GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS (82-20) at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (67-34)

NBA Finals
Tip-off: Tuesday, 9:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Golden State -4.5, Total: 195

The Warriors look to finish off the series when they visit the Cavaliers in Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday.

The Golden State Warriors used a late 19-7 run to pull away from the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. PG Stephen Curry found his MVP form and led the way with 37 points on 7-for-13 shooting from three-point range.

SF Andre Iguodala started for the second consecutive game and played well, scoring 14 points and adding eight rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.

PF Draymond Green also turned in a solid performance with 16 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, and SG Leandro Barbosa chipped in off the bench with 13 points.

SF LeBron James once again led the way for the Cavs with an incredible 40 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists. His supporting cast was not at its best, and only PF Tristan Thompson, who finished with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, had a strong individual outing.

The Under is now 3-1-1 in the series. The Cavs are 2-3 SU and 2-3 ATS against the Warriors in the NBA Finals, including 1-1 SU and 1-1 ATS at home. Golden State is 20-8 ATS after two straight wins by 10 points or more this season. Cleveland, however, is 11-3 ATS revenging a road loss of 10 points or more this season.

PG Kyrie Irving (Knee), PF Kevin Love (Shoulder), and C Anderson Varejao (Achilles) remain out for the season for the Cavaliers, while the Warriors have no notable injury concerns.

Golden State has used a small lineup in the past two games of the NBA Finals, and the strategy seems to be working for Steve Kerr.

PG Stephen Curry (26.2 PPG, 6.0 APG, 5.0 RPG, 1.6 SPG in series) shot the ball often and effectively in Game 5, and finished with 37 points, the most he has scored all series. This strong performance included 17 points in the decisive fourth quarter.

Despite shooting just 2-for-11 from the free throw line, SF Andre Iguodala (14.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 3.8 APG, 1.2 SPG in series) was invaluable for the Warriors in many facets of the game. He must, however, improve from the charity stripe or Kerr may need to take him out on the off chance the Cavaliers go to the “Hack-A-Shaq”.

SG Klay Thompson (18.0 PPG in series) was quiet with 12 points, but like in Game 4, when he scored just 9 points, his team was still able to prevail. If both Curry and Thompson play well in Game 6, Golden State could very well be NBA Champions by the end of the night.

A huge triple-double from SF LeBron James (36.6 PPG, 12.4 RPG, 8.8 APG, 1.2 SPG in series) was not enough to give the Cavaliers a 3-2 edge in the series, and his team will need to win on its home court in order to force a Game 7.

His help in Game 5 was limited to PF Tristan Thompson (9.0 PPG, 13.0 RPG, 1.0 BPG in series), as the rest of Cleveland’s lineup played poorly.

C Timofey Mozgov (13.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.0 BPG in series) went scoreless in just nine minutes of action after a career Game 6 in which he scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and seems to be a victim of the downsized lineups employed by the Warriors. David Blatt opted once again to play just eight players, and he seems unlikely to change his rotation in Game 6, which could be the last of the NBA season.

LeBron confident Cavs can force Game 7

June 15, 2015

CLEVELAND (AP) - Wearing a leather Cavaliers cap and a steely look, LeBron James used his postgame platform to proclaim that he's ''the best player in the world.''

It's not as if his greatness was in dispute after five dominant games of these NBA Finals. James has shown no one challenges his on-court supremacy. However, while his game and confidence soar, James knows he must do even more, if possible, to stop Cleveland's inspiring postseason from crashing.

''I've got to be better,'' James said.

Even that might not be enough.

Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors are one win from a golden trophy.

Up 3-2 in a scintillating series loaded with subplots and strategy, the Warriors can win their first title since 1975 on Tuesday night with a win in Game 6. James didn't blink after Game 5 when he declared he was not only the top player on seven continents, but prepared to raise his game.

''We've got enough to win it,'' he said. ''I feel confident.''

But so are the Warriors, and James' bravado - and his preposterous postseason statistics aside - won't matter if Curry, who found his stroke a few games back in Quicken Loans Arena, shoots the way he did in Sunday night's 104-91 win.

Curry scored 17 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter, when he answered every one of James' big baskets with stunning buckets of his own as the game's two biggest stars played a finals version of ''H-O-R-S-E'' to the delight of millions of TV viewers and a sonic crowd inside Oracle Arena.

Curry showed why he was the league's MVP this season, setting the Warriors up to take home the shimmering Larry O'Brien Trophy. Curry was treated for dehydration after Game 5, but he's expected to be fully recovered as the Warriors try to finish the Cavs.

