Bumgarner endures another tough-luck loss

SEATTLE -- Madison Bumgarner's brief bid with perfection ended in the fifth inning Wednesday when a controversial infield hit followed 13 consecutive outs.

One inning later, the questions about whether that infield single was actually a hit were silenced by two Seattle runs and a sudden 2-0 Mariners lead.

In the end, Bumgarner put together another solid outing, only to come up short. In his past two starts, the Giants have failed to score a run, losing 1-0 to the Arizona Diamondbacks last Friday, then 2-0 to Seattle.

"He was electric," manager Bruce Bochy said of Bumgarner in his latest outing. "He just had some bad luck."

Bumgarner retired the first 13 Seattle batters before Mariners designated hitter Mark Trumbo was awarded a hit on a bad-hop grounder that bounced off the chest of Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford in the fifth.

Pirates' stingy pitching extends win streak

The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Chicago White Sox 3-2 Wednesday night for their seventh consecutive win, allowing two runs or fewer in each game.

In fact opponents are averaging a miniscule 0.71 runs per game against the Pirates during their win streak. The under is not surprisingly 6-1 over that stretch.

The Pirates close out their home-and-home with the Pale Hose Thursday night and are currently -140 road faves with a total at 7.5.

Padres' Myers to miss at least two months

OAKLAND, Calif. -- San Diego Padres center fielder/first baseman Wil Myers is scheduled to undergo surgery on his injured left wrist Thursday.

He is not expected to be able to resume baseball activities for eight weeks.

MLB roundup: Frazier's 13th-inning slam lifts Reds

CINCINNATI -- Todd Frazier's grand slam in the bottom of the 13th inning, his second homer of the night, lifted the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday at Great American Ball Park.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the 13th, Frazier launched Joakim Soria's 1-2 pitch an estimated 411 feet.

Detroit twice took the lead via homers, on first baseman Miguel Cabrera's three-run home run in the sixth, then again on pinch hitter Tyler Collins' solo shot in the eighth.

Frazier's game-ending shot was his 22nd homer of the season, tied for second in the major leagues.

Yankees 2, Marlins 1

NEW YORK -- Michael Pineda took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and New York held on for a victory over Miami.

Pineda pitched 6 2/3 innings and lost his bid at being involved in New York's 12th no-hitter when Christian Yelich opened the seventh by hitting a first-pitch fastball into the Yankees' bullpen.

Pineda gave up just the one hit while walking two and striking out nine.

Mariners 2, Giants 0

SEATTLE -- Felix Hernandez outdueled Madison Bumgarner as Seattle topped San Francisco.

Hernandez threw eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits, before left-hander Charlie Furbush and new closer Carson Smith finished off the win. Hernandez (10-3) gave up four hits, struck out five and walked two while throwing 106 pitches. It marked the third time in 14 starts this season that Hernandez did not allow a run.

Bumgarner (7-4) surrendered four hits and struck out nine but gave up two runs while taking the tough-luck loss. The Giants have failed to score a run in either of his past two starts.

Diamondbacks 3, Angels 2

PHOENIX -- Paul Goldschmidt had two hits, including his 19th home run, and Chase Anderson won his third consecutive decision as Arizona beat Los Angeles.

Goldschmidt homered in the first inning, and Anderson (3-1) limited the Angels to two runs in six innings.

Welington Castillo had two hits and a homer, and Yasmany Tomas added three hits, including his first triple as the Diamondbacks won for the fifth time in six games.

A's 16, Padres 2

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Billy Butler went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer, Jesse Chavez gave up one run over seven innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts, and Oakland crushed San Diego.

The A's amassed a season-high 20 hits and set a new high for runs. Ben Zobrist had a single, a double and a triple, drove in three runs and scored three times for the A's, who won their season-high-matching fourth consecutive game. Billy Burns went 3-for-5 and scored three runs.

The Padres lost their fourth consecutive game. They are 0-3 since firing manager Bud Black and 0-2 under interim manager Pat Murphy.

