GAME RECAP
STAMPS STRIKE EARLY TO TOP ARGOS
CFL.CA STAFF

TORONTO — A dominant first half by the Calgary Stampeders was the difference, as they came out with a 23-16 victory over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night.

Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell finished the game 33 of 48 for 346 yards and a touchdown. A first-quarter scoring toss to Ka’Deem Carey and a 35-yard connection with Eric Rogers highlighted his evening of work.

Terry Williams led the way for the running backs, gaining 42 all-purpose yards. He opened the scoring with a 24-yard run in the first quarter.

Rogers hauled in six catches for 94 yards on the game. Josh Huff also finished with over 50 yards on four receptions.

The Calgary defence was able to get to the opposing quarterback on six occasions, with Mike Rose and Derek Wiggan nabbing two sacks apiece. Royce Metchie also hauled in an interception in the first half.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed 63 percent of his passes for 86 yards in the loss. He was replaced by James Franklin in the third quarter, and the backup finished with 147 yards and a touchdown on 12 of 16 passing.

The first scoring drive of the contest would come with just over seven minutes to go in the opening frame. Mitchell covered 68 yards in just four plays, starting the drive off with a pair of completions to Colton Hunchak and Aaron Peck for gains of 8 and 13 yards, respectively. An Abdul Kanneh penalty for a horse-collar tackle on Peck would tack on another 15 yards, setting the Stamps up at the opposing 32-yard line. Following another 8-yard connection with Hunchak, Williams would make good on his opening rush of the contest, breaking to the right and tip-toeing the sideline to scamper into the end zone from 24 yards out. Rene Paredes would give the visitors an early 7-0 lead with the point-after.

Bethel-Thompson would look to answer right back with a scoring drive of his own, but while trying to find Rodney Smith down the left sideline, Royce Metchie would get his hands on the ball and toe-tap in bounds for his second interception of the campaign. The Stamps’ offence would immediately convert the turnover into points.

Mitchell found Rogers over the middle, and the receiver turned upfield and made a few defenders missed. After Kennan Gilchrist dragged him down, it stood as a gain of 35, with 23 of those coming after the catch. Hunchak would pick up another 12 on his third reception of the evening before a short pass for Carey saw the running back have open field down the right side. He’d double the Calgary lead following the 11-yard catch and run — as well as Paredes’ second convert — to end the first quarter.

The second quarter would be more of the same for the double blue. They’d make some positive steps towards moving the ball downfield but were forced to punt by the Calgary defence.

The stamps would extend its lead further just two minutes into the second. A pair of Mitchell completions to Huff would see a total of 18 yards gained through the air, but Bear Woods would stuff Terry Williams at the line of scrimmage to force a field goal. Paredes would calmly knock a 42-yarder through the uprights, giving the Stamps a 17-point advantage.

Toronto would get some life following that score, however. A Ronnie Pfeffer punt pinned the Stamps inside their own 15, and on the first play of the drive, Mitchell’s dump pass over the line of scrimmage would be gobbled up by Gilchrist.

The Argos would be set up with the ball already in the red zone, but a sack by Rose on their opening play would push them back to the 20. They’d get that yardage back, as Bethel-Thompson would get the ball into the hands of James Wilder, who rumbled down the left sideline, hurdled Tre Roberson and was tackled at the 2-yard line. Instead of rolling the dice, the Argos opted to take the points. Tyler Crapigna blasted home a 9-yard field goal to get the hosts on the board.

Toronto attempted to go for it on third down with around 1:30 left in the half, but after coming up short, they’d give Calgary the ball at midfield. Mitchell had a 15-yard completion to Williams and another 19-yarder to Rogers but a pair of incompletions stalled the drive. Paredes’ second field goal of the contest — a 17-yarder — gave the Stamps a 20-3 lead heading into halftime.

To open the half, Calgary began to grind out the clock, with Mitchell using short-yardage passing the keep the drive going. They would kill off the opening 5:24 of the third, but Mitchell was picked off by Trumaine Washington just outside of the end zone as he was trying to find a streaking Rogers. The Argos wouldn’t be able to take advantage, however, as they’d go two-and-out.

After that, James Franklin would enter the game for the Argos, and he’d make an immediate impact. He’d air a ball out down the middle to catch a sliding Armanti Edwards, who’d get his hands underneath the ball for a gain of 45 yards. Another gain of seven on a short pass was all the offence could muster other than that. Crapigna would hit a 36-yard field goal and cut the Calgary lead to 14 going into the final frame.

The teams would trade field goals in the fourth quarter, with Paredes hitting a 15-yarder and Crapigna answering with a 35-yard kick of his own. The Argos would add a late score when Franklin found Derel Walker streaking through the middle, but the Stamps would run out the remainder of the clock to secure a 23-16 road win.

With the victory, the Stampeders have won their last four games. They’ll have Week 16 off before returning to action against the Montreal Alouettes on Oct. 5. The Boatmen will welcome the Saskatchewan Roughriders to BMO Field in their next game on Sept. 28.

GAME RECAP
TICATS EDGE ESKS WITH LAST-SECOND FIELD GOAL
CFL.CA STAFF

EDMONTON — Lirim Hajrullahu kicked a 34-yard game-winning field goal as time expired to lift the Hamilton Tiger-Cats over the Edmonton Eskimos with a 30-27 road win on Friday night. The Ticats survived a 24-point comeback to earn the victory, improving their record to 10-3 while clinching a playoff spot.

