40.5— Portland Trailblazers

PLEASE wear a mask when you go out.

Quote of the Day
“In 40 years of coaching college basketball, I don’t think I’ve ever seen more stress on our player’s faces than I have this year.”
Oregon basketball coach Dana Altman

Friday’s quiz
Baker Mayfield was Oklahoma’s QB for three years after starting his college career at which school?

Thursday’s quiz
John Wall played his college basketball at Kentucky.

Wednesday’s quiz
Virginia is technically the defending national champ in college basketball, since they won the tournament two years ago; they beat Texas Tech in the 2019 championship game.

****************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here

13) If the entire NCAA basketball tournament is going to be in the Indianapolis area in March, CBS should hire Maris Valainis to do the lead-in to the show when they release the brackets on Selection Sunday.

Maris Valainis played Jimmy Chitwood in Hoosiers; would be fitting for a tournament being held in Indiana for one of Hickory High’s stars to play a role in introducing the 68-team field.

12) Dick Vitale is 81 years old now; over the last 25-27 years, he has helped raise over $100M to fund cancer research, thru the V Foundation, which came to be after Jim Valvano’s death from cancer in 1993.

Coach Vitale has amazing energy, especially for an octogenarian; he deserves a ton of credit for working so hard to save people’s lives. Thank you, coach.

11) Liberty-Coastal Carolina were supposed to play football on ESPN this weekend; ESPN is having College Gameday in Conway, SC, on the Coastal campus, but then Liberty had COVID issues, and the game was scratched. Not good.

ESPN got to work and BYU was quickly signed up to come to Conway for a 5:30 game on ESPNU Saturday. Two undefeated teams going at it; will the winner get invited to the college playoff?

10) NBA will increase active rosters from 12 to 15 players, because of COVID.

9) UConn 61, USC 58:
— Trojans were 3-19 on arc, had only one guy score double figures.
— Bouknight scored 18 for UConn; Huskies were +11 on the boards.
— Last 10:00 of this game, teams combined to score only 11 points.

8) Florida 90, Boston College 70:
— Gators struggled with Army Wednesday, but they hammered the Eagles here, shooting 62.2% inside the arc.
— One of the big variables this season is how much these teams have/have not practiced; unlike a normal season, teams are going to progress at different rates.

7) This past offseason, two great college basketball coaches passed away, Lute Olson and John Thompson, two guys who both won a hell of a lot of games. Here are their resumes:

John Thompson (596-239)
— All 27 years as a head coach were at Georgetown.
Made it to three Final Fours, won 1984 national title.

Lute Olson (776-285):
— 24-2 at Long Beach State
— 165-93 at Iowa
— 587-190 at Arizona.
Made it to four Final Fours, won 1997 national title.

Two guys who were regulars on TV in the 80’s/90’s. Big loss for the sport.

6) Big week for the Lakers’ accountants:
— Lebron James singed a 2-year, $85M extension
— Anthony Davis signed a 5-year, $190M extension.

5) Houston Rockets dropped from 40-1 to 30-1 to win the NBA title, after they traded Russell Westbrook to the Wizards.

4) Utah 76, Washington 62:
— Huskies are off to a dreadful 0-3 start, scoring 52 ppg, making 14-74 on the arc.

3) Arizona State 70, California 62
— Sun Devils improve to 3-1 by beating their conference rival.
— Bears have now already lost to both ASU, Oregon State

2) This football season, St Louis Cardinals’ pitcher Adam Wainwright formed a “Players Only” fantasy league that benefits not only his own foundation but 31 other charities; Each participant, 32 major leaguers, played for the charity of his choice.

League is down to its Final Four:
Wainwright vs Sonny Gray and Matt Holliday vs Nick Ahmed.

Winner of the league gets $50,000 for their charity. Good for them.

1) More people died each of the last two days than died on September 11, 2001; we need to be careful for the next few months, until there is a vaccine in place. It is truly a matter of life and death; wearing a mask isn’t so bad (I actually look better in a mask). Please wear a mask.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Interesting college football spreads for today:
— Oregon State @ Utah (-11.5)
— Colorado (-7) @ Arizona
— UCLA @ Arizona State (-3)
— Stanford @ Washington (-11.5)
— Fresno State @ Nevada (-6.5)
— Texas A&M (-5.5) @ Auburn

Americans who have died from COVID-19: 276,513
PLEASE wear a mask when you go out.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's Den: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

13) Tough year for high school athletes trying to get college scholarships; how do you get recruited when no one can watch you play? Will there be tryout camps this spring/summer?

Also tough for coaches who need to win to keep their jobs; hard to win without good players. We’ll see how this shakes out once things hopefully settle down some in the spring.

12) When the SEC originally made their football schedule, they left December 12 blank; now there are six games slotted in that day, as teams postpone games because of COVID. The SEC title game is December 19, but now the league has four other games scheduled that day, too.

