Top 25 Capsules
January 28, 2017

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Frank Mason III scored 21 points, Josh Jackson had 20 points and a pair of big 3-pointers, and No. 2 Kansas rallied past No. 4 Kentucky 79-73 on Saturday night in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge.

The Challenge's marquee matchup between college basketball's two winningest programs ended with the Jayhawks earning their second straight win over the Wildcats on Kentucky's home floor. Three-point shooting was critical for Kansas (19-2) as it shook off an 0-for-8 first half to make 5 of 11 after halftime, with Jackson's consecutive 3s starting things for the Jayhawks. They shot 59 percent in the second half.

Malik Monk and Derek Willis each had 18 points for Kentucky (17-4), which dropped its second straight.

---

No. 3 GONZAGA 96, PEPPERDINE 49

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Przemek Karnowski scored 16 points and Silas Melson had 15, helping Gonzaga easily roll past Pepperdine.

The Bulldogs are the last unbeaten team in the country and could lead the AP Top 25 for only the second time in their history after both No. 1 Villanova and No. 2 Kansas lost this week.

Gonzaga (22-0, 10-0 West Coast Conference) has matched its longest ever winning streak at 22 games.

The Bulldogs shot 58.6 percent and held the Waves to 30.2 percent shooting. They took immediate command over outmanned Pepperdine (6-16, 2-8), using a superior height advantage to jump out to a 27-8 lead.

---

SYRACUSE 82, No. 6 FLORIDA STATE 72

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Andrew White scored 24 points, John Gillon had 21 points and matched his career high with 11 assists, and Syracuse earned its first victory over a ranked team.

Tyler Lydon had 14 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high six blocks for the Orange (13-9, 5-4 Atlantic Coast Conference), who led 44-26 at halftime. Tyler Roberson added 10 points and seven boards.

Dwayne Bacon and Jonathan Isaac each had 19 points for Florida State (18-4, 6-3), and Xavier Rathan-Mayes finished with 16. Isaac also grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked two shots.

---

No. 5 BAYLOR 78, MISSISSIPPI 75

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Manu Lecomte scored 17 points, leading Baylor to the win in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge.

Baylor (20-1) rallied from a 15-point deficit in the first half to win its fifth straight game. The Bears trailed 50-40 early in the second half, but pushed ahead to take their first lead at 56-54 with 10:25 left after Johnathan Motley made a pair of free throws.

It was a close game from that point forward. Lecomte hit a decisive 3-pointer with 23 seconds left that made it 78-72 and sent many of the Ole Miss fans to the exits.

Sebastian Saiz and freshman Breein Tyree scored 20 points apiece for Ole Miss (12-9).

---

MIAMI 77, No. 9 NORTH CAROLINA 62

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Freshman Bruce Brown scored a career-high 30 points, and Miami snapped North Carolina's seven-game win streak.

The Hurricanes (14-6, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) had success with a swarming zone defense. The Tar Heels' point total was a season low and 27 below their average, and they shot only 35 percent.

Miami also had a 41-36 edge in rebounding against the Tar Heels (19-4, 7-2), who lead the nation in that category.

Ja'Quan Newton added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Hurricanes, whose biggest lead was 55-33.

Justin Jackson led North Carolina with 21 points. Joel Berry II went 0 for 8 and scored two points, 13 below his average.

---

COLORADO 74, No. 10 OREGON 65

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Derrick White scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half, keying Colorado's upset of Oregon that snapped the Ducks' 17-game winning streak.

Xavier Johnson added 13 points as the Buffaloes (12-10, 2-7 Pac-12) kept the Ducks winless in seven trips all-time in Boulder.

Payton Pritchard's 19 points led the Ducks (19-3, 8-1), who lost for the first time since Nov. 21 against Georgetown.

White had a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half that put the Buffaloes ahead 45-39 while Colorado's stifling defense was keeping the Ducks out of rhythm at the other end of the court. And he had a 3-pointer, a three-point play and two free throws in an 11-1 run that gave Colorado a 64-52 lead.

---

GEORGETOWN 85, No. 11 BUTLER 81

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -L.J. Peak scored 22 points and Jessie Govan beat the shot clock with a key 3-pointer with 1:03 left, helping Georgetown to the win.

