PREVIEW

BOMBERS, ALOUETTES SEEK FIRST WIN ON FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes could use a break.

The team is on a 12-game losing streak dating back to August of last season, and despite a bright start in BC last week ultimately fell 22-10 to the Lions.

Mike Sherman’s Als return home this week to host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday Night Football in a Week 2 game with potentially huge implications; Montreal is teetering on the edge of the same abyss as 2017, and a 13th-straight defeat would set the team on course to replicate last year’s last-place finish.

Quarterback Drew Willy showed flashes against the Lions, but the question remains: Will the Alouettes be able to move the chains consistently?

On the Winnipeg side of the matchup, Mike O’Shea’s Bombers dropped a 33-30 decision in last week’s weather-delayed Thunder Bowl. Rookie gunslinger Chris Streveler — on in place of injured starter Matt Nichols — showed legitimate playmaking ability (three TDs) as well as some inexperience (two INTs), but overall looked capable of running an offence efficiently.

“He handles the huddle well,” Bombers offensive coordinator Paul LaPolice told BlueBombers.com. “Some guys get it in the huddle and they’re nervous. He doesn’t need the play call read to him. He hears it once and can repeat it. All those things are about a guy having a command and a presence. And he has that.”

Streveler will make his second professional start on Friday night against a former Bomber in Willy; the 31-year-old Als pivot started 29 games over three seasons (2014-16) with Winnipeg.

Few players have spent more time at the stadium and in the film room than Streveler, a true rookie out of South Dakota.

“He spends a lot of time in the building,” continued LaPolice. “He doesn’t speak too much…sometimes guys are trying to show you how much they know. He doesn’t do that. But if you ask him a question, he’s got an answer.”

Answers are something the Bombers will hope to have against former teammate Willy.

“Some of the things we liked about Drew, and the reason we brought him here in the first place, are the things that he’s going to show again,” said Winnipeg head coach Mike O’Shea. “He’s going to throw accurate footballs…be able to push the ball down the field…get out of a jam with his legs.”

With that said, O’Shea believes his team is better today than it was under the now-Alouettes pivot.

“He did well for us here for a time,” continued O’Shea. “If you look at our team now compared to the team Drew Willy was leading, we’re a better football team now. Drew worked extremely hard, did well and got us off to a helluva good start — 5-1 and 6-3 (in 2014) and then sometimes everything just sort of catches up with you.”

The wholesale personnel changes made by Montreal have made preparing for Rich Stubler’s Alouette defence a difficult task early in 2018.

In addition to former Bomber Jamaal Westerman up front, Montreal added the likes of Tommie Campbell (Calgary) and Mitchell White (Toronto) in the secondary and Henoc Muamba (Saskatchewan) at linebacker.

“I was watching film of Montreal from last year and I think out of their front six only one of them is playing in his original spot,” said Winnipeg centre Matthias Goossen. “I could watch six different games… I could watch Westerman with Winnipeg last year, Henoc from Sask… it’s just so hard to watch film that way. That’s why it’s difficult in the early part of the season because you don’t have a lot of film to study.”

For Richie Hall’s defensive unit, there was a sense that last week’s three-point loss in Edmonton was an unjust outcome.

“I felt great about (the defence). Contested balls, 50-50…to have three big plays…we were in position with hands up,” said Bombers linebacker Adam Bighill. “If they make a great play, shoot, that’s football. We’ll live to play another down. As long as the ball is not over our head with a miscommunication and no one in sight, I could care less. Guys were fighting hard.”

The Bombers’ roster will see four changes from Week 1; Maurice Leggett and Ian Wild both return to Winnipeg’s ridiculously deep linebacker corps, freshly-signed Mitchell Gale will slot in at QB-3 on the depth chart and national running back Kienan LaFrance slides in to back up Andrew Harris.

Leggett is easing back from injury, and has recorded 50 or more tackles in each of his four seasons as a Bomber, while the dependable Wild has had two of his last three seasons derailed by injury. Gale last suited up for BC in 2017, while LaFrance rushed for 273 yards and a pair of touchdowns with Saskatchewan.

Despite 12 straight losses, including a tough start to the season in BC, the Als are enjoying the optimism of a new season and a fresh start.

Rich Stubler’s defence looked decent against BC, but Khari Jones’s offence sputtered and died after a couple big-time plays in the first quarter. The end result was a disappointing 22-10 loss, but quarterback Drew Willy believes the first quarter serves as a glimpse of what could be for the Alouette offence in 2018.

“We got off to a fast start, (with) a touchdown on the first series — two, one got brought back — (but) we were able to deal with some adversity,” Willy told MontrealAlouettes.com. “Any time you can get off to a fast start, it’s good. We need to put more drives like that together.”

Of course, the familiarity factor with Willy — less than two years removed from his Bomber days — and the Winnipeg defence could be key come Friday night.

“I practised against those guys for two and a half years, (and) still have some really good friends there — that’s the thing about the CFL, it’s a league (where) a lot of people know each other,” continued Willy. “They’ll have some things on me, I’ll have some things on them, but it’s whoever executes the game plan better.”

T.J. Graham remains out for the Alouettes after missing the season-opener, but other than that the Als boast a deep receiving corps that could benefit from the speed of off-season addition Chris Williams. Williams fell two yards shy of a hundred in his first game as an Alouette, catching six passes for 98 yards and on one play getting behind the Lions’ defence.

