GAME RECAP

JUST PLAIN CRAZY: MITCHELL, STAMPS HOLD OFF FURIOUS BOMBERS COMEBACK FOR 10TH STRAIGHT WIN

CALGARY — It was close, but in the end the Bo Levi Mitchell and the Calgary Stampeders were just too much for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Mitchell completed 29 of his 43 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns, while Kamar Jordan reeled in nine passes for 126 yards and a touchdown, as the Stamps held off a furious comeback attempt by the Blue Bombers en-route to a wild 36-34 win on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Nichols was also solid, overcoming a rough first half en-route to a 287-yard, two-touchdown performance.

The win was Calgary’s 10th straight, and snapped a seven-game win streak by the Bombers.

The Stamps haven’t lost a game since Week 1, with a Week 3 tie to the REDBLACKS serving as their most recent blemish, while the Bombers had won seven straight, with their most recent loss prior to today coming to Calgary back in Week 5.

As per usual, Mitchell and the vaunted Stampeders offence wasted no time making their mark on today’s affair.

Thanks to a 47-yard return off the game’s opening kickoff by Roy Finch, Mitchell began his first possession from his own 46 yard line with an eye on the endzone.

From there, he proceeded to complete four of his next six passes before finding Kamar Jorden on a corner route for a five-yard touchdown pass.

Rene Paredes would tack on a 27-yard field goal on Calgary’s next drive to give the Stamps a 10-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

After a few quiet drives by Mitchell’s standards, the CFL’s most prolific offence went to work on extending their first half lead.

Starting on his 52 yard line, Mitchell embarked on a six play, 58-yard drive which culminated in a 14-yard touchdown completion to Lemar Durant.

But while the Stamps were alive and rolling, the same couldn’t be said for the Bombers, who to that point in the game managed to register just 50 total yards offensively.

Things only got worse for the visitors on the offensive side of the ball, as Nichols saw a pass towards the sideline intercepted by Jamar Wall, who used a convoy of blockers to return it to 40 yards into Winnipeg territory.

The pick proved to be extremely costly, as the Stamps – seemingly at will – worked their way to the endzone, with Messam plowing himself in from 15 yards out.

The score increased Calgary’s lead to 24-0.

But Winnipeg’s slumbering offence wouldn’t sleep for much longer. And it was tailback Timothy Flanders who proved played the part of the alarm clock.

Facing third and one with less than three minutes remaining in the half, Flanders found a hole and busted through the line for a 50-yard touchdown dash.

With Andrew Harris still on the shelf with a nagging lower-body injury, Flanders made the most of his start last week against the Argos, rushing for 102 yards and a touchdown, while adding 34 more yards on four receptions.

But the Stamps did whatever they could to squash out any hopes of a Bomber comeback, as they responded with a 17-yard field goal by Paredes to improve their lead to 20 before the break.

Mitchell was solid after 30 minutes of action, completing 16 of his 23 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Nichols, meanwhile, was good on only nine of his 20 attempts for just 88 yards and one interception.

Much like last week, however, Nichols appeared to save his best for the second half. Down 23 points with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter, Nichols guided the Bombers on a seven-play, 72-yard drive which ended with a 10-yard touchdown strike to Clarence Denmark.

The score brought the Bombers within 16 of Calgary’s lead, and they weren’t done there.

On their next possession, Nichols continued to pick apart the once-indestructible Stamps defence, en-route to a one–yard touchdown run that brought them within 10.

The drive saw Nichols complete all four of his passes, including a spectacular effort by receiver Ryan Smith for a gain of 40.

On the ensuing Calgary possession, Stamps receiver Simon Charbonneau-Campeau hauled in a pass from Mitchell, but immediately fumbled it after being tackled by Tony Burnett. The ball was eventually scooped up by Shayon Green and lateraled to Khalil Bass who ran untouched into the endzone for six.

The extra point brought the comeback effort within just a field goal.

The Stamps had a chance to slow down the bleeding, but Paredes saw his 42 yard field goal attempt ping off the field goal post.

However, Paredes had a measure of redemption on Calgary’s next possession, as he connected on a 37-yard field goal to increase their lead to six.

Not discouraged, Nichols led a furiously-efficient last-minute drive, while resulted in a touchdown pass to Julian Feoli-Gudino to tie the game at 33. Justin Medlock’s extra point gave them a one point lead with 20 seconds to go in the game.

But 20 seconds was all Mitchell needed to put the Stamps in a position to win. The veteran gunslinger completed two quick passes to Jordan and Durant for gains of 14 and 22 yards respectively, setting up a 52-yard attempt for Paredes with only four seconds left on the clock.

Nursing a calf injury, the icey-veined kicker drilled it right down the middle for the game winner, sending McMahon Stadium into a frenzy.