''We fought hard all year and put ourselves in good position now to go to Cleveland and hopefully close it out,'' Curry said. ''We're confident.''

James stands in Golden State's way, and clearly intends to do everything in his power to force Game 7. It's unfathomable to think James can give any more than he already has, but he has no choice.

''I don't put a ceiling on what I'm capable of doing,'' he said. ''I know I'm shouldering a lot of the burden, but it is what it is.''

After a 40-point, 14-rebound, 11-assist performance, he's averaging 36.6 points, 12.5 rebounds and 8.8 assists - a mind-boggling statistical line never before seen in finals history. James is doing it all with All-Stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love recovering from postseason surgeries, sparking debate about whether he deserves to be the finals MVP - win or lose. Jerry West (1969) is the only player to win MVP honors for a losing team.

''He sets the pace,'' said Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. ''He's doing what defenses give him and he's playing smart.''

Smart and sublime may not be enough.

Cleveland's supporting cast isn't pulling its weight. The Cavs got early baskets from J.R. Smith in Game 5, but the streaky shooter didn't score in the last 33 minutes. Guards Iman Shumpert and Matthew Dellavedova went a combined 5 of 18 and were tentative with the ball.

Cavs coach David Blatt matched Golden State coach Steve Kerr's smaller starting lineup in Game 5, electing to play center Timofey Mozgov for just nine minutes after the 7-footer scored 28 points with 10 rebounds in Game 4. Blatt was defensive about his decision, snapping that he did what he felt necessary.

''Did I make a mistake?'' asked Blatt, who had James at center for long stretches and didn't indicate he'll change for Game 6. ''I felt that the best chance for us to stay in the game and to have a chance to win was to play it the way that we played it.''

The Cavs didn't expect to be in this position, not after losing Love in the first round, and not once Irving broke his kneecap in Game 1 of the finals.

They've been discarded before, so this latest adversity is nothing new to James and his teammates.

When he led the Cavs to his first finals in 2007, James watched as San Antonio finished off a sweep in Cleveland, Tim Duncan and the Spurs reveling in their championship under a shower of confetti. Now in his fifth consecutive finals, James doesn't want this storybook postseason to end.

Judging by his demeanor after Game 5, that's the plan.

''We've got enough to win it,'' he said. ''I feel confident.''

Kerr knows what Warriors face in Game 6

June 16, 2015

CLEVELAND (AP) - Steve Kerr's players had never been to the NBA Finals, so only he knows what the Golden State Warriors face in Game 6.

They can win a championship, the franchise's first since 1975, with a victory in Cleveland. But that means containing LeBron James, which the Warriors have hardly done, and beating a Cavaliers team that will be desperate to make the series go the distance.

Kerr won five titles as a player, so he's aware of how difficult it will be, even for what was the NBA's best team this season.

''There is a lot of emotion. You're right there on the cusp of something, but you still have to get the job done, and in this case we'll be on the road against a great team,'' Kerr said. ''It's going to be hard. It's just the way it is.''

The Warriors have won the last two games, controlling the fourth quarters against a Cavaliers team that is undermanned and it seems out of breath down the stretch.

James is having one of the best individual NBA Finals ever, but largely doing it alone. His teammates need to help him to send the series back to California for Game 7 on Friday.

''We have to come out swinging. That's the only thing we can do,'' guard J.R. Smith said. ''We're in a dogfight and our backs are against the wall. The only way we will make it out is to fight.''

Some things to watch in Game 6:

CURRY VS. DELLY: When Matthew Dellavedova helped force Stephen Curry into a 5-for-23 shooting performance in Game 2, then scored 20 points in Game 3, it appeared the underdog from Down Under could end up with an advantage against the NBA's MVP. But Curry outscored him 22-10 in Game 4, 37-5 in Game 5, and that plot no longer seems believable.

''You know, maybe Steph had an off game or two. That's basketball,'' Warriors forward Draymond Green said.

''I'm taking Steph in any matchup. So (Dellavedova) was hounding and physical, dirty, it's a fine line, whatever you want to call it. He do what he do, but I was going with Steph no matter what, and I'm still rolling with Steph no matter what.''

RAIN ON THE PARADE: James' first NBA Finals ended with the San Antonio Spurs partying on the Cavaliers' home floor after completing a sweep in 2007. It's a scene James isn't interested in witnessing again.

