Pitcher change announced - Michael Pineda, Yankees

NY Yankees vs. Tampa Bay on April 29 at 1:05 PM. Previous Starter: Masahiro Tanaka.

Reds prospect Lorenzen to make pitching debut

CINCINNATI -- The timing's right for Michael Lorenzen.

Right-hander Homer Bailey was placed on the disabled list Monday with a right elbow ligament strain, opening a spot for Lorenzen, the Cincinnati Reds organization's fourth-rated prospect.

The 23-year-old right-hander was scheduled to pitch for Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday, instead he'll make his major-league debut on Wednesday at Great American Ball Park in the series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers.

"We've had our sights set on Michael for some time," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "I think he's mature and ready to handle this type of a challenge. It wasn't a difficult call."

Lorenzen went 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts this season at Triple-A Louisville, with 12 strikeouts, four walks, and 20 hits allowed in 19 innings.

His fastball consistently is around 94 mph and his changeup and sinker are improving.

Lack of run support has Hughes winless for Twins

Phil Hughes has started the season strong, but thanks to the rest of the Minnesota Twins the rightie has yet to post a win. In Hughes' four starts this season he has gone at least six innings in each while posting a strikeout/walks ratio of 22/2.

The Twins have managed to score a meager four runs in those four starts, while being held scoreless twice.

Minnesota hosts the red-hot Detroit Tigers Wednesday.

Rays look to continue winning with Smyly on mound

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to find good fortune when Drew Smyly gets the starting nod as the team has now won the lefties past five starts. In those five games, only one this season, Smyly has only allowed three hits and 1.2 runs per game while striking out six.

Smyly made his return to the rotation this past Friday when he pitched 4.2 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays while posting five strikeouts and no walks.

Tampa Bay will be in Yankee Stadium Wednesday.

Rays to be road team at home vs. Orioles

NEW YORK -- After Wednesday afternoon's New York game, the Tampa Bay Rays were scheduled to visit the Baltimore Orioles.

Instead, the Rays will fly back to Tampa Bay and face the Orioles at Tropicana Field in a road game.

Game of the Day: Wednesday's NBA Playoffs matchups
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brooklyn Nets at Atlanta Hawks (-9, 200)

Series tied 2-2

Deron Williams fought through tailbone and leg injuries in the Game 4 performance and knocked down one of the highlight shots of the postseason when he crossed over behind the back and hit a fadeaway 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down late in the fourth quarter. "I honestly don't even know what happened," Williams told reporters. "I just know the clock was winding down and I had to get a shot off. But it felt good as soon as it left my hand, though.” Williams buried seven 3-pointers and went 13-of-25 from the field to go along with seven assists and five rebounds in the win.

Atlanta dominated the glass 55-40 in Game 4 but could not hit the shots it needed down the stretch. The Hawks shot 52.4 percent from the field and were having their best night of the series from the outside in the first three quarters while building an 82-74 lead but slumped to 13-of-32 in the fourth quarter and overtime, including 3-of-14 from 3-point range. "This is what the playoffs are all about,” Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters. “What we expect is to be challenged, and this is a great challenge for us.

LINE HISTORY: The Hawks opened as 8-point favorites before jumping to -9. The total of 200 has yet to move since opening.

TRENDS:

*Nets are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 Conference Quarterfinals games.
*Hawks are 0-6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
*Under is 5-1 in Nets last 6 vs. NBA Southeast.
*Under is 4-1 in Hawks last 5 games following a ATS loss.

Portland Trail Blazers at Memphis Grizzlies (-5, 191.5)

Grizzlies lead series 3-1

Shooting guard Arron Afflalo (shoulder) missed all five of his shots in Game 4 and backup C.J. McCollum stepped up with his second straight by scoring 18 points. McCollum poured in 26 points in Game 3 and Memphis has been unable to defend him as he has made 16-of-26 field-goal attempts during the last two games. “The first two games, I came out kind of shaky and played like a younger player, making mistakes and not making open shots,” McCollum told reporters. “I just wanted to show my teammates that I could play in a big game and help them out. I was aggressive, trying to get to the cup.”