Govan and Rodney Pryor each finished with 20 points as the Hoyas (12-10, 3-6 Big East) stopped the Bulldogs' 14-game home winning streak with their second straight victory against a ranked opponent. They were coming off a 71-51 win against No. 16 Creighton on Wednesday.

Kelan Martin scored 22 points for Butler (18-4, 7-3), which lost for the first time in five games. Andrew Chrabascz had 16 points.

---

GEORGIA TECH 62, No. 14 NOTRE DAME 60

ATLANTA (AP) - Josh Okogie made a fast-break layup as time expired, Tadric Jackson had a career-high 25 points and Georgia Tech earned another surprising victory over a ranked opponent.

The inexperienced Yellow Jackets (13-8, 5-4 Atlantic Coast Conference), in their first year under coach Josh Pastner, already had two wins over top-10 opponents before taking down the Fighting Irish (17-5, 6-3).

Notre Dame's Matt Farrell went up for a short jumper but missed off the rim with 7 seconds remaining. Jackson grabbed the rebound, tossed the ball to a streaking Okogie, and McCamish Pavilion erupted in cheers.

Ben Lammers, the only player on either team to play the entire game, had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Georgia Tech.

V.J. Beachem scored 23 points for the Irish, and Bonzie Colson had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

---

No. 15 WISCONSIN 61, RUTGERS 54

NEW YORK (AP) - Ethan Happ scored seven of his career-high 32 points in overtime, helping Wisconsin get the win at Madison Square Garden.

Happ was 12 for 18 from the field. He was the only player for Wisconsin (18-3, 7-1 Big Ten) to shoot above 50 percent; the Badgers shot 33.3 percent (20 for 60) from the field, including a 3-for-25 performance from 3-point range.

Corey Sanders had 15 points for the Scarlet Knights (12-10, 1-8), who lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

Rutgers finished with a 44-41 rebound advantage, but the Scarlet Knights committed 19 turnovers that turned into 17 points for the Badgers.

---

No. 16 CREIGHTON 83, DEPAUL 66

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Khyri Thomas scored 18 points and Marcus Foster had 15, leading Creighton to the win at home.

Billy Garrett Jr. scored 18 points and Brandon Cyrus had 12 for the Blue Demons (8-13, 1-7).

Creighton has won 10 of its last 11 meetings with DePaul, including eight of nine since joining the Big East in 2013.

---

No. 17 DUKE 85, WAKE FOREST 83

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Luke Kennard hit a 3-pointer with 6.6 seconds left, helping Duke rally for the road win.

Kennard finished with 34 points - one shy of his career high - and Grayson Allen had 19 for the Blue Devils (16-5, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference). Kennard was 6 for 6 from 3-point range and Allen went 5 for 11 from beyond the arc.

Duke appeared to be headed for its fourth loss in five games before Kennard took over in the second half. He scored 12 of Duke's final 15 points.

Bryant Crawford scored a career-high 26 points, John Collins added 20 and Keyshawn Woods finished with 15 for Wake Forest (12-9, 3-6).

---

No. 18 WEST VIRGINIA 81, TEXAS A&M 77

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Jevon Carter had 19 points and nine rebounds, helping West Virginia hold on for the win.

West Virginia opened a 51-31 lead on Daxter Miles Jr.'s 3-pointer early in the second half. But the Mountaineers needed two free throws by Esa Ahmad with 4.4 seconds left to finish off the Aggies.

Ahmad went 6 for 12 at the line and finished with 14 points. Miles scored 10 points for West Virginia (17-4), which was coming off an 85-69 win against No. 2 Kansas on Tuesday.

Carter made four 3-pointers and also had two steals in 34 minutes.

---

No. 21 SAINT MARY'S 72, SANTA CLARA 59

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Jock Landale had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Saint Mary's held off a late charge by Santa Clara.

The Gaels (19-2, 9-1 West Coast Conference) won their fourth straight game and beat Santa Clara for the 14th time in their past 16 meetings.

Emmett Naar added 15 points and nine assists for Saint Mary's, which led 53-37 with 10 minutes left before the Broncos rallied within 55-50 with six minutes remaining. The Gaels made 11 of 12 free throws in the final five minutes to secure the victory.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Justin Jackson had a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds, making all five of his 3-point attempts, and Maryland earned its sixth straight win.