''Well, we don't want them celebrating at all, no matter if it's on our home floor or their home floor,'' he said. ''We've come this far, and we've been very good at home. We have to understand why we weren't good in Game 4. We had a lack of energy. We had a lack of effort in a lot of areas in Game 4, and we can't repeat that or they'll raise the trophy for sure.''

DOMINANT DEFENSE: Despite James' astounding performances, the Warriors are clamping down with their defense. Cleveland shot just 39.5 percent from the field in Game 5, the third time this series the Warriors limited the Cavs to under 40 percent. Cleveland is shooting just 38.2 percent in the finals.

MORE MOZGOV? Timofey Mozgov went from best game of his career to the bench, scoring 28 points in Game 4 but playing 9 scoreless minutes in Game 5 when coach David Blatt pulled him in hopes of matching the Warriors' small lineup. Blatt indicated there would still be a role for the 7-foot-1 center, no matter what the Warriors do with their lineup.

''It's no disrespect to anyone, certainly not to Timo, who has done a great job for us. That's just the way that we played it tonight, and Timo will be back and he will not lose his way or lose his head just because he didn't play a lot tonight,'' Blatt said. ''He'll be back playing like he always can, I'm sure, because he's got character and he doesn't listen to a lot of you guys.''

WHO WINS?: Ask Shane Battier, an NBA champion when he played with James in Miami and now an analyst for ESPN who believes that the Cavs' short bench will finally catch up to them.

''But one thing I've learned playing with LeBron for three years, you never count the man out. You never count those games out. He's a once-in-a-generation type player,'' Battier said Monday during a conference call to promote the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe this July.

''If he scores 50 points, the Cavs will win. If he doesn't, I have the Golden State Warriors ending the series at six.''

Up 3-2, Warriors expect Cavs' punch

June 15, 2015

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Stephen Curry received treatment for dehydration following Game 5 of the NBA Finals, a little worn out after carrying Golden State to the brink of its first championship in 40 years.

The Warriors will need him at his best Tuesday, knowing what's coming from LeBron James in Cleveland.

''They're going to come out and give it their best punch,'' Warriors guard Klay Thompson said.

The Warriors will have two chances to win the series after taking a 3-2 lead with their 104-91 victory Sunday. They would host Game 7, if necessary, on Friday.

''We don't want to come back here,'' Thompson said. ''As much as we'd love to win it in front of our fans, we really want to finish it in Cleveland.''

James had 40 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists Sunday, his second triple-double in the series, and was asked how he copes with such a performance not resulting in victory.

''Well, you cope with it by understanding it's just one game and looking at the opportunity we have on Tuesday to force a Game 7,'' he said. ''Obviously, for myself, I want to do whatever it takes to help our team win, and I haven't been able to do that the last two. So hopefully I can do a better job coming in on Tuesday. We all as a unit can do a better job, and we'll be fine.''

Some things from Game 5 to watch when the series returns to Cleveland:

MVP! MVP!: After Curry's dismal Game 2 and rough start to Game 3, he has rediscovered his shot. His 37-point performance Sunday including seven 3-pointers, the second time in the series he's fallen one shy of Ray Allen's NBA Finals record.

''I just think sooner or later, Steph's going to get going,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. ''He had a tough first couple of games. He got going at the end of Game 3 in the fourth quarter, and that's all it takes. Steph makes a couple shots, he feels like he's got it rolling, and he's been great ever since.''

FANTASTIC FINISHES: The Warriors, with their superior depth, have largely dominated the fourth quarters of the last three games, outscoring the Cavaliers by 12, 15 and seven points. Whether the problem has been fatigue or poor execution, the Cavaliers know they have to clean that up in Cleveland.

''We gave up 31 points in the fourth,'' James said of Sunday's game. ''Some of them were free throws, but a lot of them were them just breaking us down. So we've got to do a better job of that.''

LEGEND OF LEBRON: James is averaging 36.6 points, 12.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists in the series with two triple-doubles. He's one shy of tying the record of four 40-point games in one finals, set by Jerry West in 1969 and Michael Jordan in 1993, and has been so good that the Warriors don't even pretend they might stop him.

''He's been there for years now, so you're not going to shut him down. But if you continue to make him work hard for each and every bucket that he gets, it takes a toll on his body,'' said Golden State's Draymond Green, the runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year.

''If he gets 40, he gets 40. Like I said, that's why he's LeBron James. You can go throw a triple-team at him, and he'll probably still get 40, but as long as you make him work for those 40, then you've got to be satisfied with what you do.''

