Thursday’s 6-pack
Major league leaders in hits:

91— Nick Castellanos, Cin/Adam Frazier, Pitt
90— Trea Turner, Wash
88— Vladimir Guerrero, Tor
87— Cedric Mullins, Balt
86— Jesse Winker, Cin
84— Bogaerts, Kiner-Falefa, Tapia

Quote of the Day
“I’m still stunned sitting here that we didn’t win Game 7 at home……….look, ultimately you win or lose mostly with your players. It’s my job to get the best players, and frankly, we didn’t have quite good enough players.”
Daryl Morey, GM of the 76ers

Thursday’s quiz
Who managed the Mets, last time they won the World Series?

Wednesday’s quiz
James Woods played the team doctor in Any Given Sunday.

Tuesday’s quiz
Chicago Bears beat New England when they won their only Super Bowl title after the 1985 season.

*********************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Padres 5, Dodgers 3:
— Dodgers get swept in San Diego for first time since 2010.
— Padre closer Melancon got his 4th save in five days.
— Dodgers are 7-9 in Trevor Bauer’s starts.

12) Nationals 13, Phillies 12:
— Phillies led 5-0 after four innings.
— Starlin Castro’s two-run single was the game-winner.
— Kyle Schwarber has 10 home runs in his last dozen games.

11) Giants 9, Angels 3 (13)
— If you had under 8 in this game, the gambling gods owe you one.
— Teams were a combined 4-34 with RISP.
— Mike Tauchman whiffed five times, then homered in the 13th inning.

This game took so long that Giants’ radio guy Dave Flemming had to log off the air, in order to do the ESPN broadcast of the Dodger-Padre game. Giants’ radio finished up using the TV feed with Jon Miller doing play-by-play.

Angels didn’t use a DH, because Ohtani pitched; P Griffin Canning played a couple innings out in left field, which isn’t normal. P Dylan Bundy pinch-hit for the Angels.

10) Was watching a replay of Monday’s NC State-Vanderbilt game in the College World Series; Vandy P Jack Leiter threw 123 pitches, struck out 15 guys. He is going to get drafted in a couple weeks; how much wear and tear do college coaches put on their pitchers’ arms?

Earlier this season, Leiter threw 126 pitches in his no-hitter; no one in the major leagues has thrown that many pitches in a game this year. Chances are that Leiter will never throw 126 pitches in a game the rest of his career.

9) Former big league SS Troy Tulowitzki is a volunteer assistant coach at Texas; the Longhorns’ SS is using the glove Tulowitzki used back when he won the Gold Glove in 2010-11.

8) Wednesday was the 104th anniversary of the ballgame when pitcher Babe Ruth walked the leadoff hitter in a game, got thrown out by the umpire, then his replacement retired 27 hitters in a row, one of the strangest games in big league history.

I’m guessing Babe Ruth would’ve been the center of attention in our current social media era.

7) Hawks 116, Bucks 113:
— Trae Young scored 48 points, dished out 11 assists.
— Hawks won despite their subs playing a combined 60:00- they were minus-38.
— John Collins had 23 points, 15 rebounds for Atlanta.

6) Last time the Hawks got this far along in the playoffs was six years ago, when their coach was Mike Budenholzer, who obviously is now Milwaukee’s coach.

5) Last time the Detroit Pistons picked first in the NBA Draft was 1970; they took Bob Lanier, who scored 22.7 ppg over ten years with Detroit.

4) Thinking back on the Suns’ last-second alley-oop the other night:
— Devin Booker set a set screen, despite playing with a broken nose.
— Jae Crowder threw a great pass, a truly great pass; should’ve been mentioned more.

3) Forgot to mention this when the NFL schedule came out, but they did something really smart; three exhibition games per team, but no games on Labor Day weekend, the week before the regular season starts. Very good idea, long overdue.

Not sure what this does to HBO’s Hard Knocks; the best episode is usually when the team makes its last cuts— will that be after Labor Day, or the week before?

2) I’m seriously hoping MLB bans shifts next year; Manny Machado is San Diego’s 3B, but last night, he was so far out in right field, when he dove for a fly ball, he wound up on the warning track. Keeping four infielders on the infield would create more offense, and baseball claims they want more offense in their game. We’ll see.