Akeem Springs led the Gophers (15-7, 3-6) with a season-high 23 points, but they lost their fifth consecutive game despite a 41-31 rebound advantage and a 21-10 assist-to-turnover ratio.

---

No. 23 SOUTH CAROLINA 63, MISSOURI 53

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Sindarius Thornwell had 16 points and 11 rebounds and South Carolina beat Missouri.

Sunday’s six-pack

— Jay Cutler threw a football 65 yards in the air during a Bears’ game this season, the longest any NFL pass was in the air in 2016.

— Pro wrestler Roman Reigns was a 3-year starter on the defensive line at Georgia Tech.

— VCU’s basketball team has sold out its last 94 home games.

— Since 2000, Patriots have drafted 78 players who were selected with picks acquired in a trade, by far the most in the NFL during that time.

— Memphis Grizzlies PG Mike Conley is the highest-paid player in the NBA this season, but has never appeared in an NBA All-Star Game.

— Golf is weird; other players do a commercial promoting Eldrick Woods’ return. They know their sport was way more lucrative when Woods was a force, but those days are gone.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday…….

13) Kansas 79, Kentucky 73— Michael Buffer announced the starting lineups, but Jayhawks KO’d the home team, handing Kentucky its second loss in a row.

12) Miami 77, North Carolina 62— Tar Heels jumped out to an 11-2 lead, then got their butts kicked by a Miami team that had been struggling the last couple of weeks. Playing Thursday, then again at 1pm on Saturday is an issue for college teams.

11) Duke 85, Wake Forest 83— Kennard scored 34 points, 30 in the second half, as Duke tore the Demon Deacons’ hearts out with a late comeback. Before scoring the GW basket, Duke’s last lead was 18-17- Wake Forest led by 10 at the half.

Danny Manning has his work cut out for him, pasting back together his team’s psyche; this was the first home sellout in eight years for Wake Forest- they went all-in and then had the game taken away from them. Curious to see how a young team responds to that.

10) Georgia Tech 62, Notre Dame 60— Yellow Jackets are 5-4 in ACC; they were picked to finish last by EVERYBODY. Assistant coach Eric Reveno has worked wonders with Lammers, the big kid inside— he’s been a force for Tech.

9) Wisconsin 61, Rutgers 54 OT— Scarlet Knights led by 9 with 3:15 left at Madison Square Garden, had an upset in their reach, but let it slip away.

8) San Diego 68, Portland 50— Cameron Neubauer is a sturdy forward for the Toreros, a very effective player— his grandfather Bob Fry was an offensive lineman in the NFL for 10 years, with the Rams/Cowboys, after he played for Bear Bryant at Kentucky.

San Diego is a well-coached team that needs another player or two so it has enough depth to compete with the big boys in the WCC.

7) Warriors 144, Clippers 98— Not exactly what ESPN had in mind for Saturday night entertainment. Who would watch this?

6) Upsets of the Day:
— UTEP (+15.5) 91, Marshall 68— Miners scored 91 points despite going 1-9 on the arc; Tim Floyd was an NBA coach- he’s very good. UTEP won four of its last five games after a rough start to the season.
— Georgetown (+11.5) 85, Butler 81
— Auburn (+9) 88, TCU 80
— Northern Arizona (+9) 68, North Dakota 67

5) Maryland 85, Minnesota 78— Terps are now 11-1 this season in games decided by 8 or less points. Minnesota lost its poise in last couple of minutes; they’ve lost five games in a row after a 15-2 start, with last four losses all by 7 or less points.

4) Wm & Mary 96, NC-Wilmington 78— First CAA loss for the Seahawks, who beat W&M by 24 in their first meeting this season.

3) Cal-Davis 74, Cal-Irvine 65— Home team was 35-46 on the foul line; road team was 11-16. Coach of the road team wasn’t happy. Irvine has a very young team; they’re going to be very good in the Big West next year and the year after.

2) Colorado 74, Oregon 65— Huge win for Buffs, who started season 0-7 in Pac-12 but won couple of home games this week. Loss was first for Oregon since mid-November.

1— Central Michigan 105, Kent State 98 OT— Chippewas are unusual; their two best scorers are both 5-9 guards, so they play fast. CMU was 14-36 on the arc; their two guards combined to score 67 points in a game Kent led by 5 at the half.

Preview: Wolfpack (14-7) at Cardinals (17-4)
Date: January 29, 2017 1:00 PM EDT

Short-handed No. 13 Louisville will be without two guards when it plays red-hot North Carolina State on Sunday at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.