HACK-AN-IGGY: Though Cleveland coach David Blatt has said he is against the Hack-a-Shaq strategy of intentionally fouling away from the ball, Andre Iguodala wasn't surprised when the Cavaliers used it against him down the stretch.

Iguodala was just 2 for 11 from the free-throw line in Game 5 and a woeful 6 for 18 (33.3 percent) in the finals, so he figures he may see more of the strategy the remainder of the series.

''So got a day tomorrow when we get to Cleveland to prepare for it, and it's a challenge,'' Iguodala said. ''Just like any other challenge, you want to meet it head on and you want to be ready for it.''

Longoria leaves game after hit by pitch

Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria left the Rays' game against the Washington Nationals Monday night in the sixth inning after he was hit on the left wrist by a pitch from reliever Taylor Hill.

Longoria had trainers checking the injury and walked to first before going into the dugout, He was replaced by pinch-runner Nick Franklin.

Longoria missed three games last week because of soreness in the same wrist.

There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury.

Royals bump Ventura's start to Friday

MILWAUKEE -- Kansas City right-hander Yordano Ventura threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Monday at Miller Park, but he won't make his next scheduled start, manager Ned Yost announced Monday.

Ventura was slated to face the Brewers on Wednesday back in Kansas City but instead will take the mound Friday against the Boston Red Sox. The change gives the 23-year-old two extra days to recover from numbness in his right hand that forced him from his last start after just three innings.

"What we're doing is playing it safe and not pushing it," Yost said before the Royals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-5.

Marlins' Fernandez eyes July 2 return

MIAMI -- Miami Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez, an All-Star and the National League Rookie of the Year in 2013, announced Monday that he will make his return to the majors July 2 in a home game against the San Francisco Giants.

Fernandez has been out since May 12, 2014 due to Tommy John elbow surgery.

"I feel ready to pitch in the major leagues," Fernandez said. "Everything feels normal."

Fernandez, 22, went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA in 28 starts as a rookie. Last year, he was 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA in eight starts before getting hurt.

In two rehab starts this month for Class A Jupiter, Fernandez is 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA.

Brewers' Gomez back to bench with leg ailment

MILWAUKEE -- With his right leg bothering him, Carlos Gomez was scratched from the Milwaukee Brewers' starting lineup before batting practice Monday afternoon.

Gomez missed three consecutive games because of a sore right hip before returning to action Saturday. He went a combined 1-for-8 with four strikeouts Saturday and Sunday, so manager Craig Counsell decided to rest the speedy outfielder.

"The goal is to get Carlos at 100 percent," Counsell said. "I don't think the last couple days he's 100 percent. Just trying to get him closer to 100 percent so we can (have) the Carlos that we know.

"I thought we'd just take a couple days and try to get him there."

Gomez could return to action Wednesday, when the Brewers open a two-game series at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City -- an American League park, which would allow Gomez to serve as the designated hitter, but Counsell wasn't ready to commit to that theory.

Giants' home skid nearly a franchise record

SAN FRANCISCO -- The slumping San Francisco Giants made the wrong kind of history Monday night at AT&T Park with a 5-1 loss to Seattle.

The Giants lost their ninth consecutive home game, their longest home skid since a franchise-record 11-game losing streak in 1940 at the Polo Grounds in New York. The Giants have been outscored 45-17 during the losing streak at AT&T.

Phils' bats go missing on dreadful road trip

BALTIMORE -- Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg sat in his quiet offense after his team was shut out for a second consecutive game Monday and tried to talk about why the Phillies lost their seventh in a row.

"We're just having trouble swinging the bats and getting some things going and had a tough road trip on that note," he said. "We need to swing the bats, and we've had problems scoring runs."

Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen threw eight strong innings in a 4-0 shutout of the Phillies.

Philadelphia fell to 0-7 on an road trip that ends Tuesday at Camden Yards, following sweeps in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The Phillies were shut out in three of the past four, and they have only 11 runs overall on the trip.

MLB roundup: Mets stun Blue Jays, snap Toronto streak

NEW YORK -- Wilmer Flores' two-out RBI single Monday night capped a stunning 11th-inning comeback by the New York Mets, who snapped the Toronto Blue Jays' 11-game winning streak with a 4-3 win at Citi Field.

The Mets have won four of five games. Hansel Robles earned the win despite allowing the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th when Ezequiel Carrera walked, went to third on a single by Chris Colabello and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dioner Navarro.

Jose Bautista hit solo homers in the first and ninth for the Blue Jays. His first home traveled an estimated 449 feet.

