Sunday’s 6-pack

NBA leaders in rebounding:
14.7— Rudy Gobert, Utah
13.8— Nikola Jokic, Den
12.1— Domantas Sabonis, Ind
11.8— Clint Capela, Atl
11.6— Giannis Antetokounmpo, Mil/Joel Embiid, Phil
11.5— Jonas Valanciunas, NO

Quote of the Day
“It’s something that you dream about. Not everybody gets the chance to experience that. So I’m going to cherish every second of the thing because you’re never guaranteed for this to happen again.”
Braves manager Brian Snitker, on getting his World Series ring

Sunday’s quiz
Who was the only player in big leagues to play all 162 games last year?
Hint: He batted leadoff in every game, too.

Saturday’s quiz
Fernando Tatis Sr hit two grand slams in the same inning of a game at Dodger Stadium.

Friday’s quiz
Singer Gene Autry was the original owner of the Los Angeles Angels.

*******************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

13) Baseball season has obviously started but the great majority of pitchers are still in spring training mode, as far as how many pitches they throw. There have been 35 games played so far; only three starting pitchers have thrown 90+ pitches.

Some teams haven’t used their relievers on consecutive days yet; the season is six months long, so they’re being careful and bringing their pitchers along at same pace they normally do, its just that spring training was shorter this year.

12) IF/utility guy Brad Miller is batting leadoff for Texas this week; this guy has had quite a journey the last few years:
2013-15— Seattle
2016-18— Tampa Bay
2018— Milwaukee
2019— Cleveland
2019— Philadelphia
2020— St Louis
2021— Philadelphia (again)
2022— Texas

Texas is his sixth team the last five years, not counting his two stints in Philly. Versatile players who get on base have value, so teams are willing to give Miller a shot.

11) Couple of NL Central pitchers really struggled in the first inning Saturday:
— Miles Mikolas needed 41 pitches to get thru his first inning, allowing only one run, but he was also out of the game in the 4th inning.
— Brandon Woodruff threw 40 pitches in his first inning, giving up three runs; he didn’t finish the 4th inning either.

Unusual for a pitcher to throw 40+ pitches in any inning, especially these days.

10) New York 4, Boston 2— Red Sox start the season going 2-22 with runners in scoring position.

9) Kansas City 1, Cleveland 0 (10)— Royals scored total of four runs in their first two games, but won both of them.

8) Miami 2, San Francisco 1— Carlos Rodon struck out 12 in his Giants’ debut, but didn’t get much run support. Marlins’ bullpen tossed four shutout innings.

7) White Sox P Lucas Giolito (abdomen) is expected to miss at least two starts.

6) Seattle 4, Minnesota 3— Adam Frazier, Todd France had clutch hits in ninth inning as the Mariners get another one-run win. Since beginning of last season, Seattle is 33-19 in games decided by one run.

5) Guy named Rob Walton is expected to bid $4B to buy the Denver Broncos; he is the heir to Walmart fortune, and his cousin is married to Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke. Pretty wealthy family. Rob Walton has a net worth of $70B, that’s billion, with a B.

4) NFL teams are worth an average of $3-4B each; you really believe that people rich enough to own a team like that are going to be told who to hire as their coach?

Totally unsurprising that when the Tennessee Titans wanted to hire Mike Mularkey as head coach, they first had to hold sham interviews with minority candidates, to satisfy the Rooney Rule, which says minority candidates must be interviewed.

But they were sloppy, holding the sham interviews after they told people who they were going to hire. Seriously? In this day and age? Don’t they watch Law and Order reruns? The truth most always finds its way out into the public eye.

3) Angels 2, Astros 0— Noah Syndergaard threw 5.1 scoreless innings in his Angel debut. Houston was held to two singles, after hitting eight home runs in their first two games.

2) This doesn’t sound possible, but on the Atlanta Braves’ World Series rings, there are a total 755 diamonds on each one. How long before one of them shows up on Pawn Stars?

1) 8-team USFL kicks off play next weekend; they’re not going to have first down chains, they have a system like tennis uses, which measures whether a team made a first down or not. The footballs will have a chip in them, and it is a virtual replay system, which should be interesting to track.

