Wednesday’s 6-pack:
Six QB’s who started for the Steelers after Ben Roethlisberger retired
:
14-10— Kenny Pickett
10-6— Aaron Rodgers
6-5— Russell Wilson
4-2— Justin Fields
3-1— Mason Rudolph
2-5— Mitchell Trubisky

Quote of the Day
“We have arrived at the moment when a national TV network recommends PARLAYS on the pregame show with a 6-1 return. The worst bet in sports gambling is promoted by celebrity athletes who have no clue on how to gamble as their gaming partner has cash flow problems.”
JT the Brick

Wednesday’s quiz
When the NFL/AFL merged after the 1969 season, which three teams jumped from the NFL to join the AFC?

Tuesday’s quiz
Aaron Rodgers won one Super Bowl in his Hall of Fame career; it was against Pittsburgh.

Monday’s quiz
Kevin Ollie was basketball coach at UConn, before Dan Hurley.

************************************************************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

“Welcome to the most competitive business in the world.”
Bill O’Brien

Fine line between winning and losing in the NFL, and when teams stop winning, heads will roll, whether it is justified or not.

— Mike Tomlin coached the Steelers for 19 years; he went 201-126-2, 8-12 in playoff games. He won the Super Bowl in his second year in Pittsburgh, 17 years ago. He lost the Super Bowl two years after that. Tomlin never had a losing season (he was 8-8 three times) but he also lost his last seven playoff games, and is now out as head coach of the Steelers.

Steelers are first NFL team ever to lose five playoff games in a row by 10+ points.

— Much like John Harbaugh, who got dumped by the Ravens last week; Harbaugh coached the Ravens for 18 years, went 193-124, 13-11 in playoff games, winning the 2012 Super Bowl. Not sure what happened this season; Ravens made the playoffs six of the last eight years, but now Harbaugh is highly-sought after by other teams.

— Los Angeles Chargers fired their offensive coordinator and offensive line coach after they lost 16-3 at New England Sunday night.

— Philadelphia Eagles demoted their offensive coordinator after they lost 23-19 to the 49ers Sunday; they didn’t fire him, he can stay on the staff in a lesser role, but they’ll have a new guy as offensive coordinator next year.

— Denver Broncos are only the third #1-seed since 1970 to be an underdog in this round of the playoffs:

1971 Vikings were +1 against Dallas
2017 Eagles were +2.5 against the Falcons

— Last six years, #1-seeds went 4-8 ATS in the divisional round of the playoffs.

— Weird stat of the Day: Rams coach Sean McVay is 9-5 in playoff games; those 14 games have been against 14 different teams, and this week it’ll be 15 games against 15 different teams, when the Rams visit Chicago Sunday night.

Movie of the Day: Absence of Malice (1981)- A Miami prosecutor leaks info to a naive, but well-meaning newspaper reporter that a liquor wholesaler is suspected in the murder of the local longshoreman union president, the wholesaler’s life begins to unravel.

Paul Newman is the wholesaler, Sally Field is the reporter, Wilford Brimley has a small but important role, as does Melinda Dillon.

Very good movie; anything that Paul Newman was in is worth watching, obviously, plus Sally Field was very good in this, too.

Tennessee 87, Texas A&M 82, 2OTs
Aggies led by 11 points in the first half.
A&M shot 13-43 on the arc, 11-23 inside the arc.
Vols were 31-42 on foul line, A&M was 21-32

Kansas 84, Iowa State 63
Cyclones’ first loss of the year, after a 16-0 start.
Kansas shot 12-24 on arc; they led 44-23 at halftime.
Jayhawks are 12-5 against the #2 schedule in country.

Villanova 88, Providence 82
Villanova led 46-34 at halftime.
Providence shot 74.2% inside the arc; they’re 1-5 in Big East.
Villanova is 5-1 in Big East, tied for 2nd with St John’s behind UConn.

UConn 69, Seton Hall 64
UConn led 35-22 at halftime.
Brickfest: teams combined to shoot 4-33 on the arc.
Huskies have won 13 in a row; they lost by 4 to Arizona in November.