The Ticats set the tone early on by reaching the end zone on three consecutive offensive drives in the first quarter. Brandon Banks put Hamilton up early with a 42-yard catch-and-run touchdown, and Dane Evans followed it up with a pair of lightning-quick scoring drives that saw him throw deep touchdown passes to Marcus Tucker and Bralon Addison.

17 unanswered points from Edmonton made it a one-possession game late in the third quarter, and the Esks tied the game up in the fourth with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Logan Kilgore.

The game was tied at 27 apiece in the final minute after both teams traded field goals, but Evans led the Ticats’ offence down the field in the final 30 seconds to set up the deciding kick that went off the uprights and in.

Evans started the game on fire by completing his first seven passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns, while Banks surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the third straight season.

The Ticats struck first in the opening quarter when Banks turned on the jets to reach the end zone on a 42-yard touchdown. Evans completed the ensuing two-point conversion pass to Anthony Coombs to give Hamilton an early 8-0 lead.

It did not take long for the Ticats to further increase their momentum, as their defence stepped up on the following drive with a big turnover. Frankie Williams made a diving catch to intercept Kilgore’s pass, and the pick led to points on the very next play.

Evans capitalized on the early opportunity and threw a deep bomb down the field to Tucker for a 41-yard touchdown, with Tucker using straight line speed to beat Josh Johnson in man-to-man coverage for the score. Hajrullahu kicked the extra point to increase Hamilton’s lead to 15 points.

Hamilton’s hot first quarter continued on the team’s next drive when Evans went deep yet again, this time connecting with Addison for a huge 76-yard touchdown. Addison broke a tackle after making the catch and proceeded to outrun Monshadrik Hunter to the end zone. The Ticats attempted the two-point conversion, but Edmonton came up with the stop to keep the score at 21-0.

Hajrullahu extended the Ticats’ lead to 24 points with a 48-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, and the defence came up with another takeaway when Rolle picked off an underthrown pass from Kilgore. But Edmonton got the ball right back a few plays later when linebacker Vontae Diggs intercepted Evans inside the Esks’ 15-yard line to shut down the drive.

The Esks got on the board before half-time with a quick four-play, 51-yard scoring drive that saw Kilgore throw a 29-yard strike to Tevaun Smith before following it up with a six-yard touchdown pass to DaVaris Daniels. Sean Whyte kicked the extra point to make it a 24-7 game heading into the third quarter.

The Ticats attempted to increase their lead with another field goal in the third, but Hajrullahu’s kick went wide to the right and ended up in the waiting hands of Esks returner Christion Jones. Jones then proceeded to make seemingly every Hamilton player on the field miss as he returned the ball 100 yards into the red zone to set up Edmonton’s offence.

Hamilton’s defence held strong to force a field goal, and Whyte made the 22-yard kick to cut the Ticats’ lead down to 14 points.

Edmonton’s defence forced another turnover later in the third quarter when Mathieu Betts stripped the ball from Evans before recovering the fumble himself. The defensive play created momentum, and the Esks found the end zone two plays later when Kilgore hit Greg Ellingson with a 32-yard touchdown strike.

Ellingson somehow managed to come down with the ball in the end zone while being covered closely by Williams, and Whyte added the extra point to make the score 24-17 with under five minutes to go in the third quarter.

Edmonton tied the game early in the fourth after Kilgore scored a one-yard rushing touchdown, but Hamilton regained the lead when Hajrullahu made a 38-yard field goal.

The Esks got the ball back on offence with just over two minutes to play, but Kilgore’s deep pass intended for Daniels was picked off by Rolle.

Edmonton managed to force another punt, and the Esks evened the score with a field goal from Whyte with under a minute left. But Evans made the most of the final possession, and he managed to lead his team to a game-winning field goal despite getting the ball back with only 30 seconds.

Week 16 will see the Hamilton Tiger-Cats square off with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on the road next Friday, while the Edmonton Eskimos will face the Ottawa REDBLACKS on the road next Saturday.

PREVIEW
BOMBERS, ALS SET TO SQUARE OFF IN MONTREAL
CFL.CA STAFF

MONTREAL – Andrew Harris is set to return to the lineup as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers voyage east to take on the Montreal Alouettes Saturday afternoon at Percival Molson Stadium.

Harris had the inside track for both Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian prior to being levied his two-game suspension, and he’ll be looking to pick up where he left off on Friday.

The ageless running back is less than 100 yards shy of his fifth career 1,000-yard rushing season. Despite missing the last two contests, his 908 yards still lead the CFL along with his 6.4 yards per carry.

“It’s been a tough few months,” Harris told BlueBombers.com. “I’ve had a lot of positive support from fans, family and a lot of random people I don’t even know. Overall, it’s been extremely tough, but I’m looking forward to moving forward now and getting back out there with my teammates.”

Second-year Canadian Johnny Augustine filled in admirably for Harris. Augustine put up over 100 all-purpose yards in each of his starts, earning a receiving touchdown in the process. Harris will undoubtedly be the back of choice, but the Blue and Gold now know they have a dependable second option.

Saturday’s matchup features arguably the league’s top two rushers. Opposite Harris is William Stanback, a breakout star for the Alouettes. Stanback also missed a pair of games (due to an injury suffered in Week 8) and is second behind Harris with 6.2 yards per carry.

“Andrew Harris is a Hall of Fame guy,” Als quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. told MontrealAlouettes.com. “He’s been doing it for a long time as a receiver and a running back, but as of right now, I’m picking Stanback over Harris. No disrespect to Andrew Harris, don’t try to mix me up.”

