92-88 loss to now-No. 8 Texas A&M on Jan. 19 and are one of two Division I teams to blow at least three second-half leads of that size this season.

Those last two defeats followed a 78-69 win over then-No. 24 South Carolina on Jan. 23 that coach Rick Barnes hoped would get them on track.

'We're playing against teams that are going to fight back,' Barnes said. "When that happens, when they start coming back, how do we respond? That's what we haven't done a really good job of.'

Kevin Punter Jr. has been a bright spot with 24.0 points per game in conference play, and he scored exactly that many in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Saturday.

Barnes, a good friend of Calipari's, is trying to turn around the program as Tennessee's third coach in as many seasons after being let go by Texas.

'He is a guy that I've called on many times as my teams struggled, as I struggled, (and said to him), `Talk to me. Tell me what you'd do here. How would you do this?'" Calipari said. 'I'm telling you, he's one of the best in our business - one of the best.'

Preview: Hoosiers (18-4) at Wolverines (17-5)
Date: February 02, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Extended absences from pivotal players haven't prevented Indiana or Michigan from contending in the challenging Big Ten.

Both will have that resiliency further tested when the resurgent Wolverines host the No. 22 Hoosiers on Tuesday night.

Indiana (18-4, 8-1) enters this key matchup tied with fifth-ranked Iowa for first in the conference despite losing James Blackmon Jr. to a season-ending knee injury just prior to the league opener. Michigan (17-5, 7-2) sits one game behind despite leading scorer Caris LeVert having missed the last eight because of a lower left leg injury.

Blackmon's absence hasn't slowed the Big Ten's top offense. The Hoosiers have shot 40.6 percent from 3-point range and averaged 79.7 points with the sophomore sidelined.

Yogi Ferrell has helped fill the void by averaging 19.3 points and hitting 55.3 percent of his long-range attempts in conference play - both league highs - and Indiana has also received a big lift from freshman center Thomas Bryant.

Bryant was the difference Saturday against Minnesota with a career-high 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting and eight rebounds in a 74-68 win. The heralded recruit's inside presence helped the Hoosiers overcome a season-worst 2 of 18 effort from beyond the arc.

"It was one of those games that you have to find a way to win, no matter what," coach Tom Crean said. "And he did a lot of things in the game that impacted the game."

The Wolverines have won four straight and six of eight without LeVert's 17.6 points per game and senior leadership, an area where juniors Zak Irvin and Derrick Walton Jr. have each stepped up.

"Zak is out there telling it like he's on a soap box. He's telling what he believes," coach John Beilein said. "Derrick is like Trey Burke; when he has something to say, we'll know about it through his actions. Necessity is the mother of invention. They have really changed their personalities."

Each has made an impact on the court as well. Walton has averaged 16.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists over a five-game stretch, and Irvin has put up 14.7 points over his last six. Irvin scored 20 in Saturday's 79-72 win over Penn State at Madison Square Garden, while Walton finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Michigan tied a season low with six 3-pointers but ranks sixth in Division I with 10.6 per game - slightly ahead of Indiana's 10.0. The Hoosiers, winners in 13 of 14, also stand second nationally in field-goal percentage (51.7) and third in 3-point percentage (43.2).

The Wolverines have held opponents to 26.4 percent from 3-point range during the win streak, though none of those opponents boasts Indiana's offensive credentials.

Michigan has lost 10 of 12 to ranked teams but has won the last two such matchups at Crisler Center, including last month's 70-67 victory over No. 4 Maryland behind Irvin's season-high 22 points.

Irvin scored 23 in a 70-67 loss at Indiana on Feb. 8, 2015, that was Michigan's fourth in the past five meetings. Both LeVert and Walton missed that game with injuries.

Preview: Mountainers (17-4) at Cyclones (16-5)
Date: February 02, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Neither Iowa State nor West Virginia had much to celebrate on an otherwise dominant day for the Big 12 over the weekend.

Both programs look to put stinging road losses behind them when they square off in an important conference matchup Tuesday night.

Thirteenth-ranked Iowa State and No. 14 West Virginia were two of just three Big 12 teams to lose in Saturday's 10-game Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Cyclones couldn't hold a slim late lead in a 72-62 defeat at then-No. 5 Texas A&M, while the Mountaineers were beaten at their own game in an 88-71 defeat at Florida that drew the ire of coach Bob Huggins.

Iowa State's usually efficient offense was stifled down the stretch by Texas A&M, among the nation's premier defensive teams. The Cyclones were outscored 16-4 over the final 4:04 and were held to 43.3 percent shooting, well below their 50.0 percent season average that's tied for fifth in Division I.