Memphis saw its chance for a sweep evaporate by blowing a 10-point fourth-quarter lead on Monday and succumbing meekly to the Trail Blazers. Center Marc Gasol scored 21 points and was highly disappointed with his team’s collapse and sharply critiqued his teammates. “We stopped competing and we tried to trade buckets with them, and we played a little bit too fast,” Gasol told reporters. “We did not execute as well as we could have. They took away the momentum that we built and got away with a win.”

LINE HISTORY: The Grizzlies opened -4.5 before getting bumped to -5. The opening total of 191.5 has not moved.

TRENDS:

*Trail Blazers are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 road games.
*Grizzlies are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
*Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.
*Under is 24-3 in Grizzlies last 27 home games.

Nets remain undefeated against the spread in series

The Brooklyn Nets continue to payout for their backers in the playoffs as they are a perfect 4-0 against the spread.

The Nets have been very kind to bettors in the first round over the past two seasons as they have now covered in seven straight Conference Quarterfinals games.

Brooklyn has been dogs in each of their playoff games against the Atlanta Hawks, but despite facing an average spread of +7.5 the Nets have actually outscored their series opponent 394-393.

Brooklyn is getting spotted nine-points when they travel back to Atlanta Wednesday.

Zig-Zag theory cashes again in Spurs-Clippers theory

Bettors that subscribe to the zig-zag theory are now 3-1 against the spread following the San Antonio Spurs' 111-107 win as 2.5-point dogs at the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 5 Tuesday evening.

The Clippers cashed in Game 4 using the zig-zag approach and are in that spot again for Game 6 Thursday night in Texas.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet

April 29, 2015

Nets at Hawks – 7:05 PM EST – TNT
Game 5 – Series tied 2-2

Atlanta went from mid-December through the end of January posting an incredible 24-1 record. In four games as the top seed against the below .500 Nets in this series, Atlanta has lost twice and needs to tighten things up heading back to Philips Arena for a pivotal Game 5. The Hawks failed to cover in their first two home victories, while getting tripped up in a pair of losses at Barclays Center, including a tough overtime setback in Game 4.

Following an 83-point effort in Game 3, the Hawks’ offense woke up in Game 4, connecting on 13 three-point attempts and all five starts scoring in double-figures. However, Atlanta didn’t plan for Deron Williams to have the playoff game of his career as the Nets’ guard pumped in 35 points, which included a 7-of-11 barrage from three-point range as Brooklyn held off Atlanta, 120-115 to cash as 5 ½-point underdogs. Brook Lopez continued to have a solid series for Brooklyn, scoring 26 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double.

The Nets have covered in all four games of this series, but Lionel Hollins’ team finally busted out offensively after scoring 92 points or less in each of the first three games. Obviously Game 4 eclipsed the ‘over,’ but each of the first two contests at Philips Arena finished ‘under’ the total easily with a Game 1 total of 205 (99-92) and Game 2 total of 202 ½ (96-91). After oddsmakers dropped Game 4’s total to 198 and saw the overtime shootout (104-104 at the end of regulation), they have pushed tonight’s total back to 200.

The Hawks are installed as a favorite once again at home in Game 5, as Mike Budenholtzer’s club built double-digit leads in each of the first two victories, but couldn’t cash tickets. Atlanta led by 16 in Game 1 before winning by seven, while compiling a 12-point advantage in Game 2 as the Nets rallied late in a five-point loss.

VegasInsider.com NBA analyst Chris David says backing the top seed from the East is a tough proposition right now, “If you’re basing your bet in Game 5 on current form, it’s hard to argue for Atlanta. The Hawks were the best ATS team during the regular season but they’re 0-4 versus the number in the playoffs. It’s never a smart investment to chase bets and it’s fair to say that we’re seeing some weakness in Atlanta, who hasn’t won a playoff series since the 2010-11 season. More importantly for our purposes, the Hawks are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 playoff games. Brooklyn is by no means a world beater and I’d be surprised if the Nets won the series but grabbing the nine points seems to be the right lean based on Atlanta’s inability to put them away.”

The Nets own an impressive 8-2 ATS record as a road underdog of 7 ½ points or more since mid-January, but Brooklyn won just three of those games outright in case you’re thinking of backing them on the moneyline at +390 (Bet $100 to win $390). This season, the Hawks have put together an 8-4 SU and 6-6 ATS record at Philips Arena coming off a road loss, which includes a 32-point blowout of the Nets in this situation earlier this month.