Rangers 5, Dodgers 3

LOS ANGELES -- Joey Gallo hit a two-run home run, Prince Fielder added a solo homer, and Wandy Rodriguez pitched five shutout innings to lead Texas past Los Angeles.

Fielder and third baseman Adam Rosales each had two of the Rangers' eight hits, with Fielder hitting his 11th home run of the season. Rougned Odor also drove in two runs.

Rodriguez (4-2) defused several potential scoring opportunities before leaving in the sixth inning. The 36-year-old veteran allowed three runs, nine hits and a walk while getting two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Rays 5, Nationals 0

WASHINGTON -- Steven Souza, Jr. had three hits, including a home run against his former team and four pitchers combined to allow just two hits as Tampa Bay beat Washington.

The first-place Rays have won five of their last six while the second-place Nationals have lost seven of their last 11 and are 6-10 this month.

Curt Casali had a career-high three hits with a homer for the Rays, who got a measure of revenge after allowing 23 hits in a 16-4 loss to Washington on Tuesday in Florida. It was the seventh shutout of the year for the Tampa Bay staff.

Orioles 6, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA -- Chris Parmelee homered for the third time in two games as Baltimore beat Philadelphia.

Travis Snider also homered for Baltimore, which beat the Phillies for the third day in a row and won for the 11th time in 13 games in all.

Freddy Galvis hit a three-run homer for Philadelphia, which dropped its ninth straight.

Blue Jays 8, Mets 0

TORONTO -- Kevin Pillar had a home run among his three hits and two RBIs and Danny Valencia added a three-run blast as Toronto defeated New York.

Drew Hutchison allowed four hits, one walk and no runs while striking out five in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win and snap the Mets' three-game winning streak.

New York's Jon Niese allowed seven hits, four walks and three runs in seven innings for his fifth straight loss. Niese, who last won a game on May 9, struck out six.

Braves 5, Red Sox 2

ATLANTA -- Nick Markakis tied a major league record for consecutive errorless games in the outfield, but it was at the plate where the right fielder came through for Atlanta.

Markakis, who has four RBIs in as many games, singled in the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning and the Braves defeated Boston.

Markakis has gone 392 games without an error, tying the record set by Darren Lewis from 1990 to 1994.

Pirates 3, White Sox 2

CHICAGO -- Jung Ho Kang's first-inning home run helped give Pittsburgh a lead it never surrendered in a victory over Chicago.

Kang's two-run homer, his fourth of the season, provided an early 3-0 advantage as the Pirates went on to their seventh straight victory and third in-a-row over the White Sox. Chicago dropped its sixth straight.

Pittsburgh's Jeff Locke worked six innings for the victory while Chicago's John Danks (3-7) suffered his third straight loss.

Cubs 17, Indians 0

CLEVELAND -- Kyle Schwarber went 4-for-5 in his first major league start, leading Chicago past Cleveland.

The Cubs exploded for 10 runs in the first three innings, and every Chicago player wound up with at least one hit in the team's 18-hit attack.

Kris Bryant hit a ninth-inning grand slam off Indians outfielder David Murphy, the second Cleveland position player to pitch in the inning. Ryan Raburn got two outs, and Murphy retired one batter. They combined to allow seven runs, all unearned.

Twins 3, Cardinals 1

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota got seven strong innings from Tommy Milone in a win over St. Louis.

Milone pitched seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out five for his first victory since April 16. It was Milone's second consecutive outing of seven innings and third in seven starts overall this season.

Twins closer Glen Perkins entered with two outs in the eighth inning and got the final four outs for his league-leading 23rd save in 23 opportunities.

Royals 10, Brewers 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Alcides Escobar drove in four runs and Joe Blanton threw five reliable innings in the Kansas City's victory over reeling Milwaukee.

Escobar broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple in a four-run eighth. His four RBIs matched a career best.

Lorenzo Cain contributed two extra-base hits, drove in a run and walked twice. He is 5-for-12 with two home runs and five RBIs in three games against the Brewers.

