Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Golden State is 52-7 when Andrew Bogut plays, 9-6 when he doesn't.

-- Average major league salary will be over $4M this year for first time.

-- On top of that, ballplayers get $100.50 a day in meal money on the road.

-- Serious question: why do college football teams practice in the spring?

-- Gregg Marshall has won nine league titles in 17 years as a head coach.

-- It is supposed to be 61 in Albany tomorrow; last time it was above 50 was December 27. This is not an April Fools' joke, at least I hope it isn't.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Happy April Fools' Day!!!!

13) Cubs sent star prospect Kris Bryant to AAA, so they can keep him under team control for another year down the road; thats their choice, but don't tell me you're trying to win if you send one of your best guys to the minors, even if only for two or three weeks. How many pennant races come down to the last week or the last day of the season?

12) Mark McLemore played 19 years in the big leagues, hitting .259 with a .349 on-base percentage in 7,239 plate appearances, so he knows a lot and is now a TV analyst for the Rangers, but he claimed the Cubs sending Bryant down was "so he could work on some things", which is total BS. McLemore has kind of a condescending tone that a lot of former athletes have-- he should lose it if he wants to be good on television.

11) Does every NBA team visit the White House? The 76ers were there this week; think that practice will continue after the 2016 election?

10) Miami 60, Temple 57-- Teams combined to go 8-40 from arc in brickfest that Temple led by five at half. Miami played without PG Rodriguez for third game in a row, which will help their young players next season.

9) Stanford 67, Old Dominion 60-- Cardinal led 25-4, blew the lead, then pulled away late; ODU sub Ross was 7-7, rest of team was 14-54, with star Freeman a 6-24 disaster. Stanford-Miami is your NIT final Thursday night.

8) 7,183 fans at Madison Square Garden for that twinbill; it is funny that the media refers to MSG as the "mecca of basketball", when they had 5,583 fans in Flagstaff, Arizona for the NJIT-Northern Arizona game, and Dayton annually puts 10,000+ fans in their arena for the NCAA play-in games.

7) 35 of the 99 golfers at The Masters this week didn't go to college; of the 64 who did, six went to Georgia. No other school has more than three.

6) I'm not criticizing DePaul for re-hiring Dave Leitao, but it is ludicrous that the Blue Demons paid a search firm to find a new coach, then came back with the name of a guy who coached that same team ten years ago.
What exactly do athletic directors do? Go on the Interweb, look up names of some good teams and find out who the assistant coaches are-- its not hard!!!!

5) Turner Sports needs to promote play-by-play guy Kevin Calabro to a more prominent role; he is very, very good. Calabro was the Sonics' announcer when they played in Seattle- he does work on the Pac-12 Network and does stuff on ESPN Radio but he is so much better than most of the play-by-play guys that work hoops now.

4) Baltimore Ravens signed QB Matt Schaub to back up Joe Flacco, which is a sure sign of the QB shortage the NFL has right now.

3) San Diego hired alum Lamont Smith to replace the fired Bill Grier as its coach; Smith was a recruiter at New Mexico, won't be as good a tactician as Grier is, but he'll get better players. Toreros' brass must be tired of getting whacked by San Diego State every December, then being a middling team in a pretty good WCC. We'll see.

2) Seahawks are really going to let Russell Wilson play out his rookie contract, with chance he could eventually walk as a free agent? Why would you purposely tick off your starting QB? Wilson walked out on NC State once, he'll do it again. You don't want to go hunting for a new QB in this day and age.

1) Remember, its April Fools Day!!!! Don't believe everything you hear today, except in this space, of course.....

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Letdown spot

Opening Day is a big deal for MLB clubs and brings with it plenty of jitters for Big League teams, some more than others. The Oakland Athletics seem to let those season debut butterflies get the best of them, losing 10 straight games on Opening Day. Oakland kicked off last year’s campaign with a 2-0 loss to Cleveland at home.
The A’s have been outscored 50-13 in that 10-season Opening Day drought. Oakland has had the misfortune of beginning the season against the Seattle Mariners and their staff ace Felix Hernandez in half of those games, including four straight years from 2010 to 2013. This time around, Oakland opens the 2015 season at home to the Texas Rangers Monday. Can they avoid another Opening Day letdown?

