Hitters' wind in Cincinnati Tuesday

According to weather forecasts, wind will blow directly out to centerfield at around 14 miles per hour at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati as the Reds host the Atlanta Braves Tuesday.

Oddsmakers have the Reds as -147 moneyline home faves and the total at 8. Anthony Desclafani is slated to get the ball for the Reds and Michael Foltynewicz is the probable starter for the Braves.

The Grindhouse produces yet another under

The total trend at the "Grindhouse" continued Monday, with the under coming through for the 24th time in Memphis' last 26 games at the FedExForum after falling 101-84 to Golden State in Game 4.

The under is now 4-0 in the Grizzlies and Warriors Western Conference semi final, going under by an average of 9.5-points per game. The under is also 6-1 in the last six meetings overall.

With the series tied heading back to Oakland for the pivotal Game 5, the total is opened at 195.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet

May 12, 2015

Who’s Hot:

Nationals – In late April, Washington was riding a six-game losing streak and sat near the bottom of the NL East. All of the sudden, the Nats have turned things around by winning 11 of their past 13 games, including five straight following Monday’s 11-1 rout of Arizona. Washington has won six of its previous seven contests away from Nationals Park, while cashing the ‘over’ in each of its past five games overall.

Stephen Strasburg has won just one of three road starts this season after Washington compiled an 8-8 record in 2014 when the right-hander started on the highway. Strasburg performed well in the desert in his career, winning two of his last three starts, even though he dropped a 3-1 decision at Chase Field last season.

Dodgers – Los Angeles is turning it on right now after beating Miami with a walk-off homer last night to improve to 21-10. The Dodgers have won five straight games at Chavez Ravine, while owning a 12-3 record in its past 15 games in the favorite role. Don Mattingly’s team has opened up a five-game advantage over the Padres in the NL West heading into tonight’s action, while the Dodgers are 4-1 to the ‘over’ in Game 2’s of a series this season.

Los Angeles sends out right-hander Mike Bolsinger to the mound, as he picked up a no-decision in his Dodgers’ debut on August 23 in a 3-2 loss to San Francisco in spite of allowing one earned run in 5.2 innings of work. Dating back to last season, Bolsinger is winless in his last eight starts, which includes an 0-7 team record with Arizona since April 29, 2014.

Who’s Not:

Rockies – Colorado began the season on fire at 7-2, but that seems like a long time ago as Walt Weiss’ is currently on a 4-15 slide the last 19 games. The Rockies have dropped nine straight, including a 1-8 record away from Coors Field since beginning the campaign with an incredible 6-0 road record. Seven times during this nine-game skid, Colorado has allowed at least five runs, as the ‘over’ has cashed six times in this stretch.

Kyle Kendrick tossed seven scoreless innings on opening day at Milwaukee in a 10-0 victory. Since then, the Rockies are 1-4 in Kendrick’s last five starts, while allowing at least six earned runs four times. The ‘over’ has profited in Kendrick’s outings, going 5-1, including a perfect 4-0 mark away from Coors Field.

Athletics – Is the “Moneyball” concept working in the East Bay anymore? Oakland has lost six consecutive games, including a 5-4 defeat to Boston on Monday night in extra innings. To make matters worse, the A’s have dropped eight of their last nine games at O.Co Coliseum, while hitting the ‘over’ in 12 consecutive home contests.

Drew Pomeranz is winless in his last five starts for Oakland after not allowing a run in seven innings of his season debut against Seattle. The Athletics’ southpaw hasn’t lasted past the fifth inning in his past five trips to the mound, but four of those losses came on the road, while each of his last three have come by one run each.

The Indians open a three-game set against the Cardinals on Tuesday and they bring a 9-0 ‘over’ streak into this series. The total opened at 8 runs and has dropped to 7 ½ at a few betting outfits.