Blazers at Grizzlies – 9:35 PM EST – TNT
Game 5 – Memphis leads 3-1

Not one team in the NBA has owned another this season like Memphis has against Portland. The Grizzlies won and covered the first seven matchups to seize a 3-0 series lead and look ahead to Western Conference top seed Golden State in the second round. However, the Blazers weren’t ready to pack in their season, as the Northwest division champions rallied in Game 4 to avoid the sweep and knock off the Grizzlies, 99-92 to cash as four-point favorites and send the series back to Memphis.

The Grizzlies erased a seven-point deficit by outscoring the Blazers in the third quarter of Game 4 by a 27-13 count. The Blazers jumped on Damian Lillard’s back for one last stand, as the All-Star point guard scored 12 of his 32 points in the final quarter to give Portland its first playoff win since Game 4 of the second round last season against San Antonio. Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge struggled from the floor on Monday, converting just 6-of-22 attempts for 18 points, but his counterpart Zach Randolph wasn’t much better by hitting 6-of-20 shots from the field for 12 points.

Mike Conley remains out for the Grizzlies following facial surgery in an injury suffered in Game 3, as the platoon at point guard between Nick Calathes and Beno Udrih combined for 25 points in the Game 4 defeat. The big disappointment for Memphis in this series is the play of swingman Jeff Green, who averaged 15 points per game in the regular season but has scored only 36 points total through four games, including seven points on Monday.

Memphis’ domination of Portland is evident with its 7-1 SU/ATS record in the season series, as David says it’s hard to make a case for the Blazers, “Portland showed some pride in Game 4 and to be fair, it was more of a collapse by Memphis. The Grizzlies have dominated the Trail Blazers in the first two games at home and if you believe Memphis will win, then you shouldn’t have any issue laying the points. Since 2011, Memphis has played 22 postseason games at home and they’ve produced a 15-7 record. Against the spread, the Grizzlies have gone 14-6-2 ATS. What that tells me is when Memphis wins, it also covers. If you like Portland to keep it within the number, then I would strongly suggest a look at the money-line of +190 instead of taking the points.”

After covering their first two playoff wins against the Rockets last postseason, the Blazers have put together a dreadful 2-11 ATS record in their last 13 playoff contests. Included in that horrible stretch is six consecutive losses (both SU and ATS) away from the Moda Center, all by double-digits.

Bulls suddenly staggering after up 3-0

April 28, 2015

CHICAGO (AP) - So much for this being a quick, easy tuneup for the Chicago Bulls.

Suddenly, they're on their heels.

Their 3-0 lead over the Bucks is down to 3-2, and if they drop Game 6 Thursday at Milwaukee, this first-round playoff series would really get interesting.

Pau Gasol wonders if the Bulls were ''comfortable or confident or overlooking them.'' He says Chicago ''didn't play with enough sense of urgency.''

No team has lost a best-of-7 series after winning the first three games, so history is at least on the Bulls' side. But they let two big opportunities slip away.

They lost Game 4 on a last-second layup and came up short with another chance to put away the Bucks, falling 94-88 at home on Monday night.

Hawks face pressure, Grizz try to advance

April 28, 2015

Atlanta has to know exactly what Brooklyn is feeling right now.

And that knowledge might be scary.

A year ago, the Hawks were the playoff upstarts, the nothing-to-lose No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs that gave No. 1 Indiana all it wanted in the first round. Atlanta surprised plenty of onlookers by taking that series to seven games before getting ousted.

Now it's the Nets who are flourishing in the no-pressure role. Brooklyn has Atlanta in trouble, and could put the Hawks - a team that won 19 straight games at one point this season and entered the playoffs with a 60-22 record - on the cusp of elimination if they find a way to win Game 5 on the road Wednesday night.

''To win in the playoffs is a challenge,'' Nets coach Lionel Hollins said. ''And it's not something that's for the faint-hearted and it's not something for people that don't compete and don't play hard.''

Atlanta hosting Brooklyn is one of two Game 5's on Wednesday's schedule. Memphis plays host to Portland in a West first-round series, with the Grizzlies holding a 3-1 lead there and looking to advance.

