Game of the Day: Tuesday's NCAAB play-in games
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hampton Pirates vs. Manhattan Jaspers (-7.5, OFF)

Manhattan is playing its best basketball at the right time as it prepares to face Hampton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio. The Jaspers have won four in a row and seven of eight, including a run to their second straight Metro Atlantic Athletic tournament title, and a victory over fellow 16th seed Hampton sets up a Midwest region second-round game against top-seeded Kentucky. The Pirates makes their fourth NCAA appearance after winning the MEAC tournament as the sixth seed.

Hampton has five players averaging at least 9.7 points, but leading scorer Dwight Meikle (13.0) and rebounder (7.5) missed the last three games with an ankle injury and his status is uncertain. Manhattan boasts an experienced group that has held its last eight opponents to 39.5 percent from the field combined and gave Louisville a battle before losing in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Senior Emmy Andujar leads the Jaspers in scoring (16.5), rebounding (7.6), assists (3.5) and steals (2.1).

TV: 6:40 p.m. ET, TruTV

LINE HISTORY: Oddsmakers opened Manhattan as 7.5-point faves.

INJURY REPORT: Hampton - G Dwight Meikle (Questionable, ankle). Manhattan - N/A.

ABOUT HAMPTON (16-17 SU, 7-0 ATS, 3-2 O/U): The Pirates, who upset Iowa State in the 2001 NCAA Tournament, pulled away from Delaware State for an 82-61 victory after being tied at halftime in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference final. “I feel like it was just poise,” Hampton guard Deron Powers told reporters after being named tournament Most Outstanding Player. “I felt like in crunch time, we didn’t make as many mistakes.” Reginald Johnson recorded 16.5 points per game over the last four and is second on the team overall (11.9), just ahead of Powers (10.5).

ABOUT MANHATTAN (19-13 SU, 17-13-1 ATS, 12-9-1 O/U): The Jaspers will play in their eighth NCAA Tournament and has been a tough team to beat in February and March the last two years at 20-5. Andujar shoots 51.5 percent from the field and the 6-10 Ashton Pankey is second on the team in scoring (13.5) while making 54 percent of his shots and was the MAAC tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Shane Richards is Manhattan’s third major scoring option at 13.1 points per game and has drained a team-high 88 from 3-point range.

TRENDS:

* Pirates are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games overall.
* Jaspers are 4-0 ATS in their last four neutral site games.
* Under is 4-0 in Jaspers last four overall.

CONSENSUS: At the time of writing, 58 percent of bets were on Manhattan.

Ole Miss Rebels vs. BYU Cougars (-3, OFF)

BYU’s Kyle Collinsworth missed last year’s NCAA Tournament with an injury and gets a second chance when his Cougars take on Ole Miss in the first round Tuesday at Dayton, Ohio, in a battle of 11 seeds. Collinsworth, who set a NCAA single-season record with six triple-doubles, was a key factor along with Tyler Haws as BYU won eight of its last nine games. Ole Miss struggled to a 1-4 mark in its past five contests and gets a major test against the nation’s second-highest scoring team.

The Rebels return to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time with an experienced group that took top-ranked Kentucky to overtime in January. Stefan Moody finished fourth in the SEC in scoring (16.3) for Ole Miss and Haws boasts 2,687 career points while standing fourth in the nation at 21.9 per contest. The winner moves on to play sixth-seeded Xavier in the second round of the Western regional Thursday.

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, TruTV

LINE HISTORY: Oddsmakers opened BYU as a 2.5-point fave.

INJURY REPORT: Ole Miss - N/A. BYU - F Jamal Aytes (Questionable, ankle), G Anson Winder (Questionable, knee), G Skyler Halford (Questionable, leg).

ABOUT OLE MISS (20-12 SU, 16-14-1 ATS, 15-12-1 O/U): The Rebels dropped their last two against non-NCAA tournament teams -- Vanderbilt and South Carolina -- and will have to find the form that allowed them to win eight of nine from mid-January to mid-February. Moody has made a team-best 71 from behind the arc and senior Jarvis Summers runs the show while averaging 12.4 points and a team-high 4.6 assists. Those two must get ample support from a deep team, including LaDarius White (11.2 points) and Sebastian Saiz (7.6 points, team-high 5.4 boards).