He’ll keep a Bombers’ secondary honest, the same one that was burned for a 101-yard touchdown by Derel Walker last week and allowed 408 yards to Mike Reilly in a Week 1 loss.

In order to stretch the field with their dangers receivers, however, the Als’ O-line will have to protect Willy, which will be a test following an injury to Ruben Carter. The Als will start national Sean Jamieson in his spot at right tackle after the O-line allowed five sacks in its debut.

The Als are leaving the door open for John Bowman to make his 2018 debut after missing the opener, but the veteran defensive end could be a game time decision.

Cruchin’ Numbers:

5 – League-high sacks allowed by Montreal in Week 1. For Drew Willy to be effective, the Alouette offensive line is going to have to afford him the protection and time to make plays.

13 – Quarterbacks who have started a game for Montreal since Anthony Calvillo’s last game in August 2013 (Josh Neiswander, Troy Smith, Tanner Marsh, Jonathan Crompton, Alex Brink, Rakeem Cato, Kevin Glenn, Brandon Bridge, Vernon Adams, Darian Durant, Drew Willy, Matt Shiltz).

110 – Yard field-goal return touchdown for Kevin Fogg last week against Edmonton. If you missed it, it was the kind of play that makes special teams ‘special‘.

1,192 – Career points for Winnipeg kicker Justin Medlock, who is on milestone watch this week as he closes in on the 1,200 mark. The veteran out of UCLA’s career kicking percentage is 86.2 per cent, and he has been at or over 80 per cent in every season since 2011 en route to becoming the CFL’s undisputed premier kicker.

To say this is a big game for both the Bombers and Alouettes is an understatement.

Winnipeg has plenty to prove, chiefly whether it can win with Chris Streveler under centre.

The Alouettes are looking to avoid their 13th straight loss and subsequently slide further into a hole at the bottom of the East Division standings.

Winnipeg was carved up at times by Mike Reilly and the Eskimos offence in Week 1; Montreal’s offence failed to break down BC for the bulk of their season opener on the west coast.

You don’t want to throw the term ‘must-win’ out there this early in the season, but it certainly feels like it’s valid — especially in Alouette-land, where the pain of last season is only a few losses away from threatening to repeat itself.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+.

BOMBERS DOMINATE ALL PHASES, CRUSH ALOUETTES 56-10

MONTREAL — Any questions surrounding rookie quarterback Chris Streveler‘s ability to lead the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were answered on Friday night, as the 23-year-old pivot threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in a dominant 56-10 win over the Montreal Alouettes.

Streveler’s gaudy half-time numbers told one part of Friday’s contest: 18 completions on 22 attempts, 196 pass yards, two touchdowns. With 55 rush yards and a touchdown on the ground.

The other story of Friday’s one-sided game at Percival Molson Stadium?

Tristan Okpalaugo with two of Winnipeg’s three first-half sacks, as part of a larger effort by the Bomber defence to limit Montreal to just 95 yards of offence in the first half.

In other words: At 34-7 after 30 minutes of football, the front end of Friday Night Football’s doubleheader was decided.

The Bombers opened the scoring on the first drive of the evening, as a Streveler-led drive set up a 13-yard Justin Medlock chip-shot field goal.

Okpalaugo and the Winnipeg defence then set the tone on Montreal’s first offensive snap of the ballgame, as the 28-year-old brought down Als quarterback Drew Willy for a loss of eight yards.

Paul LaPolice’s Bomber offence then mixed it up on its next possession, with Streveler lateraling across to Darvin Adams to set up a flea-flicker pass to Andrew Harris in the end zone. Medlock’s convert gave Winnipeg a 10-0 lead.

The Bomber defence then got to Willy again, as Drake Nevis levelled the Montreal pivot with a crunching sack.

Montreal showed some life early in the second quarter, as a powerful 44-yard Tyrell Sutton run set up a Willy-to-B.J. Cunningham touchdown connection. Boris Bede‘s convert cut the hosts’ deficit to just three points.

Winnipeg’s offence roared in response, with a number of Streveler completions setting up a 10-yard touchdown pass to Nic Demski; Medlock’s convert gave the Bombers a 17-7 lead.

Things began to unravel for the Alouettes later in the second quarter; the strong field position earned by a Stefan Logan kick return was negated by a monster sack from Okpalaugo — his second of the night — on Willy.

After that two-and-out, Streveler marched the Bombers back inside the red zone and proceeded to find his former college roommate Drew Wolitarsky in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown. Medlock’s convert extended the Bombers’ lead to 17 points.

The second quarter went from bad to worse for the Alouettes on the ensuing drive.

A Willy pass was intercepted by Okpalaugo, only to be brought back on an offside penalty against the latter; Winnipeg defensive back Anthony Gaitor then sacked Willy heavily on the next play for a loss of 12 yards; Boris Bede’s subsequent third-down punt was blocked by Rashaun Simonise and recovered by the Bombers inside Montreal’s 5-yard line.

Two plays later, Streveler punched it in from the goal line himself; the following Medlock convert and a final-play field goal from 40 yards out sent Winnipeg to the locker room with a 34-7 lead.

Medlock and Bede traded third-quarter field goals, and a further Medlock boot from 33 yards out pushed the lead to 40-10.