Next week, the Stamps travel to Hamilton to take on the Tiger-Cats, while the Bombers will return home to face off against the Eskimos.

GAME RECAP

GALE LEADS RIDERS TO LAST-MINUTE VICTORY OVER TICATS

REGINA – The Riders’ resurgence continued at Old Mosaic Stadium on Saturday night, as backup QB Mitchell Gale led Saskatchewan on a game-winning drive as time expired for their second consecutive victory.

Darian Durant and the Riders offence received the ball to start, and carried some of the winning momentum into Saturday’s tilt with Hamilton. Durant started the game with four consecutive completions and the home team wasted no time putting points on the board, as Tyler Crapigna booted home a field goal to put the Riders up 3-0 early.

The Tiger-Cats offence took over following the field goal, but wouldn’t keep the ball for long. Collaros’ first pass attempt of the game was underthrown to WR John Chiles, and former Ticat DB Ed Gainey came up with a big interception for the Riders.

Durant was able to string together a few more completions on the next drive, including a pair to WR Caleb Holley, but the Riders were forced to punt.

Despite a brilliant coffin corner punt from Josh Bartel, Collaros and the Tiger-Cats offence came out firing, with first down passes to Andy Fantuz and Spencer Watt to move to midfield. Another big completion to Fantuz brought the Ticats within striking distance, and Collaros found Brandon Banks, who scurried into the end zone for the Hamilton touchdown.

After throwing an interception on his first pass attempt of the game, Collaros rebounded by completing five of six pass attempts for 103 yards on a 105-yard touchdown drive to give the Tiger-Cats their first lead of the game.

Durant came out slinging on the next Roughriders drive, connecting with Holley for a 30 yard gain before finding Armanti Edwards down the middle for a spectacular 46-yard touchdown grab. Crapigna’s extra point was good, and the Riders took a 10-7 lead.

Collaros continued to work on the next drive, finding Fantuz and WR Junior Collins twice while completing four of six attempts. An end zone shot to Fantuz fell incomplete, and Maher kicked home the field goal, tying the game at 10.

The high-flying football continued as the Riders took over, as Durant connected with National WR Nic Demski for a 53 yard completion before finding Holley deep, fighting his way down to the one-yard line.

An apparent goal-line fumble by Riders QB Mitchell Gale, which was returned for a touchdown by Adrian Tracy, was overturned, and Durant punched it in on the following play to give the Riders a 17-10 lead.

Neither offence could muster much in the dying minutes, and the Riders headed into halftime with a 17-10 lead on home soil. Durant finished the half completing 75% of his attempts for 268 yards and a touchdown, with Holley recording seven catches for 102 yards.

The defences took over in the third quarter, forcing three punts to open the second half. Brett Maher had a chance to pull Hamilton to within four, but missed a 42-yard field goal wide right.

The Roughriders found themselves deep in Hamilton territory at the end of the third quarter, but backup QB Mitchell Gale was intercepted by DB Dominique Ellis to halt Saskatchewan’s momentum.

Gale took the place of Durant, who left the game due to injury and would not return.

Maher had another opportunity after a 37-yard Hamilton drive, but missed the 53-yard attempt wide left, settling for a single.

The Riders offence didn’t look the same after Durant’s departure, settling for a punt as they held a slim six point lead in the fourth quarter.

Collaros and the Tiger-Cats took over with six minutes remaining in the game and went to work, battling their way down the field. Fantuz remained a popular target for Collaros, eclipsing 100 yards on the drive.

Jeremiah Masoli made the most of his opportunity on second and two, following a perfect block by OL Ryan Bomben 21 yards to the end zone for a Ticats touchdown. Maher’s extra point was good and the Tiger-Cats took a narrow one-point lead nearing the end of the fourth.

Gale and the Riders offence took possession with time running out, and the backup pivot ran the three-minute drill with expertise, completing five pass attempts for 44 yards and rushing for 12 himself before Tyler Crapigna kicked home a short field goal to seal the victory.

The Roughriders have now won two straight games for the first time in 2016, and will head into a bye week before travelling to Toronto to take on the Argonauts.

Following their second consecutive loss, the Tiger-Cats will head home next week where they’ll host the CFL’s best Calgary Stampeders, who were the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season.

CFL Betting Recap - Week 14

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 3-1 SU in Week 14

-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 ATS in Week 14

-- Home teams posted a 4-0 SU record in Week 14

-- Home teams posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 14

-- The 'Under' went 3-1 in Week 14

Team Betting Notes

-- Calgary (11-1-1)
won an entertaining divisional game against Winnipeg (8-5), cooling off the Blue Bombers 36-34. It was Winnipeg's first loss since July 21, also against the Stampeders. In fact the Bombers are 8-2 SU and 6-2-2 ATS against everyone else, and 0-3 SU/ATS against Calgary this season. The good news for Winnipeg is they will not see the Stamps again unless they meet in the playoffs.