"We weren't perfect offensively but we played hard and competed for the most part," coach Steve Prohm said. "They weren't the better team until the final few minutes. We can take some positives from this."

A return home could help Iowa State (16-5, 5-3 Big 12) bounce back. The Cyclones have averaged 86.7 points while winning 10 of 11 at Hilton Coliseum, including victories over top-ranked Oklahoma, then-No. 4 Kansas and Iowa.

Iowa State has won 18 of its last 20 matchups with ranked opponents at home. That includes a 79-59 rout of the No. 21 Mountaineers on Feb. 14 that completed a sweep of the season series.

West Virginia (17-4, 6-2), one game ahead of the Cyclones, has struggled on the road against Top 25 opponents, dropping 20 of 21 such games.

The Mountaineers haven't been playing their best basketball of late either, losing three of five. They'll also play a second straight game without suspended forward Jonathan Holton, the team's second-leading rebounder who's averaged 12.3 points, 10.3 boards and 70.3 percent shooting in his last three games.

Holton's absence wasn't the primary factor in the latest loss, as the Gators shot 53.1 percent and went 12 of 20 from 3-point range while successfully handling the Mountaineers' press. West Virginia, the Division I leader in steals and turnovers forced per game, recorded 14 takeaways while committing 18 turnovers that led to 21 Florida points.

"We didn't guard and our pressure is close to nonexistent anymore," Huggins said. "We've got guys worried about fouling and guys worried about staying in the game longer."

Iowa State had problems taking care of the ball against Texas A&M, which scored 21 points off 16 Cyclones giveaways. Iowa State is 1-3 when committing more turnovers than the opposition.

The Cyclones have won all three meetings with West Virginia at home and are 5-1 in the series since the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 for the 2012-13 season. They shot 53.1 percent and limited West Virginia to 34.9 in last season's two victories.

Preview: Friars (18-4) at Blue Demons (7-14)
Date: February 02, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

It's been a month since Providence had a game decided by at least 10 points, but DePaul is infrequently one to cause such drama.

The 11th-ranked Friars head to Chicago on Tuesday night seeking a smooth tune-up for Saturday's clash with Big East-leading Villanova while also extending one of their best road stretches in school history.

Providence (18-4, 6-3) emerged from a three-game span against the Top 25 with two wins, including an 82-76 overtime victory at then-No. 4 Villanova on Jan. 24. The Friars gave that game right back two days later with a 75-68 home loss to then-No. 7 Xavier before Saturday's 73-69 win at unranked Georgetown.

Since an 83-65 home win over St. John's on Jan. 2, their 4-3 span has been about as tight as it gets with the Friars being outscored 482-480.

Three of the wins have come on the road, also including a victory over Creighton in addition to beating the Wildcats and Hoyas. Providence is 6-0 on the road - Saint Joseph's is the only other unbeaten team in the nation at 7-0 - and the Friars' seven-game run in true away games dating to last season is their longest since a school-record 10-game winning streak in 1960-61.

"I wouldn't say we like coming on the road," Kris Dunn said. "We're doing a good job on the road. ... We're just a tough team right now."

Coach Ed Cooley doesn't care where his team plays as long as he's got Dunn and Ben Bentil, the Big East's top two scorers. Both players had 26 points against Georgetown while Bentil grabbed nine rebounds. The conference's leading scorer (20.3 points per game) has averaged 27.3 points and 9.3 rebounds over the last three games.

"I'm going to get it to two guys at the end of the game," said Cooley, whose team improved to 6-1 in contests decided by four points or fewer. "We're going to ride and die with these two guys here as long as I got them, and I hope I have them a long time."

But the rash of close games might have as much to do with the team's offensive struggles as it does with two stars inching it over the top in crunch time. Providence has averaged 68.6 points and shot 36.8 percent over the last seven games while hitting 24.4 from 3-point range. Those numbers are down from 76.7 points on 45.6 percent shooting - 33.9 from long range - over its 14-1 start.

The Friars, however, likely have some wiggle room against the Blue Demons having won four straight in the series, with the last three coming by an average of 20.4 points. Last season's sweep came with Dunn averaging 24.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists, including possibly the best game of his career with the guard posting his first career triple-double of 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in an 83-72 home win Jan. 29, 2015.

The Blue Demons (7-14, 1-8) opened Big East play with six straight losses before a 57-56 win at Marquette on Jan. 20, but they've since regressed with back-to-back losses by a combined 35 points. That includes Saturday's 86-65 home defeat to then-No. 7 Xavier.