The Wolfpack (14-7, 3-5 ACC) beat No. 17 Duke 84-82 on Monday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

"This game gives us great confidence now," NC State coach Mark Gottfried said. "We have the belief we can do something good."

The win over Duke snapped a string of four losses in the Wolfpack's last five games.

"We're better than what a lot of people think," NC State freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr. said. "A lot of people got down on us with a couple of losses. We never got down on each other, though. We always believed in each other. We believe we can do great things this year."

The Cardinals (17-4, 5-3) will face the Wolfpack without starting point guard Quentin Snider (strained hip flexor) and reserve guard Tony Hicks (broken hand).

"We're going against a team that I don't like going into banged up like we are because they have an explosive one-on-one basketball team, not only in the backcourt but the frontcourt," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said. "But the guys have responded well in practice.

"With Tony, we thought it was a jammed finger at the time, not a broken hand. He was just coming around the last two weeks and now we've already been short-handed in the backcourt and now frontcourt players are going to have to play in the backcourt, so we'll see what happens."

Hicks finished Louisville's win over Pittsburgh before x-rays revealed a broken hand after the game. He'll miss at least four weeks, Pitino said. That leaves the Cardinals with a lineup that includes shooting guard Donovan Mitchell shifting to point guard, freshman wing VJ King playing the two spot and junior Deng Adel at small forward.

"We're going through a tough stretch right now, injury-wise," Pitino said. "It's catching us off-guard and we're a key player out and a key player steps up and then he's out. We're down now four scholarships. We'll be happy when we get some players back"

Last season, Louisville accepted a two-scholarship hit in addition to a postseason ban as self-imposed punishment for a the stripper/prostitution scandal uncovered by a book from former escort Katina Powell. Without those two scholarships and now without Snider and Hicks, the Cardinals are thin. Former walk-on David Levitch and freshman guard Ryan McMahon are expected to have to guard NC State's high-powered guards at some point Sunday.

"Well, David and Ryan are both confident in their abilities, which is a good thing," Pitino deadpanned. "David has always been a confident player; in fact, he told a friend that he's surprised he came back for his senior year and he didn't go to the NBA."

For NC State, coming off the biggest win of the season is a good thing, but Gottfried wants to make sure they don't dwell too much on Monday.

"I thought it was important for our guys to enjoy that for a minute, but then I think quickly you have to get your team and your mindset onto the next game," Gottfried said.

NC State has had trouble winning after beating one of its in-state rivals, Duke or North Carolina. The Wolfpack have only won two of the last 21 games immediately after beating Duke or North Carolina.

"We've got to be able to win two in a row," Gottfried said. "We can't just win one, you've got to go find a way to get another one."

In a quirk of ACC scheduling, Louisville will have played four games in 10 days after Sunday. Pitino said he is counting on Louisville fans, who are planning to wear white, to carry his team.

"Our fans have gotten us over the hump defensively," Pitino said. "They've really been awesome for ACC games. A little lax non-conference, but they've been great with the Kentucky game as well as the ACC and we're gonna need them because we're really short-handed for this game because of a dynamic one-on-one basketball team."

NOTES: Louisville beat NC State 77-72 last January in Raleigh. N.V. ... The Cardinals hold a 10-9 series edge. ... Louisville eliminated NC State from the NCAA Tournament in 2015. The Cardinals won the Sweet 16 game 75-65 in Syracuse, N.Y., before falling to Michigan State in overtime with a trip to the Final Four on the line. ... Louisville and NC State didn't play from 1988 until 2015.

Preview: Cavaliers (16-3) at Wildcats (19-2)
Date: January 29, 2017 1:00 PM EDT

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Top-ranked Villanova suffered a surprising meltdown Monday night in a 74-72 loss at Marquette.

The Wildcats let a 13-point lead with six minutes remaining get away as the Golden Eagles closed the game on a 19-4 run for a stunning two-point victory.

Since Monday, Villanova (19-2, 7-2 Big East) has had time to regroup in preparation for a highly-anticipated matchup against nonconference foe and 12th-ranked Virginia (16-3, 6-2 ACC) Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at the Wells Fargo Center. The game has been announced as a sellout.

