Diamond dogs, unders cash for bettors Wednesday

Underdogs and the under were the wagers to make in Major League Baseball action Wednesday, with pups going 10-5 straight up and the under having a huge night at 13-2.

The 66.67 percent success rate for the underdogs is huge considering they are cashing at a rate of 45.93 percent this season.

As for the unders, it has been a decent week with them going 51-39, bringing the season average up to 48.24 percent.

Indians and White Sox make it 13 unders in a row

Well, we hope you've been paying attention.

After the Cleveland Indians 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday night, the teams played to the under for the 13th consecutive time when facing each other.

The under is also a crazy 21-3 between the AL Central rivals dating back to last season.

The teams will try for 14 unders in a row when they continue complete their four-game series Thursday night in Chicago.

The Indians will call on righty Danny Salazer (4.06 ERA, 5-1 O/U) to start, while the White Sox counter with lefty John Danks (4.66 ERA, 1-5-1 O/U).

Bumgarner has gotten the best of Kershaw

Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants have the upperhand on Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers as San Fran has won the past four meetings with those two pitchers starting.

Those four Giants win has seen Bumgarner pitch 28.1 innings while only surrendering five runs and striking out 31. Kershaw though has not been bad, while only allowing nine runs in 28.0 innings of work while registering 33 K's.

The Giants are currently +116 home dogs with a total sitting at a very low 6.0 runs.

Marlins still costing bettors money

The Miami Marlins fell 6-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday night, making it six losses in a row despite being the favorite in all six games.

The Marlins closed as -126 favorites for last night's game and the consecutive losses as favorites have plummeted them down the money standings. The Marlins are the second worst money team in the bigs at $-1124.

The Marlins will be favored once again Thursday as they close out their series with the D-Backs. Mat Latos and the Marlins are currently -141 favorites over Arizona's Archie Bradley.

Game of the Day: Rockets at Warriors
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors (-10.5, 220)
Warriors lead series 1-0

Center Dwight Howard is listed as questionable as the Houston Rockets attempt to even the Western Conference finals when they visit the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. Howard played just 26 minutes in Game 1 after suffering a left knee injury and an MRI exam performed Wednesday determined the injury was a sprain.

The Rockets had to use a smaller lineup for much of the opening game and that played into the hands of the Warriors, who recovered from a 16-point, second-quarter deficit to post a 110-106 victory. NBA MVP Stephen Curry had 34 points and knocked down six 3-pointers to fuel Golden State and has made 20 3-pointers over the last three games. NBA runner-up James Harden was stellar for the Rockets with 28 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and four steals and has scored at least 20 points in all 13 games this postseason. “Game 1 slipped away from us,” Harden told reporters. “We had several opportunities to win the game, didn’t happen, so I think we’ll look at some film, we’ll go from there and correct some things basically that were on us and just be better in Game 2.”

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: Most books, both online and in Vegas, opened the line at GS -10/220. The spread has since been bet to GS -10.5.

INJURY REPORT: Rockets - C Dwight Howard (Ques-Knee), G K.J. McDaniels (Out-Wrist) Warriors - C Ognjen Kuzmic (Ques-Ankle)

ABOUT THE ROCKETS: Howard suffered what was originally termed a bruised knee when teammate Josh Smith came crashing into his leg and he said afterwards that the injury was “very painful.” Undersized Clint Capela filled in but Houston coach Kevin McHale is aware he needs Howard on the floor for his club to have a chance at knocking off top-seeded Golden State. “Hopefully Dwight is healthy and we can play big,” McHale told reporters. “We didn’t have that option with Dwight out.”

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: While Curry continues to dazzle in the postseason and lead the way, forward Draymond Green is a valuable piece to the puzzle. The 6-7 Green had 13 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in the opener and saw a lot of time at center and can also guard players on the perimeter. “Draymond is one of the best defensive players in the league because he can guard low-post guys and perimeter guys,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr told reporters. “He can switch onto James Harden, he can guard Dwight Howard. Doesn’t mean he’s always going to get a stop, but he’s always going to put up a fight, and he’s got a chance.”

TRENDS:

*Rockets are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
*Warriors are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games following a S.U. win.
*Over is 7-1 in Rockets last 8 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
*Under is 7-1 in Warriors last 8 overall.

CONSENSUS: 66.35 percent of users are backing the Rockets with 55 percent on the under.

Warriors slumping ATS with Capers as ref

The Golden State Warriors have gone just 1-5 against the spread in the regular season and playoffs when James Capers has been a part of the officiating crew.

Along with Monty McCutchen and John Goble, Capers will be working Game 2 between the Warriors and Houston Rockets Thursday night.

The Warriors' only ATS win this season was a 123-110 win as 6.5-point faves at the Dallas Mavericks on April 4. They failed to cover against the San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics (twice), Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies.