A's 9, Padres 1

SAN DIEGO -- Stephen Vogt hit a grand slam and drove in five runs and starter Jesse Hahn held his former team to one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings as Oakland routed San Diego.

Earlier in the day, the Padres fired manager Bud Black, ending the second-longest managerial reign in franchise history. Black had managed the Padres since the start of the 2007 season.

Bench coach Dave Roberts will manage the Padres until an interim manager from within the organization is named later this week.

Royals 8, Brewers 5

MILWAUKEE -- Alcides Escobar singled twice and drove in a pair of runs, and Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run homer to lead Kansas City over Milwaukee.

Cain also finished with two hits, as did Salvatore Perez, Alex Rios and Omar Infante.

In all, the Royals collected 13 hits off four Milwaukee pitchers but did most of their damage against struggling starter Kyle Lohse.

Mariners 5, Giants 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- Taijuan Walker pitched seven strong innings, Kyle Seager hit a solo home run, and Seattle defeated San Francisco.

The Giants lost their ninth straight home game, the longest home skid in franchise history since an 11-game losing streak in 1940 at the Polo Grounds in New York. The Giants have been outscored 45-17 during their losing streak at AT&T.

The hard throwing Walker, who turns 23 in August, allowed one run on seven hits. He struck out six, walked none and threw 98 pitches.

Diamondbacks 7, Angels 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Robbie Ray threw seven scoreless innings and Paul Goldschmidt had three hits, including a three-run homer, leading Arizona past Los Angeles.

It was the fourth win in a row for the Diamondbacks, who got another strong performance from their starting pitcher. Ray became the third Diamondbacks pitcher in the past four games to take a no-hitter into the sixth. Chase Anderson and Allen Webster each did it over the weekend against the Giants.

Ray's no-hitter was broken up in the sixth inning on Daniel Robertson's two-out single.

Rays, 6 Nationals 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay got a fourth straight impressive start from Erasmo Ramirez, who threw six shutout innings and dominated Washington.

The Rays had their last eight wins all come by one or two runs. Ramirez earned his sixth win in the last seven starts. He's allowed just three runs in his last four starts, over a combined 23.1 innings.

The Nationals saw Gio Gonzalez last just 3 1/3 innings for his shortest outing of the season, leaving with a 5-0 deficit in the fourth inning.

Tigers 6, Reds 0

DETROIT -- Anibal Sanchez tossed his first complete-game shutout in more than two years, and J.D. Martinez homered for the third consecutive game as Detroit cruised past Cincinnati.

Sanchez allowed just two hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out seven for the Tigers. His last shutout was a one-hitter against Minnesota on May 24, 2013. He has not given up a run in his last 20 2/3 innings.

Detroit's Miguel Cabrera had two hits and drove in two runs, and Yoenis Cespedes added two hits, scored a run and knocked in another.

Orioles 4, Phillies 0

BALTIMORE -- Matt Wieters broke the game open with a three-run homer in the sixth, and Wei-Yin Chen threw eight shutout innings as Baltimore handed Philadelphia its seventh straight loss.

The Orioles now have won nine of their last 11. Philadelphia has dropped 17 of its last 20 games.

Chen won a second consecutive start. He gave up only a bunt single through six innings and allowed only four hits in a dominating performance.

Indians-Cubs, postponed

CHICAGO -- Heavy rainfall drenched Wrigley Field and a funnel cloud was spotted on the city's fringe as Chicago and Cleveland attempted to open a two-game interleague series.

While the most threatening weather appeared to pass by 5:30 p.m., the rain never stopped and the game was called around 5:40 p.m.

Cubs officials said the game will be made up Aug. 24, an open date for both teams.

Marlins 2, Yankees 1

MIAMI – Derek Dietrich, starting his first game of the season, hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the seventh inning, leading Miami over New York.

Dietrich, who was promoted from Triple-A on Friday to serve as a utility infielder, started at third base in place of the injured Martin Prado. Dietrich doubled and scored Miami's first run and then pulled his home run to right on a 2-0 pitch.

Miami starter Tom Koehler, a native of the Bronx, New York, earned the win in his first time facing the Yankees. He lasted seven innings, allowing just three hits, two walks and one run.

Pirates 11, White Sox 0

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh scored five runs before Chicago starter Carlos Rodon recorded an out and Francisco Liriano pitched eight shutout innings to lead Pirates in the rout.

Pittsburgh pounded out 11 runs on 18 hits.

Liriano yielded only two hits and walked one. He struck out a career-high 12.