-- Ottawa (6-5-1) hammered visiting Toronto (5-8), improving to 2-1 SU/ATS against the Argonauts this season. The 'under' is now 5-2 over the past seven games, and 7-3-1 over their past 11 outings.

-- The Argonauts are struggling against the number lately. They opened 4-2 ATS in their first six games, but they're just 1-6 SU/ATS over their past seven outings.

-- Saskatchewan (3-10) has won back-to-back games for the first time this season, topping Hamilton (6-7) by a 20-18 score as 5 1/2-point underdogs at home. The Roughriders improved to 4-0-1 ATS over the past five games after opening the season 2-6 ATS in the first eight games.

-- The Tiger Cats have failed to cover in a season-worst three straight games, and they're just 2-6 ATS over the past eight outings.

-- Edmonton (6-7) got untracked with a 27-23 victory over the BC Lions (8-4), snapping a three-game winning streak to B.C. The Lions entered 7-1 ATS in their past eight games. These sides will face each other Oct. 22 in Vancouver.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 15

Action in Week 14 got underway last Friday with Ottawa getting past Toronto 29-12 as a 5 ½-point home favorite in a key matchup for playoff position in the East Division. Edmonton bounced back from a bad loss last week with a 27-23 victory against West Division rival British Columbia as a slight 1 ½-point favorite at home in the backend of Friday’s double-header.

In Saturday’s CFL action, the biggest game of the week ended with Calgary beating Winnipeg 36-34 as a 9 ½-point home favorite to extend its straight-up winning streak to 10 games while ending the Blue Bombers’ impressive run at seven games. Saskatchewan won for the second week in a row by taking down Hamilton 20-18 as 5 ½-point home underdogs to close out Week 14. The following is a look at all four matchups this weekend in the CFL.

Friday, Sept. 30

Edmonton Eskimos (6-7 SU, 4-8-1) vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-5 SU, 7-5-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Winnipeg -3
Total: 54

Game Overview

Edmonton’s much-needed win last week snapped a straight-up three-game skid and it was the first time it covered against the spread in its last five outings. Credit the play of running back Shakir Bell, who rushed for 108 yards and a score on 23 carries. Quarterback Mike Reilly added another 300 yards to his CFL-high 4,353 passing yards this season and his one touchdown throw gives him 21 on the year.

The Blue Bombers’ furious come-back attempt against Calgary last week with 20 points in the fourth quarter was almost enough to preserve a very impressive seven-game winning streak and they did serve notice that they are for real as a Grey Cup contender. Matt Nichols ended the game with 287 yards passing while completing 27 of his 44 passing attempts and Clarence Denmark was his leading receiver with nine catches for 84 yards and a score.

Betting Trends

These two West Division rivals have split the first two meetings this season with the road team winning each time both SU and ATS. Edmonton has a 6-2 edge ATS over the last eight meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in five of the last six games.

Saturday, Oct. 1

Calgary Stampeders (11-1-1 SU, 10-3 ATS) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-6 SU, 5-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -3
Total: 55

Game Overview

Behind 10 SU wins in a row while going a highly profitable 8-2 ATS, the Stampeders have now established themselves as the Gold Standard in the CFL. Bo Levi Mitchell is on a clear path to being the league’s Most Outstanding Player following yet another 300-plus passing yards performance. He threw two more touchdown strikes in last week’s crucial win to raise his league-high total to 24. The Stampeders also gained 100 yards on the ground in a balanced offensive effort.

Once again, the Tiger-Cats’ inconsistency on both sides of the ball cost them a game that they were favored to win. They have now failed to cover in their last three games closing as favorites, so maybe they will have better luck this week as underdogs at home. Zach Collaros completed 26-of-40 passing attempts for 310 yards and a score in last week’s stunning last-second loss to Saskatchewan, but with the game on the line Hamilton’s defense could not make the stops when it needed to the most.

Betting Trends

Calgary won the first meeting this season 30-24 in late August as a four-point home favorite. It is has now won the last 10 meetings SU while going an even 5-5 ATS. The total in that game stayed UNDER 55 and it has stayed UNDER in nine of the last 10 games between the two.

Ottawa RedBlacks (6-5-1 SU, 5-7 ATS) vs. British Columbia Lions (8-4 SU, 9-3 ATS)
Point-spread: BC -6
Total: 53 ½

Game Overview

Ottawa’s Week 14 win has it back on top in the East, but it has still been a rough ride for bettors with a 2-6 record ATS in its last eight games. The total stayed UNDER 53 ½ points against the Argonauts and it has stayed UNDER in five of the RedBlacks’ last seven contests. Trevor Harris turned in another solid performance with 274 yards passing while connecting on 71.4 percent of his 35 throws, but the bulk of the team’s 29 points came on five field goals and 109 kick return for a score on a missed Toronto field goal.