Two second-half hits from the Alouettes — Jermaine Robinson‘s low tackle on Harris, and then Henoc Muamba with a high tackle on Streveler — resulted in tempers flaring, and when Streveler found Wolitarsky in the fourth quarter for the duo’s second touchdown of the night, emotions ran high. Medlock’s convert made it a 47-10 ballgame.

Montreal’s offence continued to struggle, and Bede conceded a safety.

Winnipeg, meanwhile, continued to show off its quarterback depth; Bryan Bennett relieved Streveler — who started in place of injured regular Matt Nichols — in fashion with three completions for 71 yards and an electrifying 31-yard run.

Bennett’s debut drive culminated in Kienan LaFrance’s first rush touchdown as a Bomber; Medlock’s convert rounded out the scoring on the night and brought the score to 56-10.

Chris Streveler’s final line read 22 of 28 passes completed for 246 yards and three touchdowns.

Montreal linebacker Henoc Muamba registered a game-high 11 tackles in the defeat; nine different players hauled in a catch for Winnipeg.

With the win, the Bombers improved to 1-1 on the young season and now face a Week-3 trip to Tim Horton’s Field to face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday Night Football (7 p.m. ET).

The loss dropped the Alouettes to 0-2 on the campaign; Mike Sherman’s team will head west in Week 3 for a date with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday evening (9 p.m. ET).

GAME RECAP

MASOLI, TASKER LEAD TICATS TO ROAD WIN OVER ESKS

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos couldn’t find an answer for Jeremiah Masoli and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ offence on Friday night, as the versatile quarterback led his team to an impressive 38-21 victory on the road.

Masoli threw for over 300 yards for the second straight week, finishing 19 of 29 for 332 yards and three touchdown passes. The dual-threat passer also added seven carries for 59 rushing yards, and Luke Tasker also contributed a big performance by hauling in five catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

Ticats running back Mercer Timmis had a breakout performance on the ground, racking up 133 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Brandon Banks also had a big game with six catches for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Mike Reilly and the Esks’ offence put together some big plays, including an 88-yard touchdown pass, but in the end it was not enough to keep pace with Masoli and the Ticats.

The Ticats came out strong to start the game, with quarterback Jeremiah Masoli quickly engineering Hamilton’s first touchdown drive of the season. The 29-year-old dual-threat passer found receiver Terrence Toliver for 27 yards right out of the gate. Toliver was making his return to the Ticats after missing most of the 2017 season with an injury. Masoli then found receiver Luke Tasker for a 15-yard catch-and-run touchdown to help give Hamilton the opening lead.

But quarterback Mike Reilly and the Eskimos wasted no time in responding, with the veteran gunslinger quickly bringing his team down the field just a couple plays later. Reilly demonstrated his ability to connect on the deep ball, finding a streaking D’haquille “Duke” Williams deep down the field for a monster 88-yard touchdown, swinging momentum in Edmonton’s favour.

The Ticats kept things rolling on offence upon getting the ball back, and Masoli showed how dangerous he can be as both a rusher and a passer. The versatile quarterback led his team down the field with a 31-yard pass to receiver Brandon Banks and a 20-yard sprint up the middle to put the Ticats in scoring position. Hamilton elected to go for it after facing a third down on the drive, and Masoli pitched the ball to running back Mercer Timmis on the option play to set the offence up at the goal line.

Timmis finished off the drive on the very next play, barrelling his way into the end zone for the one-yard touchdown run. Kicker Lirim Hajhrullahu knocked the extra point through to give Hamilton the 14-7 lead.

Aside from the early touchdown strike to Williams, Reilly was largely held in check by the Ticats’ defence early on. Edmonton managed to add a single near the start of the second quarter, but Hamilton’s offence quickly took advantage of the opportunity provided by their defence’s strong start.

Masoli continued to get in a passing rhythm against the Esks’ secondary, and he led his team down the field once again with impressive efficiency. Masoli threw solid strikes to Banks and Toliver to move the chains before finishing the drive with a 45-yard touchdown connection to Tasker. The 27-year-old receiver found running room up the left side of the field as he racked up 37 yards after the catch, and Banks contributed a key block to secure the score and help give Hamilton a 13-point lead.

The Ticats would add a 44-yard field goal from Hajhrullahu on their next drive to extend their lead again, but Reilly and the Esks’ offence began to get things moving after that. Reilly showed once again how dangerous he can be with the deep ball, as he threw an impressive 55-yard bomb to receiver Kenny Stafford to put Edmonton in scoring position.

Reilly then found playmaker Derel Walker for a five-yard touchdown strike, giving Walker his second touchdown catch of the season. The Esks went for the two-point convert on the ensuing play, but running back C.J. Gable was stopped at the goal line, making the score 24-14 at the half.

Both quarterbacks finished the opening half with over 200 yards and two scores through the air.

Hamilton maintained momentum to start the third quarter, and Masoli showed no signs of slowing down. Stepping up and finding a way to make big throws under pressure, Masoli connected with multiple receivers on the drive before capping it off with a beautiful 18-yard touchdown pass to Banks. Masoli threw the passing score after somehow managing to juke away from an Edmonton pass rusher at the last second, giving Hamilton a 31-14 lead after the extra point from Hajhrullahu.

But the Eskimos found a momentum spark of their own shortly after when linebacker Blair Smith picked off a Masoli throw, giving the Esks some life in the fourth quarter.