Mikal Bridges led the Wildcats with 20 points while Jalen Brunson scored 19 points and preseason Player of the Year candidate Josh Hart had 16 in the loss. Kris Jenkins scored just two points and missed all seven of his shots, including going 0 for 6 from beyond the arc.

Villanova shot 6 of 34 from 3-point territory.

"It was a great college basketball game that we came out on the wrong end of," Villanova coach Jay Wright told reporters. "Marquette deserves the credit. We've got to get back to learn from our mistakes and get back to work."

Hart was in foul trouble much of the first half before coming on late. For the Wildcats to be successful, they need to be aggressive getting to the basket.

"That just shows how much we settled and how we didn't get into the lane and make our teammates better," Hart told the Philadelphia Inquirer, referring to the 34 attempts from beyond the arc. "We've got to keep playing, no matter how much we're up. We had to have a killer mindset, we have to have heart for the full 40 minutes."

Virginia won its 16th game Tuesday night with an impressive 71-54 showing at No. 14 Notre Dame. The Cavaliers have won five in a row, which also includes road wins at Boston College and Clemson. They're 8-1 on the road this season.

Virginia defeated Villanova, 86-75, at home last season on its way to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight for the first time since 1995.

The Wildcats lost to Seton Hall in the Big East tournament title game and responded to win six straight games in the NCAA Tournament for their second national championship in program history.

"It was obviously difficult to watch them play in the championship, but that's how it works," Virginia guard London Perrantes told the Virginia athletic sports website.

Perrantes had flu-like symptoms before the game against Notre Dame but wound up with 22 points. As a result, he moved into 44th place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,027 career points.

Guard Marial Shayok scored at least 10 points in seven of the last eight games while guard Devon Hall achieved double figures in scoring for the seventh time in eight games.

Virginia's next test will be even more challenging against Villanova. It's the third of four home games at the home of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and NHL's Flyers. Villanova previously defeated Marquette and Providence in this arena.

"Every game is a big one for us, Virginia coach Tony Bennett told the Virginia athletic sports website. "Now we get a chance to go against a terrific team in a hostile environment. We'll have to show up and play."

Preview: Huskies (9-11) at Wildcats (19-2)
Date: January 29, 2017 3:30 PM EDT

Arizona coach Sean Miller, in no uncertain terms, believes freshman Lauri Markkanen isn't getting the attention he deserves.

"For him not to be considered one of the best freshmen in college basketball is a complete joke," Miller said. "I mean, I will put him up against anybody -- not just a freshman -- with the quality of player he is. Period. I don't care if you're from Finland, Russia, China, Japan, North Dakota, Florida, California, New York City.

"If you have eyes and you're watching Arizona play, there aren't many players who play the way he plays."

Markkanen, a 7-foot forward from Finland, is averaging a team-high 17.0 points for seventh-ranked Arizona, which will play Washington on Sunday (3:30 p.m. ET, FOX) at McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz.

The Wildcats (19-2, 8-0 Pac-12) will be trying to win their 14th consecutive game.

It will be quite a freshmen showcase, with the struggling Huskies (9-11, 2-6) featuring point guard Markelle Fultz, a potential No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Markkanen's calling card is his uncommon shooting touch, as he leads the conference by hitting 50.5 percent of his 3-point attempts (52 of 103). That is nearly unheard of at any level for a 7-footer. He has drained 20 of 29 3-pointers in the past five games.

Markkanen has a full offensive package, though, able to score in the low post and put the ball on the floor to create his own shot.

"He pretty much takes what the defense gives," Miller said. "I think that also reflects his percentage; he's a smart player, an unselfish player."

Markkanen might be catching some by surprise because he didn't play high school ball in the United States, but everybody saw Fultz coming as a top recruit. Fultz is averaging 23.7 points -- five more than anybody else in the Pac-12 -- and is second in assists with 6.2 per game.

Fultz is also grabbing 6.0 rebounds per game, making him the only player in the country, through Friday's games, averaging at least 20 points, six assists and six rebounds. He is coming of a game in which he had 28 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in an 86-75 loss at Arizona State on Thursday.

"If it were a night where we were just making our shots at a normal rate, he probably would have had 15 or 16 assists," said Washington coach Lorenzo Romar. "But we missed a lot of wide-open shots with him delivering the basketball. He played exceptionally well."