The Lions’ loss to Edmonton pretty much has them fighting for second place in the West right now. This setback snapped a three-game winning streak both SU and ATS that started with a six-point road victory against Ottawa. Last week, Jonathon Jennings threw for 278 yards against the Eskimos, but he only completed 57.1 percent of his 28 passing attempts with two completions going to the wrong team as interceptions.

Betting Trends

BC has won three of the last five meetings SU including that 29-23 victory on Aug. 25 as a 2 ½-point road underdog. The RedBlacks have the slight 3-2 edge ATS and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in all five games.

Sunday, Oct. 2

Toronto Argonauts (5-8 SU, 5-8 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (3-9 SU, 4-8 ATS)
Point-spread: PICK
Total: 49

Game Overview

Toronto’s loss to Ottawa last week was its sixth setback both SU and ATS in its last seven games and it now has to be concerned about even making the playoffs this season with Edmonton moving in position to be a crossover team from the West. A change at quarterback to newly acquired Drew Willy in place of an ineffective Dan LeFevour did not provide the necessary spark against the RedBlacks and an injured Ricky Ray (ribs) is still a few weeks away from returning to the lineup.

The Alouettes are coming off a bye, but with Saskatchewan winning its last two games, they are in position to be considered the worst team in the CFL right now. Montreal has averaged 20.8 points a game this season and it has not scored more than 18 points in three of the four games in its current four-game SU losing streak. It has only covered a spread twice in its last seven outings.

Betting Trends

Toronto won the first meeting this season 30-17 in late July as a 4 ½-point home favorite, but Montreal still has the slight 3-2 edge both SU and ATS in the last five meetings. The total went OVER 46 in that first game after staying UNDER in the previous six meetings.

ESKIMOS FIGHTING FOR PLAYOFF HOPES AGAINST BOMBERS IN WINNIPEG

WINNIPEG — November football seems so close, yet so far away.

The leaves are already changing on trees across the nation and the intensity of games across the CFL has picked up as teams inch towards playoff football.

Playoff football which, as it stands, both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Edmonton Eskimos will be a part of. For the Esks, however, that’s only by virtue of an East Division crossover at the moment.

At 8-5, the Bombers are a win or two away from firming up a playoff berth, while the 6-7 Eskimos need a win to jump back in the West Division race and even compete for a home playoff game.

If the defending Grey Cup Champions are looking to make a run, last week’s win over the second-place Lions was a pretty good start.

The Esks are now within touching distance of .500 following last week’s 27-23 win over the Leos at Commonwealth, but quarterback Mike Reilly knows the Bombers will be a whole other challenge in Winnipeg in Week 15.

“They’ve been playing really good football the last two months,” Reilly told Esks.com. “They’re opportunistic — if you make a mistake, they force a lot of turnovers. They give their offence a short field to work with.”

The Edmonton pivot highlighted the importance of momentum swings at Investors Group Field on Friday.

“They try to flip the momentum of the game and they do a nice job of it,” continued Reilly. “The way you counteract that is you’re smart with the football. You don’t give them those chances. If you’re able to eliminate it, that makes it much more difficult for them.”

League-leading receiver Adarius Bowman said last week’s win against BC instilled a renewed sense of confidence in Edmonton’s locker room.

“We can compete with any team in this league and (last week’s win over BC) was an amazing step,” said Bowman, who at 1,400 receiving yards is on pace to shatter his previous career high. “In terms of this week, Winnipeg is a great team — they’ve been on a great run.”

Bowman, named a Shaw Top Performer for the month of September this week, said it will be up to Edmonton’s offence to produce — something the Esks have struggled to consistently do this season.

“Their strength is their defence (and) having the weapons we have on offence, it’s going to be a great game,” predicted the Oklahoma State product. “If you look at their games, it was all takeaways. Their defence does a good job — if you make mistakes, they capitalize — (so) the key to the game is our offence: Stay on the field and don’t give them the ball.”

Limiting mistakes on the offensive side of the football was the Eskimos’ focus in practice this week.

While the Esks boast the league’s most productive offence, the turnover battle hasn’t been as kind. The Eskimos rank second-last with a turnover ratio of minus-six, while on offence they’ve given the football away 29 times.

“This is going to come down to a ball-security game for sure,” said Edmonton head coach Jason Maas. “Bottom-line is we want to protect the ball and we’ve thought about it all week. I’d like to see us create more turnovers than we give up.”