Creighton 86, Georgetown 83 OT
Georgetown scored at end of regulation; after LONG review, hoop was waved off.
Hoyas led by 7 with 1:56 left in regulation.
Georgetown scored 1.29 ppp and lost; that doesn’t happen much.

UNLV 89, Boise State 85 OT
Gibbs-Lawhorn scored 33 points, had six assists.
Rebels are 2-5 in games decided by 9 or fewer points.
Boise State lost last four games, two of them in overtime.

Wisconsin 78, Minnesota 75
Both teams hit a 3-pointer in last 0:05; Badgers hit buzzer beater.
Minnesota led by 11 early in second half.
Wisconsin made 14 of 33 shots behind the arc.

Virginia 79, Louisville 70
Cavaliers never trailed; they shot 14-34 on the arc.
Virginia has won four in a row, 10 of last 11 games.
Louisville star Mikel Brown missed his 7th consecutive game.

Thursday’s 6-pack:
In 19 years that Mike Tomlin coached Pittsburgh, Jets had seven head coaches:
— Eric Mangini 33-48
— Rex Ryan 50-52
— Todd Bowles 24-40
— Adam Gase 9-23
— Robert Saleh 20-36
— Jeff Ulbrich 3-9
— Aaron Glenn 3-14

Quote of the Day
“I’m not going to say, ‘Well, we’re going to take a couple of years to figure this out and then we’ll try to compete. I think you try every year. Some years you have the horses to really get there. Some years you don’t, but you try every year, in my view.”
Steelers’ owner Art Rooney II

Thursday’s quiz
What famous athlete is the all-time leader in assists for San Diego State’s basketball team?

Wednesday’s quiz

Tuesday’s quiz
Aaron Rodgers won one Super Bowl in his Hall of Fame career; it was against Pittsburgh.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

— Three years ago, 10 NFL teams changed coaches after the season; eight of those ten coaches have already been fired.

— Red Sox signed P Ranger Suarez to a five-year, $130M contract; last two years, Suarez was 24-16 in 53 starts for the Phillies. He pitched for Philadelphia for eight years.

— Tuesday, Cardinals continued their house cleaning, dealing 3B Nolan Arenado to Arizona for a minor leaguer; not only that, but St Louis is paying $31M of the $42M Arenado is owed over the next two years.
Arenado will be 35 in April; his OPS the last two years: .719, .666.

— College/minor league sports are off the rails; few days ago, Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola transferred to Oregon. Wednesday, Ducks’ QB Dante Moore announced he’s coming back to school next year, instead of going to the NFL.
Wednesday night, Raiola’s name went back into the transfer portal.
Oy.

— Alabama QB Ty Simpson is going into the NFL Draft; he had NIL offers:
$4M- Ole Miss, Tennessee
$6.5M- Miami…….he turned those offers down.
Jimmy Garoppolo is the Rams’ backup QB; he made $3M this year.

— NBA has games from Europe this week; Thursday, Grizzlies-Magic are playing in Berlin, Sunday, they’re playing in London.

— Wednesday in beautiful upstate New York, it was rainy and in the low 40’s; I go to the grocery store, and as I’m leaving, a 50-ish guy is walking in, wearing a sweatshirt and shorts. I had a parka on over a sweatshirt, and I wasn’t warm. Wearing shorts outside in January in upstate New York is almost never a good idea.

Friday’s 6-pack:
NFL teams to start a season 7-1, then miss the playoffs:
— 2025 Colts
— 2012 Bears
— 1996 Redskins
— 1988 Saints
— 1987 Chargers
— 1975 Dolphins

Quote of the Day
“…….You targeted him, you went and got him, and now it’s all on you to make sure it works around him. I think this is a no-brainer hire for both sides. If I were John Harbaugh, that’s the job I would want. If I were the New York Giants, John Harbaugh’s the guy I would want.”
Pete Prisco

Friday’s quiz
Which NFL team played the fewest amount of games outdoors (4) this season?