Monday’s 6-pack

Leaders in on-base %age through only four days (minimum 10 AB’s):
1.857— Steven Kwan, Clev
1.788— Nolan Arenado, StL
1.576— Matt Olson, Atl
1.538— Jurickson Profar, SD
1.469— Mark Canha, NYM
1.455— Andrew Vaughn, CWS

Quote of the Day
“I love the man. He gave me a chance. This was the only team that called me in the offseason and gave me a chance. I have nothing bad to say about him. All praise goes to him. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have a chance to play basketball.”
Lakers G Malik Monk, talking about coach Frank Vogel

Monday’s quiz
The NHL expanded from six teams to 12 in 1967; which of the new six teams was the first one to win the Stanley Cup?

Sunday’s quiz
Whit Merrifield was the only player in big leagues to play all 162 games last year; he batted leadoff in every game, too.

Saturday’s quiz
Fernando Tatis Sr hit two grand slams in the same inning of a game at Dodger Stadium.

********************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

13) Four days into the season, Tampa Bay Rays are the only unbeaten team in baseball.

12) There have been 14 games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on; the home team is 10-4 in those games.

11) Guardians 17, Royals 3— Cleveland scored once in their first two games; they scored 10 runs in the first two innings of this game. Rookie OF Steven Kwan was 5-5 in this game, is 8-10 so far this season.

10) Rangers 12, Blue Jays 6— Texas is paying Seager/Semien $57M a year to play SS/2B, but they need pitching (everyone does). Rangers lost two of three in Toronto, despite scoring 23 runs in the three games.

As for Toronto, their starting pitchers lasted a total of 8.2 IP in three games. Not ideal.

9) Brewers 5, Cubs 4— Nic Lentz umpired the plate in this game; he didn’t call many strikes on close pitches. Freddy Peralta threw 88 pitches, lasted four innings. Marcus Stroman threw 79 pitches in five innings. No one pays to watch the umpire squeeze pitchers.

8) Only three starting pitchers threw 80+ pitches Sunday; only one of them finished the fifth inning. So far this season, only three pitchers have thrown 90+ pitches.

7) Scottie Scheffler won The Masters, which I mention only because he went to high school in Dallas at Highland Park HS, which is also where Dodgers P Clayton Kershaw, Rams QB Matthew Stafford went to school. Have I mentioned lately that Stafford won a Super Bowl with the Rams couple months ago? OK, I probably have.

6) NBA public relations people had to be queasy Sunday night; Memphis Grizzlies are on national TV, their star player Ja Morant is sitting out, dressed in street clothes on the bench, wearing a St Louis Cardinals BASEBALL cap. No bueno.

Memphis is only four hours from St Louis; their AAA team is in Memphis, but still. Second half, Morant’s Cardinal cap was turned backwards; the TNT cameras gave more close-ups when he was on camera, so you couldn’t see the hat that much.

When one of the best young players in the game is sitting there promoting a competing business, someone from the commissioner’s office had to be hitting the phones, and quickly.

5) Watching TV very late at night Saturday, Big 14 Network and ACC Network are showing spring football games (Purdue/Boston College). Interesting stuff; college football is out of the public eye until the magazines come out in July, but coaches/players are doing the work now.

4) Purdue won nine games last year, most it has won since 2003. Hard to tell a lot from spring games; it is like Pro Bowl rules, no real tackling, can’t hit the QB’s, but the tone from the guys on TV was positive, like this is a program on the rise. Purdue opens on a Thursday night with Penn State; we’ll find out a lot more then.

3) The TV analyst was a Purdue alum; he said something I didn’t realize, or maybe I did realize but had forgotten. He said the most important wins of his career were when they beat Indiana, not the bowl games or beating the better teams like Michigan/Ohio State. Rivalry games really mean the most to guys that played the game.

2) ESPN has a mock draft every other day or so; the draft isn’t for 17 more days. Going to be a lot of guessing on TV between now and then; I’m a Rams fan, so the first round doesn’t mean too much to me. Rams haven’t had a first round pick since 2016; their next one is 2024, but it’ll be interesting to follow and study, but when it happens, not people guessing about it.

1) Watching Winning Time on HBO, the story about the Magic Johnson-era Lakers, it appears that Nike’s Phil Knight offered Magic Johnson stock options in Nike, when Johnson was a rookie and Nike was basically a start-up company.

If the information on the show is accurate, Johnson signed with Converse and turned down Nike; those stock options he would’ve been given turned out to be worth $5.2B, that’s billion, with a B.

Whoops.