"It was very frustrating," Billy Garrett Jr. said. "It's just a matter of us fixing our problems. There's nothing new. We've been kind of doing that all year."

The guard at least broke out of an individual slump, scoring 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting after a four-game stretch with 8.8 points per game shooting 28.9 percent and going 2 of 17 from 3-point range.

DePaul is 2-55 against the Top 25 dating to Jan. 8, 2008, though that includes an 82-61 home win over then-No. 20 George Washington on Dec. 22.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Atlanta Braves........

1Az) Dansby Swanson, SS--Acquired in Shelby Miller trade.

2Az) Aaron Blair, P-- Went 7-2, 3.16 in 12 AAA starts.

1) Kyle Newcomb, P-- Acquired from Angels in Andrelton Simmons deal.

2) Hector Olivera 3B/OF-- Cuban defector will be 31 on April 5.

8) Mallex Smith, OF-- Hit .340 in AA, .281 in AAA last season.

12) Manny Banuelos, P-- Was 1-4, 5.13 in six starts in majors LY.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Louisville 71, North Carolina 65-- First half of this game was a brickfest; UNC was 3-17 on arc for the game-- they're shooting 30.2% for the year. No bueno.

12) Two of Louisville's best players this year are Damion Lee and Trey Lewis, a pair of graduate transfers, Lee from Drexel, Lewis from Cleveland State. As an Oakland A's fan, I'm sensitive to big-money teams poaching players from schools with less cash, so this "free agency" that has popped up in college basketball bothers me.

ESPN's announcers didn't seem too anxious to talk about the graduate transfer rule, but I'm wondering what the coaches of Drexel (3-18) and Cleveland State (7-16) think?

11) One of the great lines I've ever heard was back when I was an assistant high hoop coach-- this is November of 1993, I'm pretty sure, after we lost our second game of what would be a very long season. The head coach looked at the players and said, "......when things start going bad, the rats start jumping off the ship."

I'm not doing it justice; but he delivered the line with great timing and disdain, but it underlines one of the unfortunate facts of our culture-- people are frontrunners, and as I start to learn more about politics from watching too much TV, it appears that this may be more true in politics than it is in sports. Someone loses and people are fast to hop off the bandwagon. It is too bad.

10) Donald Trump got beat last night, the headline the front page of the NY Daily News today is: "Dead Clown Walking". When you're cocky and arrogant and then you lose, people take pleasure in piling on. We'll see how this plays out.

Mike Tyson once said: "Everyone's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth." Now we'll see how Trump reacts to figuratively getting punched in the mouth.

9) Weekly update on Showtime's Billions: You watch a show like this and you hear about politics, the less you like or trust people. Just a bunch of weasels.

This week, the main character buys stock in a snack food company that made his favorite snack as a kid, because they changed the recipe to increase profits and now the snack doesn't taste as good. So he buys stock in the ompany, gets two board members fired, one of whom is sleeping with his main rival's father (its a soap opera, dammit).

8) No one told the Phoenix Suns players the team fired coach Jeff Hornacek; how do you run a business that way? There are only 15 players; how difficult would it be for a group text to go out?

7) NHL teams playing on second night of a back/back are 83-114 this year against teams that didn't play the night before. Under is 12-9 (with several pushes) in games involving two teams who were both on back end of a back/back.

6) Brandt Snedeker won the Farmers Open golf tournament Monday; he was the only guy in the field to break par (he played his 4th round Sunday) in the last round, which had an average stroke count of 77.9, the highest 4th-round scoring average on Tour in the last 33 years. Brutal winds made the course really difficult.

5) Golfer Jim Furyk is out for three more months after wrist surgery

4) Duke is out of the top 25 for the first time since April, 2007.

3) Terrible news for UNLV's Ben Carter, who blew out his ACL Saturday night in the loss to San Diego State. Tough guy, a glue guy, hard to replace.

2) Texas 67, Baylor 59-- I think Shaka Smart is little bit overrated; he got the Texas job because of his pressing style at VCU, but because of the roster he inherited, this Texas team is playing at pace #319 in country, very slow. Anyway, Texas is 6-3 in Big X- this was a good win for them. I'm just curious as to how Smart will recruit the next couple years, if he'll try to re-create Havoc and press like West Virginia does.

1) This is 2016, technology is running amok and yet in Iowa, they have an outdated way to choose who wins their state's delegates. It makes no sense, but it is how things are done. maybe at some point, they can join the 21st century. One thing for sure, it'll be four years before any of these politicians step foot in Iowa again.