Minnesota has seen the ‘over’ go 5-0 in its last five games. The Twins visit the Tigers on Tuesday and the total is hovering around 8 ½ runs.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Tuesday, May 12

Cavaliers got 14-13 points off bench from JR Smith in splitting pair in Chicago- James was 10-30 in Game 4 but hit winning shot after coach Blatt almost screwed things up by trying to call timeout he didn't have. Bulls shot 36% from floor, led by 11 but lost chance to go up 3-1 in the series. Bulls won 10 of last 14 games overall with six of last nine staying under total; Chicago made 10-18 from arc in Game 1, only 22-62 in last three games. Cleveland had only four fast break points in Game 4.

Heart-check time for the Rockets, who lost by 25-33 points in pathetic showing in LA over weekend; do they want to keep playing? Didn't look like they did while being outscored 43-25 in third quarter Sunday, with Clippers blowing them out badly. Will Houston keep fouling Jordan, who is +76 in this series (Rockets are +8 when he is off floor)? This game is a simple one; how badly does Houston want to compete, if at all? Seven of last eight Clipper games went over the total.

Game of the Day: NBA Tuesday playoff matchups
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers (-5.5, 191)
Series is tied at 2-2

Chicago and Cleveland have traded dramatic game-winning shots in the past two games and the Cavaliers have the homecourt advantage when they meet the Bulls in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series. Chicago’s Derrick Rose banked in the decisive shot in Game 3 and Cleveland’s LeBron James answered with the game-winner in Game 4 to tie the series at two games apiece.

James sprained his left ankle in Sunday’s game but won’t miss any time while point guard Kyrie Irving continues to be hampered by injuries – first a sore right foot and then being diagnosed on Monday with tendinitis in his left knee. Irving plans to play despite being an inferior shadow of himself while the Bulls will likely be without power forward Pau Gasol (hamstring) for the second consecutive contest. Chicago missed a big opportunity to take a 3-1 lead when it struggled in the fourth quarter and Cleveland rallied for the victory. “We just got to be a lot smarter with the lead,” Bulls forward Taj Gibson told reporters. “Going into the fourth we had a good margin. We just blew it.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Cavs as 5-point faves but have since moved that number to -5.5.

INJURY REPORT: Chicago - T. Gibson (questionable), P. Gasol (doubtful). Cleveland - K. Irving (probable), L. James (probable), K. Love (out for playoffs), A. Varejo (out for playoffs).

ABOUT THE BULLS: Chicago led by 11 points late in the third quarter of Game 4 before falling apart on the offensive end and letting the game get away. “Just too many duds for offensive possessions,” forward Mike Dunleavy told reporters. “We’ve had issues with that all year. Especially here in the playoffs, our ball movement has been slowing us down, and we kind of get stagnant.” One guy thriving is Rose, who has scored 30 or more points in back-to-back games and is averaging 25 points in the series.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: Irving is 5-for-23 shooting over the last two games, and his 30-point performance in Game 1 seems like it happened ages ago. “I’d rather give 30 percent, 40 percent rather than give none at all,” Irving told reporters. “I just literally can’t do it. I can’t sit on the bench and be hurt and be OK with that. And still, I still know I can be effective.” James expressed surprise that he was able to finish Game 4 – a contest that concluded with him overruling coach David Blatt’s plan to have him in-bound the ball on the play and instead receiving the ball and knocking down the decisive shot.

TRENDS:

*Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
*Under is 5-2 in Bulls last 7 overall.
*Under is 5-2 in Cavaliers last 7 overall.
*Bulls are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.

Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets (+2.5, 219)
Clippers lead series 3-1

The Los Angeles Clippers look to advance to the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history when they visit the Houston Rockets in Game 5 of the semifinal series. Los Angeles has pounded Houston by an average of 29 points over the last two games to take a 3-1 lead while thoroughly demoralizing the Rockets.

Houston has no answer on the defensive end as the Clippers are averaging 119.5 points in the series after posting a 128-95 victory on Sunday. “This is the ultimate adversity right now,” Rockets guard James Harden told reporters. “We’ve got Game 5 back at the house and it’s really win or go home. Our backs are against the wall and we’ve got to show up.” The Clippers are the first team to win back-to-back games in a playoff series by at least 25 points since the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001 and are rolling on all cylinders. “I think we realize as a team what we’re capable of when we play the right way,” power forward Blake Griffin told reporters. “It’s just a matter of coming out and playing the right way.”