Edmonton began to mount a late comeback after Hamilton defensive back Jumal Rolle was called for defensive pass interference while covering Stafford down the field. Reilly capitalized on the field position with a one-yard rushing touchdown, making it a 10-point game with under five minutes to play.

It was Timmis who had the final say in this one, however, as the running back accelerated into open field for a 44-yard touchdown gallop, sealing the 38-21 Hamilton victory. An interception from Hamilton’s Richard Leonard ended the Eskimos’ final attempt to stage a comeback.

The Eskimos will look to get back on track when they host the BC Lions next Friday, while The Ticats will be at home against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next Saturday in Week 3 action.

Calgary Stampeders (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Calgary -3 ½
Total: 52 ½

Game Overview

Calgary needed all four quarters to get past Hamilton last Saturday in a game that was closer than the final score might indicate. Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 297 total yards with 200 coming in the first half. It was the Stampeders’ ground game that helped generate 19 points in the fourth quarter. Don Jackson and Terry Williams rushed for a combined 117 yards and a score on 18 rushing attempts overall. Calgary did get a solid effort from its defense when it needed it the most.

The Argonauts scored a grand total of five points in the first three quarters of last week’s loss before posting 14 points in the fourth quarter to keep things interesting. Ricky Ray did not have his best night throwing the ball against Saskatchewan, especially in the first half when Toronto was held to 71 yards through the air. He ended the game with 232 yards passing with no touchdown throws against one interception.

PREVIEW

STAMPS, ARGOS SET FOR GREY CUP REMATCH

The last time that the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts met was in Ottawa on Nov. 26, 2017.

The game ended with the Argos hoisting the Grey Cup in triumph, while the disappointed Stamps watched from the sidelines for a second straight year.

The feeling of defeat still lingers in the minds of the Stamps, but the team is looking forward instead of dwelling on the past.

“Even if they lose, they still have the ring from last year,” DaVaris Daniels told Stampeders.com. “It’s really not about that. It’s about this year and getting better.”

The Stamps do have an early leg up on the Argos this year with a win in their season-opener. A late fourth quarter surge from Calgary saw the team score two majors in the final 15 minutes en route to a 28-14 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was 17-for-36 passing for 297 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Rene Paredes was perfect on four field goal attempts.

“When you settle for field goals you get a little nervous,” Head Coach Dave Dickenson said after the game. “You really do, because you’re missing opportunities to really put a gap between you and the opponent. They came back on us but it was a grind. Credit to our team to step up and make the plays when they had to.”

The Stamps are looking to carry that momentum into Saturday nights matchup and become the only team in the CFL to start the season 2-0. But Calgary knows that it will be no easy feat against a tough Argos team that is looking for its first win of the season.

The Stamps will be without one of their top receivers in Marken Michel, who has been placed on the one-game injured list.

Calgary’s offence knows it has a tough task ahead.

“They have a really good defensive backfield,” said Stamps receiver Kamar Jorden. “They have a lot of vets, a lot of guys who really know how to play their matchups. But I’m confident in our group of guys that we can go out there and make plays and do the things that we usually do in Toronto.”

The Argos are coming off of a 27-19 loss at the hands of the Saskatchewan Roughriders to open their season. Toronto had a tough time putting points up on the board for most of the evening, while the offensive line struggled to hold off a tenacious Riders defence. Argos pivot Ricky Ray was sacked three times in the first half alone by Charleston Hughes.

The Boatmen found their stride in the fourth quarter, finding the end zone twice, but it was too little too late for the Double Blue.

Ray completed 22 of 37 attempts for 233 yards with no touchdown passes and one interception.

“Offensively, it just took us a while to get into any type of rhythm,” Ray told Argonauts.ca after the loss. “We fought hard. As bad as we played in the first three quarters it seemed like, when you protect the football, you’re still going to be in the game…Guys played hard, but we just didn’t do enough.”

Veteran defensive back Abdul Kanneh will make his Double Blue debut this week against the Stamps. The 27-year-old was a key part of the Ottawa REDBLACKS 2016 Grey Cup season. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats signed the coveted free agent the following year, but injuries plagued his time with the Black and Gold. The two-time CFL East All-Star was traded to the Argos earlier this month.

A fresh start in the six may just be what Kanneh needs to re-establish himself as a top CFL defensive back.

“I’m definitely excited,” said Kanneh. “That’s what I came over here to do. To make sure I can help the team make plays and just do what I know I can do.”

The Argos are more than aware of the Stampeders lethal offence led by Mitchell, but say that they are up to the challenge.

“They’re always a great team to compete with,” said Argos defensive back T.J. Heath. “They always come in with everything correct. They have a great receiving core. Bo Levi Mitchell is a great quarterback. Their defence has been good for a while.

“We’ve got a task, but we’re ready to compete.”

Crunchin’ Numbers’

4 – Defensive tackles needed by Stamps linebacker Alex Singleton to reach 200 in his career. Singleton tied for a game-high eight tackles last week.

5 – Straight games that the Stamps have won in Toronto. Calgary has not lost to Toronto on the road since July 7, 2012.

6 – The number of times the Stampeders made it into the red zone last week. However, they only cashed in on one opportunity, managing just one major.

218 – Career starts for Ricky Ray heading into Saturday night’s matchup against the Stamps.

While the Argos won the most important game of the season last year over the Stampeders, they are still trying to solve their regular season woes against one of the top teams in the West. The Stamps have been victorious in their last eight regular season games against the Boatmen.