Astros 8, Rockies 4

DENVER -- Houston continued an unusual sort of slugging perfection when it hit four home runs and beat Colorado.

It was the 26th multi-homer game of the season for the Astros, and they are a franchise-record 26-0 in such contests. The previous record was a 22-game streak in 1994.

Carlos Correa hit a two-run shot in the first inning, and Preston Tucker hit a solo homer in the fifth. Jake Marisnick added a homer in the sixth, and Chris Carter went deep in the ninth.

Pirates cruising in Cole's interleague starts

The Pittsburgh Pirates have a record of 5-0 in Gerrit Cole's last five interleague starts heading into Thursday's meeting with the Chicago White Sox.

Cole is 5-1 in seven career starts in interleague matchups, including 1-0 this season. The righty tossed six innings of three-hit ball en route to a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers back in April.

The Pirates are 4-4 in eight interleague games so far this season. Cole and the Bucs are -129 faves against Jeff Samardzija and the Pale Hose (+119).

Hot under umpire Rackley calling this game Thursday

One of the league's hottest umpires, David Rackley, will be calling Thursday's game between the Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies at Coors Field Thursday afternoon.

Rackley has an Over/Under record of 2-7-3 on the season. That mark is second best in the bigs among umpires with at least nine games worked behind home plate.

Furthermore, the under has gone 5-0-2 in Rackley's last seven games behind home plate.

There has been an average of 6.42 runs scored per game in his appearances with 14.6 strikeouts and 5.8 walks per game. He has a strike percentage of 63.81.

Padres won't like seeing Hamari behind home plate

The San Diego Padres are 0-5 in their last five ball games with umpire Adam Hamari working behind home plate. Hamari will be behind the dish calling pitching in the meeting between the Friars and Oakland A's Thursday afternoon.

Home teams have the slight edge when Hamari is calling pitches, posting a record of 8-6 on the season. There has been an average of 8.86 runs scored in his games so far this season, with the Over/Under count coming in at 9-5.

Ian Kennedy is probable for the visiting Padres (+146), while the A's are expected to counter with Kendall Graveman (-159). Oddsmakers have the total at 8.

Chance of rain at Citizens Bank Park

There is a 44 percent chance of rain and a five mile per hour wind blowing out to left field at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, where the Phillies host a matinee game against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles are currently -160 road favorites and send right-hander Bud Norris (2-4, 8.29 ERA) to the mound to take on righty Sean O'Sullivan (1-5, 5.08 ERA) of the Phillies. The total currently sits at 8.5 runs.

Road woes continue for struggling Red Sox

Thanks to a 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox have continued their dreadful play away from home. The Sox have now lost seven-straight games on the road and 11 of their past 12.

The BoSox will finish up a small two-game set in Atlanta Thursday and head to Kansas City for three games against the Royals before heading back to Boston.

Clay Buchholz will try to turn things around for the Red Sox, who are -115 road faves Thursday. The Braves will count with Shelby Miller.

Twins heating up for Under bettors

The Under has cashed in four consecutive Minnesota Twins' games heading into their afternoon tilt with the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday.

The Twins are finishing up a home-and-home set with the Cardinals with two games at Busch Stadium finishing under the total earlier this week, and Wednesday's opener at Target Field cashing for Under bettors as well.

Even though the clubs have not met frequently over the years, the Under has gone 12-0-1 in the past 13 meetings between the Cards and Twins.

Jaime Garcia is slated to take the mound against Mike Pelfrey Thursday afternoon, and oddsmakers have a total of 8 on the board.

Game of the Day: Rays at Nationals
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Washington Nationals (+118, 7)

Steven Souza Jr. is only hitting .222, but his power numbers have provided quite a boost in his first season with the Tampa Bay Rays. Souza, who has reached base eight times in 13 at-bats during the series and belted his team-leading 13th homer Wednesday, looks to punish his former team again when the Rays visit the Washington Nationals on Thursday.