Shakir Bell, named the Esks’ starting running back earlier in the week, won’t play on Friday due to an injury reportedly suffered in Wednesday’s practice. That means the Esks will go back to John White on the ground.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers had their seven-game winning streak snapped last week by the Calgary Stampeders in Cowtown.

Despite the loss to the Stamps, Winnipeg is well in the running for a home playoff game down the stretch.

“We’re past Calgary and have been for a while — I love that about this team,” said breakout rookie defensive back Kevin Fogg. “That was a tough game to lose, but it was just one loss and we can’t make it out to be any more important than any other past game on our schedule.”

Where mental fortitude has been a question mark for Winnipeg in the past, Fogg — a top-ten player in both tackles (61, tied for ninth) and interceptions (three, tied for fifth) — believes the Bombers are ready for the mental grind ahead.

“We know who we are now. We’ve built up to become a very confident team that knows what we are capable of doing,” described Fogg. “To have that stronger mindset is crucial now. This season has been a great journey for us, a real learning curve.”

A learning curve indeed. The Bombers started off 1-4, then rattled off seven-straight W’s on the hot hand of quarterback Matt Nichols, who is slated to face his former team for the second time.

“You want to win each and every week and against your former team would make it that much sweeter,” said Nichols, who threw for 304 yards and a touchdown in Winnipeg’s Week 6 win against the Eskimos. “We need to take that next step as a team and learn how to handle a loss and come back with the same emotion we’ve been playing with this year and try and get back to winning football games again.”

The Bombers will be boosted by the return of leading tackler Ian Wild to the linebacker corps; the Pittsburgh native sits just outside the league’s top-10 tacklers despite having missed the past two games with injury.

Andrew Harris is listed second on the depth chart behind Timothy Flanders, leaving his status up in the air for Friday night’s game. If he can’t go, Flanders has proven capable as a backup filling in for Harris the past few weeks.

By the Numbers

11 – Interceptions combined between Winnipeg DBs Maurice Leggett and TJ Heath.

14 – Sacks combined between Edmonton DLs Odell Willis and Almondo Sewell.

375 – Points surrendered by Edmonton this season — the third-most in the CFL.

4,353 – League-high passing yards for Edmonton QB Mike Reilly.

The Skinny

The Bombers need to bounce back from last week’s ugly first half in Calgary.

They did, partially, in the second half at McMahon, but their comeback fell short and anything less than a win for the ‘new’ Bombers is a disappointment.

Back at home in front of their home fans, they’ll be looking to return to the win column in a big way against an Eskimo team that will be hungry.

While the Matt Nichols vs. Mike Reilly angle is always a tasty one, Friday’s game could be decided by strong defence.

Kickoff is slated for 8:30 p.m. ET and can be seen live on TSN or followed online via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

GAME RECAP

GROUND GAME POWERS ESKS TO BIG ROAD WIN OVER BOMBERS

WINNIPEG – With playoff hopes dangling on both sides of the ball on Friday night, it was Mike Reilly and the Edmonton Eskimos who came out victorious in Winnipeg, keeping their playoff hopes alive with a 40-26 victory against the Blue Bombers.

Eskimos RB John White made a huge impact in his first game since September 10, tallying 164 yards from scrimmage with two touchdowns and a two-point convert.

A win for Winnipeg would have all but locked up their first playoff berth since 2011, but Nichols and the Bombers will now have to wait at least one more week for that honour.

Despite only scoring three first-quarter points in their past three games, Nichols and the Bomber offence struck first in this one. After a first down completion to Rory Kohlert to move Winnipeg into their opponent’s half, Nichols found Weston Dressler streaking down the middle of the field for a 49-yard touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.

After gaining just 12 yards on their first two drives of the game, Reilly began to look more comfortable on drive number three. The Eskimos pivot found SB Adarius Bowman for three completions on the drive, but it was RB John White who found paydirt on a three-yard scamper to tie the game at 7-7.

The score was White’s first touchdown since July 23.

After a quick stop by the Eskimos’ defence, Reilly took over at midfield and immediately went back to White on back to back completions, marching deep into Winnipeg territory. After a deep ball to Bowman fell incomplete on second down, K Sean Whyte drilled home the 29-yard field goal to give the Eskimos their first lead of the game.

A pair of costly penalties to Eskimos’ LB Odell Willis on the ensuing drive gave the Bombers a couple of second chances, and it appeared they’d take full advantage.

Once again Nichols found Dressler streaking down the middle towards the end zone, but the ball popped loose on the two-yard line and CB Deon Lacey was there to recover, taking seven Bomber points off the board.

The Eskimos appeared to be in trouble on the following drive, as Reilly just barely managed to avoid the safety as he was brought down for a sack in his own end zone on second down.