The Blazers, who rallied in the fourth quarter to win Game 4 and stave off a sweep, are still hoping to become the first team in NBA history to successfully rally from a 3-0 series deficit.

''It is game-by-game,'' Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge said. ''We have to bring that same mentality to Memphis, that same intensity to their house. We have to play confident offensively and defensively. If we do that, anything is possible.''

Atlanta, for the first time all season, is under real pressure.

Kyle Korver's broken nose in March was largely downplayed, since he missed just three games. But he's seemed ordinary since returning, and struggled again in the Game 4 loss to Brooklyn on Monday.

Before getting hurt, Korver was poised to reach basically the NBA's holy grail for shooters - the 50-50-90 level. He was shooting 49.6 percent from the field, 50.1 percent from 3-point range, 90.2 percent from the foul line.

Since coming back, Korver is shooting 42 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point land and 85 percent from the foul line. Korver missed all four of his overtime 3-point tries in Monday's Game 4 loss, including three on the same possession with Atlanta trailing by three in the final minute.

The Hawks are 9-10 in their last 19 games, albeit with many of those coming down the stretch of a regular season where Atlanta had very little to play for since the No. 1 seed for the East playoffs was clinched.

''This is what the playoffs are all about,'' Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. ''What we expect is to be challenged. And this is a great challenge for us.''

A look at Wednesday's games, all times EDT:

---

Nets at Hawks, series tied 2-2, 7 p.m., TNT

Joe Johnson is shooting 33 percent and the series is tied, which is either a testament to how well Brooklyn has played of late, how big the struggle has been for Atlanta, or both.

''We're definitely coming together as a unit,'' Nets guard Deron Williams said. ''It's taken longer than we thought, a little longer than we hoped, but it's happened.''

That being said, the Hawks have been here. Both first-round series for No. 1 seeds went seven games last season, with Indiana topping No. 8 Atlanta in the East and San Antonio holding off No. 8 Dallas out West on the way to eventually winning the NBA title.

How even is this series? Here's the combined score so far: Brooklyn 394, Atlanta 393. The Nets have 188 rebounds, the Hawks 186. The Nets have 58 turnovers, the Hawks 57.

---

Trail Blazers at Grizzlies, Memphis leads 3-1, 9:30 p.m., TNT

The Grizzlies are not happy with themselves after not closing out Portland on Monday, blowing a 10-point lead with 8:38 left.

They aren't using the excuse of not having guard Mike Conley, who had surgery Monday to repair a facial fracture after taking an elbow to the face in Game 3. Backups Beno Udrih and Nick Calathes combined for 25 points and six assists filling in for Conley.

''We're not happy with ourselves,'' Udrih said. ''We're better than that.''

The Blazers avoided the sweep thanks in large part to Damian Lillard getting back on scoring track with 32 points, and Meyers Leonard adding 13 points and 13 rebounds.

''We wanted to make a statement to our fans - don't get swept,'' Leonard said. ''Now (we) go on to Memphis, continue to fight and make this a series ... which I truly believe we will.''

Preview: Red Wings (43-25) at Lightning (50-24)

Date: April 29, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

One more game in the first round of the NHL playoffs. One last chance to catch a memorable duel between Tampa Bay forward Tyler Johnson and Detroit goaltender Petr Mrazek.

Johnson and the Lightning host Mrazek and the Red Wings in Game 7 of their seesaw series on Wednesday night. The winner then travels to Montreal for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Friday night.

'This is Game 7. We worked extremely hard to get ourselves in this position,' Tampa Bay star Steven Stamkos said Tuesday. 'No one remembers what happened in Game 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. We have to be a lot better than we have been. They've come in here and beat us twice. We have that mentality we were the best team at home in the league for a reason, and we have to show that.'

Detroit had a chance to eliminate Tampa Bay at home on Monday night, but Johnson collected two more goals to lead the Lightning to a 5-2 victory. Jason Garrison, Alex Killorn and Cedric Paquette also scored as the league's highest-scoring team in the regular season got untracked after being held in check by Mrazek and the Red Wings for much of the first round.

But Detroit won at Tampa Bay in Games 1 and 5, and the teams have alternated wins in the series. Each team has scored 15 goals, as well.