The good news for Toronto? History is on their side. They have not started a season 0-2 since way back in 2002.

A pivotal matchup in this game to keep an eye out for is last year’s CFL rookie of the year, James Wilder Jr., up against the defensive player of the year in Alex Singleton.

Will the Stamps get some redemption against the Argos? Or will the Double Blue pick up their first win of the season at BMO?

Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+.

GAME RECAP

MITCHELL LEADS STAMPS PAST ARGOS IN GREY CUP REMATCH

TORONTO — Bo Levi Mitchell and the Calgary Stampeders put together a solid performance in their Grey Cup rematch against the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night, as the quarterback threw for an impressive 324 yards and three touchdowns to spoil the Argos’ home opener with a 41-7 victory.

Receiver Eric Rogers led the way for Calgary with five catches for 131 yards and two scores, while running back Don Jackson added balance to the offence with 123 rushing yards on just nine carries.

Toronto was without Ricky Ray for much of the second half after the quarterback left with an injury in the third quarter, and Calgary’s defence found a way to contain the Argos’ offence all game long.

The Stampeders got the ball first on offence and came out looking strong right away, going 46 yards in nine plays to open the scoring. Jackson sliced through the Argos’ defence for a nine-yard gain before Mitchell found receiver Juwan Brescacin to set up a 42-yard field goal from Rene Paredes.

The Stamps’ defence quickly got the ball back, and Mitchell continued right where he left off, engineering an impressive 70-yard drive in just two plays. Receiver Reggie Begelton made one of the most impressive catches of the evening, stretching out to make a diving 31-yard catch, and Mitchell finished off the drive by finding receiver DaVaris Daniels in one-on-one coverage for a 39-yard touchdown. Paredes added the extra point to give Calgary a 10-0 lead.

Calgary’s defence stifled every attempt the Argos made to get rolling early on, preventing Ray from finding any space or time to make a throw. Toronto’s defence also faced difficulty of their own when defensive back Matt Black left the game in the first quarter with an injury.

The Stamps’ momentum was briefly stopped near the end of the first quarter when Argos defensive lineman Frank Beltre stripped the ball from Mitchell. The Calgary quarterback attempted to evade pressure and gain yardage on the ground when the ball was knocked loose, and defensive back Ronnie Yell quickly scooped up the ball and took off into open field for a 77-yard return. Receiver Kamar Jorden gave everything he had to catch up to Yell and drag him down before he could score.

Calgary’s defence stepped up and prevented Toronto from capitalizing on the turnover, and the Argos’ walked away without a point after their field goal attempt was stymied due to a mishandled snap.

Calgary kept things going on offence upon getting the ball back, and Mitchell continued to connect with his receivers every time he dropped back to pass. The veteran passer once again had no problem picking up big chunks of yardage through the air, finding Rogers for a 38-yard gain and an 18-yard touchdown strike to help Calgary grab a 17-0 lead.

The Argos appeared to be getting things going on offence when running James Wilder Jr. fought his way for a tough 14-yard gain, but the Stamps’ defensive front stood strong to stall the Toronto drive. After knocking on the doorstep for the second time in the half, the Argos’ offence couldn’t find an answer, and a 28-yard field goal attempt from Ronnie Pfeffer went wide and out of bounds to give the Double Blue a single point.

Calgary extended their lead again near the end of the half when Mitchell led a 65-yard drive that put Paredes in position for an 18-yard field goal, giving Calgary a 20-1 lead heading into the third quarter.

The start of the second half saw Calgary’s passing attack continue to roll, and Mitchell quickly put together another long scoring drive by taking the Stamps’ offence 61 yards down the field in just four plays. Rogers came up big once again on the drive, reeling in a 59-yard pass down the left side of the field. The 27-year-old receiver extended up as far as he could to catch the ball at its highest point, and he found the end zone just two plays later with a 10-yard touchdown grab.

Calgary continued to make things happen after getting the ball back on their next drive, and Jackson broke free for his longest run of the night, a 70-yard gallop into the open field that put Calgary back in scoring position. Quarterback Nick Arbuckle finished off the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak for the score, helping Calgary take a 34-1 lead.

Toronto was dealt a major injury blow near the end of the third quarter when Ray was forced from the game with an injury. The veteran passer took a hit took a hit from defensive lineman Cordarro Law while being sacked by defensive lineman Ja’Gared Davis, and he had to be carted off the field on a stretcher. James Franklin took over under centre for the remainder of the game.

Calgary’s special teams briefly stole the show when Terry Williams took a punt and returned it an incredible 102 yards for the touchdown. Paredes added the extra point to extend the Stamps’ lead to 40 points entering the fourth quarter.

Franklin led the Argos to their first touchdown drive after that, capping off a 66-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run that injected energy into the home crowd, but it was too little too late as Calgary secured their second win of the season.

Week 3 will see the Stamps host the REDBLACKS on Thursday night, while the Argos will be off until they host the Eskimos in Week 4.

CFL Betting Recap - Week 2
June 25, 2018

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 3-1 SU in Week 2
-- Favorites went 3-1 ATS in Week 2
-- Road teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 2
-- Road teams posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 2
-- The 'Over' went 3-1 in Week 2

Analysis

It was an impressive opening performance for Ottawa (1-0), as they humbled Saskatchewan (1-1) by a 40-17 score to easily cover a 2 1/2-point spread. The Roughriders were unable to duplicate their performance from Week 1 when they used defense to get by Toronto (0-2). Oddly enough, the 40-point outpouring of offense was just the third-highest mark on the board in Week 2.