The 25-year-old American hasn’t rushed for over 100 yards since his injury, although he did find the end zone for the first time since early July in the Als loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week. The task will be a tall one for Stanback on Saturday, with the Bombers boasting the league’s best run defence.

Winnipeg allows a mere 67.8 rushing yards per game, by far the lowest in the CFL. Opposing teams only attempt around 13 ground plays against the Bombers in any given game, meaning the Als might have to go to the air to find success against Winnipeg.

The Bombers are looking to exercise some demons on the road. Their first loss of the year came when they were stunned in Hamilton by the Tiger-Cats in Week 7, before the Toronto Argonauts put together a heart-stopping comeback at BMO Field the very next week. All three of Winnipeg’s losses have come away from IG Field, although they did defeat the Als 56-10 last year at Percival Molson Stadium.

John Bowman will be looking to reach a career milestone Saturday. The veteran of 225 CFL games (all with the Als) is one sack shy of moving into sole possession of sixth place on the CFL all-time list. The next time he tosses an opposing quarterback to the turf, it will be his 130th career sack, surpassing Vince Goldsmith.

“I’ve waited my turn, I never forced myself into a situation I wasn’t ready for,” Bowman said when reflecting on his career. “I didn’t come here with no knowledge of pro sports. I wasn’t overly assertive; I listened, I learned, I took my time. If coach asked me to do something, I did it.”

The Bombers feature a star D-lineman of their own. Willie Jefferson has been on a tear as of late, notching seven sacks in his last four games, including a trio against Edmonton in Week 11. Jefferson sits at 11 sacks in 2019, two behind league leader Charleston Hughes.

The Blue Bombers will clinch a playoff spot with a win or a tie on Saturday and would also guarantee a post-season berth if the Ottawa REDBLACKS lose or tie versus the BC Lions. It would be the franchise’s fourth straight year with playoff football.

“We’ve got to take care of business in the coming weeks,” Nic Demski said. “The East is still very promising, but you always know what you’re going to get in the West and it always comes down to crunch time and the last couple of games, so to close out the season against Calgary and have that game in Saskatchewan obviously means a lot and we have a lot of business to take care of.”

BY THE NUMBERS

100 – Als centre Kristian Matte is slated to make his 100th career start Saturday. He has spent his entire nine-year career in Montreal.

4 – With a victory, Winnipeg would reach 10-plus wins for the fourth straight year.

34 – First quarter points allowed by the Alouettes this season – the fewest in the league.

92 – Rushing yards needed for Andrew Harris to reach 1,000 on the season.

Kickoff is at 4 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

PREVIEW
LIONS LOOK TO COMPLETE SWEEP OF REDBLACKS
CFL.CA STAFF

OTTAWA — The Ottawa REDBLACKS and BC Lions will meet Saturday evening in the nation’s capital at TD Place to close out a CFL double-header.

The two teams are meeting the second time in eight days. The Lions earned a 29-5 victory over Ottawa back on Sept. 13 in Vancouver. Lions head coach DeVone Claybrooks expects Ottawa will be a better team the second time around.

“I reiterated the points about playing a team back to back in a home and home series and a lot of teams don’t have success on the back end of that, so we want to make sure we’re one of the teams that are bucking that trend,” Claybrooks said.

“We understand that wins are hard to come by in this league clearly, from our record. You can’t get too high, you have to stay focused on the task at hand the journey of what we’re trying to do. Great teams and teams that compete for championships show up every week.”

On top of getting revenge for their Sept. 13 loss, Ottawa is trying to fight for their fading playoff hopes. Even if they lose to BC this week, they can still catch the Montreal Alouettes in the East Division.

“There’s ebbs and flows in a football game,” REDBLACKS punter Richie Leone said. “Sometimes you think it’s going to go one way. But these guys get paid too. It’s not always going to go the way you want it to be. But we gotta be able to bounce back,”

Despite a losing season, the BC Lions can boast that they’ve had durability at the quarterback position this year. Mike Reilly is the only starting pivot to have played in all of his team’s games this season. The secret to him staying healthy enough to play?

“I’m just hard-headed,” he said. “I know what I had to go through to get the opportunity to play. Having to sit behind Travis (Lulay) for three years, which is a great learning opportunity, but for those three years, I watched so many other teams around the league have their starters get hurt and guys that had been in the league way less than me get the opportunity to play.

“I knew when I finally had the chance it was going to have to be something that literally I couldn’t play. That’s just how I’ve always approached it. I appreciate every time that I get to line up, take the snap and play this game. I never take that for granted.”

Twenty players still remain on the REDBLACKS’ injured list, but they’ll have a few players back in the lineup Saturday. They include Canadian receiver Brad Sinopoli and receiver/returner DeVonte Dedmon.

“It’s always good to get those guys back,” Head Coach Rick Campbell said. “I’m personally always happy for guys when they’re healthy again.”

Dedmon dazzled earlier this season against the Montreal Alouettes when he racked up 377 return yards and two return touchdowns. He hasn’t played since Aug. 2 after reportedly suffering a hamstring injury, and he hopes to bring that game-breaking ability back to the REDBLACKS.

“You need times in the game where you make some big plays, some big game-changing plays that can swing the momentum in your favour and we just haven’t done that part enough,” Dedmon told the Ottawa Citizen earlier this week.

Linebacker Kevin Brown II will also suit up and start Saturday, and Stephane Nembot will backup at right tackle.