What bettors need to know: Ducks at Blackhawks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at Chicago Blackhawks (-130, 5)
Series tied 1-1

Two days after stealing home-ice advantage - and evening the series - with a marathon triple-overtime victory, the Chicago Blackhawks look to put it to good use when they host the Anaheim Ducks in Game 3 of the Western Conference final on Thursday. Chicago jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Tuesday before squandering it, needing a stellar performance from Corey Crawford (60 saves) and a goal by Marcus Kruger at 16:12 of the third overtime to avoid falling into an 0-2 series hole.

An incredible effort by Andrew Shaw in the second extra session nearly gave the Blackhawks the victory, but his tally correctly was disallowed as he took a page out of the playbook of Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire and deliberately head-butted the puck past Frederik Andersen. The Anaheim netminder played nearly as well as Crawford, turning aside 53 shots, and Andrew Cogliano began the Ducks' comeback before Corey Perry continued his trend of scoring a goal in alternate games by knotting the contest late in the second period. Anaheim's third-ranked power play was unable to cash in, failing on five opportunities to drop to 0-for-6 in the series as the Ducks suffered their first home loss of the postseason (6-1). Anaheim was held to fewer than three goals for just the second time in this year's playoffs, with the first being a 2-1 triumph over Winnipeg in Game 2 of their first-round matchup.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVA

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Blackhawks between -135 and -130 with a total of 5.

INJURY REPORT: Ducks - D Sheldon Souray (Out-Wrist) Blackhawks - D Michal Rozsival (Out-Ankle)

ABOUT THE DUCKS: Perry began the postseason with a two-goal effort against the Jets and has scored in every second game since. He netted his eighth of the playoffs on Tuesday, putting him among the league leaders in both tallies and points (16). Captain Ryan Getzlaf tops all players in assists this postseason as he notched his 12th on Perry's goal in Game 2.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Shaw, who opened the scoring Tuesday 2:16 into the contest with the first of his team's two power-play goals and had several other good chances, knew his soccer-style goal was in violation of league rule 78.5 - which states a tally would be disallowed "when the puck has been directed, batted or thrown into the net by an attacking player other than with a stick." Regardless, the 23-year-old would have liked to have seen the goal stand. "I understand (the rule), but I think if anyone can ever pull that off, it should still be a goal," Shaw said. "I mean, at that point, you react in the moment and try to get it in."

TRENDS:

*Road team is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.
*Blackhawks are 5-0 in their last 5 games playing on 1 days rest.
*Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings in Chicago.
*Over is 4-0 in Ducks last 4 road games.

CONSENSUS: 61 percent of users are backing the Blackhawks with 62.7 percent on the over.

Ducks look to remain hot away from the Pond

The Anaheim Ducks are a solid 3-1 on the road during the postseason, and dating further back they are 7-1 in their past eight road games.

The Ducks have outscored their opposition 27-18 during that span with three games, including their one loss, going to overtime. Only two of those seven wins have seen the Ducks by more than one goal.

Anaheim is +118 when they travel to the United Center Thursday.

Lightning torch Lundqvist once again

New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has allowed five or more goals just six times during the 2014-15 regular season and postseason, but after Wednesday's 6-5 loss in the Eastern Conference Final, four of those games have come against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Wednesday's scoreline marked the second-consecutive game in the series that the Lightning put six past the Swedish netminder. Tampa Bay tallied five in a 5-1 win against the Blushirts back on Nov. 17 and another five in a 6-3 win on Dec. 1.

The Lightning have a 2-1 lead in the series with Game 4 slated to go Friday evening in Florida.

NBA Playoffs: 3 adjustments Rockets need vs. Warriors in Game 2

Houston trails the Golden State Warriors 1-0 headed into Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals on Thursday night. Teams with home-court advantage that take a 2-0 lead have won the conference finals 94 percent of the time. That's history, not predictive, but it's certainly not a great sign. Here are three adjustments that the Rockets need to make if they're going to get a split in the Bay in Game 2 headed back to Clutch City.

1. The Steph Curry Conundrum: On Wednesday, I looked at how the Rockets allowed Steph Curry to get wide open looks, which Houston can in no way afford. What's interesting is the Rockets' only comments after Game 1 on Tuesday, and after Wednesday's practice on the issue were about offensive issues leading to that. Particularly turnovers.

"To be honest, when we started turning the ball over, that's when they got going," Corey Brewer said of the difference between the Rockets' great start and the collapse after building a 16-point lead.

"In the [fast] break, you've got to recognize where he is at, and you've got to get to him," coach Kevin McHale said. "I thought we made three mistakes on Curry on just transition where he got open baskets, and we've just got to be better on that."

That's covered in the above-linked piece on Curry as well, but as bad as those mistakes were, several were based on misfortune (one happened when Josh Smith collided with Dwight Howard, putting both men on the deck, another when Ariza got tangled up at the other end). A bigger issue: Instead of chasing Curry, Houston's guards were trying to pop "over" off-ball screens to beat Curry to his spot which allows Curry to shorten his curl and catch-and-shoot with no off-ball switch. That leads to wide open Curry corner 3-pointers, AKA pure doom.