Braves 4, Red Sox 2

BOSTON — Williams Perez didn't allow an earned run for the second straight start as Atlanta snapped a six-game losing streak against Boston.

The rookie was pitching for the third time in six days after tossing a scoreless inning and recording a save on Saturday in the Braves' 5-3 win over the New York Mets.

Perez gave up five hits, all singles, and issued two walks while recording two strikeouts over six innings to lower his ERA to 2.41 for Atlanta, which won at Fenway for the first time since 2012.

Rangers 4, Dodgers 1

ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas' Yovani Gallardo worked seven scoreless innings and the offense broke through for four runs in the sixth in a victory over Los Angeles.

Gallardo's outing extended the streak of quality starts by Texas pitchers to 11 games, a club record and the longest stretch in the majors this year.

Gallardo, who has a 2.66 ERA over his last seven starts, allowed four hits and struck out four.

Astros 6, Rockies 3

HOUSTON -- George Springer provided insurance with his second home run of the night in the seventh inning and Houston's bullpen nailed down its first save in nearly two weeks in a win against Colorado.

After Colorado clawed to within 5-3 on an RBI double by Nick Hundley in the top of the seventh inning, Springer responded by belting his 10th home run leading off the bottom of the frame.

The Astros last recorded a save on June 2 against the Baltimore Orioles. During the ensuing stretch, Houston endured a seven-game losing skid before recording a pair of blowout wins over the Seattle Mariners over the weekend.

Cardinals 3, Twins 2

ST. LOUIS -- John Lackey threw eight solid innings to pace St. Louis to its fourth consecutive win.

Lackey gave up five hits and two runs, walked one and fanned six. Working with six days of rest after his Sunday start against Kansas City was rained out, Lackey threw 100 pitches, 74 for strikes. He was hit hard at Colorado on June 8.

While Minnesota suffered its sixth loss in seven games, the Cardinals upped their home record to a major-league-best 25-7.

Thunderstorms in Arlington Tuesday

According to weather forecasts, there are thunderstorms expected at Globe Life Park in Arlington when the Texas Rangers host the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday evening.

The storms are expected throughout the day and into the early innings of the game.

Mariners add some needed speed

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Seattle Mariners added some much-needed speed to their arsenal Monday, calling up outfielder James Jones from Triple-A Tacoma.

Jones stole 27 bases in 108 games for the Mariners last season, the most by any rookie in the American League and the second most by a rookie in franchise history.

"A lot of different factors went into it, but Jones brings speed, defense in the outfield, hopefully a spark in a different way for us," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said of the move before his team's 5-1 victory against the Giants. "He's capable of stealing bases when we need 'em, even when you know he's going. We like that idea, particularly here in a National League ballpark and hopefully it pays off for us.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six most improved teams in 2015, according to Phil Steele's great magazine.........

6) Temple-- 19 starters back; 15 seniors on defensive two-deep depth chart.

5) Indiana-- Add RB Howard from UAB; he should be a big help.

4) Pitt-- Narduzzi is Pitt's fifth head coach in this decade; unreal.

3) Michigan-- I heard they hired a new coach-- is this true????

2) Akron-- Went 5-7 LY despite being favored in nine of 12 games.

1) Miami Fla-- Even with only one senior projected to start on offemse.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Last winter, the Padres jacked their payroll up from $90,636,600 LY to this year's $108,387,033; that increase brought expectations, which a 32-33 record didn't satisfy, so Monday, after 8.5 years in charge, manager Bud Black got fired.

12) Angels won the 2002 World Series; three of Mike Scioscia's coaches from that year started this season as big league managers-- two have already been fired-- Ron Roenicke in Milwaukee and now Black (Joe Maddon is the third). Whether it is fair or not, the manager takes the hit for an underachieving team. Just the way it is.

11) Padres GM AJ Preller is another Ivy League alum (Cornell) who has become the head of a big league organization; he was a frat brother of Texas GM Jon Daniels while at Cornell. Here is part of Preller's quote about the firing........

"At the end of the day this was the direction we wanted to go. I've evaluated him (Black) overall for eight months when I was looking at everything. I've seen inconsistencies, ups and downs. This team is not bottoming out or playing poorly. Just too much inconsistency. We have not played to the level we are capable of."

In other words, Preller is saying "I did MY JOB. They're underachieving!!!"

Elsewhere in this crazy world of ours.......
10) White Sox scored zero or one run in 14 of their first 62 games.

9) Anthoy Rizzo has already been hit by 15 pitches this year; he crowds the plate.