ABOUT BYU (25-9 SU, 16-17 ATS, 16-11 O/U): Collinsworth tore the ACL in his right knee in the WCC championship game last season and the Cougars have injury concerns again. Third-leading scorer Anson Winder (13.1) missed the last two games with a knee injury while guard Skyler Halford suffered a lower leg injury in the last game and their status is uncertain. Collinsworth averages 14 points – including a career-best 28 in the West Coast Conference final loss to Gonzaga – 8.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists while Chase Fischer (12.9 points) is 97-of-236 (41.1 percent) from 3-point range.

TRENDS:

* Rebels are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
* Cougars are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 NCAA Tournament games.
* Over is 5-0 in Cougars last five neutral site games.

CONSENSUS: According to Consensus, 73 percent of wagers are backing the Cougars.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Tuesday, March 17

NCAA play-in games
Manhattan won last four games, seven of last eight; they're shocked and disappointed to be in a play-in game; they tied for 3rd in the #20-rated conference. Jaspers beat MEAC's Morgan State (7-24, 5-11) 73-69 Dec 20. Hampton beat Morgan State three times, by 4-28-20 points. MAAC teams are 0-6 in NCAA tourney last five years. Manhattan forces 24.1 turnovers a game #8 in US) but foul too much 7th-worst in putting foes on line). Hampton was 8-8 (6th) in 31st-rated league in country; they're turning ball over 20.5 times a game (#273).

BYU beat Iona 78-72 in play-in game three years ago, so they've been in this unique play-in atmosphere in Dayton. Cougars won eight of last nine games, losing to Gonzaga in WCC title game- they beat Zags in Spokane 73-70 on Senior Night. BYU is a strong offensive team with guards who are experienced. Ole Miss won a tournament game two years ago; they're 1-4 in last five games overall, have to be relieved to be here. Rebels won at Oregon in December; they're #23 experienced team in US. Ole Miss played better on road, winning five of last seven away from home.

First of all, nobody in these next three tournaments wants to be here; they all want to be in the NCAAs. Once teams win a game or two, it'll get better, but it is impossible to know who is motivated in the first round. Crowds will be smaller, teams don't travel first class in these events.

NIT games
George Washington won four of last six games after an ugly 1-6 skid that ruined its season. GW was 16-4 at one point this season; they're young, they don't sub much- they lost by 17 to Virginia of ACC. Pitt lost its last four games to fall off bubble; they're 2-0 vs A-14 teams, winning by 14-4 points over Duquesne/St Bonaventure.

NC Central went unbeaten in MEAC but lost tournament semis; they are 25-7 overall, losing by 16 at UNC, 9 at Cincinnati, 11 at Maryland- their defensive eFG% is #2 in country. Miami has injury issues; not sure how healthy PG Rodriguez is; Hurricanes beat Howard of MEAC by 35 in its season opener; they started season 8-0, then being young, floundered as the season went on.

Iona hasn't played in eight days since losing MAAC final to Manhattan; Gaels will shoot in first 0:10 of most possessions- they're 1-2 vs A-14 teams this season, with both losses by five points. Rhode Island went 13-5 in A-14, the #8 league; Rams split last six games after starting year 19-6. Rams don't shoot it well but they will defend- they allow teams to make just 27.7% on the arc, 3rd-lowest in country.

Louisiana Tech won C-USA by two games, but had to play UAB in the C-USA tournament in Birmingham and they got hosed, so they're going to be off-kilter here. Tech presses, plays fast, is experienced and they're 16-0 at home this season. Central Michigan won eight of last ten games but lost 89-84 to Buffalo in MAC finals; they're young team that played 3rd-easiest non-conference schedule in America.