"He's one of the toughest players to guard in the league," Pablo Prigioni said Wednesday. "His footwork, plus his catch-and-shoot is so quick. There's not one rule, some of it's just making little adjustments, following instincts. There's not one thing we have to do, we have to do many things. We've got to do a better job making him uncomfortable."

2. Stay composed: The Rockets took a lot away from that 16-point lead they had. It seemed to be proof they could hang with the Warriors. Despite the loss, Houston had an opportunity to win and blew it (in a matter of minutes) instead thinking it was some sort of fool's gold.

"The crowd is great here," Prigioni said of Oracle Arena, "but when we were up double-digits, they got into a little bit of 'Wait, what's happening here?' So we can affect the crowd too. We've just got to stay composed."

"[In that first-quarter run], we were all cohesive, we were playing together. We weren't making mistakes and, we weren't turning the ball over," Brewer said.

There was a lot of talk from McHale about offense, but the Rockets' might stand a better chance at focusing more on the defensive end, being more patient, and letting James Harden control possessions.

3. Life in the fast lane: The up-and-down, chaotic energy of Game 1 was enjoyed by both sides. Both teams said Wednesday that's the pace where they're comfortable. But who's really benefitting?

Andrew Bogut has some sort of cold that he said was really bothering him Wednesday. A big man with a head cold trying to get up and down the floor is a pretty tough deal. Then again, the Warriors' small lineups were successful for the most part. Or were they?

Overall, the lineup featuring Curry, Thompson, Shaun Livingston, Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green was plus-15, but most of that came in the Warriors' second-quarter deluge in which Livingston scored 10 points in seven minutes. Overall in the second half, Warriors small-ball lineups with Green at center were minus-3.

McHale said after Game 1 he doesn't want to go small, he wants to stay big, but Dwight Howard's injury may compromise that. (More on that here.)

Are the Rockets really comfortable playing fast, vs. this team? The Warriors seemed enthused by the opportunity to run after the slugfest vs. Memphis, and the two teams tied in fast break points. Can Houston get back consistently in an up-and-down-game? They couldn't in Game 1, but they attributed that to turnovers. It just seems odd that Houston continues to believe they can win a shootout with a team defined by its stock of shooters.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Daily Picks: Weary Blackhawks return to home ice

Anaheim Ducks at Chicago Blackhawks, 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, Game 3

Series tied 1-1

After a marathon in Game 2 that featured three overtimes, the Ducks and Blackhawks each have to hope the players' bodies have recovered enough for what is sure to be another grueling contest as the series shifts back to Chicago. With only one day off in between games, which included a long flight for both teams, Game 3 is going to be a challenge for either club.

It could be particularly difficult for the Blackhawks and their depleted defense. Each of the top four defensemen played more than 45 minutes in Game 2. They won the game, but the miles that contest had to put on those players, particularly Duncan Keith who played nearly 50 full minutes in the game, is cause for concern. That's especially because they're going to have to play a lot again.

With the depth the Ducks boast throughout their lineup, there's really no break in there for Chicago's defense. All four lines can score and five of the six defensemen are true offensive threats. That forces Joel Quenneville to play his bottom two defensemen as sparingly as possible.

Kyle Cumiskey held his own in his first playoff game with the Blackhawks, but veteran Kimmo Timonen was the hockey equivalent of a tackling dummy in Game 2. Quenneville doesn't seem to have a whole lot of faith in another defense option in David Rundblad and the team's top defensive prospects -- Trevor van Riemsdyk and Stephen Johns -- are both injured. Creativity in defensive deployment in Game 3, with Chicago owning the last change, is going to be key to helping the blue line maximize its usage.

Chicago getting the last change is also going to allow Quenneville to get Jonathan Toews away from Ryan Kesler a little bit more. Toews had an assist and five shots on goal in the marathon Game 2 and has won the possession battle against Kesler, but those are still hard shifts. Also, it keeps Toews away from defending against Anaheim's top line.

It's going to be more interesting to see how Bruce Boudreau matches lines with Quenneville having the advantage of last change. The Ducks definitely were getting the matchups they wanted over two games, particularly with Kesler vs. Toews.

The other two guys who will be worth watching in this game rather closely are the goaltenders. Corey Crawford and Frederik Andersen put in a heck of a lot of work in Game 3. Crawford finished the contest with 60 saves over 116:12 of action, while Andersen posted 53 stops. Both were spectacular in overtime. The relatively tight turnaround between games puts a lot of strain on them individually. The goalie who recovered the best is probably going to have the best game. It's possible neither shows any ill effects, but if this game goes long again, it's something worth keeping an eye on.

The Ducks have a big opportunity here even though they're going into the United Center, where no visiting team has won this postseason. It's a tough place for visitors, but if the Blackhawks are at all tired, the Ducks can continue to wear the top four defenders down. Anaheim's minutes distribution in Game 2 should make them fresher in Game 3, in theory, so that's something they absolutely have to exploit.

Chicago's advantage of last change and just how good they've been at United Center so far makes them tough to pick against in this one.

Pick: Blackhawks 3, Ducks 2