8) Ichiro Suzuki is 34-115 with seven walks (one HBP) against John Lackey; the 123 plate appearances are the most of any active hitter against any active pitcher.

7) Mets promoted Danny Muno to the majors five times this year and sent him back down five times; we talked few weeks ago how Muno's dad played football with Joe Montana in college-- my friend Joe from Yorktown Heights let me know that Muno's grandfather once served as Montana's agent-- now that must've been a good gig.

6) Glad to see Chris Davis bunt for a hit against the shift last night; might've been the hardest bunt ever-- it landed on the chalk, five feet past third base. Joey Votto also bunted for a hit against the shift last night--- good for them.

5) Cuban defector Yasmany Tomas can really hit, but his agent did him a disservice by hooking him up with an NL team-- he has no position to play. He should be with an American League team, where he could DH every day.

4) Last two nights, I've heard TV announcers bash the A's over the Donaldson trade; Keith Hernandez did it last night, someone else on Sunday, can't remember who, since I watch too much TV. Here are the details of that trade........

Firstly, Donaldson is a bus driver, a great player who can "drive the bus" to wins; he helped the A's make the playoffs three years in a row, but he was getting expensive and expensive doesn't fly in Oakland, no matter how good you are. On November 28, A's traded Donaldson to Toronto for these four humans..........

-- Brett Lawrie is no Donaldson, but he's done OK at third base this year. hitting .272.
-- Kendall Graveman is 3-3, 4.22 in nine starts for Oakland, but has a 2.20 ERA in his last five starts and looks like a keeper.
-- Sean Nolin has a 1.77 ERA n his first five AAA starts this year; he had one dreadful start in the big leagues back in 2013.
-- Franklin Barreto is a 19-year old shortstop hitting .263 in A ball.

3) Graveman/Nolin are projected as big league starting pitchers; ask someone who is a Red Sox fan if starting pitching is important. Pitching is more important than having a great third baseman- you cannot win without high quality pitching.

So my point is this: TV nitwits can jump on the pile and bash the A's, but they are strapped by payroll concerns-- the only way they can stay competitive is to stockpile young pitchers, its the only chance they have. This year is a disaster but maybe next year won't be- they need to get some more prospects when they sell off older players like Zobrist, Clippard and Kazmir in the next six weeks. It is their reality.

2) Home plate umpire Marty Foster got drilled in the jaw by a foul ball last night and had to leave the Toronto-Mets game in the third inning; really a vicious blow that KO'd him after he finished that half inning. Umpires take a beating behind the plate; so do catchers. Hopefully Mr Foster will be back on the field soon.

1) Freddie Freeman was 30 for his first 68 with runners in scoring position; wow!!!.

Making shots; it is that simple; Warriors are 34-83 from arc in their three series wins, 20-69 in two lossess. Golden State was 39-61 from line in last two games, after going just 7-12 in Game 3. Cleveland needs to attack hoop more; they were 15-21 on line last game, 12-35 on arc. Warriors played well once they started playing with sense of desperation; now the Cavaliers are desperate team. Cleveland was 16-62 from arc in last two games- they were 27-89 in first three games.

Mosgov had 28 points in Game 4, played 9 minutes Sunday; will he see the court in this game?

Golden State won 10 of its last 14 games with Cleveland; 11 of the 14 games were decided by 8+ points. Cavaliers are 14-5 so far in playoffs, Warriors are 15-5. Under is 11-3-1 in last 15 Golden State games, 3-0-1 in last four. Under is 6-1-1 in last eight series games. Golden State needs a faster-paced game to succeed in this series. .

Game of the Day: Warriors at Cavaliers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Cleveland Cavaliers (+4.5, 194.5)

Warriors lead 3-2

The Golden State Warriors look to secure their first world title in 40 years when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers in Tuesday's Game 6 of the NBA Finals. Golden State has won the past two games, including Sunday's 104-91 victory, but Cleveland's LeBron James will be aiming for another stellar effort to force a Game 7 on Friday.

James had 40 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists in Game 5 but his second triple-double of the series wasn't enough and now Cleveland's season lies on the brink. "You cope with it by understanding it's just one game and looking at the opportunity we have on Tuesday to force a Game 7," James said in his press conference. "Obviously, for myself, I want to do whatever it takes to help our team win, and I haven't been able to do that the last two games." Warriors guard Stephen Curry had a huge 37-point outing in Game 5 and is ready to close out the series. "We're confident. We're not getting ahead of ourselves," Curry said in his press conference. "In the locker room, if you walked in there was the exact same (feeling) after a regular-season win. But we know the sense of urgency of the moment."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY: Books initially opened the Cavs as 4.5-point home dogs, but that's since dropped down to +4.