Lookahead spot

The Chicago Bulls are clinging to third place in the Eastern Conference, just a game up on Toronto in the standings. The Bulls have a monster matchup ahead on the schedule this weekend, visiting LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Easter Sunday. But before then, the Bulls have a home date versus the Detroit Pistons Friday.
With the holiday weekend, the Bulls will be trying to cram in as much family time as they can around these games, which can often leave players unfocused – especially when you’re up against a non-contender like Detroit and staring down a showdown with the Cavs. The Pistons knocked off the Bulls 107-91 on March 21 and won 100-91 on February 20 with both games coming in Motown.

Schedule spot

The Washington Capitals are fighting to stay in the postseason picture, currently sitting in seventh in the Eastern Conference standings. They’re just three points ahead of No. 8 Boston and six points past Ottawa. The Capitals have a home stand against Carolina Tuesday then hit the road for a short three-game trip that could make or break their season.
Washington travels to Montreal Thursday to play the first-place Canadiens, then heads to Canada’s capital for a showdown with the Senators Saturday. The Capitals complete their 3-in-4 nights trek Sunday with a final stop in Detroit to take on a Red Wings team currently in sixth but tied with Washington at 92 points.

Berra expected to start for Avalanche Wednesday

The Colorado Avalanche are expecting to start backup goaltender Reto Berra when they visit San Jose Wednesday. Berra, who has been rarely used this season, has a 3-3-1 record with a 2.97 goals against average and a .906 save percentage.

The Avs are currently +131 when they visit the Sharks Wednesday.

Maple Leafs a hot bet when tabbed as faves

The Toronto Maple Leafs aren't favored very often anymore, but they have won the last three times they have closed as a favorite.

The Leafs have been favorites three times since Feb. 7 and are shaping to be favored in Buffalo Wednesday night. At present, the Leafs are -125 and the Sabres +105.

Flyers at their best versus Penguins

The Philadelphia Flyers have won the previous six meetings with the Pittsburgh Penguins dating back to Nov. 13, 2013.

The Flyers have outscored the Penguins 22-12 over those six head-to-head meetings.

The two Pennsylvania hockey teams will renew acquaintances at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh Wednesday evening.

Flyers dominating battle of Pennsylvania

The Philadelphia Flyers have won the past six contest against in-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins. The Flyers have outscored the Pens 22-12, but have only won by one goal on four occasions.

The Flyers are currently +185 when they visit the Penguins Wednesday.

Preview: Maple Leafs (29-42) at Sabres (21-47)

Date: April 01, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

After the Buffalo Sabres were booed for scoring and cheered for losing on home ice, things aren't likely to change in that regard for the rest of the season.

With the race for the worst record in the NHL still undecided, the Sabres could get another bizarre reception Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs in a matchup of teams heading for the draft lottery.

Buffalo (21-47-8) owns the fewest points in the NHL - four fewer than Arizona - and the club's fans appear to want it that way in order to improve its chances of getting the first draft pick and perhaps selecting star prospect Connor McDavid.

Finishing with the worst record in the league would give a team a 20 percent chance of getting the top pick, 6.5 better than the next.

Those emotions were on display Thursday when fans booed Buffalo's comeback and cheered as it fell 4-3 in overtime to the Coyotes. They certainly weren't thrilled with the team splitting a two-game trip and ending a five-game slide with Monday's 4-1 win at Arizona.

"I really believe for the last number of weeks, we've been giving what we have to give," coach Ted Nolan said with another lost season winding down. "It's great to see when you give it, you get rewarded for it."

The fans have a different idea of what they consider a reward, and the Sabres are likely to hear it with four of their remaining six games coming at home.

Buffalo has given them little to cheer for anyway, losing 15 of 17 at First Niagara Center. However, the Sabres are 14-1-1 in their last 16 there against the Maple Leafs (29-42-6) after winning their fourth straight home meeting 6-2 on Nov. 15.

Tyler Ennis had three points in that matchup and equaled that total before missing his shootout attempt in a 4-3 loss at Toronto on March 11. The center has missed the last two games with an upper-body injury, but Nolan is hoping he'll be back against the Leafs.

Andrej Meszaros has two goals in each of the last two games, but the defenseman has just two assists in his past six meetings with Toronto.

The Maple Leafs have also been eliminated from postseason contention and will be a factor in the lottery, but haven't exactly helped their odds of landing the top pick after beating Tampa Bay 3-1 on Tuesday, three days after a 4-3 overtime victory versus Ottawa.