As for the Lions, running back Brandon Rutley will be on the one-game injured list. That makes way for running back John White. He’s rushed for 559 yards and five touchdowns this year. Defensive lineman Korey Toomer will also be in the lineup, backing up Jonathan Newsome.

BY THE NUMBERS

23 — The Ottawa REDBLACKS had 23 players on their injured list last week. Last year, the Toronto Argonauts had 24 players on their injured list.

43 — BC Lions quarterback Mike Reilly was sacked 43 times in the first 10 games of the season. In the last two games, he’s only been sacked twice.

10 — For the last 10 games, Ottawa REDBLACKS quarterbacks have thrown more interceptions than touchdowns in each of those games.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

GAME RECAP
ALS COMPLETE INCREDIBLE LAST-MINUTE COMEBACK AGAINST BOMBERS
CFL.CA STAFF

MONTREAL — Vernon Adams jr. led an incredible fourth quarter comeback to lift the Montreal Alouettes over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with a 38-37 home win on Saturday. The Als scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, and Adams engineered a 94-yard game-winning drive in the final minute that ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jake Wieneke.

The Als now hold a 7-5 record after completing the biggest comeback in franchise history.

A dominant opening drive gave the Bombers an early lead. Quarterback Chris Streveler led the offence down the field on the ground and through the air before capping off the drive with his tenth rushing touchdown of the season.

The Als responded with a field goal after an electric kickoff return from Shaquille Murray-Lawrence, but Winnipeg answered right back with another long scoring drive that saw Streveler throw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Darvin Adams. Streveler’s solid opening half kept rolling when he darted to the end zone on a 38-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, but the Als cut into the lead with a six-yard rushing touchdown from Adams.

A gadget 74-yard passing play from Darvin Adams to Andrew Harris set up Streveler’s third rushing touchdown, and the Bombers’ defence extended the lead when a strip sack from defensive lineman Craig Roh resulted in a fumble recovery touchdown for linebacker Kyrie Wilson.

Montreal responded before half-time after an interception from defensive back Ciante Evans and an incredible catch from DeVier Posey set up a touchdown pass from Adams to Chris Matthews. The Bombers extended their lead with a field goal in the third quarter, but the Als made it a two-possession game with just over ten minutes to play after the offence completed a 98-yard touchdown drive.

Adams threw a beautiful 29-yard touchdown strike to Posey with two minutes remaining to cut Winnipeg’s lead down to six points. The Als came up with a huge sack to force a late punt and get the ball back with a minute to go, and a 60-yard catch from Quan Bray put Montreal in scoring position with just over 10 seconds remaining.

Adams finished the game with 488 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 63 per cent of his throws.

A 26-yard rush from Streveler jump-started Winnipeg’s opening drive, and the Bombers moved the ball inside Montreal’s 20-yard line four plays later after Streveler broke free for a nine-yard run. An 11-yard catch from receiver Nic Demski brought the ball down to the one-yard line, and Streveler finished the drive off with a quarterback sneak touchdown to give Winnipeg the early lead.

A huge 58-yard return from Murray-Lawrence on the ensuing kickoff gave Montreal instant momentum, and Adams capitalized by following it up with a 21-yard completion to Wieneke. But the Bombers’ defence managed to hold the Als there and forced Montreal to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Boris Bede to cut into the lead.

The Bombers came storming back to respond on their next drive. A 19-yard rush from Harris on a sweep play set up a 13-yard touchdown pass from Streveler to Adams, and Justin Medlock kicked the extra point to give Winnipeg a 14-3 lead.

Streveler’s big rushing day continued in the second quarter when the quarterback got to the left edge for a 38-yard touchdown run. The Bombers blocked it perfectly up front, leading to Streveler going untouched as he sprinted towards the end zone for the score.

Adams got the passing game going on Montreal’s next drive with a 44-yard strike to Wieneke. A 13-yard catch-and-run from Posey brought the ball into scoring position, and Adams capped off the drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Bede kicked the extra point to cut Winnipeg’s lead down to 11 points.

The Bombers dialed up a gadget play to retake momentum on the following drive, as Adams took a direct snap before throwing a 74-yard pass to Harris. Harris gained 39 yards after the catch, broke multiple tackles and nearly scored before going down at the one-yard line. Streveler finished the drive with his third rushing touchdown of the game, and Medlock added the extra point to put Winnipeg up 28-10.

Winnipeg’s defence further increased momentum when Roh got to Adams for a strip sack, and Wilson recovered the fumble before taking it 20 yards to the end zone for the defensive score. But Medlock missed the extra point, leaving the Bombers with a 34-10 lead.

Montreal managed to get things going shortly before half-time after the defence shifted momentum. Evans accelerated to jump a route and intercept Streveler’s pass, and Adams seized the opportunity by leading his team to points in the final minute.

Posey climbed the ladder for a highlight-reel 12-yard grab to secure a fresh set of downs, and Adams capped off the drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Matthews. Bede kicked the extra point to make the score 34-17 heading into the half.

The Bombers added to their lead with a 30-yard field goal from Medlock in the third quarter, but Montreal began to move the ball again in the fourth. Adams spun away from Willie Jefferson to complete a 14-yard pass to receiver Felix Faubert-Lussier, and the big play set up a 10-yard touchdown pass to Matthews.

Bede added the extra point to make it a two-possession game with just under 12 minutes remaining. Winnipeg attempted to extend the lead with a 53-yard field goal, but Medlock’s kick was denied after it hit the right upright.