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: The Rockets opened -1 but have hopped the fence to +2.5 as of this writing.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: The hamstring injury to Chris Paul was thought to be a deterrent to Los Angeles winning the series, and it split two games without him before dominating the two he has played. Paul has only had to play an average of 24.5 minutes due to the two routs and now coach Doc Rivers is less than concerned with his point guard’s health and more interested in his team continuing its strong play. “I think right now, honestly, they just have great focus,” Rivers told reporters. “They’re not thinking about a lot of stuff, but doing their jobs and trying to win the game.”

ABOUT THE ROCKETS: Standout guard James Harden scored a quiet 21 points in Game 4 and has failed to be a difference-maker despite a 24.5 average in the four games. The runner-up in MVP balloting has been bottled up for long stretches by the Clippers and is growing more and more frustrated as the scores get out of hand. “We’re not really moving,” Harden told reporters. “We’re not really moving on the offensive end. We’re pretty much stagnant, so it makes it easier for them to kind of load up and play their normal defense.”

TRENDS:

*Clippers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
*Over is 10-2 in Rockets last 12 home games.
*Over is 5-0 in Clippers last 5 overall.
*Clippers are 16-4-1 ATS in their last 21 road games.

LeBron James dealing with ankle issue ahead of Game 5

LeBron James will play in Game 5 of Cleveland's conference semifinals series with Chicago Tuesday, but The King himself is even admitting he won't be at 100 percent.

James turned his left ankle after landing on Derrick Rose's foot in the third quarter of Sunday's game but stayed on the floor. He told reporters Monday he'll be receiving plenty of treatment on his ankle prior to tip-off in the next matchup.

Cleveland isn't catching any breaks on the injury front, as the squad is playing without power forward Kevin Love (who was injured in the first-round against Boston). Star point guard Kyrie Irving underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed tendinitis in his left knee on top of a sprained right foot.

Oddsmakers have tabbed the Cavs as 5.5-point home favorites for the clash.

Bulls at Cavaliers (-5 ½, 191) – 8:05 PM EST – TNT
Game 5 – Series tied 2-2

The two games in Cleveland to begin this series were no contest with the Bulls and Cavaliers splitting. When the venue shifted to the United Center in Chicago, both nail-biters were decided at the buzzer with Derrick Rose winning Game 3 and LeBron James clinching a Game 4 victory on Sunday to even up the Eastern Conference semifinals at 2-2.

Cleveland staved off Chicago, 86-84 to avoid a 3-1 series hole as James drilled a left corner jumper at the buzzer. The Cavs failed to cash as three-point favorites, the third time David Blatt’s team hasn’t covered in this series. James struggled again from the floor by shooting 10-of-25, but finished with a team-high 25 points and 14 rebounds. Kyrie Irving felt the effects of tendinitis in his left knee, scoring 12 points on just 2-of-10 shooting, while backcourt mate Iman Shumpert was held to five points.

The Bulls almost managed a victory in spite of Pau Gasol being sidelined with a hamstring injury, as his status is up in the air for Game 5. Only two members of the Bulls broke the double-digit barrier with Rose (31) and Jimmy Butler (19) combining for more than half of Chicago’s points. The Bulls were outscored from the free throw line, 23-11, while Mike Dunleavy and Nikola Mirotic combined to shoot 3-of-16 from the floor.

Since 2013, home teams own a solid 9-4 SU and 7-6 ATS record in Game 5’s of a playoff series tied at 2-2. Cleveland is playing in this situation for the first time since the 2010 conference semifinals, when the Cavs were steamrolled by the Celtics in Game 5 at home, 120-88. The last time the Bulls played in a Game 5 with the series tied at 2-2 came back in 2011, but Chicago was at home as it took care of Atlanta, 95-83.

VegasInsider.com NBA analyst Chris David weighs in on tonight’s Game 5 showdown, “With the loss of Kevin Love for Cleveland, most pundits believed that Chicago’s frontcourt had a big edge in this series but that hasn’t been the case. Joakim Noah looks shot and his postseason numbers have been at all-time lows. Offensively, he reminds me of Ben Wallace, just an inept player that shouldn’t touch the ball at all. Along with Noah’s struggles, the Gasol factor is huge for the Bulls, especially on offense. During the regular season, the veteran missed four games and the team went 2-2 in his absence. More importantly, the club was held to less than 90 points in three of the games.”