Souza is the only Tampa Bay player with more than seven blasts and he went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the 5-0 victory Wednesday. The American League East-leading Rays send All-Star Game candidate Chris Archer to the mound Thursday in an attempt to win the four-game, home-and-home interleague set after taking two of the first three. Washington fell to 6-13 in its last 19 contests and welcomes back right-hander Doug Fister from the disabled list to oppose Archer. Bryce Harper is 13-for-28 in his last eight games for the Nationals, who managed two hits Wednesday after recording 23 just 24 hours earlier.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, Sun Sports (Tampa Bay), MASN (Washington)

LINE HISTORY: Oddsmakers opened the Nats +108 before adjusting to +118. The total opened at 7.

INJURY REPORT: Rays - RP Andrew Bellatti (DL-Shoulder), 1B James Lonely (Out-Finger) Nationals - N/A

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Chris Archer (7-4, 2.00 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Doug Fister (2-2, 4.31)

Archer allowed three runs over seven innings last time out against the Chicago White Sox while extending his unbeaten streak to seven games with a no-decision. The North Carolina native boasts 113 strikeouts – 51 in his last five outings – over 90 innings and has held opponents to a .196 batting average in 2014. Harper is 1-for-2 with a walk against Archer, who is 5-0 on the road with a 0.51 ERA but lost his only career meeting with Washington.

Fister (forearm) returns to the rotation for the first time in month after pitching six shutout innings while allowing two hits and striking out four at Double-A Harrisburg in his last rehab start on Friday. The 31-year-old California native yielded one earned run or fewer in three of seven starts this season, but has given up 46 hits in 39 2/3 frames overall. Evan Longoria is 3-for-10 versus Fister, who is 2-3 with a 2.88 ERA in six appearances (five starts) against the Rays.

TRENDS:

* Rays are 6-1 in their last seven road games.
* Rays are 8-1 in Archers last nine starts as a road favorite.
* Nationals are 1-6 in their last seven home games.
* Over is 5-1 in Fisters last six starts overall.

CONSENSUS: Fifty-four percent of users are backing the Nationals.

Thursday's Tip Sheet

June 18, 2015

Tigers at Reds – 7:05 PM EST

Cincinnati had plenty of issues in interleague play to start the season, losing eight of their first nine matchups against American League foes. The Reds held off the Tigers on Tuesday night, 5-2 at Comerica Park to bust out of their interleague funk, followed by a dramatic 8-4 triumph in 13 innings on Wednesday at home thanks to a walk-off grand slam off the bat of third baseman Todd Frazier.

In the finale at the Great American Ballpark, Justin Verlander (0-0, 3.60 ERA) makes his second start of the season for the Tigers. Verlander’s anticipated 2015 debut against Cleveland last Saturday resulted in a no-decision, as the former Cy Young Award winner tossed five innings and scattered three hits and two earned runs. The Tigers posted an impressive 4-1 record in Verlander’s five interleague starts last season, while Detroit is currently on a 2-6 skid away from Comerica Park.

Mike Leake (3-4, 4.35 ERA) has struggled at home this season for the Reds, as Cincinnati is 2-4 in his six starts at the Great American Ballpark. The Reds are just 1-6 in Leake’s last seven starts overall, with the only victory coming against the dreadful Phillies earlier this month. Cincinnati has quietly played well at home recently, winning eight of its last 10 at the GABP, while scoring at least five runs eight time in this stretch.

Pirates at White Sox – 8:10 PM EST

Pittsburgh’s pitching dominance has lifted the Bucs of late, tossing shutouts in five of the past seven games. The Pirates blanked the White Sox in a pair of victories at PNC Park, while Pittsburgh’s three first inning runs held up in Wednesday’s 3-2 triumph at Chicago as a short favorite. In spite of the three wins over the Sox, the Pirates own a 4-4 record against American League opponents, but send out their ace tonight looking for the sweep.

Gerrit Cole (10-2, 1.71 ERA) is garnering early Cy Young consideration for the Pirates, coming off seven consecutive quality starts. Cole hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last two road outings, tossing seven innings each in victories at Atlanta and San Francisco. The Pirates continue to cash ‘unders’ with Cole on the mound, putting together a 7-0-1 mark to the ‘under’ in the right-hander’s last eight trips to the hill.