The defending champion Argonauts are digging themselves quite the early hole, as they fell 41-7 to Calgary (2-0). The Stampeders look like they're on a mission early on, going 2-0 ATS while hitting the 'under' in each of their first two thanks to impressive defense. The Stamps are allowing just 10.5 points per game (PPG) through the first two outings. They'll be tested mightily in Week 3 when they host the RedBlacks.

While the side show of QB Johnny Manziel is the first thing reported on about Hamilton (1-1), QB Jeremiah Masoli and the offense should be the talk. They hung a 38-spot on Edmonton (1-1) in Northern Alberta for an impressive road win and cover. The Esks have stumbled out of the chute with an 0-2 ATS mark, and defense is the reason. They are allowing a dismal 34.0 PPG through two games. As such, the 'over' has hit in each of the outings.

The 'over' is popular out west, going 2-0 for the Stamps, the Esks and for Winnipeg (1-1). The Blue Bombers routed Montreal (0-2) in Week 2. The Alouettes slipped to 0-2 ATS, too, and they're averaging a dismal 10.0 PPG through the first two outings.

Team Betting Notes and A Look Ahead

-- The RedBlacks travel to meet the Stampeders on Thursday in Week 3, looking to improve their 6-0 ATS mark in the month of June. They're also an impressive 20-6 ATS in their past 26 on the road, while going 15-7 ATS in their past 22 overall. Week 3 has been a bugaboo for Ottawa, as they're 0-4 ATS in the past four during the week.

-- The Stamps love Thursdays, going 5-1 ATS in their past six on Thursday, and 5-1 ATS in their past six in Week 3. However, Calgary is 0-5 ATS in the past five against winning teams.

-- The Blue Bombers and Ti-Cats square off on Friday at Tim Horton's in Hamilton. Winnipeg has posted an 8-0 ATS mark in the past eight following a non-cover, and they're an impressive 21-8 ATS in their past 29 games away from home.

-- The Ti-Cats have managed a 3-10-2 ATS mark over the past 15 at home, and they're just 3-7 ATS in the past 10 games in the month of June. The under is an impressive 19-6 in the past 25 games in June, while going an amazing 37-14 in the past 51 at home.

-- In the past five meetings between Winnipeg and Hamilton, the 'under' is a perfect 5-0. The under is also 19-7 in the past 26 battles between the two sides in Hamilton.

-- BC Lions (1-0) is back in action in Week 3 after a bye. They travel to meet the Eskimos. The Lions have posted a 1-5 ATS mark in the past six on the road, and 2-9-1 ATS in the past 12 games inside the West Division. Edmonton has managed a 5-1 ATS mark in the past six against the West, but they're just 1-5 ATS in the past six in June and 2-5 ATS in their past seven at home. BC is 1-4 ATS in their past five tangles with Edmonton.

-- The Alouettes are hoping to find some offense on the prairie, but the Roughriders won't make it easy on them. Montreal is a horrendous 0-11 ATS in their past 11 following a straight-up loss, and they're just 3-14 ATS in the past 17 overall. They're also 0-7 ATS in the past seven on the road. The 'under' is an impressive 23-3 in the past 26 for the Alouettes in June, and 11-2 in their past 13 played on a Saturday.

-- Saskatchewan is 7-1 ATS in their past eight following a straight-up loss, and they're 7-3 ATS in their past 10 against teams with a losing overall mark. In the month of June the Riders are 8-3 ATS in the past 11. The under is 6-1 in Saskatchewan's past seven overall, and 4-1 in their past five at home. In this series, the under is 4-0 in the past four meetings, and 4-1 in the past five in Regina.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 3
June 25, 2018

Week 2 Betting Recap

The favorites went 3-1 both straight-up and against the spread in Week 2 starting with Ottawa’s 40-17 romp over Saskatchewan on Thursday night as a slight two-point favorite at home. In the first of two Friday games, Winnipeg ran all over Montreal 56-10 as a three-point road favorite. Later that night, Hamilton pulled off the only upset of the week with a stunning 38-21 victory against Edmonton as a 6 ½-point road underdog.

Calgary closed out the second week of the CFL regular season with a 41-7 road victory against Toronto as a four-point favorite to successfully avenge last season’s loss to the Argonauts in the Grey Cup title game.

Thursday, June 28

Ottawa RedBlacks (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -7 ½
Total: 57 ½

Game Overview

Ottawa looked pretty sharp in its season opener last Thursday behind Trevor Harris at quarterback. He suffered a lower body injury in the preseason, but that did not appear to be an issue against Saskatchewan. He completed 26 of his 36 passing attempts (72.2 percent) for 345 yards and two touchdowns, while spreading the ball around to seven different players. Greg Ellington led the way with eight receptions for 104 yards. William Powell did a good job running the ball with 94 yards and a score on 19 rushing attempts.

The Stampeders needed a fourth-quarter rally to get past Hamilton in their season opener, but they played much closer to form for all four quarters in Saturday’s romp over Toronto. Calgary built a 20-1 lead at the half against the Argonauts and never took its foot off the gas. Bo Levi Mitchell put the ball up 22 times in that game and he completed 20 of those passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns. The Stampeders also racked up 205 yards on the ground led by running back Don Jackson’s 123 yards rushing on nine carries.