11) Couple of friends and I were debating the best days of the year to have a birthday; I came up with these three days:
— December 31— Lot of people throw parties, everyone stays up late for you and the next day is a day off.
— January 1— You have the day off, and there are lot of football games on.
— July 4— Good weather, and people shoot off fireworks to celebrate your big day.

10) Over their last four games, Washington’s NFL team has outscored opponents 78-19 in the second half. Alex Smith has provided stability at quarterback.

9) Marquette 67, Wisconsin 65:
— Marquette tapped in a missed foul shot at the buzzer for the win.
— 6-7 freshman Lewis scored 18 points off the bench for Marquette.

8) Virginia 71, Kent State 64 OT:
— Kent State hit a 3-pointer at buzzer to send the game to OT
— Virginia outscored the Golden Flashes 22-5 on the foul line.

7) Japanese pitching ace Tomoyuki Sugano will become a free agent soon; will be the fourth Asian player posted for bidding this offseason. Sugano has been the best starting pitcher in Japan’s NPB since Masahiro Tanaka left Japan seven years ago.

6) Southern Mississippi hired Tulane’s offensive coordinator Will Hall as its new football coach.

5) There have already been nine bowl games cancelled, including the Sun Bowl in El Paso, which had been played every year since 1935.

4) Louisiana 24, Appalachian State 21:
— Ragin’ Cajuns beat App State for first time in nine tries.
— ASU missed a 30-yard FG on last play that would’ve tied game.

3) Going to be lot of basketball on TV Christmas Day; NBA has five games on ESPN/ABC, while there are also four college games from the Big 14 that day.

2) Baltimore Ravens put Robert Griffin III on IR Friday, leaving Trace McSorley as the only QB on their active roster; Lamar Jackson can come off the COVID list Sunday- Baltimore’s next game is Tuesday. Utah alum Tyler Huntley is on their practice squad, if Jackson isn’t activated.

1) Felt terrible Friday reading about Timberwolves’ star Karl-Anthony Towns losing seven of his relatives to COVID-19, including his mother, who passed in March and an uncle, who died two days ago. Towns’ father also had COVID, but thankfully he recovered.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Coastal Carolina 22, BYU 17— This game was put together Thursday morning, after Liberty had to back out because of COVID issues. Was a fun game to watch; unsure how Chanticleers convinced McCall to come play QB for them, but he’s a hell of a player.

BYU completed a pass to the Coastal 1-yard line on last play of the game, but the receiver was stopped short of the goal line, much like Kevin Dyson in Super Bowl XXXIV for the Titans.

12) Indiana 14, Wisconsin 6:
— Indiana coach Tom Allen is the national Coach of the Year. Period.
— Hoosiers lost their QB for the year last week; they win here as a 13-point dog.
— Indiana is 6-1 for the first time since 1993.

11) Missouri 50, Arkansas 48:
— Arkansas scored TD with 0:43 left, got 2-point conversion, took a 48-47 lead.
— Missouri kicked a 32-yard FG at the gun for the win.
— Arlansas led 40-26 with 13:00 left in the game; Mizzou scored 27 points in 4th quarter.

10) Iowa State 42, West Virginia 6— Cyclones clinch their first-ever appearance in the Big X title game; not sure why a bigger $$$ school hasn’t scooped up coach Campbell.

9) TCU 29, Oklahoma State 22:
— TCU QB Duggan threw for 265 yards, ran for 104 more.
— Oklahoma State led 13-0 after first quarter, 16-7 at halftime.
— Horned Frogs won despite turning ball over five times (-4)

8) California 21, Oregon 17:
— Oregon’s loss makes standings in Pac-12 North a muddled mess.
— Three Cal coaches, including the head coach, are Oregon alums.

7) Upsets of the Week:
— Rice (+24) 20, Marshall 0
— Indiana (+13.5) 14, Wisconsin 6
— Eastern Michigan (+13.5) 53, Western Michigan 42
— Stanford (+12) 31, Washington 26
— Coastal Carolina (+10.5) 22, BYU 17
— California (+9) 21, Oregon 17

6) San Diego State 29, Colorado State 17— Aztecs are first college team in last five years to return a kick back for a TD and a punt back for a TD, both in same quarter.

5) Alabama 55, LSU 17:
— Crimson Tide led 45-14. At halftime.
— DeVonta Smith had 7 catches, 219 yards, three TD’s. At halftime.

4) Florida 31, Tennessee 19— Florida QB Trask has thrown 38 TD passes this season, only three INT’s, pretty impressive numbers.

3) SMU 66, Dayton 64— 4-0 Mustangs were down 10 early in second half; by Selection Sunday, this win will look better than it does now.

2) Kansas 65, North Dakota State 61— Kansas outscored the Bison 7-0 over final 3:57 to avoid a big upset. North Dakota State led 8-0 early, came up just a little bit short.

1) Iona 82, Hofstra 74— Rick Pitino gets his first win as coach of the Gaels.