'I'm not surprised in hindsight that we're here,' Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. 'I thought we were going to be good in this series. I thought it was going to be competitive contrary to what the experts thought. I thought we were going to be a real tough out and we are, and I also think we're going to win tomorrow. That's just the way I think.'

The Red Wings will be without Niklas Kronwall after the veteran defenseman was suspended for the game by the NHL for charging Tampa Bay forward Nikita Kucherov late in the second period in Game 6. Kronwall knocked off Kucherov's helmet with the huge hit.

No penalty was called and Kucherov took seven shifts in the third, finishing with three assists.

'I thought it was a good hit,' Babcock said. 'Kucherov was leaning back trying to get out of the way. Kroner's foot was on the ice when he made contact.'

The last time Detroit played in a Game 7, it lost 2-1 to Chicago when Kronwall had a shot by Brent Seabrook go off his leg and into the net in overtime in the 2013 Western Conference semifinals. It will be the first Game 7 for Tampa Bay since it lost to Boston in the 2011 Eastern Conference finals.

Jimmy Howard was in goal for the Red Wings for that difficult loss to the Blackhawks, but Babcock has gone with the 23-year-old Mrazek against the Lightning. The Czech goaltender has two shutouts and a 2.30 goals-against average in his first postseason series.

Mrazek had 23 saves in Game 6, including a spectacular stick stop on Brian Boyle in the second period.

Six of the 15 goals allowed by Detroit have gone to Johnson, who is tied with Vladimir Tarasenko of St. Louis for the playoff lead. Stamkos, who was second in the league with 43 goals during the regular season, has yet to score in this postseason.

Babcock said Johnson has been 'the driving force' for the Lightning in the series.

'He's a competitive guy,' Babcock said. 'He's got good speed. He's competitive defensively. He plays 200 feet.'

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Letdown spot

The Washington Wizards smacked the Toronto Raptors in the mouth, knocking off their higher-seeded opponents in four straight games in the opening round of the NBA Playoffs. The Wizards covered in all four games, winning by an average margin of 14 points including a 125-94 blowout win in Game 4. That series sweep adds to a winning 9-3 SU stretch going back to the regular season, in which Washington is 9-1-2 ATS.

But all that momentum could be cooling like a pie on a windowsill with the rest of the Eastern Conference playoff picture taking its sweet time. The Wizards are waiting for their Round 2 opponents, which will be either Atlanta – if the Hawks can finish off the Nets – or Cleveland. Atlanta is 2-2 in its series with Brooklyn, so Washington is going to be on the back burner for a few more days. Whoever it is, they’ll face a Wizards team ripe for a letdown after such a long layoff.

Lookahead spot

The Toronto Blue Jays are counting down the days until they can jump back across the border. Toronto opened a 10-game road trip with four straight losses heading into Tuesday night, totaling only 11 runs in that stretch for an average of just 2.75 runs per game. The Jays are hitting .271 for 5.6 runs per home game but managing to hit just .220 away from the Rogers Centre.

This road run takes Toronto from Tampa Bay (where it was swept 0-3) to Boston, and then to Cleveland for four games starting Thursday. The Blue Jays run the risk of looking ahead to a return home on Monday and a huge AL East showdown with the New York Yankees.

Schedule spot

NFL odds come out earlier and earlier every year. And while it may not be the sharpest play to tie up your money on games in November and December, you can find some solid value playing early spreads for the first few weeks of the schedule. Like San Francisco’s cross-country hike to Pittsburgh in Week 2.

The Niners have been fade bait since falling apart midway through last year and offseason issues along with the shuffling of head coaches has them dropping further out of favor with football bettors. San Francisco is in Heinz Field as a 2.5-point underdog for an early 1 p.m. ET kickoff – a 10 a.m. start back in the Bay Area - and a tough schedule spot early into the new season.

History on Lightning's side with Game 7 on tap

The home team is 92-65 (.586) in Game 7's in the history of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Tampa Bay Lightning will look to make it 93 wins for the home team and close out the Detroit Red Wings in Game 7 Wednesday evening. The Lightning are presently priced at -185.

Earlier this week, the Washington Capitals became the latest home team to close out a seventh game on home ice with a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders.