The White Sox attempt to snap their six-game losing streak behind the right arm of Jeff Samardzija (4-4, 4.84 ERA), who is winless in his last three starts. Samardzija has allowed 18 earned runs in his past 19.1 innings, in spite of a quality outing in his past start, a 5-4 loss at Tampa Bay. The former Notre Dame standout suffered his first home loss in five starts this season against Detroit earlier this month after the Sox blew an early 4-1 lead in a 6-4 defeat.

Rangers at Dodgers – 10:10 PM EST

Texas began the season with a dreadful 7-15 record, but the Rangers have turned things around to vault into second place inside the AL West. The Rangers took their third straight from the Dodgers, shocking Clayton Kershaw as a +250 underdog in a 5-3 victory last night, limiting Los Angeles to six runs through the first three games against Los Angeles. Texas improved to an impressive 21-14 away from Arlington and 13-5 the past 18 games overall.

The Dodgers will try to avoid the sweep tonight behind Zack Greinke (5-2, 1.95 ERA), who is winless in his last two outings. Greinke has allowed two earned runs or less in eight of his past 10 starts, but his offense has plated two runs or fewer in five of his last six outings. Los Angeles is 4-4 in Greinke’s eight home starts this season, compared to a 12-4 record at Dodger Stadium in 2014.

Anthony Ranaudo (0-1, 32.40 ERA) makes the spot start for the Rangers tonight in place of Colby Lewis, who was pushed back to Friday. Ranaudo, who spent last season with the Red Sox, is making his second start of the season, looking to bounce back after allowing six earned runs in less than two innings of a 10-2 home loss to the Angels in April. For what it’s worth, Ranaudo picked up a pair of road underdog wins last August at Cincinnati and Tampa Bay, but has pitched past the sixth innings just once in eight career starts.

Giants at Mariners – 10:10 PM EST

As expected, runs were at a premium in Wednesday’s duel between Felix Hernandez and Madison Bumgarner as Seattle blanked San Francisco, 2-0. The Mariners won for just the second time in their last 10 tries at Safeco Field, while cashing their sixth consecutive ‘under’ at home. Seattle searches for back-to-back home wins for the first time since mid-May, sending out a prized rookie to the mound for the finale.

Mike Montgomery (1-1, 1.89 ERA) is living up to the billing for Seattle, allowing four earned runs in his first three starts, while shutting down the Astros in his last outing as a +120 underdog. The southpaw is winless in his first two outings at Safeco Field, failing to beat the Yankees and Rays, but he received four runs of support in those defeats.

The Giants counter with Ryan Vogelsong (4-5, 4.81 ERA), who has dropped three consecutive starts. The right-hander has given up 12 earned runs during this skid, while lasting less than four innings in a 4-2 home defeat to Arizona his last time out. Vogelsong is 3-1 in his past four road outings, which includes underdog victories over Milwaukee and Cincinnati. The Giants hope to get their offense going after losing five of their last six, while scoring one run or fewer four times in this stretch.

Pitching In: Mop-up duty on mound for 6 position players

June 18, 2015

Thanks to several blowouts in baseball the last two nights, a whopping six position players were summoned to the mound to save their bullpens during garbage time. Here's a look at how those hitters fared when asked to pitch in on mop-up duty:

JEFF FRANCOUER

The Phillies outfielder threw 48 pitches over the final two innings of a 19-3 loss to Baltimore on Tuesday night. He retired the side in the seventh, the first 1-2-3 inning for Philadelphia. In the eighth, though, he gave up a homer to Ryan Flaherty, walked three, hit a batter with a pitch and allowed two runs.

An embarrassing night for the Phillies got worse when, in the eighth, pitching coach Bob McClure tried to call the bullpen to warm up a pitcher and the phone was off the hook. McClure had to wave a white towel from the dugout to get the attention of his relievers.

