Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..
— Here’s a tip; don’t bet on exhibition games, in any sport. The teams don’t care who wins, they’re just taking a look at players to fill their roster with.
I tell this story once a year:
Long time ago, maybe 2010 or 2011, I’m at the NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League. Great event to go to if you like the NBA, the two arenas are air conditioned, lot of games all day, lot of famous NBA people are around, and when the games are over, you’re still in Las Vegas.
You can bet on games in the NBA Summer League. Think the limit was $500, but still……
I’m sitting there with my friend Dennis, who is a professional gambler. Two guys sit in front of us in the smaller gym at UNLV, which seats around 3,000 people. One of the guys was huge, had to be some kind of body builder. He is bragging to his friend how he made “a great bet” on this game, since the casino he was staying at “posted a bad line” on this game.
Oy.
Team A had won its game the day before by 20-25 points, Team B lost its game the day before, but the line was basically a pick ‘em, so Mr Body Builder thought he had a sure thing.
One small problem; Team A, the team that won the day before, played different guys in this game then they did the day before. It is Summer League; they’re there to see the young guys play, so most everyone gets a chance to play.
The game starts, and Team B gets off a fast start and Mr Body Builder goes on tilt before the first quarter is over. I was going to tap him on the shoulder and explain the deal, but then I realized the phrase “they kill the messenger” was in play here, so Dennis and I moved over to a seat in a different section.
Moral of the Story: Las Vegas casinos don’t post bad lines on games.
— Trayce Thompson is trying to make the Red Sox as a backup OF; he’s played in 369 big league games over seven seasons for five different teams. He hit 23 homers in AAA ball last year.
However, Trayce Thompson is, at best, the 3rd-best athlete in his family; Klay Thompson is his brother- he’s scored over 16,000 points and won four NBA titles in his great basketball career.
His father is Mychal Thompson, who scored 12,810 points in his 12-year career, playing for three different teams. He was the first player taken in the 1978 NBA Draft.
Another brother, Mychel Thompson, played five games for the Cavaliers in 2012.
— Dodgers’ OF Michael Conforto also has good genes; his father played football at Penn State, his mother won an Olympic gold medal and a silver medal in synchronized swimming in 1984 and 1988.
— Imagine being a really good college pitcher when the amateur draft happens, and you get drafted by the Colorado Rockies. You must go puke right? What pitcher wants to play for a cheap team that plays in very high altitude, so your stats will never be very good?
— New York Mets have 12 players this season who are earning $10M+ in 2025.
Miami Marlins have one; Sandy Alcantara; they’re also paying Avasail Garcia $12M, but Garcia is a free agent right now, isn’t on anyone’s roster.
— Lakers are 6-2 when Luka Doncic is in their lineup.
Big night for the Lakers Tuesday; Lebron James has 49,999 points- he’ll go over 50,000 when the Lakers host the New Orleans Pelicans.
— Former Cowboys/Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson retired from the NFL pre-game show he was on for the last 31 years; Johnson won a college national title with the Miami Hurricanes, won two Super Bowls in Dallas. He is 81 years old now.