Eskimos HC Jason Maas’ decision to punt from the end zone rather than concede the safety appeared to backfire, as CB Kevin Fogg streaked 40 yards for the return touchdown, but a blocking foul on the Bombers negated the score. With nothing doing on the Winnipeg possession, Justin Medlock kicked home his first field goal of the evening and the game was tied at 10.

Reilly really found his groove as time ticked away in the second quarter, wasting no time on an efficient touchdown drive to give the Eskimos the lead. White continued his dominant first half, sidestepping his way to a 30-yard catch-and-run. Two plays later, Reilly found Bowman, who stretched all the way out and just broke the plane for the Eskimos touchdown.

After another Blue Bombers drive stalled in their own half, the Eskimos got another shot to extend their lead. After a few short completions, Reilly looked deep for Nate Coehoorn, who was interfered with by DB Maurice Leggett. With the ball placed on the five yard line, Reilly tossed the ball to White who made no mistake, laying out and finding the pylon for his second score of the game.

The Eskimos headed into halftime with a 14-point lead thanks to a stellar performance from their offence. White totalled 90 yards in his first half back in action with two scores, while Reilly completed 21 of 24 attempts for 193 yards and a touchdown.

The Bombers seized some momentum early in the third quarter, forcing a Derel Walker fumble on Edmonton’s first drive at midfield. Though Nichols and the offence were unable to move the ball much on the following drive, Medlock hit the 23-yard field goal, cutting the Edmonton lead to 11.

After an action-packed second quarter, the third saw both defences ratchet up the intensity, with both quarterbacks finding little room to work with.

After the stout defensive efforts in the third, it was like a switch flipped in the fourth quarter. First, Sean Whyte finished an Eskimos drive with a field goal, extending the visitor’s lead to 16 points.

But Nichols rediscovered some of his success from the first half on the ensuing drive, completing a 33-yard pass to RB Timothy Flanders before finding SB Clarence Denmark in the corner of the end zone for the 36-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, and they trailed by 10 midway through the fourth quarter.

After Kenzel Doe mishandled the ensuing kickoff and conceded the single, the Bombers defence stood tall once again, forcing a two-and-out and returning the ball to the now-hot Winnipeg offence.

Though Nichols and Co. weren’t able to replicate the magic of their last drive, Medlock booted home his third field goal of the evening, bringing Winnipeg within six points.

Reilly and the Eskimos made quick work of the Bomber D on their ensuing drive, marching down the field and killing four minutes of game clock before Whyte booted him another field goal to re-establish a nine point Edmonton lead.

Medlock nailed a 55-yard field goal on Winnipeg’s next drive to cut the lead back down to six, but the Bombers hopes of a victory on this night would quickly fade.

Three plays into Edmonton’s next possession, Reilly found Derel Walker streaking down the left sideline, and no one could hope to catch him as he sprinted 61-yards for the dagger touchdown, sealing the victory for the Eskimos.

The Blue Bombers will stay in Manitoba next week, facing off against the BC Lions in another crucial West Division matchup.

Following the victory, the Eskimos will head East next week for a visit to La Belle Province and a matchup with the struggling Montreal Alouettes, where they’ll look to continue their momentum and keep their playoff hopes alive.

STAMPS HEAD TO STEELTOWN FOR WEEK-15 DATE WITH TICATS

HAMILTON — Can anybody stop the Calgary Stampeders?

It’s a question that’s been murmured in meeting rooms and sports bars across the country for nearly three months. The Stamps haven’t dropped points since a 26-26 tie back on July 8th in the nation’s capital, and now look destined to win the West Division with games to spare.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will have to solve the juggernaut that is Calgary this week if they want to hang with the Ottawa REDBLACKS in the race for first in the East Division. The Tabbies’ offence has sputtered in its last three outings, being held to 21 points or less and dropping an ugly 20-18 ballgame in Regina last week.

Both have plenty to play for: The Stamps will want to take a major step towards securing home field advantage, while the Ticats are just trying to stay relevant after an inconsistent stretch of play

Needless to say it’s been a trying week for the Calgary Stampeders and the team’s extended family after the tragic passing of Mylan Hicks.

With the loss of their 23 year-old linebacker on their minds, the Stamps will return to the field this weekend in Hamilton eyeing a 12th victory in 14 outings.

“I’m anxious to travel together as a group and play a football game. I know it might not be a top priority, but we understand that our team needs to be ready and live our life,” head coach Dave Dickenson told stampeders.com. “We’ll honour Mylan as a group, but we’ll also go out there and make sure we do everything we can to play our best game.”

Being on the road could help the Stamps, according to their head coach.

“We’re just all learning, we’re not really sure how to react,” said Dickenson. “For me, I like being around the guys — it is good sometimes to be on the road as well, less distractions.”