''I kind of got to experience everything that a pitcher probably experiences over a year in two innings,'' Francoeur said.

JAKE ELMORE

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash turned to the utility man in the eighth inning of a 16-4 loss to Washington on Tuesday. Elmore allowed a solo homer to Wilson Ramos among three Nationals hits.

NICK FRANKLIN

The infielder followed Elmore to the mound in the ninth inning for the Rays. Franklin also gave up three hits - including a two-run homer by Ramos.

''Cash asked me if I could throw strikes, and I told him I probably could,'' Franklin said.

He didn't walk a batter, but Franklin plunked Danny Espinosa with a pitch.

''They did pick us up quite a bit because it kept two (other) guys from pitching. It kept us that much fresher going into the game (Wednesday),'' Cash said.

ALEXI AMARISTA

The starting shortstop for San Diego, Amarista homered in the sixth inning of a 16-2 loss at Oakland on Wednesday and needed just two pitches to retire the only batter he faced in the eighth. By getting Billy Burns on a fly to right, Amarista distinguished himself as the most effective Padres pitcher of the night. ''I'm really happy about it,'' he said through a translator.

RYAN RABURN

Cleveland's designated hitter for the first eight innings Wednesday night, Raburn got two outs in the ninth and reached 88 mph on the ballpark radar gun. He was charged with two unearned runs, one hit and one walk in a 17-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Raburn threw 25 pitches and was pulled with a 2-0 count to David Ross after grimacing during a delivery.

''Ryan's arm was getting a little cranky,'' Indians manager Terry Francona said. ''Getting in that situation doesn't feel good. It's not a lot of fun.''

DAVID MURPHY

Francona brought in a left-hander (his left fielder) to replace Raburn, who exchanged broad smiles with Murphy as the crowd roared its approval. Murphy was hurt by an error behind him and eventually got the final out of the inning. But first, he gave up two hits, a walk and five more unearned runs - including a grand slam by rookie slugger Kris Bryant.

''If you're going to give them up, give them up big, right?'' said Murphy, who topped out at 78 mph.

Just like Raburn, it was the second career pitching appearance for Murphy.

''I'm just trying to show my versatility, which is why I was pumped when I got the call,'' he said, chuckling. ''Ryan couldn't get the job done, so I had to come in and bail him out. I was trying to pound the strike zone, but these are big league hitters, not some guys like you'd face in high school.''

Fister returns to the mound for Nationals Thursday

Washington Nationals right-handed starter Doug Fister returns to the rotation Thursday night after missing more than a month with a forearm strain.

Fister's first assignment isn't easy as he goes up against Chris Archer and the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays, who are currently -121 favorites.

Fister was 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA in seven starts before going down with the injury. Meanwhile, Archer has pitched to a 1.20 ERA and with 43 strikeouts to just 1 walk in his last four starts.

Report: Warriors will try to trade Lee

Jun 17, 2015

The NBA champion Golden State Warriors reportedly plan to trade forward David Lee, whose playing time no longer matched his contract.

The team and player are working to find a new team for Lee, ESPN reported Wednesday.

Lee, a former All-Star who had become a bench player, is set to make $15.4 million next season at the end of his six-year, $79.5 million contract.

The Warriors would like to clear salary-cap room to re-sign restricted free agent Draymond Green, who replaced Lee in the starting lineup.

Lee, 32, averaged 7.9 points while playing in just 49 games last season. In the postseason, he played in just 13 of 21 games, averaging 3.1 points and eight minutes.

NBA notebook: LeBron James faces another decision

Jun 17, 2015

Fans and front-office personnel are saving the date: June 29 is the day LeBron James can opt out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

James returned to Northeast Ohio in July 2014, leaving the Miami Heat four years after bolting Cleveland in an excruciating public departure aired by ESPN and titled "The Decision."

"I haven't thought about next season at all," James said. "My family is happy. That makes my job a lot easier. For the fans, I go out and try to just leave it all on the floor and hope it's enough."