Washington hasn't had enough around him, especially defensively, with shot-blocking center Malik Dime out with a finger injury. The Huskies are allowing opponents to hit 47.0 percent from the field in Pac-12 play.

Arizona, with guard Allonzo Trier back, should take advantage. The sophomore is averaging 14.5 points and 5.5 assists in two games after missing the first 19 due to an NCAA suspension.

"Sometimes, they would have scoring droughts, and I think Allonzo puts an end to all that," Romar said about the difference Trier makes to the Wildcats' lineup. "He's such a gifted scorer. So as good as they are, they're about to get better."

This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. Arizona has won six in a row in the series.

Preview: Bulls (6-13) at Bearcats (18-2)
Date: January 29, 2017 4:00 PM EDT

CINCINNATI -- Coming off an emotional victory over crosstown rival Xavier on Thursday night, No. 19 Cincinnati will be looking to avoid a letdown on Sunday when it hosts undermanned South Florida.

The Bearcats (18-2, 7-0 American Athletic) have won 20 straight games at home and are off to their best start under head coach Mick Cronin. The Bulls (6-13, 0-8), meanwhile, have lost eight straight and are winless in conference play.

Aside from ending a three-game losing streak against its city neighbors on Thursday, the victory over the 24th-ranked Musketeers also was a signature win for Cincinnati, helping to further bolster its NCAA Tournament resume.

The Bearcats can ill-afford to take a step back on Sunday afternoon. That would seem unlikely considering the struggles for South Florida and the overall depth the Bearcats possess.

"We have guys that can make plays," Cronin said. "We different have guys that can hurt you and different guys can carry us at different points in the game."

That was evident on Thursday night when freshman Jarron Cumberland scored 15 points, including several key baskets in the second half to stave off a Xavier comeback.

"(Cumberland) is a great player," said Cronin. "He's a big body. We know that he can score."

Cumberland shoots 36.5 percent from 3-point range while averaging 6.6 points. Jacob Evans leads the Bearcats with 14.5 points per game and Kyle Washington adds 13.3 as part of a balanced attack for Cincinnati, which hasn't lost at Fifth Third Arena since falling to Temple 77-70 on Dec. 29, 2015.

The Bearcats' 11-game winning streak is their longest since the 2013-14 season.

If there's a concern right now for Cincinnati, it's free-throw shooting. The Bearcats shoot just 64.7 percent as a team and went 18 of 37 in the win over Xavier.

While free throws might be the only concern for Cincinnati at this point in the season, South Florida has myriad issues. The Bulls fired head coach Orlando Antigua just 13 games into the season and hired former East Tennessee State coach Murry Bartow as interim coach earlier this month.

South Florida still is looking for its first win under Bartow. The Bulls led in the second half against Connecticut on Wednesday before falling 81-60.

"They are a really resilient group," said Bartow of his team. "They continue to be up and play with energy. They compete, they fight ... we have to just keep plugging away. That's all we can do."

South Florida is led by Geno Thorpe, who averages 13.4 points over 19 games. Jahmal McMurray averages 20.3 points, which would lead the AAC had he not played in only three games.

Facing the Bearcats on the road always is a tall order for the Bulls. Cincinnati leads the series 29-8, including wins in the past six meetings. South Florida hasn't beaten the Bearcats in Cincinnati since 1988.

That said, a letdown for Cincinnati on Sunday seems unlikely.

"This year, our guys have done a great job focusing on our opponent and treating everybody with great respect," Cronin said earlier this season. "I think that is because we have tremendous maturity in the kids on this team."

Preview: Boilermakers (17-4) at Cornhuskers (9-11)
Date: January 29, 2017 4:30 PM EDT

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Keeping Glynn Watson in line is how Purdue hopes to keep its line -- or move up a few -- in the Top 25.

The No. 20 Boilermakers visit Nebraska on Sunday afternoon in a key Big Ten Conference showdown against the Cornhuskers at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Limiting the effectiveness of the Huskers' sophomore guard -- a player who was on the Boilermakers recruiting radar -- is something Purdue coach Matt Painter said is required for his 17-4 team to improve to 7-2 in conference play.

"I think it starts with their lead guards and Watson," Painter told the Lafayette Courier-Journal. "Just trying to keep him contained. He's obviously one of the most improved guys in our league. Just not let him get everything.