On the field, the Stamps will be boosted by the news that leading running back Jerome Messam will play after clearing concussion protocols during the week. Messam was banged up against Winnipeg in Calgary’s win last week, but is slated to start on Saturday against the Ticats.

“It’s been a tough week, just to battle back from the head injury and everything that happened on Sunday morning, it’s tough trying to stay mentally locked in,” said Messam, a Toronto native who leads the league in rush yards (810) and touchdowns (9). “Mylan (was) a good kid, he didn’t deserve what happened. I was there, and it’s tough to get your head around things — the organization’s been great at getting us people to talk to.”

Calgary’s offensive line will see one change as Missouri State-product Randy Richards will slot onto the right edge in place of the injured Dan Federkeil.

Stampeders kicker Rene Paredes was listed as likely and made it onto the team’s depth chart despite some early-week discomfort.

“I’m going to warm up on Saturday and determine there, but I should be good to go,” said the Concordia alumnus, who missed practice this week. “I just wanted to make sure nothing happened in practice.”

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are hurting.

With injuries to Rico Murray and Courtney Stephen, two of Hamilton’s top defensive backs won’t suit up on Saturday against one of the league’s top passing attacks in Calgary.

With those two out, the recently-acquired Johnny Adams will start in the Ticat secondary on just one day of practice.

“He’s got a lot of experience,” Tabbies head coach Kent Austin said of Adams, who was acquired from Winnipeg on Wednesday. “He’s been a playmaker (and) understands the league — if there’s position you can plug in at with experience on one day of practice, it would be (corner).”

Austin will call plays from the press box after receiving a sideline ban and $15,000 fine from the Canadian Football League for his action against an official last week.

“You lose the feel for the game, how the guys are, and the momentum,” said Austin of coaching with a bird’s-eye view. “You don’t have that up there, that general feel for the complexion of the game — the other side of it is I can lay things up in front me, see the field.”

On the topic of facing a stunned Calgary team that may still be reeling from the personal loss of Mylan Hicks, Austin had nothing but positives to say about the Stampeder organization.

“They’re a great football team, deserving of where they are, and they’re a classy organization,” said Austin. “They handled that as best as it could be handled, knowing the guys that are over there. It’s a terrible loss, but I know they’ve got a strong locker room — a lot of resiliency on that football team.”

With the Ticat offence struggling to put points on the board, Austin highlighted the importance of first-down production against Calgary’s league-leading defence.

“Every game has its own complexion,” said the Tabbies head coach. “We’re going to have to product n 1st-and-10 — we get into second-and-long on these guys, we’re not going to be in good shape.”

By the Numbers

7 – Touchdown receptions for Hamilton WR Terrence Toliver in just nine games.

10 – Number of sacks registered by Hamilton’s John Chick and Calgary’s Charleston Hughes respectively (both t-1st).

21 – Difference in giveaways between Calgary (14, 1st) and Hamilton (35, 9th) on offence this season.

441 – Points scored by Calgary, the most in the CFL.

The Skinny

It’s been an understandably difficult week for the Calgary Stampeders, and it’s fair to say that many eyes around the league will be on them on Saturday afternoon.

Everybody will be curious to see how the Stamps start in Hamilton.

The Tabbies are hurting on the defensive side of the football, which has been their bread and butter in recent weeks. Kent Austin’s upstairs.

Saturday’s matchup is wide-open.

Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. ET and can be seen live on TSN or followed online via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

LIONS, REDBLACKS GEAR UP FOR SATURDAY NIGHT SHOWDOWN IN BC

VANCOUVER — Following Winnipeg’s loss on Friday night, the BC Lions could separate themselves from the rest — for a week, at least — in the West Division’s playoff battle with a win on Saturday against the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

Of course, they’ll have to go through a REDBLACKS team that’s coming off a strong defensive performance at home against the Toronto Argos and streaking into first-place contention.

While the Leos are the better team on paper, Wally Buono’s team is coming off a demoralizing loss in Edmonton.

Head coach Rick Campbell’s team allowed just 12 points and put in a strong special teams performance en route to an important divisional win against provincial rival Toronto.

“We’re a confident bunch, shooting down the stretch of the season,” Ottawa pivot Trevor Harris told OttawaREDBLACKS.com. “This is where teams rise or fall. Obviously BC is a great offence, great defence, and solid team — I just have to go out and just trust (my O-line) up front.”

The offensive line is a major question mark for the REDBLACKS entering their matchup in Vancouver, with SirVincent Rogers placed on the six-game this week.

“It’s always difficult — SirVincent is a leader on our team, but we have enough depth and veteran leadership to withstand it,” said Coach Campbell. “The offensive line is a really good example of a unit that has to work together to have some continuity — it’ll take some getting used to, but we think we’ll be able to adapt.”