1) If the playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Mets-Brewers-Giants. Wild Card: San Diego @ Los Angeles
AL: Red Sox-White Sox-Astros. Wild Card: Tampa Bay @ A’s

Friday’s Den: College football coaching changes for this year

College football coaching changes for 2021:
Arizona
— First-time head coach Jedd Fisch is a longtime offensive coordinator.
— Arizona hired alums Ricky Hunley, Chuck Cecil as assistant coaches/defense.
— Wildcats went 0-5 LY, losing 70-7 to rival Arizona State; they gave up 39.8 ppg. .

Arkansas State
— Butch Jones went 50-27 at Central Michigan/Cincinnati, but went 14-24 in SEC games while at Tennessee. After three years working for Nick Saban, Jones is a head coach again.
— Previous coach bolted to Utah State, after Red Wolves had first losing season since 2010.
— ASU threw ball for 384.4 yards/game LY, #2 in country.

Auburn
— Previous coach Malzahn went 68-35 at Auburn, 39-27 in SEC, got told to take a hike.
— When you go 39-27 in SEC games and still get fired, expectations are high.
— Bryan Harsin comes from Boise State, where he was 69-19, 45-8 in Mountain West.
— Auburn opponents converted 50.3% of their 3rd down plays LY. Not good.

Boise State
— First-time head coach Andy Avalos was defensive coordinator at Oregon.
— Avalos is a Boise alum, like every Boise HC since 1998.
— Last four years, Boise is 27-2 in Mountain West
— Last three years, Broncos are only 7-6 outside Mountain West.

Buffalo
— Previous HC went 20-10 last three years, won two bowls, bolted to Kansas.
— First-time HC is 35 years old, was Dallas Cowboys’ cornerbacks’ coach LY
— Buffalo went 6-1 LY, scored 43.4 ppg, lost MAC title game, but won bowl.

Central Florida
— Previous coach bolted to Tennessee; UCF hired former Auburn coach Malzahn.
— Malzahn was 39-27 in SEC games at Auburn, but coaching Auburn during the Saban era at Alabama hasn’t been good for job security.
— Knights scored 42.2 ppg LY but went 6-4; the defense needs work.
— QB Gabriel has thrown for 7,223 yards in two seasons.

Illinois
— Illini hasn’t had a winning season since 2011.
— Bielema was 68-24 at Wisconsin, but was 11-29 in SEC games at Arkansas.
— QB Peters is 6th-year college player; he started here last two years. He figures to hand off a lot this season; Bielema prefers to run the ball a lot.

Kansas
— Leipold won six D-3 national titles, went 24-10 his last three years at Buffalo.
— Leipold was hired the day before Kansas’ spring game, which was awkward.
— Jayhawks haven’t been to a bowl game since 2008.
— Kansas will try to run ball well, to keep their defense off the field.

UL-Monroe
— 64-year old HC Terry Bowden spent last two years as a Clemson assistant.
— Former Arizona/Michigan HC Rich Rodriguez is the new OC- his son is the QB.
— Nine of their 10 losses LY were by double digits; this is a total rebuild.

Marshall
— Previous coach was 85-54 but got fired; the governor of West Virginia didn’t like him.
— When you go 55-30 in conference games and still get fired, expectations are high.
— New coach Huff has been NFL/college assistant for 16 years, last two at Alabama.
— Huff kept the same offensive coordinator, has 9 starters back on offense.

South Alabama
— New HC Wommack was an assistant at Indiana during their turnaround.
— QB Jake Bentley has 8,409 passing yards, playing for South Carolina/Utah.
— Major Applewhite is the new OC; they’ll throw more vertical passes.
— Jaguars haven’t been to a bowl since 2016.

South Carolina
— New HC Beamer is son of former Va Tech coach Frank Beamer.
— Gamecocks went 2-8 LY, giving up 41+ points in five of last six games.
— South Carolina has only 9 starters back; 5 on offense, 4 on defense.
— No returning WR had more than 11 catches last season.

Southern Mississippi
— Golden Eagles had three different head coaches, just last year.
— New HC Hall was OC at Tulane; he’ll be his own OC here.
— RB Frank Gore Jr ran for 708 yards LY; his dad is still active in the NFL.
— Southern Miss has 10 starters back on offense.

Tennessee
— New coach Heupel comes from UCF, with new AD White.
— NCAA is investigating, which usually screws up recruiting for a while.
— Tennessee hasn’t been to a bowl since 2016- last year was their worst record in 97 years.
— Heupel is an offensive guru, but this turnaround will take a while.