"If he's getting transition baskets, if he's hitting his 3s, if he's getting his pull-ups, he's getting to the rim, if he's going to the free throw line; if he's getting everything and getting the ball to other people, now you're in big trouble."

Watson and senior Tai Webster made big strides this season even as the Huskers struggled to a 9-11 record (3-5 Big Ten). Webster averages 18.3 points while Watson checks in a 14.6 with a per outing and a 3-point shooting percentage of 41.

Painter said Nebraska's record can be deceptive. It opened the Big Ten season with road wins at Indiana and Maryland, and defeated Iowa in double overtime before losing their next five games. Two of which -- Ohio State and Rutgers -- came in the final second.

"They obviously started off conference with a couple of big-time wins on the road," Painter said. "They've had some bad breaks in three games that were right there, could have gone either way."

It will be up to the Huskers to slow down Purdue's offense, which has been especially prolific the past three games. In those wins over Illinois, Penn State and Michigan State, the Boilermakers shot 55.3 percent from the field, 46.3 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent from the free throw line.

Some are calling the Purdue offense the best in Painter's 12 seasons leading the program. There are four Boilermakers averaging more than 10 points, led by Caleb Swanigan (18.8). Isaac Haas is at 13.5, Vincent Edwards 11.8 and Carsen Edwards 10.7.

Painter said the Huskers, who lead the Big Ten in steals, are more than capable of pulling the upset.

"They're very athletic," Painter said. "They lead our league in steals. They do a good job of getting in the passing lanes. They do a great job of anticipation and using their speed and quickness on both ends of the court.

"It's going to be important for us to take care of the basketball, but also to contain the dribble. Those guys are good in transition, they're good in ball screen motion."

It all starts with containing Watson.

"Just trying to keep him in front of us, keep him bottled up, and anything he scores make him score over us, be tough," Painter said. "When he gets going he starts to get a little bit of everything."

Down low is where Purdue will have the biggest advantage over the smaller Huskers.

"I like our match-up if we take care of the ball," Painter said. "I think that's going to be an important aspect of the game, for us to be able get the ball inside. Once it does get inside, just make the simple decision."

Preview: Musketeers (14-6) at Red Storm (10-12)
Date: January 29, 2017 6:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- St. John's is looking to get to .500 in the Big East Conference when it hosts No. 24 Xavier Sunday at Madison Square Garden. Xavier (14-6, 4-3 Big East) has won the last three meetings.

The Red Storm (10-12, 4-5) is off to its best record at the midway point of conference play since the 2012-13 season. Coach Chris Mullin's squad recorded an impressive 91-86 win at Providence on Jan. 25 in which freshman Marcus LoVett scored a game-high 26 points on 10 of 15 shooting, while fellow frosh Shamorie Ponds added 22 points, highlighted by a 4-for-5 effort from long distance.

Both LoVett and Ponds have now each scored 20 or more points in a game eight times this season.

"They proved to themselves that they can fight through on the road after playing a great first half and coming out a little flat 1/8in the second half 3/8," said Mullin of the win over Providence. "Not only individually, they proved it to each other.

"Trust and confidence is built through that. It's built through adversity, it's built through failing and handling it. Part of it is daily practice, feeling good about yourself and knowing the coaches have your best interest at hand. The real part comes when you do it yourself."

Mullin's crew will be facing one of the best scorers in the county in Trevon Bluiett, who scored a career-high 40 points on 12 of 15 from the field, including 9 of 11 from beyond the arc, in an 86-78 loss to No. 19 Cincinnati.

The loss was the Musketeers fourth in the last five games.

Bluiett tied the school record for 3s in a game. His 40 points were the second-most ever against Cincinnati, one shy of Dell Curry's total for Virginia Tech in 1985-86.

"Once you get a couple to fall in, you've got all that adrenalin going," Bluiett said. "Once you get a few to fall in, it's like the rim is as big as the ocean. I felt every shot I was taking would go in.

Bluiett, a 6-foot-5 junior guard, leads Xavier averaging 18.4 points per game and has hit a team-high 51 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Edmond Sumner's 4.9 assist average is third-best in the conference to go with his 14.9 points per game.

In their meeting on Jan. 7 at Cintas Center, Xavier claimed a 97-82 victory despite a combined 53 point effort from LoVett (32) and Ponds (21). Xavier rallied behind Sumner, who recorded 20 points, seven assists and three steals.