Adams found a passing rhythm down the stretch, but a timely interception from defensive back Jeff Hecht at Winnipeg’s three-yard line put an end to the promising drive.

The Als made things interesting by driving down the field in the final minutes with an 83-yard scoring drive. Adams capped it off with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Posey, and Bede kicked the extra point to make the score 37-31.

A sack from defensive end John Bowman forced a late punt and gave Montreal another chance on offence, and the Als made the most of the opportunity by driving nearly 100 yards for the game-winning score.

Week 16 will see the Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the East-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats next Friday, while the Montreal Alouettes will face the BC Lions on the road next Saturday.

GAME RECAP
LIONS ROLL OVER REDBLACKS FOR BIGGEST WIN OF SEASON
CFL.CA STAFF

OTTAWA — A dominant performance on both sides of the ball led the BC Lions to a 40-7 road win over the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Saturday night. The Lions improved their record to 3-10 after winning back-to-back games against Ottawa and scoring 40 points for the first time this season.

The Lions’ defence forced six consecutive two and outs while holding quarterback Jonathon Jennings to just 16 passing yards in the first half. Touchdowns from John White and Shaq Johnson combined with three field goals from Sergio Castillo to give the Lions a 25-point lead entering the fourth quarter, and the Lions extended their lead with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Mike Reilly to Bryan Burnham. Castillo added his fourth field goal to seal the victory.

Reilly passed for 353 yards while completing 78 per cent of his passes, and Johnson had his best CFL performance with 160 receiving yards on just three catches.

Burnham caught nine of his 12 targets for 135 yards, taking the league lead while surpassing 1,000 receiving yards for the fourth straight season.

Odell Willis recorded his 100th career sack, becoming the 12th player in CFL history to reach the milestone.

Ottawa took an early two-point lead after the Lions conceded a safety deep in their own end, but the Lions grabbed the lead after a big 43-yard pass from Reilly to Johnson led to a seven-yard touchdown run from White.

The Lions extended their lead in the second quarter on a gadget play that saw Duron Carter throw a perfect 67-yard touchdown pass to Johnson. Castillo kicked the extra point to put BC up 14-2.

The REDBLACKS came up with a solid play on defence when defensive back Chris Randle intercepted a pass intended for Lemar Durant, but the offence was unable to convert the turnover into points.

BC extended its lead to 15 points with a 28-yard field goal from Castillo late in the second quarter, and Castillo added an 18-yard field goal in the final seconds before half-time after BC forced another quick punt.

The Lions came roaring out of the gate to start the third quarter, as Reilly found Burnham deep down the field for a 55-yard gain just two plays into the first drive. Reilly followed up the big play with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Carter, and Castillo added the extra point to give the Lions a commanding 27-2 lead.

Ottawa moved into scoring range after receiver DeVonte Dedmon beat cornerback Crezdon Butler deep for a 41-yard gain, but Butler bounced back on the very next play to pick off Jennings and give the ball to the Lions.

The turnover led to Castillo’s third field goal of the game, and the 42-yard kick put BC up by 28 points with seven minutes to go in the third quarter.

Jennings found another big play through the air when he connected with receiver R.J. Harris for a 43-yard pickup, but the REDBLACKS opted to settle for a 28-yard field goal from Lewis Ward after the drive stalled.

William Arndt came in at quarterback for Ottawa near the end of the third, and the REDBLACKS added a point to their total after a missed field goal from Ward resulted in a single.

But the Lions held on to momentum when they extended their lead later in the fourth quarter. Reilly engineered a 60-yard drive that saw him cap it off with a 14-yard touchdown toss to Burnham, and Castillo added the extra point to put BC up 37-6.

The Lions extended their lead with a 28-yard field goal from Castillo, and the REDBLACKS added a point down the stretch after a 77-yard punt from Richie Leone resulted in a single.

Both teams will be in action again next Saturday in Week 16, with the Ottawa REDBLACKS hosting the Edmonton Eskimos before the BC Lions host the Montreal Alouettes.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 16
David Schwab

This past weekend of betting action in the CFL got underway with pair of inter-division matchups. Calgary got things started by squeezing past Toronto 23-16 in a tight cover as a 6 ½-point road favorite. Hamilton kept the trend going as a slight 1 ½-point favorite on the road with a 30-27 victory over Edmonton.

Saturday’s doubleheader of inter-division games saw Montreal sneak past Winnipeg 38-37 closing as a slight 2 ½-point home favorite. In another West Division victory as a 3 ½-point road favorite, British Columbia clobbered Ottawa 40-7 to close out Week 15.

Friday, Sept. 27

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (10-3 SU, 8-4-1 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-4 SU, 9-4 ATS)
Point-spread: Winnipeg -4
Total: 48

Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats are firmly in control of the East Division title race with five SU victories in their last six games. They have gone 3-2-1 against the spread in that same span with the total staying UNDER in three of their last five contests. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of Hamilton’s 13 games this season. After posting 21 unanswered points in the first quarter against Edmonton, the Tiger-Cats needed a last-second field goal to secure the win. Dane Evans put the ball up 30 times and he completed 22 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns.

With the Blue Bombers’ loss to Montreal, their lead in the West Division title race has quickly disappeared. They have lost two of their last three games SU and Saturday was the first time they failed to cover ATS in their last five games. The total has stayed UNDER in three of Winnipeg’s las four home games. Quarterback Matt Nichols remains out with a shoulder injury. In his place, Chris Streveler ended Saturday’s game with 180 yards passing with one touchdown throw and one interception. The Blue Bombers blew a 20-point fourth quarter lead in that stunning loss.

Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has a 3-1-1 edge ATS in its last five games against the Blue Bombers and it is 11-5 SU in the last 16 meetings in this inter-division clash. The total has stayed UNDER in the last five meetings overall.

Saturday, Sept. 28

Edmonton Eskimos (6-7 SU, 4-9 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (3-10 SU, 4-9 ATS)

Point-spread: TBA
Total: TBA

Game Overview

The Eskimos slipped below .500 with Friday’s loss but they are still in position for a crossover spot in the playoffs out of the West. They have now lost their last four games both straight-up and against the spread with the total going OVER in four of their last five contests. Edmonton is 2-4 ATS in six pervious road games and it failed to cover as a 10-point home favorite in a tight 16-12 victory against Ottawa on Aug. 9. Logan Kilgore got the start at quarterback on Friday night and he threw for 223 yards and a score while also tossing three interceptions.

Ottawa extended its current SU losing streak to six games with this latest blowout loss. It has also failed to cover in its last five contests while averaging just 10.8 points per game. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the RedBlacks’ last six outings. This loss also completed a home-and-home sweep by the Lions by a combined score of 69-12. It is hard to see Ottawa playing any worse, but it is a distinct possibility given the poor play on either side of the ball.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton is 4-1 SU in its last five games against the RedBlacks and the total stayed UNDER in all five meetings. The total has also stayed UNDER in six of the last seven meetings in Ottawa.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (2-10 SU, 5-5-2 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -6
Total: 51

Game Overview

Coming off a bye week, the Roughriders are 7-1 SU in their last eight games, but they have failed to cover in their last three outings. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last six games. They started the season series against Toronto with a 32-7 victory at home on July 1 to easily cover as heavy 11 ½-point favorites. Saskatchewan is 3-2 ATS on the road this season and 5-3 ATS when closing as a favorite. Cody Fajardo is ranked fourth in the CFL in total passing yards (2,862) and he has tossed 10 touchdowns against seven interceptions.

Toronto’s loss to Calgary was its fourth SU setback in its last five games with a 2-1-2 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER the closing 53-point spread in that game after going OVER in four of its previous five outings. The Argonauts are 3-2-1 ATS in six home games this season and they are an even 5-5-2 ATS in 12 games closing as underdogs. James Franklin replaced McLeod Bethel-Thompson at quarterback in the second half. He completed 12-of-16 passes for 147 yards and a score.

Betting Trends

-- Saskatchewan has won six of the last seven meetings SU with a 5-2 edge ATS. The total stayed UNDER 52 points in the first meeting this season.

Montreal Alouettes (7-5 SU, 7-5 ATS) at British Columbia (3-10 SU, 6-7 ATS)
Point-spread: BC -3
Total: 49 ½

Game Overview

Montreal is still 2 ½ games in back of Hamilton in the East Standings, but maintaining pressure with four SU victories in its last five games. Betting on the Alouettes remains a mixed bag at 3-4 ATS in their last seven outings. The total went way OVER 47 points in Saturday’s wild win after staying UNDER in three of their previous five games. Vernon Adams Jr. continues to be the big story in Montreal this season. He helped engineer the three-touchdown comeback on Saturday as part of his 488 passing yards on the day. He threw four touchdowns against one interception while completing 27 of his 43 passing attempts. Unfortunately, he is out of this game due to a one-game league suspension.

BC has very few losses to give at 3-10 overall to stay in playoff contention. The sweep against Ottawa followed a SU seven-game losing streak. The Lions are a profitable 5-1 ATS over their last six games with the total staying UNDER in their last five games. Mike Reilly successfully followed up a solid performance against Ottawa in the series opener. He completed 77.8 percent of his 27 passing attempts in the rematch for 353 yards and two scores verse one interception. BC added 144 yards on ground in that win.

Betting Trends

-- BC has covered ATS in nine of its last 10 home games against the Alouettes and it is 7-1 SU in the last eight meetings at BC Place. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings overall.

GAME RECAP
EVANS LEADS TICATS PAST BOMBERS IN BATTLE OF FIRST-PLACE TEAMS
CFL.CA STAFF

WINNIPEG — Dane Evans passed for 359 yards and three touchdowns to lead the East-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 33-13 road win over the West-leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night. Hamilton improves to an 11-3 record after handing the Bombers their first loss at home this season.

Both teams traded eight-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter, with Andrew Harris and Bralon Addison both finding the end zone. Evans was firing on all cylinders early, and the Ticats extended their first-half lead with a short field goal and a touchdown catch from Brandon Banks.

A 52-yard pass from Evans to Marcus Tucker set up a one-yard touchdown run from quarterback David Watford, and the Bombers responded with a field goal just before half-time. Evans finished the first half with 308 passing yards while completing 81 per cent of his throws.

After trading field goals in the third quarter, both defences came up with interceptions in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Justin Tuggle returned a pick 80 yards to set up Tyrell Sutton‘s first touchdown as a Ticat.

Banks reeled in all eight of his targets for 113 yards, eclipsing the 100-yard receiving mark for the sixth time this season. Ticats linebacker Simoni Lawrence set a CFL record with 17 tackles.

Harris surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the third straight season and fifth time in his career.