Texas
— Tom Herman went 32-18 in four years, 22-13 in Big X games, got the ax anyway.
— Rival Oklahoma has won six consecutive Big X titles; Texas boosters don’t like Oklahoma.
— Longhorns were 7-3 LY, will be breaking in a new QB this year.
— New coach Sarkisian was fired at USC for showing up drunk, but he knows Nick Saban, so he gets another head coaching job.

Utah State
— New HC Anderson led Arkansas State to 6 bowls in 7 years.
— Utah State has regressed since scoring 47.5 ppg in 2018.
— Aggies went 1-5 LY, scoring 10.4 ppg in the losses.
— Utah State has 9 starters back on offense, 7 on defense.

Vanderbilt
— New coach Clark Lee is a Vanderbilt alum.
— Commodores get three guys on OL back who opted out of last year.
— Vandy allowed 38+ points in seven of nine games LY.
— QB Seals completed 64.6% of his passes LY, so they’re good there.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Pro wrestler/actor John Cena has granted more than 650 wishes to sick children thru the Make-a-Wish foundation, by far the most by any celebrity.

We need to hear more stories like this one, about people who do good things and don’t necessarily get paid for it.

12) Suns 84, Clippers 80:
— Phoenix leads series 3-1.
— Phoenix won despite scoring 34 points in second half.
— Suns’ 84 points are least amount scored by any winning team in any NBA game this season.

11) Former big league pitcher Rick Sutcliffe told a funny story on the Cub-Dodger game this week.

When he was a young pitcher for the Dodgers, Sutcliffe was having a Dodger Dog in the bullpen as a home game started, but LA’s starting pitcher got hurt in the first inning. The bullpen phone rang; Sutcliffe was summoned in to be the reliever.

Sutcliffe gets to the mound, and is surprised when Tommy Lasorda starts chewing him out. Turns out Sutcliffe spilled some mustard on his jersey while he was having his Dodger Dog. Not good.

10) Going into Saturday’s game, Red Sox hitters batting in the leadoff slot had a .275 on-base %age, which would be the 4th-worst on-base %age in the American League since 1969. Red Sox are 46-31 right now; here are the other three teams whose leadoff hitters struggled:

1978 A’s 69-93
1981 Blue Jays 37-69
1994 Mariners 49-63

9) Thursday was first day in over 100 years where two starting pitchers were taken out of games on the same day, when both had no-hitters in the 7th inning or later.

Red Sox took Nick Pivetta out after 6.2 no-hit innings; Red Sox wound up losing 1-0 to the Rays in St Pete. Zach Davies threw six no-hit innings for the Cubs, who used three other relievers to close out the Dodgers 4-0.

8) This week in Minnesota, Twins’ Miguel Sano did all this in one game:
— He pinch ran
— He had 2+ hits
— He had 2+ RBI
— He hit a walk-off homer

He is the only American League player EVER to do all those things in the same game.

7) Mets-Phillies split a twinbill Friday; Philly became the first team this season to blow a save in both ends of a doubleheader. Phillies have blown six saves in their last four games.

6) Marv Albert is retiring this summer; he has been one of the best play-by-play guys in NBA history, and he’s been great for a long time. Was pretty cool this week when he was presented with an actual Larry O’Brien trophy by the league, in recognition of his great career.

5) Was surprised to read that Oklahoma’s football opener this fall is at Tulane; big-time teams like the Sooners aren’t usually eager to play road games.

Tulane isn’t terrible; they’re 20-18 the last three years, playing in bowls all three years. Green Wave covered its last six games as a home underdog, by the way.

4) NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights will have an AHL farm team playing in suburban Henderson this fall, in a new 6,000-seat arena that is almost finished. Big West conference basketball tournament is going to be played there next spring- they played at Mandalay Bay last year.

3) Montreal Canadiens are in the Stanley Cup final for the first time since 1993; five of their last six home game have gone to overtime.

2) Atlanta Hawks have won three Game 1 playoff series on the road this year, only the 4th team ever to do that. The other three:

1981 Rockets
1989 Bulls
1999 Knicks

1) If the playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Mets, Brewers, Giants. Wild Card: Padres @ Dodgers
AL: Rays, White Sox, Astros. Wild Card: A’s @ Red Sox