INJURY REPORT: Warriors - S. Curry (probable). Cavaliers - K. Irving (out for season), K. Love (out for season), A. Varejao (out for season).

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: The regular-season MVP version of Curry was on display when he scored 17 points in the fourth quarter of Game 5 and was 7-of-13 from 3-point range for the contest. He struggled with his shooting early in the series -- the 5-for-23 effort in Game 2 was particularly distasteful -- and has made 18 3-pointers over the past three games while raising his series average to 26.2 points. "He had a tough first couple of games and he got going at the end of Game 3 in the fourth quarter and that's all it takes," Golden State coach Steve Kerr said in his press conference. "Steph makes a couple shots, he feels like he's got it rolling, and he's been great ever since."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: With Golden State playing a small lineup, Cleveland coach David Blatt opted to match it and turned center Timofey Mozgov into a spectator one game after Mozgov was sensational with 28 points and 10 rebounds. The Warriors are happy to play the faster pace and Blatt bristled when reporters repeatedly inferred he played into Golden State's hand by using Mozgov for just nine scoreless minutes. "Did I make a mistake?" Blatt said in his press conference. "Listen, when you're coaching a game, you've got to make decisions. I felt that the best chance for us to stay in the game and to have a chance to win was to play it the way that we played it. It's no disrespect to anyone, certainly not to Timo, who has done a great job for us."

TRENDS:

*Under is 13-3-1 in Warriors last 17 overall.
*Under is 3-0-1 in Cavaliers last 4 overall.
*Warriors are 12-5 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
*Home team is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

The basketball betting trend that keeps cashing

The under went 4-1-1 in six WNBA games on Sunday's board, keeping alive one of the hottest betting trends you may not know about.

Season to date, the Over/Under mark in the WNBA is 7-15-2, good enough for the under to cash at a rate of just over 68 percent.

The Washington Mystics (0-4 O/U), Connecticut Sun (0-3-1), San Antonio Stars (0-3) and Los Angeles Sparks (0-1-1) have yet to record an Over.

There are four games Tuesday.

WNBA Betting Recap - 6/8-6/14

June 14, 2015

League Betting Notes (from Monday, June 8 through Sunday, June 14)

-- Underdogs went 8-6 straight up
-- Underdogs went 10-4 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 9-5 SU record
-- Home/road teams posted a 7-7 ATS record
-- The 'under' went 8-5-1

Team Betting Notes

-- For the second straight week, it was the 'under' edging out the 'over' on totals in WNBA play. In the opening week of play the 'under' went 6-4 and in Week 2 it was 8-5-1.

-- Phoenix (2-2) picked up just their second win in four tries, cooling off Minnesota (3-1) by an 81-66 count despite entering as an 8-point underdog. The Mercury also cashed +330 on the moneyline.

-- The 'under' has connected in three of the first four games for the Lynx, and the total record is identical for the Mercury with the under at 3-1.

-- After a nightmare opening weekend, Atlanta (2-3) bounced back with a pair of wins in three tries this week. However, they're still just 1-4 ATS overall on the season, and the 'under' is 3-1-1 for the Dream.

-- Washington (3-1) picked up a road victory, cashing as a 4.5-point underdog at New York (3-2). The Liberty are 3-0 SU against everyone else, and 0-2 against the Liberty. The loss also marked a 4-0 ATS run to open the season for New York.

-- Tulsa (3-1) picked up a 73-62 road win at San Antonio (0-3) Sunday, and that moves the Shock to 4-0 ATS on the young season.

-- The 'under' has hit in all three games for the Stars so far this season. They have a rematch with the Shock in Oklahoma Tuesday.

-- Indiana (1-4) is off to a terrible start, and they suffered yet another loss and non-cover Sunday at the hand of Chicago (2-2). The Fever have opened the season 0-5 ATS. They'll look to get their first cover on the road Friday in Atlanta.

-- Lastly, Connecticut (3-1) posted an impressive 82-64 victory against Atlanta. The Sun have opened the season 4-0 ATS, and the 'under' is 3-0-1 through four games for Connecticut.

-- Los Angeles (0-2) has had only two games so far, both against Seattle (2-2). The Sparks are 0-2 ATS, too, so they'll be happy to see someone else on the schedule, even if it is Minnesota Tuesday.