The Bombers marched down the field on their opening possession with an 11-play, 73-yard scoring drive after their defence forced a quick punt. Kenny Lawler sparked the drive with a 21-yard catch, and Streveler and Harris moved the ball on the ground to set up an early touchdown. Harris capped off the drive by finding the end zone on an eight-yard catch-and-run, his fourth touchdown reception of the season.

But Hamilton responded right away, and Bralon Addison continued his solid play by stretching the field and reeling in a 44-yard pass on the Ticats’ second drive. Addison also finished off the drive, as Evans found the big-play receiver again for an eight-yard touchdown three plays later. Lirim Hajrullahu kicked the extra point to tie the game.

The Ticats continued to move the ball on their next drive, with Banks and Sutton coming up with big first down gains through the air. Nikola Kalinic nearly scored a touchdown on second and goal, but he stepped out of bounds just before reaching out for the goal line. The Ticats settled for a nine-yard field goal from Hajrullahu to grab a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.

Hamilton’s defence held quarterback Chris Streveler and the Bombers’ offence in check early on, and the Ticats capitalized once again after forcing another punt. Banks showcased his vision and speed on the ensuing drive with a huge 41-yard catch-and-run that gave the Ticats major momentum. Evans found Banks again three plays later with an accurate 10-yard touchdown strike, and Hajrullahu added the extra point to extend Hamilton’s lead to 10 points.

The Bombers were unable to answer back, and Evans continued his strong half on Hamilton’s next drive by finding Tucker deep down the field for a 52-yard gain in the final two minutes of the quarter. Tucker beat defensive back Marcus Sayles on the play and nearly scored before being ruled down at the one-yard line. The big play led to a quarterback sneak touchdown from Watford, and Hajrullahu kicked the convert to give the Ticats a 24-7 lead.

Winnipeg responded just before half-time with a 42-yard field goal from Justin Medlock that cut Hamilton’s lead down to 14 points.

The Bombers gained more ground on the Ticats with a 47-yard field goal from Medlock to start the third quarter, but Hamilton regained their 14-point lead after a 21-yard catch from Banks set up a 49-yard field goal from Hajrullahu.

Winnipeg stepped up on defence early in the fourth quarter and came up with a turnover when linebacker Adam Bighill intercepted a throw from Evans. But the ball went right back the other way when Tuggle picked off Streveler and returned the interception 80 yards into scoring range.

The turnover led to Sutton’s first touchdown as a Ticat, as the running back caught an eight-yard touchdown from Evans to extend Hamilton’s lead. Hajrullahu added the extra point to put the Tabbies up 33-13 with just over ten minutes to play.

The Bombers were driving late, but a shot towards the end zone from Streveler to Darvin Adams ended up being intercepted by defensive back Jumal Rolle.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are set to host the Edmonton Eskimos next Friday, while the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will travel to take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders next Saturday in Week 17 action.

PREVIEW
REDBLACKS, ESKS LOOK TO GET ON TRACK IN OTTAWA
CFL.CA STAFF

OTTAWA — The Ottawa REDBLACKS and Edmonton Eskimos are both looking to snap out of mid-season slumps on Saturday afternoon at TD Place.

Edmonton will visit Ottawa in their second meetup of the season, when the two sides meet in a cross-division duel. The Esks can sweep their season series with a win, having already defeated Ottawa at home, 16-12, back on Aug. 9.

Head Coach Jason Maas knows what’s at stake –securing their hold on the crossover playoff spot, which would in turn gravely affect the REDBLACKS’ faint playoff chances.

“Every week gives you a little different motivation, but this week we know what’s in store for us if we win this game and it’s a motivating factor for sure,” Maas said.

Both teams have been winless since August. Edmonton last won Aug. 16, defeating the Toronto Argonauts. The team has lost four straight since. Ottawa last won Aug. 2, a 30-27 overtime win over the Montreal Alouettes, and has lost six consecutive games since.

Both teams will be in peculiar situations with their quarterbacks. Edmonton will be without star quarterback Trevor Harris, who’s been placed on the six-game injured list.

Harris left a Week 13 against the Calgary Stampeders following an injury to his throwing arm, and hasn’t suited up since. Harris has thrown for 3,706 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, four interceptions, all with a 71.7 per cent completion rate in his first season in Edmonton.

Backup quarterback Logan Kilgore has had to pick up the slack in his absence. In two games this season, the California native has thrown 465 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and four interceptions. Three of his interceptions came against Hamilton last week, en route to a 30-27 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

As for the REDBLACKS, quarterback Jonathon Jennings is listed as the starter for Saturday’s game. But according to Head Coach Rick Campbell, Dominique Davis will also see time.

“It’s not an ideal situation,” Campbell said. “I don’t think you ever think this would be the best case scenario. But I know the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result. We don’t have a set rotation. It’s not an experiment, it’s not a pre-season game.

“We’re just trying to change up looks. It’s not about trying to prove a point or evaluate. It’s about trying to find a way to win this game. Hopefully we’ll throw Edmonton off a bit with some different looks and a different guy playing quarterback.”

“It’s definitely not a situation I wanted to be in, but I respect coach’s decision,” Davis said. “Me and Jon are going to work together and get a W.”

The REDBLACKS will also be without two kick returners in Stefan Logan and Devonte Dedmon, as they’ve both been placed on the injured list. Dedmon last scored on a return in his team’s last victory over Montreal. Wide receiver Caleb Holley will be in the lineup. Defensive lineman Darius Jackson has also been added.

Linebacker Jeff Knox Jr. will also sit out and has been placed on the one-game injured list. He’ll be replaced by linebacker Jerod Fernandez.