Chicago put together a solid 7-2 SU and 6-3 ATS record this season on the road off a home loss which included victories over the Clippers and Warriors. However, one of those losses came at Cleveland in mid-January, 108-94 as 4 ½-point underdogs. Tom Thibodeau’s club has cashed in four of their last five opportunities in the underdog role, but hasn’t shot nearly as well since knocking down 50% of its shots in the opener by shooting below 40% in the past three games.

From a totals perspective, David expects another slugfest between these division rivals, “Oddsmakers sent out an opening total of 192 for Game 5 and that number has already been knocked down to 191 at most shops. The ‘over/under’ has gone 2-2 in the first four games and there have been a few close calls that could’ve easily reversed a couple of those results. I’d lean ‘under’ in Game 5 based on Gasol’s health and the inconsistent scoring bursts for each team. It’s hard to bank on an ‘over’ ticket when you have the pair combining for numbers in the low forties and even thirties in a quarter.”

Clippers (-2 ½, 218) at Rockets – 9:35 PM EST – TNT
Game 5 – Los Angeles leads 3-1

The Clippers can become the first team to advance to the conference finals with a victory tonight at the Toyota Center, while point guard Chris Paul is looking get past the second round for the first time in his nine-year career. Los Angeles cruised past Houston in two games at Staples Center, topped off by a 128-95 rout in Game 4 to capture the cover as 6 ½-point favorites and commanding 3-1 series advantage.

The Rockets led the Clippers, 33-30 after one quarter on Sunday night, but Houston’s offense slowed down in the final 36 minutes, while L.A. scored 73 points in the second and third quarters combined. A point of contention during this postseason is the “Hack-A-Shaq” or in this series, the “Hack-A-Jordan,” which is basically fouling Clippers’ center DeAndre Jordan on nearly every possession to put him on the free throw line in spite of shooting 42% on the season. Jordan attempted 34 free throws in Game 4, converting just 14, while the Clippers went 37-of-63 from the charity stripe.

Houston’s defense continued to get diced up during this postseason, allowing at least 108 points seven times in nine games. The ‘over’ is 7-2 in nine playoff contests, including a perfect 4-0 mark against the Clippers. Kevin McHale’s team has shot below 42% from the floor in the past three games, while Josh Smith has been a non-factor off the bench in this series scoring just 25 points after averaging 17.4 ppg in the Dallas series.

The Clippers hope to wrap things up in Houston, but David says to look at betting the total in Game 5, “I’d advise most bettors to pass on the side in Game 5 and just bang the ‘over’ again. After watching the ‘under’ cash in the four regular season meetings between the pair, the ‘over’ is 4-0 in this series and I’m surprised we haven’t seen more of an adjustment on the total. Houston’s defense has been horrendous in the playoffs and the constant hacking approach only hurts ‘under’ bettors. The only way this game stays below the total is if it’s a tight game and I don’t see that happening based on the first four results.”

The Rockets own a strong 6-2 ATS record as a home underdog this season, although four of those covers came with Dwight Howard sidelined. The Clippers have put together a 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS record on the road this postseason, but have been listed as an underdog each time. Last year in the opening round against the Warriors, the Clippers were favored three times on the highway and failed to cover each time.

CHICAGO BULLS (56-36) at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (59-31)

NBA Playoffs
Eastern Conference - Semifinals
Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Cleveland -5.5, Total: 191

The Cavaliers look to take their first lead in the series when they host the Bulls for Game 5 on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers had their backs against the wall in Game 4, as they were looking to avoid facing a 3-1 deficit in Game 5. Cleveland played a great game defensively and would end up winning 86-84 as a 3-point road favorite. The team held the Bulls to just 36.0% shooting from the field and it will need to play with the same type of intensity on the defensive end on Tuesday.