Toronto hasn't won three in a row since a season-best six-game run Dec. 6-16.

"It's just fun when you're winning, that's really the bottom line," center Nazem Kadri said. "Everything that we've been through, it's hard. I think realistically in the end, that makes you stronger as a person and as a player, just being able to handle all that adversity. It came all at once, so it's not like it was in separate pieces.

"You've got to give credit to the guys for showing some character and just being able to persevere."

James Reimer has been particularly impressive, stopping 62 of 66 shots over the last two games. He could start on back-to-back nights for the fourth time this season, but he's 2-3-2 with a 4.17 goals-against average in seven visits to Buffalo.

Jonathan Bernier has a 1.90 GAA while winning three straight meetings with the Sabres - though all of them came at home.

Kadri, looking to build on his two-point effort Tuesday, has five in his last four visits to Buffalo.

Preview: Flyers (30-29) at Penguins (42-23)

Date: April 01, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Injuries to Christian Ehrhoff and Kris Letang have left the Pittsburgh Penguins down a defenseman, forcing a five-man rotation to play heavy minutes as they fight for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Philadelphia Flyers would like nothing more than to make their rivals' situation more difficult.

Pittsburgh looks to avoid dropping a seventh straight meeting when it hosts Philadelphia on Wednesday night.

Ehrhoff has missed the last three games with an upper-body injury, and Letang was hospitalized after taking a hit from Arizona's Shane Doan in Saturday's 3-2 victory.

Letang was released Sunday with a concussion, but the Penguins (42-23-11) were left with Ben Lovejoy, Paul Martin, Rob Scuderi, Ian Cole and Derrick Pouliot on defense for that day's 3-2 shootout win over San Jose.

Pittsburgh doesn't have enough salary cap space to call up another defenseman, and it likely will be in the same situation against the Flyers (30-29-17) with Ehrhoff and Letang expected to sit out again.

The Penguins are tied with the New York Islanders for second in the Metropolitan Division.

"Every single guy, all five of us have to step up and take on more minutes, more responsibility, create more and help out as much as we can," Cole told the team's official website. "It's exciting. I get to play a lot more. I get to be in the flow of the game. That part is a positive as long as you don't get too tired."

The task becomes even more difficult to stop Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux. Voracek trails Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby by three for the NHL points lead and has two goals and five assists during a four-game point streak against the Penguins.

Giroux has two goals and eight assists in a five-game run in the series.

"No matter how the year goes for us or them, it's always a big rivalry and heated games, a lot of emotion and intensity in them," Martin said. "I'm sure I wouldn't expect anything different."

Philadelphia has been eliminated from postseason contention, but it has had plenty of recent success against the Penguins. The Flyers, who have won the last four matchups in Pittsburgh, got two assists apiece from Voracek and Giroux in a 5-3 win Oct. 22 before Giroux scored in overtime of a 3-2 victory Jan. 20.

"When you play against Pittsburgh you have to prepare to battle," coach Craig Berube said. "Our team gets fired up to play them for sure."

The Flyers haven't appeared to possess that mentality against other clubs lately. They're 1-2-3 over their last six after falling 3-2 to San Jose in a shootout Saturday. Voracek had two assists.

"I try to prepare for it just like any other game. I don't look at it as we're playing Pittsburgh," Voracek said. "Obviously it's a little more emotional, but that's about it."

Steve Mason made 42 saves against the Sharks and likely will be making his first start against the Penguins this season.

"They're games that have been fun to be a part of and intense," Mason said. "But every game is its own game. They're going to be hungry for the two points just as we will be."

Marc-Andre Fleury, who is 2-3-1 with a 3.09 goals-against average over his last six, is expected to be in net for Pittsburgh. He's winless with a 4.04 GAA in his last five starts against the Flyers.

Preview: Oilers (23-40) at Ducks (49-22)

Date: April 01, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

A third straight Pacific Division title for the Anaheim Ducks seems like a foregone conclusion. The franchise's first Presidents' Trophy is far less certain.

The Ducks can secure the division title Wednesday night as they try to complete a season sweep of the visiting Edmonton Oilers.