Wm & Mary hasn't played in eight days since losing CAA final the night after beating Hofstra in double OT; Tribe were in 4-way tie for first in CAA- they've won four of last six games, are an offensive team that does not sub much. Tulsa finished 2nd in AAC but lost to a D-II team Dec 10; they lost three of last four games, to fall off bubble they shouldn't have been on in first place.

Who is coaching Alabama tonight? They fired Anthony Grant 45 minutes before brackets came out Sunday, have to be in turmoil to some extent. Tide lost 11 of last 17 games. Illinois lost five of last seven games; they beat Missouri by 3 in only game vs SEC foe. Illini lost last four games away from home, losing to a disheveled Michigan team by 18 last week.

Think Murray State has a chip on its shoulder? Only one way to show people they belonged in tournament; thats to do well here. Racers won 26 of last 27 games- they beat Middle Tennessee of C-USA by 19, but lost OVC title game 88-87 to Belmont. UTEP is tall team that split its last six games- they're more experienced than most of teams in this tournament. Miners lost four of last six true road games.

Montana lost Big Sky title game on its home floor late Saturday; this is fairly quick turnaround for road game at Texas A&M squad that lost four of last five games to fall off bubble, losing to shorthanded Auburn in SEC tourney. Aggies were 15-5 on Feb 1, 5-6 from that point on. Montana is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 17 at Colorado State, 5 at Boise State in double OT and by 11 at Davidson.

Stanford lost four of last five games, with win by hoop over Washington in Pac-12 tourney; Cardinal are 9-3 in non-league games, but didn't play any Big West teams. Cal-Davis won first Big West regular season title then lost to Hawai'i in Big West semis; Aggies are 25-6 but played #330 non-league schedule-- they lost by 7 at Washington State, one of worst teams in Pac-12.

CBI games
Rider was #2 seed in MAAC but had injury issues late in year; Broncs had won seven of last eight games before losing to St Peter's in tourney. Rider is 4th-worst foul shooting team in country (60.4%). Loyola won three of last four games after 3-8 skid; they haven't played in ten days. Doyle came back for last two games- he had 11 points in 30:00 against UNI last game- they were 13-5 before he got hurt.

CIT tournament
Oakland was 11-5 (T3) in Horizon, #15 league in country; they lost last two games after an 11-2 run. Grizzlies played #12 schedule in country, struggling with 4-10 non-league record; they won in OT at Morehead State of OVC in December. Eastern Illinois started OVC play 6-0 then lost eight of last 11 games; Panthers won by hoop at Cleveland State of OVC in December.

James Madison is one of four teams that tied for first in CAA; they are 7-6 outside CAA, but won six of last eight games overall. SC-Upstate lost A-Sun final by 6 at North Florida; they're 4-4 in last eight games, are experienced team but they also play non-D-I games. A-Sun is #30 league in country, CAA #18. Dukes' last 5 losses were all by 12+ points- they won four of their last five road games.

Bowling Green went 3-5 in last eight games after starting 17-6 in Jans' 1st season as Falcons' coach, but they've won five of last six true road games. Falcons are 11-0 this season vs teams outside top 200. St Francis lost six of last eight games; they haven't played in ten days. Red Flash is an older team that played #38 non-league schedule. MAC is #10 league; NEC is #28 league. Bowling Green went 11-7 in league play.

Norfolk State went 12-4 in MEAC, finishing four games behind North Carolina Central; Spartans went 7-8 vs #16 non-league schedule- they're 4-2 in last six games, but won six of last seven true road games. Eastern Kentucky went 11-5 in OVC (#22 league) tying Belmont for second in league; Colonels won eight of last ten games, but lost 53-52 to Belmont in OVC semis.

UL-Lafayette went 13-7 in Sun Belt, #19 league; Cajuns are 0-2 this year vs Southland teams, losing by 10 at McNeese State, at Northwestern St by 4- they play fast, sub a lot. Incarnate Word is new to D-I and started season with four non-D-I wins. Southland is #27 league. Cardinals lost three of last four games- they're an offensive team, with the #56 eFG%.