Edmonton running back Shaq Cooper and punter Hugh O’Neill will be in the lineup, while linebacker Blair Smith and offensive lineman Tommie Draheim will both come out. They are both on the injured list.

BY THE NUMBERS

22 — Since Week 10, Edmonton linebacker Larry Dean has had 22 tackles. That’s the fourth-most in that time span, trailing Hamilton’s Simoni Lawrence, Montreal’s Henoc Muamba, and Calgary’s Jamar Wall.

129 — Edmonton receiver Greg Ellingson is 129 yards away from reaching 1,000 receiving yards on the season. The former REDBLACKS pass catcher would reach that mark for the fifth straight year. He also has at least one catch in his last 56 games.

6 — The REDBLACKS’ losing streak of six games is their longest since their expansion season in 2014.

44 — Ottawa hasn’t scored an offensive touchdown in two games, or 44 offensive possessions to be specific.

Kickoff is at 4 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

PREVIEW
FRANKLIN, ARGOS LOOK TO SOLVE SURGING RIDERS
CFL.CA STAFF

TORONTO — The Saskatchewan Roughriders will get to scratch the two-week itch and return to the field on Saturday evening when they face the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field.

The Roughriders were hot heading into their bye week, having won seven of their previous eight games. Thanks to their recent stretch of good form, the Riders can guarantee themselves a playoff berth with a victory over Toronto.

“It hasn’t been the talk around the locker room,” defensive back Ed Gainey told Riderville.com when asked about clinching a playoff spot. “The guys know what we have at stake. These last six games being against mostly western opponents, it’s going to come down to the wire. I guess our antennas are up a little bit more and we’re just taking it a day at a time.”

Cody Fajardo has been getting the headlines for the Riders, and rightfully so, but William Powell was a key to Saskatchewan’s success in recent weeks. In the team’s only loss over the last eight games, Powell was limited to only one rushing yard on four carries.

Toronto’s run defence is ranked eighth in the league, giving up an average of nearly 120 yards per game. When the teams met in Week 3, Powell earned over 100 all-purpose yards in a commanding win.

Fajardo has good memories of that Week 3 matchup. It served as the quarterback’s coming out party, as he passed for 430 yards and two touchdowns. Fajardo also plunged into the end zone for a score, capping off his first win as a starter.

“We want to take care of the football and we want to be good on first down,” head coach Craig Dickenson said. “A lot of takeaways happen when you’re in second and longs. Our focus is to be efficient with what we’re doing and make Toronto earn it if they’re going to score.”

One of the CFL’s greats is looking to inch closer to a career milestone Saturday. S.J. Green is 150 yards shy of 10,000 receiving yards in his career. The 13-year veteran has caught passes from two of the game’s legends – Anthony Calvillo and Ricky Ray – and is a three-time Grey Cup champion.

Green will have to turn it on in the latter part of the season if he hopes to reach the 1,000-yard mark for the seventh time in his career, and he only has two touchdown receptions this season.

The man tasked with helping Green eclipse the 10,000-yard plateau is James Franklin. Franklin took over for McLeod Bethel-Thompson midway through Toronto’s loss to the Calgary Stampeders last week. Franklin got the Argonauts within a touchdown late, but ultimately couldn’t make up the deficit.

“I’m just trying to help this team win,” Franklin told Argonauts.ca. “Keeping a good attitude is the biggest thing. Coming here [last season], I kind of conditioned myself to think ‘safe throw, be careful, don’t try to make anything happen’. Some people say if you don’t take risks you don’t grow, and I wasn’t doing much growing.”

With Franklin behind centre, Derel Walker’s play is worth keeping an eye on. Walker caught five passes for 123 yards through the first two games of the season – both of which were Franklin starts. The two-time CFL All-Star seemed to click with Bethel-Thompson and is now leading Toronto with 949 receiving yards this season.

“It’s always a tough decision there,” Head Coach Corey Chamblin said when asked about starting Franklin. “In the latter part of the game, there was a bit of a spark there with James. Where we are in the season, you’re not just looking for offensive output, but to generate some points. Hopefully we can get that done with James.”

While Fajardo had a field day when the teams met in early July, Franklin struggled, throwing for 224 yards and two picks. It was also the game in which the 28-year-old pivot got injured, clearing the way for Bethel-Thompson to take the reins of the offence.

This will be a homecoming of sorts for Fajardo, who spent two seasons sporting double blue. While clinching a playoff spot is motivation enough, doing so in front of your old teammates would be extra sweet for the quarterback.

The Riders made a splash a few weeks ago with the signing of Jordan Williams-Lambert. The receiver notched 764 receiving yards for Saskatchewan last season, but he’s being given one more week to learn the offence before being thrown into game action.

Charleston Hughes will return to the Riders’ lineup after missing one game due to injury, while offensive guard Brendon LaBatte makes his 2019 debut.

For the Argos, defensive end Robbie Smith has been added to the six-game injured list, while Jonathon Mincy will make his first start as an Argo at corner since signing a couple of weeks ago. Mincy was a star with the Alouettes before spending time with the NFL’s Chicago Bears.

BY THE NUMBERS

6 – Straight wins for Saskatchewan versus Toronto – the longest winning streak for the franchise against the Argos.

686 – In addition to nearing 10,000 yards, S.J. Green is 14 catches away from 700 in his career.

4-0 – Riders record when coming off the bye over the last two seasons.

4 – Consecutive games with a touchdown for Derel Walker.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.