This series now shifts to Cleveland, where the Cavaliers have won three of their past four games against the Bulls SU but just two of those four ATS. Chicago is 32-17 ATS off a home loss over the past three seasons, but they now face a Cavaliers team that is 13-4 ATS after five straight games forcing an opponent to commit 14 or less turnovers over the past two seasons.

PF Pau Gasol (Hamstring) is doubtful for the Bulls in this game and PF Taj Gibson (Knee) is questionable. Both SF LeBron James (Ankle) and PG Kyrie Irving (Leg) will play for the Cavaliers, who are without PF Kevin Love (Shoulder) and C Anderson Varejao (Achilles) for the remainder of the playoffs.

The Bulls had control of this series heading into Game 4, but now find themselves tied and without home court advantage. They’ll need to win another game in Cleveland this series or they will not be advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals. If the Bulls are going to steal Game 5 then PG Derrick Rose (21.4 PPG, 6.5 APG, 4.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG in playoffs) is going to need to continue to play at a high level. Rose is averaging 30.5 PPG, 5.5 APG and 4.5 RPG over the past two games. He looks as fresh as ever and has benefited from attacking an injured Kyrie Irving on both ends of the floor.

SG Jimmy Butler (22.6 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 3.4 APG, 2.8 SPG in playoffs) must also play well for this team to win. Butler is averaging 19.5 PPG, 6.5 RPG and 4.0 SPG over the past two games. He has not shot the ball well, going just 15-for-38 from the field but his defense has stood out. He has done a solid job of defending LeBron James and that takes a lot of energy and commitment.

C Joakim Noah (5.5 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.2 BPG in playoffs) had eight points, 15 rebounds and a block in Game 4, but he is shooting just 38.2% from the field in the postseason. He needs to start making some shots around the hoop or he will continue to really hurt this team offensively. With both Gibson and Gasol banged up or not playing,

PF Nikola Mirotic (5.1 PPG, 3.0 RPG in playoffs) could be counted on to play big minutes. He has not played much in the postseason, but he can space the floor and keep the Cavaliers’ big men on edge with his ability to score.

The Cavaliers desperately needed a win in Game 4 and SF LeBron James (26.5 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 7.8 APG, 2.0 SPG in playoffs) came through for his team, hitting a buzzer beater from deep in the corner to win the game. James has struggled with his shot, going just 18-for-55 over the past two games, but he is still averaging 26.0 PPG, 11.0 APG, 11.0 RPG and 1.5 BPG in those contests. Jimmy Butler is giving him a lot of trouble, but James will need to continue to attack the basket in order to get himself going.

PG Kyrie Irving (20.9 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.4 SPG in playoffs) has been really banged up this series and is averaging just 11.5 PPG over the past two contests. He is struggling to guard Derrick Rose and has been ineffective offensively. If he can’t find a way to impact the game then it will be tough for the Cavaliers to advance.

SG J.R. Smith (11.0 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 1.5 SPG in playoffs) has shot extremely well since returning from his suspension, averaging 13.5 PPG on 50% shooting from the outside over the past two games. He is not taking bad shots and will need to continue to provide a spark for Cleveland.

C Timofey Mozgov (9.6 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 2.5 BPG in playoffs) had 15 points, nine boards, three assists and three blocks in 39 minutes of action on Sunday. He must continue to be a force around the basket for the Cavs.

Tough to Repeat History

May 11, 2015

The NBA playoffs are in full swing, which means overall the better teams are battling each other. This is different from the regular season when many nights great teams are playing bad teams and bad teams are playing worse one. Astute sports bettors should pay very careful attention to blowouts.

For instance, after losing Game 1 at the Clippers last month, 107-92, a very different defending champion Spurs team showed up on the road in Game 2, a 111-107 victory as a 'dog. Two games back-to-back, both at the Staples Center and both featuring the same team, but very different results.

A year ago after losing Game 4 at the Warriors, 118-97, those same Clippers put their game faces on at home the next game, winning and covering, 113-103. After losing Game 1 at the Lakers three years ago, 103-88, the Nuggets covered in a close one in Game 2, 104-100, by changing strategy and going uptempo in the second half. They got beat on the glass in the first game, but showcased more low-post hustle in Game 2 where they outrebounded the taller Lakers.