Betting Trends

-- Ottawa has covered ATS in the last three meetings overall and the total has gone OVER in the last four meetings in Calgary.

Friday, June 29

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Hamilton -4 ½
Total: 54 ½

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers posted their first win of the season in impressive fashion by blowing the doors off of Montreal. Matt Nichols will not be back in the lineup at quarterback until later in July due to a knee injury. However, that may not matter given how well Chris Streveler has played in his place. After almost leading his team to an upset against Edmonton in Week 1, he completed 22-of-28 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns in the romp over the Alouettes. Bryan Bennett completed three of the four passes he threw and Darvin Adams went one for one to add another 26 yards to Winnipeg’s 343 total passing yards.

There is no quarterback controversy in Hamilton given the play of Jeremiah Masoli in his first two starts. After playing well in a season-opening loss to Calgary, he took things up a notch against Edmonton with 332 yards passing and three touchdown throws. He has the second-most passing yards in the CFL with 676 and he is completing 67.7 percent of his throws. Mercer Timmis also had a big night running the ball against the Eskimos with 133 yards and two scores on 17 carries.

Betting Trends

-- The road team has gone 7-2 both SU and ATS in the last nine meetings and the total has stayed UNDER the closing line in seven of those nine games.

British Columbia Lions (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -6 ½
Total: 54 ½

Game Overview

The Lions are coming off a bye after beating Montreal 22-10 in Week 1 as 8 ½-point home favorites. The total stayed UNDER 49 points in that win. Quarterback Jonathon Jennings got the new season off to a good start with 183 yards passing and two touchdown throws while completing an efficient 20 of 24 passing attempts to seven different players. He also led BC in rushing with 57 yards on nine carries.

Edmonton squeezed past Winnipeg on a last-second field goal in its season opener on the road before coming up flat in last week’s loss to Hamilton in its season debut at home. Eskimos’ quarterback Mike Reilly led the CFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns last season and he has already thrown for a league-high 694 yards in his first two games this year. Against Hamilton last Friday night, he completed 20 of his 30 passing attempts for 286 yards and two scores against one interception in the losing cause.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has won six of the last seven meetings SU and it has covered the spread in the last three games. The total has gone OVER in three of the last four meetings in Edmonton.

Saturday, June 30

Montreal Alouettes (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -10
Total: 45 ½

Game Overview

Montreal has been outscored a combined 78-20 in its first two games to continue last season’s dismal play that resulted in just three SU wins. Drew Willy was under center for most of the game against Winnipeg last week and he threw for 111 yards and one score on 16 completions. Tyrell Sutton ran the ball four times for 53 yards to help spark the Alouettes’ running game, but when you cannot get the ball into the end zone, you are not going to win all that many games in this league.

The big question mark for the Roughriders in this Saturday’s game is the playing status of quarterback Zach Collaros. He was knocked out of the game against Ottawa in the second quarter and he remains listed as questionable on the latest injury report. Brandon Bridge took his place and threw for 145 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Tre Mason led the team in rushing against the RedBlacks with 33 yards on seven carries.

Betting Trends

-- Montreal has covered ATS in five of its last seven road games against the Roughriders and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings in Saskatchewan.

PREVIEW

STAMPS HOST REDBLACKS ON THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

CALGARY — McMahon Stadium is a place of polar opposites for the Ottawa REDBLACKS and Calgary Stampeders.

For Rick Campbell’s REDBLACKS, it’s a place that has not been kind. An 0-4 record, with minimum 38 points against on every trip, signals a block for Ottawa at Calgary’s home field.

On the flip side of this week’s Thursday Night Football matchup, the Stampeders are 17-2 at home dating back to 2016 and have looked largely unbeatable since.

CFL.ca has unprecedented coverage of Thursday Night Football presented by the Brick, including a 30-minute live show CFL Game Time at 8:00 p.m. ET, as the REDBLACKS visit the Stamps in Calgary.

Campbell and co., however, are not deterred ahead of their trip to Calgary.

“It can be tricky (the travel),” Campbell told OttawaREDBLACKS.com. “We’re going to treat it like a home game from the standpoint we got all our work done (at home) — flying in in the afternoon, (so) eating and sleeping schedules won’t be disrupted too much.”

The REDBLACKS looked strong in their season opener, a 40-17 win over Saskatchewan, last week; as per usual, Campbell did not get overly excited following an early-season victory.

“Every win is big, they’re very hard to get,” said the fifth-year head coach. “But we won a home game in June, and I hope our sights are bigger than that — we respect winning, but it’s a long road ahead (with) 17 more games. You really need to reload.”

Ottawa faces a monumental challenge entering McMahon Stadium on Thursday night — of that there is little doubt — but Campbell believes his charges are up to the task.

“They have a lot of good players, (and) they’re well-coached,” said Campbell. “They have a ton of continuity between their players and coaches, so they know what they’re doing around there. We have the ultimate respect for them.”

To put it lightly, none of Ottawa’s four trips to Cowtown have gone well — think losses of 38-17 (Aug. 9, 2014), 48-3 (Aug. 15, 2015), 48-23 (Sep. 17, 2016) and 43-39 (June 29, 2017).