"Sunday is another conference game," Mullin said, downplaying the importance of getting to .500. "We can't really look at it as any more or any less. It's just as important as the games we're going to play after it. We're going to prepare for this game like it's another game. We have to mentally prepare ourselves to be physical and try to run."

Sunday's Tip Sheet
January 28, 2017

This Sunday’s college basketball betting action gets underway with a big ACC/Big East clash between the No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers and the No. 1 Villanova Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. (ET). At the same time in the ACC, the North Carolina State Wolfpack will go on the road to face the No. 13 Louisville Cardinals.

No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers at No. 1 Villanova Wildcats (FOX, 1:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Villanova -4 ½

Betting Matchup

Virginia is one game off the pace for the lead in the ACC at 6-2 straight-up in conference play following this past Tuesday’s 71-54 victory against No. 14 Notre Dame as a 1 ½-point road underdog. The 16-3 Cavaliers are now 4-1 against the spread in their last five games and the total has stayed UNDER in their last three outings.

They are a profitable 6-1 ATS this season on the road. Senior guard London Perrantes led all scorers in the win over the Irish with 22 points. He is the team’s leading scorer this season with an average of 12.3 points as part of Virginia’s 69.6 points per game. Defense is still the name of the game for the Cavaliers with a points-allowed average of 53.3 that is ranked first in the nation.

The nation’s top team saw its current five-game winning streak come to a stunning halt with Tuesday’s 74-72 loss to Marquette as a 5 ½-point favorite on the road. Villanova (19-2 SU) has failed to cover in its last two games to fall to 13-8 ATS overall. The total stayed UNDER the 151 ½-point closing line in that loss and it has stayed UNDER in seven of its last nine games.

The Wildcats blew a 17-point lead against the Golden Eagles while going a dismal 6-for-34 from three-point range. The starting five accounted for 66 of the team’s 72 points with sophomore guard Mikal Bridges posting a game-high 20 points in a losing effort. It was just the second time in 12 games that Villanova allowed more than 70 points.

Betting Trends

-- The Cavaliers are just 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games against the Big East, but they are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 nonconference games. The total has stayed UNDER in 19 of their last 26 games on the road.

-- The Wildcats have covered ATS in their last four games against the ACC and they are 8-1 ATS in their last nine games following a SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight games played on Sunday.

-- Virginia won last season’s meeting 86-75 as a 5 ½-point home favorite. The total went OVER the closing 130-point line.

N.C. State Wolfpack at No. 13 Louisville Cardinals (ACC Network, 1:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Louisville -15

Betting Matchup

It has been tough sledding for NC State in the ACC this season at 3-5 (SU and ATS), but it comes into this matchup with some serious momentum following this past Monday’s stunning 84-82 upset against Duke as a heavy 16 ½-point road underdog. The total in that game went OVER 160 and it has gone OVER in three of its last four games.

The Wolfpack got a huge effort from freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr., who posted 32 points while going 10-for-18 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point range. He has been the team’s leading scorer all season long with 19.5 PPG. NC State (14-7 SU, 9-10 ATS) is ranked 26th in the nation in scoring with 81.7 PPG, but it is giving up an average of 77.4 points at the other end of the court.

The Cardinals improved their record in the ACC to 5-3 (SU and ATS) with Tuesday’s 106-51 obliteration of Pittsburgh as 4 ½-point road favorites. This was their fourth cover in a row and the total has gone OVER in four of their last five games.

Louisville returns home with a profitable 9-2 record ATS at the KFC Yum! Center this season. It had five players score in double figures against Pitt led by sophomore guard Donovan Mitchell’s 29 points. He hit six of his eight shots from three-point range as part of a 9-for-13 shooting performance from the field.

The downside to that win was the loss of senior guard Tony Hicks, who will miss the next six to eight weeks with a broken hand.

Betting Trends

-- The Wolfpack are 1-5ATS in their last six road games and they have failed to cover in four of their last five Sunday games. The total has gone OVER in 15 of their last 22 ACC games.

-- The Cardinals are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four games against a team with a SU winning record, but they fall to 2-5 ATS in their last seven games played on a Sunday. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five games following a SU win.

-- Head-to-head in this ACC tilt, Louisville has a SU 2-1 edge in the last three meetings, but NC State is 2-1 ATS. The total has gone OVER in all three games.