"He has become a great leader of this team," coach David Blatt said. "He should be proud of what he did this year. I thought he had one of the best seasons of his career, and I'm glad that I could be one of the guys that helped him do that."

---The 2015 NBA Finals is the highest-rated NBA Finals ever on ABC, based on market ratings from Nielsen.

The Warriors beat the Cavaliers 105-97 in Game 6 on Tuesday night, securing the franchise's fourth championship and first in 40 years.

The six-game series averaged a 13.9 overnight rating, which is up 31 percent from a 10.6 last year (Miami-San Antonio).

---Charlotte Hornets guard Gerald Henderson exercised his player option for the 2015-16 season.

Henderson, selected by Charlotte with the 12th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, played in a team-high 80 games (72 starts) last season and averaged 12.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 28.9 minutes per game.

In six seasons with Charlotte, Henderson has played in 391 games with averages of 12.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 27.5 minutes.

---The Chicago Bulls named San Antonio Spurs assistant Jim Boylen as associate head coach Wednesday on Fred Hoiberg's new staff.

Hoiberg wanted Boyle for his defensive coaching prowess and to help him make the move up from college. Hoiberg left Iowa State to become the Bulls' 19th coach on June 1.

Boylen, 50, comes to Chicago with 29 years of coaching experience, including 17 years of service in the NBA. He spent last two seasons on Gregg Popovich's staff in San Antonio.

Duncan adviser alleged culprit in missing $25 million

Jun 18, 2015

San Antonio Spurs power forward Tim Duncan was allegedly schemed out of $25 million by longtime financial adviser Charles Banks.

Bloomberg reported the 18-year veteran and future Hall of Fame big man lost more than 10 percent of his career earnings.

"Luckily I had a long career and made good money," Duncan said in the report. "This is a big chunk, but it's not going to change my life in any way. It's not going to make any decisions for me."

Banks is facing a lawsuit that seeks damages of more than $1 million, including allegations that he kept 20 percent of a $7.5 million sports merchandising agreement without consent.

Duncan is weighing his on-court future this offseason. He signed a one-year deal to stay with the Spurs in July 2014 and made $10 million while appearing in his 15th All-Star Game.

Duncan divorced in 2013, when the financial questions first arose. Banks has denied wrongdoing.

Dodgers' offense remains hit and miss

Jun 18, 2015

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers' latest loss revealed the split personality of their struggling offense.

On the one hand, the Dodgers continue to lead the National League with 84 home runs after left fielder Scott Van Slyke hit a two-run drive in the sixth inning of a 5-3 loss to the Texas Rangers.

On the other hand, the Dodgers continue to have difficulty generating runs without the long ball and exploiting available opportunities. In three of the first four innings, Los Angeles had runners in scoring position yet failed to bring them home.

In their first 28 games, the Dodgers averaged 5.1 runs each contest and compiled a team average of .262. In 17 of the past 30 games, however, Los Angeles scored no more than two runs.

Despite the recent decline, Los Angeles still leads the National League with 204 extra-base hits, a .334 on-base percentage, a .434 slugging percentage and a 768 OPS, besides the 84 homers.

"We're not playing as well as we're capable of," said manager Don Mattingly, whose team lost each of its past three games four of the past five. "Things really aren't going the way we want at this moment."

Red Sox 2B Pedroia hurting again

Jun 18, 2015

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia is known for his grit and is again playing at less than full strength.

Pedroia, 31, has swelling in his right knee and after he underwent season-ending surgery to repair his wrist last September, expect concern in the cluhouse.

"It’s one of those things," Pedroia said, "where I went out, took BP ... ran around and (it) feels good, but then game time is a little different."

Pedroia played through hand and wrist injuries for parts of the past three seasons. He is batting .307 entering Thursday and confirmed he underwent treatment to alleviate the swelling.

"It will be fine," he said. "No worries. I will be fine."

Pedroia's 2014 season ended with him hitting .278 with seven home runs, 53 RBIs and six stolen bases. He is signed through the 2021 season and is owed $96.5 million over that span.