REDBLACKS defensive end Avery Ellis believes discipline will be key against a deep, versatile Calgary offence.

“Our biggest thing is (being) consistent, bringing it from Week 2 through 18,” said Ellis. “Calgary’s really dynamic, they do a lot of different things very well. As long as we stay disciplined, we’ll tame them to the best of our ability.”

One thing is almost certain for the REDBLACKS: If Diontae Spencer goes off — on offence or in the return game — they’re going to have a good day.

The New Iberia, La. native has showcased elite speed in both phases, and appears poised to built on last season’s 922-yard performance.

“I would give us a B-plus,” said Spencer of Ottawa’s Week 2 win. “There were a lot of things we could’ve done better, but we got the win. We’re practicing to correct those things.”

A winning mentality — something that has perhaps deserted the REDBLACKS late in games in recent seasons — was key to closing out the Riders on home turf.

“At half-time, the mindset was just ‘let’s put these guys away’,” continued Spencer. “We knew they’d come back swinging, and we didn’t want to let them back into the game. ‘Let’s finish strong and put them away’, and that’s what we did.”

On roster front, the REDBLACKS made pair of changes: two rookies in Reggie Daniels (cornerback) and George Uko (D-tackle) slot in, while receiver Noel Thomas Jr. and linebacker Anthony Cioffi both hit the one-game injured list.

Two weeks into the 2018 season, it appears to be business as usual for the Calgary Stampeders.

Bo Levi Mitchell and the cavalry are fresh off an annihilation of the Argonauts in Toronto, and at 2-0 sit in the first-place position they’ve grown accustomed to over the past few seasons.

But this week’s test against the REDBLACKS — a team that’s tied the Stamps early in each of the last two seasons — presents a unique challenge.

“Early in the year, they’re as tough a matchup as anybody,” Calgary head coach Dave Dickenson told Stampeders.com. “They always start out the year super fast because their offence is clicking (and) they’ve been running the same type of stuff for a while. We usually have a tight, tight game and we’re expecting the same tomorrow.”

Veteran national defensive back Adam Berger will start at safety for the Stamps this week in place of the injured Tunde Adeleke.

The 27-year-old Berger spent last season with the REDBLACKS and knows the narrow margin between the two teams from both perspectives.

“It’s unreal — it’s good football to watch, (but) playing it’s a bit stressful,” laughed the Simon Fraser product. “That’s what you want, a high compete level. They’re fun games. It’s what we expect every week (because) this league is filled with good teams.”

Berger was signed to provide veteran depth in the secondary and on special teams, and former teammate Josh Bell was one of his main proponents.

“I’m extremely comfortable with Berger being in playing safety,” said Bell, now Calgary’s defensive backs coach. “He’s made Tunde a whole lot better through training camp, he was my backup for many years and my first request as coach. I truly trust him back there.”

Also drawing out of the lineup is defensive lineman Cordarro Law, while receiver Marken Michel will miss his second straight week of action.

“They were close, but not close enough,” explained Dickenson. “I’m putting the best (roster) together, and if you’re not sure you can make it through a game…the roster’s too small. If you’re battling something, and we’ve got good guys…”

After a shutdown performance in Toronto last weekend, the Stamps’ DB unit is excited about the challenge presented by Ottawa.

“Every time we play those guys they play us tough,” said Ciante Evans. “Defensively, they put a lot of force on us, as far as being a balanced offensive attack. So we really have to be on our P’s and Q’s.

“We’ve got to make life tough on them, get (our) hands on guys. (They’ve got) really good receivers, between 82 and 85, and I know they’re going to come to work tomorrow.”

Calgary’s team chemistry should be boosted by the team’s Week 2 roadtrip — both the victory itself and the bonding time away from home.

“We gained a little camaraderie,” laughed Dickenson. “We stayed in Mississauga. Wasn’t much to do out there, so the guys stuck together.”

Crunchin’ Numbers:

0 – Teams to have won a game after losing the turnover battle. Since 2011, teams with fewer turnovers in a game are 379-78 (.829).

6 – League-high sacks registered by Calgary this season. Even without Law on the line, the quartet of James Vaughters, Derek Wiggan, Micah Johnson and JaGared Davis is downright terrifying.

7 – Wins for Trevor Harris in his last eight starts. The Ottawa QB threw for 345 yards and a pair of touchdowns in last week’s win.

203 – Rush yards for Calgary’s Don Jackson through two weeks — the most in the CFL. Keep in mind that RB-2 option Terry Williams has also run for 103 yards.

Every CFL.ca writer and nearly 90 per cent of the voting public is picking the Stamps, but if recent history is any indication, this week’s edition of Thursday Night Football will be a lot tighter than most anticipate.

These are two teams who’ve shared the spoils in two games over the past two years, and the memories of that chilly night in Toronto at the 105th Grey Cup still loom large for some.

For Calgary, it’s a question of who will step up; Dave Dickenson’s team has an embarrassment of riches on offence, but is dealing with injuries on defence. Will Don Jackson or Terry Williams get the majority of touches? How will Lemar Durant factor in his return?

In Ottawa, expectations are inflated after a promising home win against the Riders. Can Trevor Harris finally establish himself as elite? Will Diontae Spencer become the pre-eminent receiver in the East?

Questions, questions and more questions.

Strap on your boots, because this promises to be one heck of a matchup.

Kickoff is at 9:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+.