I have to deal with doctors this morning. It shouldn't take long but we are talking about VA employees. That's why I know I won't be able to post Dunkel before first pitch goes.

I'll get it up as soon as I can. This is one of those times it would be so nice if you could gather and post this stuff with a phone.

Tuesday’s 6-pack

Odds to win the USFL championship; season starts Saturday
+450— Michigan Panthers (Jeff Fisher)
+450— Tampa Bay Bandits (Todd Haley)
+450— New Orleans Breakers (Larry Fedora)
+550— Philadelphia Stars (Bart Andrus)
+550— Pittsburgh Maulers (Kirby Wilson)
+700— Birmingham Stallions (Skip Holtz)
+700— Houston Gamblers (Kevin Sumlin)
+900— New Jersey Generals (Mike Riley)

Quote of the Day
“Emotions got the best of me. I said it. And do I mean it? No. It’s a frustrating night for me. Obviously I made a few mistakes in the field. But these fans just want to win. You heard it, when we came back. They’re great. I’m sorry to them. I don’t mean that.”
Phillies 3B Alec Bohm, who took grief from the home fans after making two errors Monday

Tuesday’s quiz
Phil Jackson won 11 NBA titles as a head coach; what team did he begin his NBA coaching career with as an assistant, before he went to Chicago?

Monday’s quiz
The NHL expanded from six teams to 12 in 1967; Philadelphia Flyers were first of those new teams to win the Stanley Cup- they won the Cup in 1974.

Sunday’s quiz
Whit Merrifield was the only player in big leagues to play all 162 games last year; he batted leadoff in every game, too.

****************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) NBA play-in stuff starts tonight; here is how it works:
— #10 Charlotte @ #9 Atlanta; #10 San Antonio @ #9 New Orleans— Loser is done for the season, winner plays loser of the #7-8 game.
— #8 Cleveland @ #7 Brooklyn; #8 Clippers @ #7 Minnesota— Winner of these games are in the playoffs; losers plays the winner of the #9-10 game.

12) Lakers won the NBA title two years ago, with Frank Vogel as coach; they fired him Monday, and didn’t handle it well, letting word leak out during their last game Sunday night.

Vogel went 145-107 in three years with LA; he deserved better than being ambushed at his press conference after Sunday’s game, especially after the Lakers won that (meaningless) game in OT.

11) By the way, Lakers’ rookie Austin Reaves had a triple double in that game, becoming the first undrafted rookie ever to have a triple-double, while scoring 30+ points.

10) SMU G Kendrick Davis, AAC Player of the Year, entered the transfer portal; he scored 19.4 ppg this season, shooting 37.2% on the arc. He is a graduate transfer who right now is listed as the best player in the portal.

9) Does the transfer portal allow some high school recruits to slip thru the cracks? Teams are spending more and more energy poaching players from other college teams, so they’re spending less time on recruiting high school kids.

8) Random golf note: Since 2015, Rory McIlroy is +35 in the first round of major tournaments, then 68-under the rest of those tournaments.

7) Barry Bonds retired after the 2007 season; since then, the Giants have started a different guy in left field in their season opener every year since then. 14 different guys.

6) Cal Ripken’s record for consecutive games played will never, ever be broken; right now, the active player who has played the most consecutive games is Whit Merrifield (472) with Marcus Semien next at 166. Ripken played in 2,632 consecutive games.

5) There is a baseball pitching stat called (WHIP); it measures how many runners a pitcher puts on base. WHIP is walks + hits divided by innings pitched, but shouldn’t hit batters count too? How can you accurately measure baserunners allowed if you ignore hit batters?

4) Phillies 5, Mets 4:
— Mets led this game 4-0 in 8th inning.
— Didi Gregorius had game-winning double for the Phillies.
— Mets’ P Walker left after two innings (shoulder)

3) Nationals 11, Braves 2:
— Maikel Franco was 4-5, with five RBI.
— Atlanta has sold out four of its five games this season.

2) Guardians 10, Royals 7:
— Cleveland rookie OF Kwan is 9-13 with three walks to start his big league career.
— Game was 4-4 after six innings, but the Royals’ bullpen imploded.

1) Forbes Magazine lists the Denver Broncos as the 10th-most valuable franchise in the NFL; lot of people think that when the Broncos are sold, it’ll be for more than the $4B Walmart heir Rob Walton bid for the team. Walton’s cousin is married to Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke, who owns the NBA/NHL teams in Denver.