Anaheim (49-22-7) has an NHL-leading 105 points as it begins a three-game homestand. The Ducks have won seven of nine after capping a 3-2-0 trip with Sunday's 3-2 win over New Jersey.

The club can notch its second straight 50-win season after having none before last season. Anaheim, which needs one point from any of its remaining four games to clinch the division, is two points ahead of the New York Rangers and Nashville in the race for the Presidents' Trophy.

'It's not even a thought in our minds at all,' said right wing Corey Perry, who has a team-high 32 goals. 'We want to go into the playoffs on the right track, playing playoff hockey. It's not a focus. If it happens, fine, but we're not thinking of it.'

The Ducks (49-22-7) recovered from yielding 12 goals in back-to-back defeats to start the trip by allowing five over the last three games.

"It's all about the little details in the game," defenseman Francois Beauchemin said. "Getting pucks out - off the glass if you need to - and making short passes instead of long cross-ice passes. Those don't really get through anymore as you get closer to the playoffs. Teams are playing too well defensively."

The Ducks have taken three tight matchups with the Oilers this season, winning twice by one goal and once by two after an empty netter.

Edmonton (23-40-13) is brimming with confidence and can match its season-best four-game win streak from Oct. 20-27. The Oilers opened a three-game trip with Monday's 4-1 victory over Colorado behind three assists from Andrew Miller, who has six points in his last three contests.

'We're on a little bit of a streak here and I'm glad I can be a part of it and contribute in any way possible,' said defenseman Brandon Davidson, who scored his first career goal. 'It's exciting times here in the Oil country.'

Edmonton, which allows a West-high 3.26 goals per game, has surrendered four in the win streak.

"I think we're starting to understand that if we play the game the right way for 60 minutes, that we'll have success," interim coach Todd Nelson said. "Where we get in trouble is if we try to take the easy way out sometimes."

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle each have seven goals and nine assists in the last 11 games. The Oilers were among the highest-scoring teams in the NHL in March with 3.32 goals per game.

Richard Bachman has started in goal in the last two games. He posted his second career shutout in Friday's 4-0 win over Dallas with 29 saves and stopped the same amount of shots Monday.

The Ducks will likely start Frederik Andersen, who has posted a 1.67 goals-against average in winning three career starts against the Oilers.

Edmonton has dropped five straight in Anaheim since a 2-1 win exactly three years ago April 1.

At least publicly, San Jose and Colorado remain hopeful while the prospects of both reaching the postseason continue to fade.

As each club looks to bounce back from a costly defeat, the Sharks try for a 13th straight regular-season home victory over the Avalanche on Wednesday night.

San Jose (37-30-9) earned five points in the final three games of a 3-3-1 trip but sits 11th in the Western Conference and eight points back of Calgary for third place in the Pacific Division with six games remaining. The Sharks' run of 10 consecutive seasons with a playoff appearance is second to Detroit's 23.

"(The players) are going to keep playing. They're proud players," coach Todd McLellan told the NHL's official website. "We go until somebody tells us we can't go anymore and that's the attitude they've taken. Will it continue? I expect it to. We're not out of it yet. We're still not out of it.

"There's people probably watching and reading, going 'This guy's nuts.' But who knows? We'll see."

Also with six games left, Colorado (35-29-12) is one point behind San Jose.

'We are going to believe in ourselves until it's over,' Avs coach Patrick Roy said. 'I'm going to push and that's all I'm thinking. It's the way I am. I like to think the players will do the same.'

Colorado didn't help its cause by losing for the second time in one week to lowly Edmonton, 4-1 at home on Monday for its fourth defeat in six contests.

"From the get-go, it didn't feel like we were ready to compete, and to compete hard enough to win a hockey game,' captain Gabriel Landeskog said.

'It doesn't matter where a team is in the standings or who you're playing, if they're out-competing you and working harder than you, they're ultimately going to beat you. ... It's unacceptable."

Things likely won't get any easier for the Avs, who have won once in their last 15 overall games at San Jose. They are 0-8-4 there during the regular season since a 3-1 victory Feb. 6, 2008.

The Sharks, however, are 3-8-2 at home since the start of February and have averaged 2.0 goals over the last nine there. They've also been held to two or fewer non-shootout goals in nine of the last 11 overall and went 2 for 10 on the power play in the last two.

"We've got to find a way to score,' said Sharks forward Logan Couture, who scored for the second time in three games during Sunday's 3-2 shootout loss at Pittsburgh. 'We have to."