With some positional shuffling including Jason Lauzon-Seguin’s move to the left edge of the line, J’Michael Deane will slot back in for the REDBLACKS.

Ottawa’s defence is the best in the league against the run, and facing a BC team that is the best in the league at running the football will be a unique challenge for the capital club.

“The coaches have been doing a good job of getting (us) prepared,” said linebacker Taylor Reed. “We’ve got to stop the run first and foremost — with Jeremiah (Johnson) or Anthony Allen down there, they can run the ball. They (also) got big receivers: We’ll have our hands full.”

The REDBLACKS will have to be in tip-top shape on special teams to secure a win against the Lions, who boast one of the league’s most explosive return men in Chris Rainey. Ottawa itself saw returner Jamill Smith rip off a ridiculous 109-yard touchdown return on a missed field goal last week against Toronto.

ALOUETTES USE AIR ATTACK, DEFENCE TO BEAT ARGOS IN EAST CLASH

MONTREAL – Rakeem Cato threw for four touchdowns and the Alouettes offence came alive as Montreal cruised to a 38-11 victory over the Toronto Argonauts on Sunday afternoon.

Kenny Stafford hauled in two touchdowns and Samuel Giguere caught and rushed for a pair of his own to secure the win in Jacques Chapdelaine’s Montreal head coaching debut. The Als scored 14 points off of turnovers in the victory.

In his first game as a starter for the Argos, Drew Willy threw for 226 yards and an interception on 24/35 passing.

Montreal’s offence put points on the board on its opening drive and never lost the lead to snap a four-game losing streak.

The Alouettes quickly went to work on their first possession. Cato found Stafford downfield for a 48-yard strike on the first play, Montreal’s longest pass completion of the season. Giguere then hauled in 15-yard touchdown on the next play to cap off the two play drive and give the Larks the early 7-0 lead.

A strong return by Diontae Spencer on a deep punt put the Argos at midfield, where Willy and the offence looked to put some points on the board. A big run by Brandon Whitaker was erased after Kyries Hebert forced a fumble, which was recovered by Raymond Taylor and the Als but they could not add to their lead.

Montreal was penalized for a roughing the passer on Willy which moved the Boatmen downfield. A series of short passes put the Argos into scoring territory but could only manage a Lirim Hajrullahu 41-yard field goal to open the second quarter.

Stefan Logan nearly took the ensuing kickoff all the way to the end zone but was brought down into Argos territory, a 70-yard return. The Argos defence stepped up and held the Als off the scoreboard as Shawn Lemon recorded his eleventh sack of the year.

Willy and the Argos moved the chains, converting four straight second downs to cross midfield. Jovon Johnson then put an end to the drive, intercepting Willy and giving the ball back to Montreal. Back to back first downs by BJ Cunningham put the Als in the red zone, where Cato eventually found Stafford in the back of the end zone for another touchdown to increase the lead to 14-3.

A big gain by Tori Gurley on the sideline helped the Argos offence as Toronto looked to cut into the deficit before the halftime whistle. Kenny Shaw added a first down before Hajrullahu booted another field goal as Montreal now led 14-6.

A bad snap on second down pushed the Als all the way back to their own goal line and forced a third-and-35 situation. Montreal opted to concede the safety but still led 14-8 heading into halftime.

The Alouettes quickly added more points to their lead to open the second half. A pair of first downs by Nik Lewis moved Montreal into field goal range, where Anthony Fera hit a 24-yard kick to increase the lead to 17-8.

Following a two-and-out by the Argos, Cato went back to work. Tyrell Sutton burst out for a 14-yard run and Duron Carter added a 31-yard gain. Cato then found Stafford in the end zone for his second touchdown catch of the game as Montreal now led 24-8.

Willy and Spencer responded on the next drive as a juke by the wideout was enough for a 48-yard gain and instantly put the Argos at midfield. Hajrullahu hit another field goal as Toronto shortened its deficit to 24-11.

After a pass interference call, a pair of runs for first downs by Cato and Sutton moved the Als to the goal line. Cato found Cunningham for another major, his fourth of the game, to increase the Montrel lead to 31-11 and close out the third quarter.

The teams traded possessions in the fourth quarter as the Als defence continued to shut down the Argos offence. Neither team could get much going as the Argos had a turnover on downs in their own territory midway through the frame.

Later in the quarter, pinned deep in their own zone, Willy fumbled the football after being sacked by John Bowman and it was recovered by Alan-Michael Cash. The Als offence punched in another touchdown, a short yardage run by Giguere, to boost the team’s lead to 38-11 with 3:25 remaining to secure the win.

Next week the Als host the Edmonton Eskimos while the Argos return to BMO Field to face the red-hot Calgary Stampeders.