Overall, blowouts are less expected this time of the year. Oddsmakers are anticipating that the majority of teams want to be here and will play all out for 48 minutes keeping things relatively close.

Players have pride and want to give a better effort that next game, especially after getting embarrassed on national TV the previous game with the whole country watching, especially the deeper you go in the postseason. Tim Duncan was the hero in against the Clippers last month in Game 2, exploding for 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Other times coaches will make adjustments, or motivation can spur a team in a bounce-back role, as well as the fact that they simply had a bad game. Two years ago the Hawks/Pacers series was a good example. Indiana destroyed Atlanta in the first two games, 107-90 and 113-98, only to get blown out in Game 3, a 90-69 Hawks rout. What happened in Game 2 meant nothing in predicting Game 3. It wasn’t just home court that turned the trick but some subtle changes. The Hawks changed up their lineup -- inserting 7-footer Johan Petro at center and bringing 3-point specialist Kyle Korver off the bench -- after getting manhandled on the road. With more favorable matchups and a lot more energy, Atlanta looked like a different team.

Playoff teams have some talent or star players, which also makes closer, more competitive games likely, especially as the playoffs move along. Still, one-sided games can happen for a variety of reasons. A few years ago the Spurs positively trashed the Kings in Game 1, 122-88. The stats on the game were frightening, with San Antonio shooting 57% and holding the Kings to 39%, while winning the battle of the boards, 51-32.

However, a funny thing happened in Game 2: the Kings showed up. They showed up with a vengeance, too, taking the Spurs to overtime before a wild 128-119 loss, though the angry 'dog still covered. Public perception can be such that many were thinking the Spurs were going to destroy the Kings even worse in Game 2. However, the veteran Kings were embarrassed and angry. A very different team showed up for Game 2, one that was motivated by the blowout.

The point is, don't easily dismiss teams that get routed. If they have talent, are well coached, or have strong leadership, they can bounce back and look like a very different team the next game. Another factor to consider is defense. Many teams that make the postseason know how to play defense and in a blowout loss, perhaps a team simply had a bad defensive game. Or, the opponent was doing something that they couldn't adjust to. Though after watching game films, adjustments are made, which is why they can look very different.

Even handicappers have to learn not to over-analyze certain situations. The important point is not too read too much into a single, one-sided game. The playoffs only increase competitive fire and passion with teams facing each other over and over again, making adjustments and revenge spots even more acute.

One season, the Celtics danced all over the Pacers in a 102-82 Game 1 rout. Boston players made foolish comments after the game about how they were already thinking about advancing to the next round! In Game 2, a very different Indiana team showed up in an 82-79 win as a road underdog. They eventually won the series, too. Every 'dog can have his day in the NBA playoffs, so be careful: one-sided blowouts can be very different the next encounter.

LeBron, Irving both nursing injuries

May 11, 2015

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) - Cavaliers stars LeBron James and Kyrie Irving both underwent treatment for injuries as they prepared for Tuesday's Game 5 against Chicago.

James rolled his left ankle in the third quarter of Sunday's Game 4 win. He battled through the injury before hitting a game-winning shot at the buzzer to even the series 2-2. James said he watched several replays of him turning his ankle over and was shocked he was able to finish the game.

Irving underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed tendinitis in his left knee. He's already dealing with a sprained right foot, an injury he sustained in Game 2 in the first round against Boston.

Irving expressed frustration at not being at 100 percent, but says there's no way he can sit out and will ''do whatever I can for my teammates.'' Irving has had injuries before but never to both legs at the same time.

Preview: Canadiens (50-22) at Lightning (50-24)

Date: May 12, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Hold the pep talks, motivational ploys and all the statistics that support Tampa Bay feeling good about its chances of closing out Montreal in the second round of the NHL playoffs.

The resilient Canadiens have won two straight to trim a 3-0 deficit to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series. And the suddenly reeling Lightning said it is time to match the opposition's desperation and finish the job.