Couture had the tying goal in the third period of a 3-2 shootout win at Colorado on Oct. 28.

Teammate Antti Niemi, who made 31 saves in that contest, has a 1.93 goals-against average during his six-game home winning streak against the Avs. However, it's uncertain if he'll be ready after sitting out Sunday's game due to an illness.

Niemi has allowed four goals in each of his last two starts and gave up five in a 6-2 defeat to Chicago in San Jose's most recent home game March 14.

Colorado's Semyon Varlamov, who stopped 49 shots against the Sharks in October, is 0-3-2 with a 3.96 GAA at San Jose.

Teammate Ryan O'Reilly has five goals with eight assists during a career-high eight-game point streak. He has two and six assists in his last nine versus San Jose.

Out since Jan. 21 with a knee injury, Colorado defenseman Erik Johnson is expected to practice Tuesday and could play before the season ends.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Best six, worst six major league teams in one-run games last season.

San Diego, 33-21 Cincinnati, 22-38

Baltimore, 32-23 Houston, 17-28

St Louis, 32-23 Seattle, 18-27

LA Dodgers, 25-20 Toronto, 15-20

LA Angels, 27-22 Oakland, 21-28

Milwaukee, 23-19 Arizona, 23-30

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Gregg Marshall stays at Wichita State, which came up with a $3.3M salary to keep their coach out of Alabama. Basketball is serious business.

12) Where does the Crimson Tide turn now? Steve Prohm? Richard Pitino? If you take a new job, no matter what the money is like, you better be sure you can win there or else you're fired three years later. Or sooner.

11) Speaking of which, the Cubs fired Rich Renteria last fall after one season as manager, when Joe Maddon became available. Would love to see a TV network scoop Renteria up so we can get his insights on what managing the Cubs is like and what getting the boot after only one season is like.

10) Curious to me how Dave Martinez is the only coach who went from Tampa to Chicago with Joe Maddon; most of the rest are still with the Rays.

9) NFL Draft is four weeks from tonight and the top two QBs aren't going to be there. The more I think about Jameis Winston, the more I think I'd pass on taking him. Too many questions; I'm thinking Jimbo Fisher insulated him a lot from public scrutiny, and his NFL coach ain't going to be doing that. Life in the fishbowl can be unpleasant if you struggle on the field.

8) Supposedly, 12 Florida State kids might get drafted this year, which means Coach Fisher has a rebuilding job ahead of him, including starting a new QB. Winston lost one game in two seasons as a starter; he'll be hard to replace.

7) I'm not a morning person, but one of the best things about mornings are sausage biscuits with egg at McDonald's. Sadly, they stop serving them at 10:30, which is way too early for this late riser, but there is hope- McDonald's is going to start testing serving 24-hour breakfast in San Diego this spring.

If this goes well and they start serving breakfast 24 hours a day, the way Jack in the Box does out west, it will be tremendous. Sausage biscuits are terrific!!!!

6) People bet on exhibition baseball games; Pirates played the Orioles on the road last night-- Baltimore used a DH, while Pittsburgh didn't, since their pitchers have to bat next week. Game ended in a 3-3 tie, but if you bet the Orioles, you had an edge.

5) There have been 300+ college basketball transfers; there are 351 D-I teams, so you do the math on how many kids make the wrong decision, or become unhappy with their playing time. Georgia Sate's Ron Hunter says he recruits some kids he knows he can't get, on hope that if they decide to transfer, they'll consider Georgia State then..

4) Speaking of Hunter, how do some of these teams hire new coaches without giving him an interview? He's won at IUPUI and Georgia State, not exactly Kentucky/UCLA.

3) Over/under total for Mets and Bronx Bombers are both 81.5; when was last time the Bronx total wasn't higher than the Mets' expectations?

2) Chris Mullin is likeable; he was a great player, enjoyed his work on TV, hope he wins at St John's, but wasn't it a little weird how prominent Lou Carnesecca was at Mullin's press conference? Carnesecca is 90, has been out of coaching 23 years-- all that went thru my mind watching the press conference was that Carnesecca is still pulling strings behind the scenes, which if true, is an odd way to run a business.

1) Quote of the Day, part II: "20th pick in this (NFL) Draft is the same as the 50th pick, to me." unnamed NFL scout to themmqb.com. All of which means the 2nd round could be almost as much fun as the first round.