Thursday’s quiz
Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn is the all-time leader in assists for San Diego State’s basketball team.

Wednesday’s quiz
When the NFL/AFL merged after the 1969 season, three teams jumped from the NFL to join the AFC: Browns, Colts, Steelers.

*************************************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff on a cold winter night…….

— Dodgers have apparently signed free agent OF Kyle Tucker, who has hit 134 home runs the last five years. He was hampered by a hand injury last year, batting .218 in July, .244 in August after hitting .280 with 17 homers before the All-Star break.

— When I was a kid, one of my favorite TV shows was The Rockford Files, starring the great actor James Garner. It was about a private detective
who lived in a trailer on a beach outside Los Angeles. He drove a gold Pontiac Firebird, the show is still on TV, I think on Peacock, but it ran from 1974-80, my high school/college years.

NBC is re-booting the series, but James Garner as Rockford is going to be a tough act to follow, harder than Tom Selleck as Magnum PI, and that hasn’t gone well. Curious to see who they cast as Rockford.

— ACC is adding a conference game to each team’s schedule next year, so teams have to pare down their non-conference schedules. Virginia Tech is paying James Madison $800,000 not to play them next fall.

— The minimum salary in major league baseball this season: $780,000.

— Back in the day, when Al Davis owned the Oakland Raiders, he would interview some coaches he had no intention of hiring; he just wanted to pick their brain.

This week, Raiders interviewed 30-year old Davis Webb, who is the passing game coordinator for the Raiders’ division rival Denver Broncos. Hmmm……

— Rules changes for the college basketball transfer portal; players will not be able to enter the portal until the day after the NCAA Tournament, and the portal will be open for only 15 days.

This is a drastic switch (and improvement) from 2024, when the portal was open for 45 days and the process began the day after Selection Sunday.
— North Carolina’s basketball roster is earning a total of $14M this season; they’re 14-3 so far, 2-2 in the ACC, giving up 97-95 points in road losses to SMU, Stanford.

— Gonzaga F Braden Huff is out 4-8 weeks with a left knee injury; massive loss for the Zags. Huff is averaging 17.8 points and 5.6 rebounds/game.

— Virginia Tech is 2-3 in ACC games, with losses by 1-1-3 points; their last six games were all decided by 3 or fewer points. This season, Hokies are 4-0 in overtime games.

Movie of the Day: Let It Ride (1989)- A cab driver gets a hot tip on a race horse and wins big, but he can’t stop gambling. If you enjoy going to the racetrack, chances are you’ll like this movie.
Richard Dreyfuss is the cab driver, Terri Garr is his wife, Jennifer Tilly is one of the patron’s in the track’s clubhouse, David Johanssen is another cab driver, Robbie Coltrane is great as the teller who takes the gambler’s bets.
Funny movie.

— South Alabama 91, Arkansas State 87, OT
Ark State led by 4 with 0:50 left in regulation.
Jaguars were 21-30 on foul line, Ark State 12-15.
Ark State shot 13-44 on the arc, 18-28 inside the arc.

— Southern Utah 106, Tarleton State 105 OT

Saturday’s 6-pack:
Some teams who take, on average, the longest 2-point shots:
— Houston (16-1)
— Georgia State (6-12)
— Rider (2-14)
— Louisiana (4-15)
— Texas El-Paso (6-11)
— Rutgers (9-8)

Thought of the Day
Nobody is perfect, and nobody has it easy; everybody has issues. You never know what people are going through. It doesn’t cost anything to be nice.

Saturday’s quiz
Who was the Seahawks’ QB, the first time they played in a Super Bowl?

Friday’s quiz
Arizona Cardinals played the fewest amount of games outdoors (4) this season.

Thursday’s quiz
Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn is the all-time leader in assists for San Diego State’s basketball team.

****************************************

Saturday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

There are seven NFL head coaches who have led more than one franchise to a Super Bowl; was surprised to learn that no coach has ever won a Super Bowl with two franchises.