Game 6 is Tuesday night at Amalie Arena, where Tampa Bay compiled the league's best home record during the regular season. Game 7, if necessary, would be played in Montreal on Thursday.

'We just have to have the belief that if we play the way we know we can that we're going to win,' Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said after practice Monday.

'Just don't play scared,' Stamkos added. 'Don't be afraid to lose.'

The Canadiens have won five of their past six games when facing elimination and reject the notion that there's more pressure on them to even the series than Tampa Bay to end it and avoid having to get back on a plane and play Game 7 on the road.

'For sure, they've got more pressure. We've been there,' Montreal coach Michel Therrien said, noting his team built a 3-0 lead over Ottawa in the first round, then dropped Games 4 and 5 before finishing off the Senators in six games.

'You get a three-game lead, and you've got pressure to close. The more it goes, the more they feel that pressure,' Therrien added. 'The fourth one is the toughest one because you're meeting a team that is really desperate.'

The Canadiens are trying to become the fifth team in NHL history to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a postseason series.

They won Game 4 in Tampa, then took Game 5 at home to stave off elimination again and bring the Eastern Conference semifinal matchup back to Florida.

'We feel good about playing these type of games,' Therrien said. 'You look at our record the last two years when we've had our backs against the wall. It's almost like it's where we perform the best. (Tuesday) for us won't be any different.'

The Lightning have shown an ability to overcome adversity, too. They trailed Detroit 3-2 in the opening round, won Game 6 on the road and returned home to beat the Red Wings in Game 7.

And there's reason to be confident, too, they can complete the job against the Canadiens, considering Tampa Bay's history of success against Montreal goaltender Carey Price, a finalist for league MVP.

The Lightning went 5-0 against Montreal during the regular season before winning the first three games of this series for an eight-game winning streak over Price.

The Canadiens' goalie has been outstanding in helping his team get back in the series, however Tampa Bay expects to create plenty of scoring opportunities.

'It's not just one guy who's going to be able to carry a team, but he's been kind of an X-factor for them for a number of years, and they have a lot of confidence in him,' Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said.

'For us, we've had success against Carey Price. He to us is not a mental block because we've played them so many times in the last couple of years, and we look back and his numbers against the Tampa Bay Lightning are very pedestrian compared to the rest of the teams,' Cooper added. 'Now that doesn't mean he's any less of a goaltender. We've just found a way to have some success.'

The Lightning, though, will be without right wing Ryan Callahan, who underwent an emergency appendectomy Monday after experiencing abdominal pain earlier in the day. He had three assists in Tampa Bay's 12 postseason games but has a team-high plus-7 rating.

A closer look at the only game on the NHL playoff schedule Tuesday night:

Canadiens at Lightning, Tampa Bay leads series 3-2, 7:30 p.m., NBC Sports Network

BACK TO FORM

Tampa Bay doesn't feel it has played very well since a 6-2 road victory in Game 2. They won Game 3 on Tyler Johnson's goal with 1.1 seconds remaining, were blown out 6-2 at home in Game 4 and were not happy with the way they performed before the third period of a 2-1 loss in Game 5 on Saturday. Forward Brenden Morrow said the 'law of averages' are that the team's 'A' game will resurface soon, hopefully Tuesday.

'We still believe our team's best hockey matches up against team's best hockey. You have to find a way to muster it up,' Morrow said. 'Hopefully this little bit of adversity, and somewhat desperation now, is going to bring that out of us.'

HOME-ICE ADVANTAGE

Tampa Bay had the NHL's best home record during the regular season, but has already lost three times at Amalie Arena in the playoffs. The Canadians won Game 4 here and say home-ice advantage can be overrated at this time of year.

'Sometimes you look too much at the benefits of having one or the other,' forward Max Pacioretty said, adding his team has to concentrate on playing well, not potentially having an edge if the Canadiens can take the series back to Montreal for Game 7.

Any mistake, Pacioretty added, could wind up being the difference in keeping the season alive.

'One bad shift and we're out of this series,' Pacioretty said. 'It's great to have the energy, it's great to have some momentum and some confidence, but at the end of the day we make one mistake and our season's over. So we've got to make sure we stay focused and have the right mentality.'