Holtby has been dominant against the Canadiens

Braden Holtby has stared down the Montreal Canadiens from the net seven times in his career with the Habs yet to decipher the goalie. Holtby has a 5-0-2 career record against the Canadiens, with both OTL's coming this season, while posting a ridiculous 0.97 GAA and .964 save percentage.

The Washington Capitals are currently +115 when they visit the Bell Centre Thursday.

Hurricanes-Panthers have history of going under

In the past seven meetings between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers has seen the under cash out six times. There has been a combined average of 3.9 goals per game during that span, with a shutout being recorded in the past three.

Currently, the total is set at five when the 'Canes visit the Panthers Thursday.

-- Game in Montreal took 2:10, which is too fast. 2-0 baseball games are generally not that much fun, epsecially when around 30% of that time is TV commercials.

-- Three countries in the world still don't use the metric system; United States, along with Burma and Liberia.

-- Dallas Mavericks are 9-16 against Western Conference playoff teams.

-- Twins' pitcher Ervin Santana gets 80 games for PEDs, the same steroid that got Ben Johnson DQ'd from the '88 Olympics.

-- Bowling Green's basketball coach was making $335,000 before he got fired this week; assistant coach who just left Missouri for another job was making $325,000.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

13) If they do wind up putting another baseball team in Montreal, it'll be either the Rays or A's, two teams that can't get anyone in their current city to build them a stadium. Would be very sad if the A's ceased to exist so there could be a rebirth of the Montreal Expos, in a city that only likes hockey.

12) Woman in the express lane (14 items or less) in front of me at the grocery store Friday spent $111.23 on roughly 21 items; the complete lack of manners some people have today defies belief. I sound like someone's father, but.......

11) Brooklyn Nets are 13-9 since trading Kevin Garnett; Minnesota is 4-17 since they made the trade.

10) Shaka Smart had a $500,000 buyout at VCU; to satisfy part of that, Texas has to play the Rams home/home, or send them a check for $250,000.

9) Angels sounded disappointed that Josh Hamilton didn't get suspended for his drug relapse, as in "You mean we still have to pay him?"

8) NBA record for having played for the most teams is 12, held by four guys: Joe Smith, Jim Jackson, Tony Massenburg and Chucky Brown. Three of those four guys played college ball in the ACC, the fourth in the Big 10-- its hard to become an established star in the NBA.

7) Fireworks nights are big draws at baseball parks across the country, so the A's are having six of them this season.

6) Stanford Cardinal won two of last four NITs, which isn't all that good; most coaches would rather make the NCAA tournament and lose than win the NIT.

5) adidas put up a billboard near Wrigley Field Friday that says "Worth the Wait", referring to third base prospect Kris Bryant.

4) Every time I watch the Milwaukee Bucks play, they play great; they're under .500 but will make the playoffs-- maybe I should watch more often

3) Knicks were down 30-8 at Washington Friday before the pizza got cold; its incredible how depressing a team they have.

2) NBA's problem is the Lakers make the Knicks look promising; plus they're in the West, so they're getting pummeled by better teams and its going to take them a lot longer to become relevant again.

1) Exhibition baseball games have been great to watch this month, but after a month of them, they get a little mind-numbing, simply because the results do not count. Will be great to watch some games that matter, with no players wearing #98 or #85.

Blue Jackets extend streak to eight straight games

Don't tell the Columbus Blue Jackets they have nothing to play for, as they topped the New York Islanders 4-3 in overtime Thursday night for their eighth straight win.

The Blue Jackets are officially eliminated from the playoffs, despite winning 11 of their last 12 games. The good news for bettors is they are more than happy to play spoiler with eight of those 11 wins coming as underdogs.

Expect Columbus to be dogs when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday.

Sens will lean on red-hot Hammond once again vs. Caps

The Ottawa Senators can thank rookie sensation goaltender Andrew Hammond for their late season playoff push, and he'll be between the pipes once again Saturday for a big home game against the Washington Capitals.

"The Hamburglar" is a sizzling 16-1-1 in his first 18 career starts for the surprising Senators. The British Columbia native owns a .940 save percentage and a miniscule 1.80 GAA this year.

Ottawa is currently -115 on the moneyline at most shops.