— Don Shula (347-173-6 as NFL coach)
lost Super Bowl III with the Colts
was 2-3 in Super Bowls with Miami, winning Super Bowls VII and VIII
His grandson Chris is defensive coordinator for the Rams.

— Dick Vermeil (126-114)
Won Super Bowl XXXIV with the Rams
Lost Super Bowl XiX with Philadelphia
He was 6-5 in playoff games, was 15-5-3 as a college coach

— Andy Reid (307-174-1)
Is 3-3 in Super Bowls, 28-17 in playoff games.
Lost Super Bowl XXXIX with the Eagles
Is 3-2 in Super Bowls with Chiefs, 18-8 in playoff games.

— Bill Parcells (191-141-1)
Won two Super Bowls with the Giants (XXI and XXV)
Lost Super Bowl XXXI with New England.
He was 11-8 in playoff games.

— Mike Holmgren (174-122)
Won Super Bowl XXXI with Green Bay
Lost Super Bowl XV with Seattle
Was 1-2 in Super Bowl, 13-11 in playoff games.

— John Fox (141-130)
Won Super Bowl XLVIII with the Broncos
Lost Super Bowl XXXVIII with Carolina
He was 8-7 in playoff games.

— Dan Reeves (201-174-2)
Got to three Super Bowls in four years with Denver, went 0-3
Lost Super Bowl XXXIII with the Falcons, against Denver.
Was 11-9 in playoff games.

Famous birthdays, January 17th:
Preston Pearson, 81
Pete LaCock, 74
Chili Davis, 66
Jim Carrey, 64
Dwyane Wade, 44
Tyler Zeller, 36
Trevor Bauer, 35
Nickell Robey-Coleman, 34
Kyle Tucker, 29

— Dodgers gave OF Kyle Tucker a four-year, $240M contract, $60M/year, which seems a bit excessive. Tucker has 147 career home runs, a career OPS of .865, but he played most of his career in a hitter-friendly ballpark in Houston.

— Mets responded to that by signing IF Bo Bichette for three years, $126M. He hit .311 last year, has a career OPS of .806. Bichette figures to play third base, after being a shortstop up until now, kind of what Alex Rodriguez did when he moved to the Bronx.

— Phillies re-signed C JP Realmuto for three years, $45M; he will be 35 in March, has a career OPS of .774.

— In college/minor league sports, QB Darian Mensah is in the transfer portal, again. After making $8M the last two years at Duke, he figures to land with the Miami Hurricanes. Mensah started his college career at Tulane. Duke went 18-9 in Mensah’s two years as QB.

Word of the Day: Chiseler- A person who cheats/tricks people; a grifter.

— Providence 93, Creighton 88
Friars shot 56.8% inside the arc.
Creighton led 46-45 at halftime.
Just second win in seven Big East games for Providence

— Kansas 80, Baylor 62
Kansas shot 58.7% inside arc, had only four turnovers.
Jayhawks won last two games, by 21-18 points.
Baylor slips to 11-6, 1-4 in conference games.

— DePaul 80, Marquette 75
Marquette led 44-36 at halftime.
6-7 senior Gunn had 31 points for DePaul.
DePaul won last three home games, is 3-4 in Big East play.
Last time DePaul finished .500+ in conference play? 2007.

— Kent State 87, Toledo 84
Toledo led 41-35 at halftime.
Kent State was 26-36 on foul line, Rockets 20-29.
Kent State is 5-1 in MAC, game behind unbeaten Miami.

— Ball State 76, Ohio U 71
Cardinals never trailed, improved to 1-5 in the MAC.
Ball State was 25-31 on foul line, Bobcats 15-19.
Ohio U shot 57.9% inside arc, 4-16 outside arc.

— Dayton 78, Loyola Chi 51
Flyers led this game 31-30 at halftime.
Dayton is 5-0 in A-14, forcing turnovers 25% of time.
Loyola is 5-14 this year, after going 48-22 the last two years.
